Gothic Cabinet Craft is the first place my family purchased furniture when we moved to Manhattan. The armoire was left behind during the last move to my daughters current apartment. The six drawer bedroom chest went through a few changes in color but it is still in daily use since 1997. The furniture is basic wood that lasts with care. You can have them paint it or do it yourself. When we ordered it was to furnish my daughters first apartment after college. They delivered everything without a problem. My daughter had a nightstand too. That was another item she left on the curb when she moved. There wasn't anything wrong with it, her taste changed. Basically the six drawer bedroom chest is a necessity. She knows not to get rid of it. Since I paid to furnish her first apartment I'm sure I would find a place for it. Buyer beware! If you buy a mattress from them, don't let them install it and check for holes. I found holes in my mattress which I bought from them. And another bad review that I wrote on their website they actually had the nerve to say that I must have gotten the mattress from somewhere else. The mattress I bought for them was called The Manhattan, and I paid $200 for it, why would I make up a story that it has holes in it? To add insult to injury, the delivery guy gave me the mattress plastic to throw out. These guys are straight up sharks, all appetite and no brain. read more

We commissioned a desk for the bedroom. We wanted it to look like the TV display built-in in another room, made by someone else, now retired. Tony drew up terrific specs based on our requirements and his crew constructed a terrific piece of furniture for us built to exacting standards. I wish I could give 41/2 stars as this was almost a perfect experience. The cabinet is absolutely gorgeous. It is quite unique and completely custom made for the space and my needs. (see pics) Tony did an excellent job of designing for our space. It was measured very accurately and looks like it came with the room. The pull-outs are really cool and with several command hooks (which we planned with Gothic) I was able to really take advantage of the space. The cubbies on the right were a great addition and I seem to have a place for everything. It was beautifully painted... not too glossy ...just right. Very happy with the pewter hardware. The whole unit just looks beautiful and classy. The installation was remarkable. The workmen were not only efficient and responsive to my questions but I have never seen such a clean install. They had a vacuum with them and other cleaning supplies and covered the room (my bed etc) so that afterwards there was NO cleanup for me to do. I was really impressed!! So the 1/2 star for the following: Took almost 3 months to get it instead of 2 as promised. But we did order around the holidays! There were two missing knobs and two missing small shelves and they forgot the closet rods. But... the installers went out and bought really good heavy duty rods same day and installed them. And the other missing items were delivered and installed 10 days later. So all in all an excellent experience and we are already planning to buy another item this week. I drew up a basic sketch for a custom wall unit for our bedroom. The space is slightly irregular and I wanted to maximize it by using every inch of wall versus putting up a standard prebuilt unit and having empty, unused space. I had a custom desk made by Gothic years ago that was terrific so I went into the Upper West Side location and met with Aris. He was great and understood our needs. He has lots of experience in wonky NYC apartments. He came over the next week and measured the space and made great suggestions for how to make the unit more functional, and attractive (finishes, doors, eliminating hardware to make the look sleek (e.g. hidden door and drawer pulls)). While the unit was more than a prebuilt would have cost, it was worth it for the beautiful design (lots of drawers, adjustable and fixed shelves, clothing rods), much higher quality and use of every inch of the wall. Plus they put trim pieces in so there are no gaps - it fits in the space like a dream! The staff who installed it were professional and courteous and left my place spotless. The items arrived wrapped in cardboard so no need for elevator pads. A great experience in every way! read more

I needed a desk custom made that would have a sliding drawer underneath the desktop to house my 88-key musical keyboard. Pursuant to a friend's recommendation, I went to Gothic Cabinet Craft at West 101st Street & Broadway. There I met Tony Stakis who was incredibly knowledgeable, knew exactly what I was looking for and designed the desk. When the desk was delivered, it needed a cut-out to the piano keyboard drawer to afford me more legroom. Tony could not have been more accommodating and personally came to my apartment building, picked up the drawer, saw to it that the cut-out was done as needed and delivered the revised drawer to me. Recently, Gothic Cabinet installed two bookcase/cabinets in our Manhattan apartment. The cabinets were sorely needed to provide organization and storage. While the pandemic required a delay in installation, it was well worth the wait. As with any construction project, the customer has needs and wishes. In the case with our project, functionality and storage were at the top of the list. When we met Aris Voulamandis, Gothic representative at the upper Broadway store, the first impression was "this guy knows what he's doing." Aris interpretation of our ideas were executed into meticulous drawings for our approval before the project was assigned to the factory. Don't bother with a custom captain's bed. I needed something 36" longer, 4" less deep and 3" taller than their Captain's bed. Also since it was built in I didn't need it finished on 3 sides. However their cost was 5 times the price! These workers must get paid in the hundreds of dollars an hour for their labor. Keep looking. read more

The delivery people dropped it off I tipped them $10 each. As they're going to leave, I notice a huge gash and wood missing in the bookshelf. I immediately call Gothic and say "hi, I just got a bookshelf delivered and it's damaged." The voice goes, "yeah so what do you want to do?" I WANT A MOTHER JUMPING UNDAMAGED BOOKSHELF! I love my Z Desk! It was exactly what I was looking for. My job requires me to have a home office, and I was looking for a desk that is stylish, classic, had drawer space, and was able to accommodate a computer docking station, with 2 wide screen monitors. I am able to organize my files while working on the computer and taking conference calls in one place. The quality of the build and wood of this desk is beautiful. I was also able to choose any finishing stain I wanted from a quick visit to one of the Gothic showrooms. Also, I cannot say enough about the delivery; the installation and build of the team that delivered the desk were A+. I had the Absolute best Experience at this store. When I walked in I was greeted by Tony whom was so friendly and helpful. He spoke to me HONESTLY about different types of wood , finishes, furniture sizes and price. I purchased an entire bedroom set (king sized bed, mattress, dresser, 2 end tables). Well they were delivered today and I must say I am beyond pleased. The entire set is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. I've been staring at it for hours. I'm honestly overwhelmed with joy. It's very well made, sturdy, and stunning. The delivery guys were on time, very very professional. I watched them out the window from the time the truck arrived and they were careful with every peice. I have hardwood floors and they were careful not to leave one scratch. The furniture was very well packaged and protected. The delivery guys put everything in place and even carried out every peice of packaging. If I could I would give more stars. I still sleep on a platform bed built by Gothic Cabinet in the early 1990s and use four small bookcases built a few years later. All have stayed in excellent condition. My wife and I recently commissioned another bookcase to stand with the first three. It looks perfect--even though the type of wood and the stains have changed somewhat (and the price has at least tripled since the late 90s). We also commissioned a much larger and somewhat complicated book case for a corner site in our living room. The result is beautiful,which is reflected in my 5-star rating. But I must note two things: even though we successfully bargained down the price, it really was expensive (more than $5,000); and it took longer than we had imagined. There was actually a problem with the complication I referred to, and part of the bookcase had to go back to the shop. I assumed that it would be a priority (since the mistake was entirely theirs) and that we'd have it back within a week; it took more than two weeks. But it looks great, and the installers were excellent, as was Aris, the gentleman who worked with us in the store, came to our apartment to take measurements, and made the drawings. read more

I have purchased furniture from gothic for many years and about two years ago purchased a king sized captains bed from them. The queen sized bed we purchased about 10 years ago is rock solid. It was clearly made well, excellent workmanship. The king on the other hand had the base attached with staples! How did I discover this? It is breaking on us. The base is sinking in and the staples are popping out! I am so disappointed. I bought from them because they were known for their workmanship in solid, good wood. Now they want $50 just for me to get an estimate on repairing the bed. I recommend you ask a LOT of questions about the materials, construction and workmanship before buying furniture from them. read more

I enjoy visiting this store. Furniture is well made, customer service is very good, and furniture arrives as expected. I bought a captain bed this year and it was in absolutely great condition. We use it as a day bed in our living room with lots of body pillows and it looks so pretty. Yesterday, I walked in with two things in mind, a bookshelf and chest. I always walk in with a printout of the items I want and ask to see samples in person. My recommendation is: measure your space, understand what you want, bring some samples from the site, and come in with an idea of the stain you're seeking. I don't like to waste time, especially if I know most of their inventory is on their website. If you get something, they're happy, but if you don't, they still seem patient, listen keenly, and offer several details to help with your decision. read more

I ordered a wooden wardrobe several months ago. It was comparatively cheap, but still a significant expense -- around $900 -- and made of the lowest quality wood. The doors were attached unevenly, and the hinges were crooked. They never opened or closed properly. Within a month, it was already falling apart. Now it's garbage. From the design phase through the measurement phase and then during the actual installation, my experience with them was exceptional. I have had things built by Gothic before and was more than pleased. This time I had a large wall unit built for my living room. Aris (store manager) was very accommodating; he came up to my apartment to measure and discuss the particulars. He took his time to explain various options; showed me photos; did a rendering; so I knew what to expect. The wall unit came out looking even better than expected. My husband and I are in the process of putting books and other items in it. Aris has offered to give us extra shelves for free, should there be a need. I've already gotten compliments on it, and expect to have it for the rest of my life. The price was beyond reasonable--actually lower than other places that do not provide as good a service. (I've had b ad experiences with custom built furniture in the past) It was painted the color of my choice and looks like formica, although much less expensive than formica. It's also easy to keep clean. So . . . . . if you'd like to have custom built furniture, I highly recommend Gothic. It's interesting to me that all the reviews for GOTHIC cabinet craft are five stars or one star. GOTHIC is one of the few furniture stores around that uses decent materials and from what I've seen, competent craftsmanship. A few years ago I did have one iffy experience with uneven staining on a platform bed and the use of plywood on the base where something stronger should have been, but guess what? They quickly rectified and replaced the bed. Since the Upper East Side location closed I took myself over to the Upper West Side showroom. It's a handsome place that you won't see the likes of (unless you consider some of the tackier furniture showrooms interesting). I went for a floor sample bookcase and was not disappointed. I found exactly what I wanted and was treated very well. Yelp is a very deceptive platform that can take a reputation down with a few unflattering reviews by a bunch of babies who should have a little more self-control. In my opinion Gothic is the kind of affordable, attractive furniture store New York City needs. And no assembly needed! read more

very mixed feelings. I walked into a store in my neighborhood and was excited about my purchase and when I received it it was in fact a bookcase made of solid wood with the finish that I requested on it. What surprised me is the fact that the wood is very rough and low quality. If you run a soft rag ( or your hand) across the surface it will snag the cloth because the wood was never sanded not even slightly. And one of my shelves was deeply warped and cracked that I couldnt use it. So basically this review is to say that you should expect much lower quality than what is in the showrooms. I kept my piece because it is in a dimly lit room. read more
