I came here based on a Groupon trade in. Warning: The shrimp fried rice and shrimp lo mein come with baby shrimp. They did not look fully cooked (not pink enough for me) and were not cleaned. Deveined shrimp is important to me. I ordered these two dishes, and I was really disappointed. I ordered one to eat at the restaurant and one entree to go. I asked to cancel the order to go because I knew I wouldn't eat it. The server involved the manager, who grew upset easily. He acted like it was a huge inconvenience. Beware that you have to order special dishes to get decent shrimp. The manager offered to take both entrees and cash me out for my wonton soup, which was also meh. I advocated for a new meal, and I ordered the General GAO shrimp. It was delicious but the manager's angry temperament made the meal harder to enjoy. Just got delivery from here. The food was great. The chicken in my Pad Thai tasted clean and fresh as did the shrimp. The crab rangoon were great as well. The spicy duck we received was tasty but barely registered any heat on my tongue. Everything tasted really really great. Prices are slightly higher than other Chinese food places in Beverly, but the food is better, at least so far. We'll have to try it again, not too soon, but we will get stuff delivered again. Takeout service is seamless and employees are nice but the food is lackluster and pricey. It's always refreshing to have a new restaurant in town, and we were more than excited to try out Gourmet Garden, in the Enon St Plaza, North Beverly. We had never tried their other locations (or heard of them prior to this restaurant's arrival in Beverly), but it sounds like the restaurant group has a great reputation that precedes it. True to the other reviews, the prices were slightly higher than your run of the mill Chinese restaurant, however the quality of the food more than made up for it. The ingredients were incredibly fresh, and well prepared in everything we tried. My fiancé was really impressed by the octopus carpaccio, with an above average presentation. You can tell that these people really care about putting out a beautiful dish by the flower garnishes present on most all of them. I had the chicken lettuce wrap appetizer, which was really good, and filling. I also had the caterpillar roll which was another beautifully prepared dish. For an entree, my fiancé had the steamed chicken and vegetables in a bamboo basket. They brought out a sauce on the side as well. The dish could not have tasted fresher or healthier, which was exactly what he had hoped for. The interior was really well done, and was more than I had expected for a "strip mall" type of restaurant. The high ceilings, expansive bar, and plentiful seating all contributed to making this restaurant feel like a step up from your average Chinese restaurant. We will certainly be back! read more

Pros: We go often and the food is excellent. It's amongst the best I've had. I give it five stars for value. The staff for the most part is friendly, pleasant, and sweet. Con: Last night we celebrated my fiancé's birthday along with her family. The waiter was pushy as it gets. There were no crowds and plenty of seating available. A member of our party who worked in the industry said our waiter was "pre-bussing" the table, but he was overzealous. We barely put down our glass and fork and he was ushering them off from the table. This was going on all night long. It was rude! There's a subtle way of doing things and timing is everything. We felt rushed and it was "pissing" my fiancé' and I off. While the food was good, as always, this compromised our dining experience. Normally I would say something but I didn't want to risk taking the focus away from the celebration. A side note, the waiter wasn't friendly at all. He clearly didn't go with the rest of the place. I'm passing this along to management. They need to attenuate this behavior. I'm a business owner and treat everyone I service like family. You get twice the food with better taste at other places in Beverly. They kept the food up against the glass windows, while they waited for pick ups.. Not good. I really wanted to like this place. I've been looking at the menu for a few weeks and finally decided to make the plunge to order today. I've had so many horrendous experiences ordering takeout that I'll almost never order food without Foodler or Grubhub. -.5 star for the delivery guy calling me from the wrong apartment instead of reading the simple instructions I left when I ordered through Grub. -1 star for the complete absence of shrimp in my Chicken and SHRIMP Pad Thai -1.5 star for the most disgusting General Gau's chicken I've ever tasted. (after scooping out the white rice [which was pretty good] the chicken went in the trash) I understand that dishes at Chinese restaurants vary greatly.. but General Gaus/Tso chicken has been my favorite Chinese dish to order since I was probably 6 years old. But I've never experienced anything like what I received today. Soggy mushy chunks of chicken in the worst tasting sauce I've had. I can't even describe the taste as anything other than just bitter. We have ordered twice from Gourmet Garden. Never again. Last time we ordered delivery there was no little box of white rice included with the entree. I was told they do not include unless you ask for it. They also charge for the little box of rice. A 60.00 delivery with a good tip and no rice included. I suggested they ask the customer if they want rice when they a take a delivery order. I was told that most customers know already about their rice policy. We ordered again.I made sure to ask for rice this time. this time the delivery left out of the entrees. If I were to order again I would have to make sure to ask for rice and check the bag when it arrives to make sure my complete order is included. Our takeout tonight was overcooked and dried out, definitely not freshly prepared. The dumplings were actually tough and had no juices inside. We've dined in and done takeout numerous times. When they're on their game, it can be some of the best Chinese we've had. Unfortunately, they are most often off their game. They also lack consistency with how they prepare dishes. The first time I ordered chicken vegetable chow foon it was loaded with an assortment of vegetables and had a wonderful hint of ginger. Delicious. The two times since it has had few vegetables and only onions and scallion greens and no ginger. First of all I know it's unusual for a female to eat alone or for that matter any single patron but the hosts kept suggesting that"you should sit at bar - it is easier". Well.....this time I thought that until I unrolled what was friend into the wing a 6 inch piece of hair that came along with it pieces of the fried skin. The waiter was trying to question us but once he had the hair in his hands with chicken skin hanging from it, he couldn't say much. That's when the manager came over and told me not to order certain items anymore moving forward and made us feel as if we were trying to get away with something. I was out for nice time and considering I don't do take out that much, it was a special occasion that I wanted to enjoy. Gluten-free Chinese close by. We have visited twice since the location opened. Both times my family we have been seated without a wait. My son claims the hot and sour soup is the best he's ever had. He orders this soup just about every time he sees it. The lettuce wraps were good, possibly even better than PF Changs. The biggest reason for giving this place a try was their offering of Gluten Free options. They offered to modify items on the menu or you can order one of their two gf specialties. They also will make lo mien with gf noodles. My kids enjoy the carrot garnishes made to look like flowers. We also went back another time and had an equally as good experience. read more

A Groupon led us (me and a friend) here on a Friday afternoon around 2 pm. The restaurant was quiet with a few people at the bar and a few in the dining room. Restaurant is spacious and clean. We were greeted and seated immediately. Our greeter left menus with us and our waitress came over quickly to take our drink orders (water). We decided to split appetizers and entrees. For appetizers, we chose the vegetable spring rolls and steamed vegetable dumplings. For entrees, the lunch shrimp with a ginger scallion sauce and the healthy spicy chicken, both with a side of brown rice. Our appetizers arrived in a fair amount of time, 6 steamed dumplings served with a dark (soy?) sauce. We didn't care much for the sauce and the only vegetable that was noticeable to me were the edamame. The two fried spring rolls came with two sauces: a sweet/sour sauce and a mustard based sauce. We preferred the sweet over the mustard and the cabbage was the most noticeable vegetable to me in the spring rolls. Both were good, light. Our entrees came shortly ... there were approximately 10 medium shrimp in our shrimp dish and the ginger in the sauce was definitely noticeable. The chicken was disappointing as it was described as "spicy" but we did not detect any spice but did come with ample pea pods and carrot slices. The brown rice is a bit on the mushy side (great for me but not for my friend). We preferred the shrimp over the chicken. When the tab arrived, we were charged for the dinner portion of the shrimp and my friend asked the waitress whether we received the lunch or dinner portion and we thoughts she said lunch. She took our groupon and returned with the tab having only deducted the value of the groupon and did not address the price difference between the dinner and lunch charge for the shrimp. Rather than heckle over the difference, we just settled our tab and left. A good meal experience but would probably not go out of our way to return. read more

I went here on a date and it was great. The person I was with was impressed that I took her to an organic Chinese restaurant. I signed up for the birthday email club and look forward to going back soon. I think they have the best Crab Rangoon in the Boston area. We also enjoyed Three Delight and Hong Kong Shrimp. This is not stated on their take out menu so we have given a generous tip to driver multiple times. Solid Chinese food. Seems like they try to use better ingredients. I feel like I actually got fresh vegetables in different dishes. Which we all know was a pleasant surprise. Certainly among the best I've had in the North Shore. Used to live in Boston so still a bit different than Chinatown but again a welcome new addition. I will praise the owners for good customer service. My order for Beef with broccoli, got confused with beef teriyaki. The owner was nice enough to deliver the correct order. We called Gourmet Garden in Beverly yesterday to ask if they deliver to Manchester; they say yes. We compile an online order (super easy!), only to get an error at the end telling us they do not deliver to Manchester. We call in the order instead and my husband picks it up. Upon his return, we discover there is no rice to go with the two entrees we ordered. When I call to inquire, I am told that they only include rice with lunch orders, not dinner. WHAT? Is this a thing now? It is not mentioned in the online order menu. Finally, I was told that because we ordered chicken fried rice (for our children, mind you), we should just eat that with our entrees. We had been meaning to try this place for some time and finally got around to going on a recent Friday night. We arrived at 9pm, 2 hours before closing. We were seated in a booth right behind a rather loud party of 4 despite there being only a few other tables occupied. After about 15 minutes, our waitress finally came to take our order. We ordered a small appetizer platter, a chicken dish, and some lo mein. After about 20 minutes, our waitress brought the appetizer platter and the chicken dish at the same time. She then went back to the kitchen and returned with fried rice that we hadn't ordered. When we told her we hadn't ordered the rice and we expected that the appetizers would have come before the rest, she seemed surprised and annoyed. She disappeared with the rice and about 15 minutes later, when we were about done eating, she came back with the lo mein. Overall, the service was bad enough to have had no redeeming value at all. The second star is for the food, which was just ok - no better than any of the local Chinese take-out places, but not terrible. read more
