It feels like your standard fare Chinese food for the North Shore area. We forget how fortunate we are, I've tried Chinese outside Eastern MA and it just doesn't compare to any places in the North Shore. My friend Joe lived in New Orleans, and he would be ravenous for Chinese when he would come home because the quality is so much better here. I'm sure there are other areas in the country with great Chinese. Anyways, Honga is no disappointment! The pork lo mein had me hooked, it was part of the D11 (3) combo. I opted for crab rangoon, which can be somewhat a challenge to find the perfect balance. But Honga nailed it, great ratio of crab filling and fried wonton. The pork fried rice didn't have sprouts, which I actually prefer. I didn't find a whole lotta pork in it, but it was tasty, a little dry. Nothing a little duck sauce couldn't fix. I also got peking ravioli, oh they were juicy but a little bland. The sauce helped, but was mediocre. I will say service was super fast. That was a big bonus. The restaurant has plastic barrier up around the counter. It's a little haphazard but it works. I was able to sit and wait in the shop, however I do not believe they allowed dine-in as an option (I ordered in person and handed my food in a bag). They may have a table set up with utensils, I forgot to grab some. Fortunately I keep a couple pairs of chopsticks in my bookbag. I ate in my car while waiting for the laundry to dry. I placed an order for delivery on their website at 4:45 pm on New Year's Eve. I knew there would be a wait as NYE is the busiest day for Chinese restaurants. I received a confirmation text. by 6pm when the order hadn't arrived I called the restaurant to see if they got the order. the man who answered said they didn't get the order so I asked if I could still place one. he said yes but they were busy so it would be about 45 minutes. I said that was fine. I gave him my order which wasn't complicated ( but came to about $45) and my credit card number. more than an hour later I called again and he said they were busy but my order would be delivered soon. well it never did come and they never called me back. I tried to call back to cancel the order as I was going out at 8. and the line was busy. I just wanted to make sure I didn't get charged for an order I never got. I waited till 8:30- nearly 4 hours later before I gave up. if they were so busy they should've just told me they couldn't take any more orders. why take my credit card info? wont be ordering again. read more

How much you like this place depends on what you get. They have many dishes which are typical of Americanized Chinese food. I hate to say that the Crab Rangoons were a miserable failure. They were not crisp, not hot, and the filling lacked failure. Everything else was good, not bad, but not worth writing home about either. Pork fried rice and lobster sauce are nice, as is beef teriyaki. Beef with peapods had too many peapods and other vegetables. I was expecting there to be more beef and less other vegetables. I've had other things here, I can't remember any of them, which is indicative of nothing-special-ness. I go here because it is near where I live, and had enough to satisfy a craving for Chinese when I don't feel like cooking/eating at home. I told them on the way in, "If this place is awesome, I discovered it. If it sucks, it's not my fault." I knew it was a crap shoot. 4.5 stars on Yelp but only 9 reviews. Either this place is an undiscovered local gem or it's just another... (ahem) A bunch of friends and I were all heading out to see a dive presentation in Salem and we were looking for a quick, inexpensive place to grab a bite on the way there. I took it upon myself, in the midst of all else, to find the spot, Yelped for cheap and good and near our destination, and chose Honga. A group of 6 of us descended on the place at 7PM. We found a spartan interior with a few fast food style tables, a large order taking counter and a cooler for soft drinks in cans. Paper take out menus. No "real" menus, no real "dishes," no "real" waitress service. We placed our order (Vegetable Pad Thai, Chicken Pad Thai, Curried Beef, General Gau's Chicken, and the strangest Beef in Oyster Sauce, ever) at the counter, paid, and sat down at the tables. Quite quickly, the woman who took our order came to our tables with an array of Styrofoam and cardboard takeout containers, some Styrofoam plates and plastic forks and spoons. Wooden chopsticks were available. White Rice in a cardboard container came with the food. The Pad Thais were. What I mean is, yes, they existed. Had we been truly hungry, perhaps we would have eaten more. No one at our table was _that_ hungry. There was a lot of watery liquid at the bottom of the container. This dish was neither great nor awful, but not worth ordering again. The Curried Beef was good. Very tender morsels of beef served in a flavorful sauce with slices of onion and some peppers. I think we all wished there'd been more of that. Several people went back to that container for seconds. Then again, given the choices... The General Gau's Chicken also existed. Although served quite hot (temperature) and very crispy, there was much more coating than chicken, the flavor lacked any nuance or subtlety, and the sauce veered to the gelatinous side of the viscosity meter. Perhaps if served on china the dish would have presented itself better; on the oleophobic Styrofoam plate the orange liquid skittered about in little globules, like mercury on the floor after a thermometer is broken. Bon Apetite! The two lonely sprigs of broccoli were sadly insufficient. This was surprising considering the rather bountiful portions in general. If simply adding a few more crowns is out of the question, I'd gladly trade some of the chicken for it. The Beef in Oyster Sauce came out in a translucent 1 pint soup container. Ingredients: Beef, Oyster Sauce. What? No bean sprouts, no bamboo shoots, no onion, no pepper, no broccoli, no carrot, no nuthin'! In other Chinese Restaurants I've ordered "Ants Climbing Tree" and was served no arthropods nor wood, "Happy Family" with no jolly strangers joining the meal, and "Firecracker Beef" without a hint of TNT. I don't tend to take Chinese Menus literally. I thought this was a rule. This dish was literally Beef in Oyster Sauce and was about the most surprising thing I have seen served as an entree in a Chinese restaurant since I ordered Ducks Feet at Henry's on Beech Street in Chinatown in 1980 and got a plate of actual ducks' feet. But that's the exception that proves the Non-Literal Rule of Chinese Menus. The oyster sauce, although flavorful, was as thin as broth and the white rice did little to contain or absorb it. We did note, however, that if you are making a vegetable stir fry at home, dumping this into it - with some arrowroot or cornstarch to thicken the sauce - would make a decent Beef in Oyster Sauce. Had we liked the food better, I'm sure there would have been less leftover, but, as other reviewers have noted, the servings here are large, and the prices are relatively inexpensive. Our entire meal, with a couple cans of Coke and a couple bottles of water was less than $50. I'm sure that if I lived in the area, I'd order take out or delivery from this place again. I'll bet that there are other dishes on the menu as good as the Curried Beef, and that really is good enough for this kind f food. I would not meet up with friends here. I would not drive more than 10 minutes to get here. In all honesty, this place rates a 3 on the Yelp scale but, damn it, someone has to do something about grade inflation. I guaranty you that Honga could not rate a 4 or 5 on its best night. If anyone is keeping score, it wasn't my fault. read more

I tried Honga for the first time yesterday. I ordered the medium spice orange chicken and a small container of rice. It was delivered quickly and the food was very tasty. It was enough for two meals (so i'm enjoying it for dinner tonight). I was surprised to find actually pieces of orange skin in with the chicken (and few pieces of broccoli) but i thought that made it seem more authentic. Normally I like spicy food - the mixture of orange with a slightly spicy flavor was not my favorite - but i still enjoyed the food. The delivery man was very polite. Honga has recently been on a downward spiral for me. To the point where it has turned me off from Chinese food almost entirely. The sweet and sour chicken is just the regular chicken fingers covered in a terrifyingly fake looking red gel that is unnaturally sweet. The chicken fingers themselves seem to be of worse quality than they were before. Thin on the meat in the middle and sometimes overly burned. The pork fried rice is generally piled on heavy and very recently been not cooked properly (hard and chewy, sometimes even burnt) The boneless spareribs have also gone through the recession grinder. Just tried this the other night after reading the reviews on here. Just moved to Salem and have been looking for a good chinese delivery place. I thought it was all pretty good. The crab rangoon wasn't the best I've had, but I would definately order it again. The beef and snow peas was MMmmmm Mmmmm good. So was the chicken and broccoli. My parents were visiting and had the hot and sour soup and they thought it was good. I ordered take out from Honga on three or four occasions since I moved to Salem this past September. The food is very good. The vegetables are crisp and not over-cooked. The sauce and flavors are also very delicious. I love their fried rice and the chicken with mixed vegetables. I would actually go as far as to say that Honga has some of the best Chinese food that I have ever had. As another reviewer noted, don't be misled by the look of the restaurant- as it does look a little shabby. The food is excellent! Just moved to Salem and wanted to find some good East Coast Chinese (we moved from LA which for some reason can't pull off Northeast American Chinese). Unfortunately, this place is ok, not great, fast chinese food. We ordered Beef with Broccoli, General Chao's, and Scallion Pancakes (We didn't have a menu so we ordered staples). The Scallion Pancakes were doughy, not crispy, and did not come with nearly enough sauce. The Beef with Broccoli was ok, too salty and the broccoli was a bit mushy. The General was very good, definitely the highlight, but was a little overcooked and tough. Again, this place is fine, not great cheap chinese. I am hoping to find a better option soon. read more
