Walked into Gottlieb's by myself on a random weekday afternoon. The pastrami sandwhich was pretty good, I must say, but it didn't make up for my overall experience. I brought my own water bottle in the bag I was carrying, yet they charged me for a bottle of water. They also tried to charge me $2 more than the price the sandwhich was advertised as. I felt like they were trying to take advantage of a random customer. Additionally, I look Hispanic (certainly not Jewish) and felt like they treated me differently than other customers. Bad vibes. I'd been wanting to try this place for a while. I got the pastrami sandwich and the helpings of meat were pretty good, but the bread was uninspired. At $12, it's far from a good deal. fun, old style jewish deli with professional waiters (no tipping)...the service wasn't much different than that at Peter Luger's around the corner. Although the service was gruff, the staff was also very kind (I brought two kids, and also at the next table was an elderly woman in a wheelchair, and the waiter was very accomodating to everyone.) Ate at Gottlieb's last week and I'm still dreaming of their hot pastrami sandwich with grilled onions. This place has everything "heimish" and it's beyond delicious. The restaurant is filled with mostly hassidic men but my friend and I (modern Jewish) still felt welcome as our server (who appeared to be the only server for the whole place) was extremely friendly and gave us great recommendations. However, I'm not sure what the deal is with men and women sitting at same tables. There was a group of hassidic women who walked in and requested to sit at a table by the window away from most of the men and to have the window shades drawn down. Beyond that everything was great and I would go back immediately to try more. I would also recommend the overnight potato kugel and the chulent! read more

Gottlieb's is not only the oldest kosher restaurant in Williamsburg, it's also the best restaurant in all of Brooklyn. They have the most unique, authentic menu and everything on there is absolutely delicious. Every time I go there/order from there, I find myself in a huge dilemma over which one of there many amazing dishes I should choose. Their rib steak is always grilled to perfection as is the chicken. Their sandwiches, all of them, are consistently well balanced with the perfect ratio of meat to bread and, of course, the right amount of mustard. Their soups, let's just say I can writhe an entire review on that alone. When I'm feeling a bit sick or the weather is cold and nasty, I always order Gottlieb's vegetable soup which feels like a hug from the inside. Pay *careful* attention to what you order and what you're charged for. We ordered a sandwich, some fries and some soup and were sent over $60 worth of food! $15 was a delivery fee - they had mentioned a delivery fee when we spoke over the phone but it would have been much appreciated if they had said how much it was, since we didn't realize it was so high. After puzzling over why we were sent so much food, we called back to the restaurant and found out that they had just decided to throw in a whole second order of food - that we didn't order! When we explained this they asked what did we want them to do - erm, not charge us for the food we didn't order, please? Anyway we eventually worked it all out and they're meant to be refunding the unordered food onto our credit card so we'll see how it goes. read more

Where do I begin? I was excited to be getting a corned beef and pastrami sandwich at a Brooklyn kosher deli. What could be better? As it turns out, just about anywhere else. A typical corn beef and pastrami sandwich at a Jewish deli usually is so thick you can barely get your mouth around it. At Gottlieb's, I had to open up the roll to see that there was in fact any meat inside. I kid you not. And to make matters worse, the two pieces that were inside tasted like something you would get from a kosher for Passover, Mealmart shrink-wrapped corned beef package. It was horrible! I should have known better. When we walked in, the place was dirty and everyone that worked there looked like they'd rather be anywhere else. When I asked for my sandwich on rye bread, the waiter told me they didn't have any. A Jewish deli with no rye bread? Seriously? He then said he could get some. The next thing I know, the sandwich arrives on what looks to be about half of a small sub roll. To be fair, my wife had the chicken soup which she said was good. I'm guessing that many of the "great" reviews are coming from family and friends because Gottlieb's is a disaster. If you're hungry, find somewhere else to eat. read more

Visiting from Boston and in Brooklyn for business. Found this on Yelp. It was terrific. The staff was downright friendly. The "owner" (I think) took my order in section so that I could eat at a measured pace. There was no rush. The bread and pickles were tasty. Soup was very traditional and in good measure. The menu has a lot of choices and too many for one visit! The chicken cutlet and side dishes of potato knish and squash with tomato sauce were delicious. The "owner" even brought over a large slice of watermelon "on the house". The price was perfect and the gratuity was included making payment easy. Was in area and stopped in because i promised my 14 year old daughter a steak. I was not prepared for the sumptuous cut of meat laying in a rich sautéed layer of onion. It was heavenly. This is one of the only good glatt kosher delis in New York (not that glatt is necessarily required halakhically). However, I would not necessarily order deli here. I've only had hot dishes, including kishka, Irish stew, shlishkes, and other dishes. I find in my experience that glatt pastrami and whatnot tend to not be of the best quality. In response to those women who have had negative experiences: Satmar is a very insular group. They don't take too warmly to outsiders. It would be best to come to such a place with a male, as men in this community are only comfortable talking to other men, usually. In response to the poster who claimed that the sandwich was meat on bread: that is the definition of a classic kosher deli sandwich! A good deli sandwich is hot, fatty, steamy meat on rye, eaten with liberal amounts of sharp mustard and alternated with bites of a refreshing garlic sour pickle. read more
