I was meeting a friend for lunch in Benicia, a couple of hours' drive from my house. Neither of us…read moreknew much about restaurants in the area, but we "Yelped" a bit, and Pearl Thai caught our eye. Very glad it did! We were greeted by a gentleman with a fun sense of humor - can't really explain it, but he made us smile. The place is small, but very welcoming. We were shown to a window booth, where we chatted a bit before we looked at the menu. The server came to take our order and we had barely even looked. She told us to take all the time we needed. Eventually, we made our decisions. My friend got one of the lunch combos - a chicken curry (she chose red curry, you can also choose green or yellow), and I don't remember what the other combo item was. But everything looked delightful on her plate! On our way into the restaurant, I spotted a sign with a lunch special on it - crispy chicken kao soi, a noodle dish, and it looked good, so that's what I requested. It was quite yummy! The best part was the deeply flavored sauce that the noodles were nestled into - I could put it in a cup and drink it, it was soooo good, lots of savory fish sauce and just enough spice to keep it interesting. Besides the noodles actually in the sauce, there were crispy fried noodles on top as well, adding a nice texture variety. The picture doesn't really do it justice. I was hungry and dove in before I remembered to take the photo, oops. The chicken was breaded and laid on top of the noodles in thin slices, very nice and crunchy. We had Thai hot tea with our lunch - not the sweet kind, but the nice clean-flavored hot tea. It went perfectly with our dishes. I don't know exactly when either of us will get back to Benicia again, but if and when we do, I hope we can stop by Pearl Thai again!

*** Vegetarian Review ***…read more None of their dishes have fish sauce so you don't get knocked over the head with the smell when you walk in. They remind me every time I order, but as a vegetarian, we've all had that fish smell delivered to us at a Thai restaurant at least once (probably twice, more likely three times) in our eating lifetimes. It is such a relief to not have to worry about that here. Would I Come Back? Yes, when I'm in town, I make it a point to come here. Did I mention they don't use fish sauce!? Parking is is incredibly easy so that's never an issue. It's a shared parking lot with many stores and other restaurants. I typically go on a Sunday for lunch, and even with a party of 5, I haven't had to wait for a table. Seating capacity is probably 45-50 guests so if you're planning a large party, definitely best to call ahead and make a reservation. The Food: Roti & Yellow Curry ($14, Grade A+): Fried roti with a yellow curry dipping sauce. It's a super savory dish, and honestly, I should have had you at "fried." If you're wondering what roti is, think of it as a buttery, flaky, pan-fried flatbread. It's large enough appetizer to share with 3 people, but you're pushing your luck with 4. Pad Thai with Fried Tofu ($16, Grade A): I've had this dish 5 times now. To be completely transparent, it's the exact reason why I can't give Pearl Thai a full 5-star rating, purely because of consistency. The first time I got it, it was perfect. The second and third times, it had no sauce and was dry. The fourth time, I asked them to make it saucy, and they obliged to an almost soupy level. For this fifth time, I just ordered it straight up and zipped my lip on any alterations. As they say, the fifth time was a charm! When it's made with the perfect amount of sauce, this dish is excellent. The noodles have that exact texture you look for in a pad thai, and the egg gets that great scorch from the wok for an added layer of flavor. Also, the tofu has been incredibly fresh every single time. It never tastes slightly spoiled, which happens a lot in smaller towns that don't heavily support plant-based diets where tofu just sits in a fridge eagerly awaiting someone to order it. Mixed Vegetables ($14, Grade A): Sautéed wood ear mushrooms and mixed vegetables in a garlic soy sauce. If you've ever had Pad Pak, you already know this flavor profile. I really enjoyed it, but next time I'll ask for no carrots and maybe half the garlic. Overall, it's a perfect dish that absolutely requires steamed rice to soak up all that great flavor. Sweet Sticky Rice with Mango ($8, Grade A): The classic dessert we see at all Thai restaurants, but they serve it with purple sticky rice, making it a visually yummy dish. It's plenty of food to share between two people. Bottom Line: The service here is great and very friendly. It's a small, local shop with "Best in Town" awards highlighted on the walls. The environment is clean, and the food is served hot and arrives at the table quick. One Last Word: Don't leave here without ordering the roti with yellow curry for an appetizer. Pure savory goodness!

I drop in Sailor Jack's every year or two. Today was once again a very nice visit…read more I ordered a Caesar salad with 4 anchovies on the side. The Cesar dressing was light & delicious. Added my self-chopped anchovies as I desired. The California veggie omelette was cooked exactly as I wanted it - soft - and drenched with very tasty hollandaise sauce as requested. Hash browns very nicely Brown. I think one of the veggies was not fresh, but not a big problem I asked for ice water which the service person brought in a wine glass, a nice touch. + slices of lemon, which I ask for. Quick, efficient and friendly service in a white tablecloth setting. There's an annual Street Fair across the street. So an easy live Jazz graced the outside brick patio I was seated in . They call it garden seating, but there's not enough plants to call it a garden. Also the the connecting door and building is in contrast quite dusty with flaked paint.. For the diner who faces it, like me today, it distracts from the overall authentic historic charm. Sailor Jack's was formally a house. I will be back more soon. Bring a few friends.

I ordered the tomato prawns with linguine and toasted French bread. My partner had the prawn cocktail with a side garden salad. We also ordered iced tea, which turned out to be Brisk literally Brisk, not fresh brewed tea. For a waterfront restaurant overlooking the Carquinez Bridge, with entrées running around $29, I expected a little more attention to quality. My linguine tasted like what I can only describe as an upscale cafeteria meal. The tomato sauce had a noticeable heat to it that I don't remember seeing described on the menu, and the overall flavor lacked depth. I ended up needing plenty of lemon, Parmesan cheese, and butter just to bring some life into the dish. The prawn cocktail was extremely spicy and also missed the mark. Between both meals, the food simply lacked luster. There was also an odd metallic aftertaste that made me wonder whether some of the food had been sitting or prepared in industrial metal pans. I can't say for certain what caused it, but it was noticeable enough to affect the experience. The bright spots were the strawberry lemonade and the warm bread, both of which I actually enjoyed. What disappointed me most was that the restaurant wasn't particularly busy on this Saturday afternoon, so I expected the kitchen to have a little more room to put care into the plates. Instead, the food felt like it lacked love, effort, and the kind of detail that makes you feel good about spending nearly $30 per entrée. Sailor Jack's has one of those settings that should make the meal memorable. Unfortunately, this time the view carried the experience more than the food did. Would I return? Maybe but probably just to try a burger, enjoy the scenery, and keep my expectations much lower. Overall: beautiful location, underwhelming food, and definitely a meal that lacked luster.

I ordered the BBQ Chicken plate and swapped the rice for an extra serving of macaroni salad. I usually go with the mini, but for only about $3 more, the regular plate at $13.50 was an excellent value, with more than enough food for one meal. The BBQ chicken was the star of the plate, juicy, flavorful, and finished with a beautifully caramelized glaze that delivered just the right balance of sweetness and char. The macaroni salad was fresh and creamy, though not quite as sweet as I've enjoyed at other L&L locations, which is simply my personal preference. Most guests would probably never notice the difference. I also appreciated the finely shredded cabbage, which added a crisp, fresh contrast to the richness of the meal, different from other locations where it is steamed leafs. I'm glad I dined in because my plate initially arrived without the teriyaki and katsu sauces. I enjoy alternating between the two with each bite, and one quick request was met with friendly smiles as both sauces were promptly brought to the table. The restaurant was clean, the service was warm and efficient, and there was a steady stream of customers throughout my visit, a good sign that this location has earned a loyal following. If you're looking for generous portions, excellent value, friendly service, and a satisfying taste of the islands, L&L Hawaiian Barbecue in Vallejo is definitely worth the stop.

The only withdraw to this establishment is that there aren't many veggie options however that's not why you go here you go there because you want that macaroni salad with some rice and a protein with some katsu sauce. If that's not what you want to eat that day then I think you better choose otherwise plus your food is gonna be cheap-and you're probably gonna eat on it for two days

I love that the family also locally supports the community feeding the homeless and has food items for free people can take. Love to support people who give back to their community. We ordered their baked beans, mac & cheese, potato salad, brisket and tritip. I'd definitely recommend the mac & cheese and the brisket! Both were very flavorful and the brisket has a nice smoke to it. The tritip was a little tough for my liking and I like more of a mustard to the potato salad so I think we'd skip that next time. I was definitely eyeing their burger so I think I'll try that as well next time! Love that they have specials and switch up some items so there's always something new to look forward to. Besides giving back to the community you really can't beat the customer service here! They're so friendly and nice constantly updating us on how much longer the food would be. The owners actually made an effort to get to know us not just simply giving us our food. We will definitely continue coming back here!
