About a year ago, I purchased a VW Eurovan that needed some fixes and thank God, Go Westy was around! Most parts that I needed were available at their online store and the team was always super helpful and professional to help me find what I needed. Recently, I purchased the elimination fridge kit and the next day, it went on sale :/ This wasn't the fault of the store and they don't base their sales on my purchases :-) but, with a quick email, Dennis M. refunded me the sales amount and I received my package in a timely fashion :D All this to say that despite the critics that I have read below, Go Westy takes great care of its customers and is there when they need them. I truly appreciate their gesture and their recent actions showed me that despite being a smaller shop (unlike major ones like AutoZone, etc.) they will go the extra mile to make sure you're satisfied with your orders. read more

Shit shit shitty info regarding shipping times. I live 4 hours away. Yes 4 hrs. I placed an order Friday morning, was told by customer service that it should arrive Monday, no later then Tuesday. Sounds right. 4 days to go 4 hours. Just got an up date it's now gonna be a total of 6 shipping days to go 230 miles. Wtf. Great, we leave Wednesday morning for our road trip and the window handle will not be here until after 9pm Thursday so we have no way to roll down our window in our 85 vanagon in the heat of the summer. After extensive communications with GoWesty management we reached a solution that worked for us all! A lengthy phone call cleared up a lot of misunderstandings. I also maintained a good relationship with my auto repair company in Sacramento that uses their engines. The shop was so eager to help me to get back on the road to make a critical medical appointment that they failed to reach out to GoWesty before proceeding with a fairly minor repair. Apparently such unauthorized work can foul up your warranty. GoWesty has to be proactive to avoid owners who may attempt to try to pull a fast one! read more

I have been a long time customer for many years, '85 Vanagon and now 2003 Eurovan. I would advise anyone to do a thorough web search before ordering from them. I just bought a window shade/side window screen and when I got the drop ship email from the manufacturer discovered that the item had been marked up $40 (I could order it direct for $180 GoWesty charged me $220) and then I was charged 2x the actual shipping cost. I don't mind paying a fair mark-up but since they didn't even ever touch the item 20% plus 2x shipping is not OK. read more

Getting the up to date information is critical. on any Vanagon issue, you will find 10 different answers to every problem on the net. Just do yourself a favor, and heed their advice. Some models, like my 85, just have to have parts bypassed. Such as, the air conditioning. I can spend the money to fix it, but it won't work at all after 2 years. Mine is in the rear, and absolutely does not work anyway when repaired. GoWesty will advise, and you should listen. They have never steered me wrong after 40 yrs. mine is good to go for another 40. I have generally always repaired myself, but Now that GoWesty does not have a garage repair service, and for those who live in Southern Cal. Get to know Mesa West German Auto, Newport Beach or Costa Mesa. You won't be sorry with Norm's service and detail. I placed an order with gowesty on April 23. As of May 23, I still haven't received my order or communication I did not initiate. Around the same time I placed this order. I also placed several other orders for Motorcycle and van parts. All arrived within 10 days. Failure to process orders, easily done remotely. Is a failure in customer service. No phone number to contact an employee regarding the issue is a failure in customer service. I have never placed a Yelp review. But feel obliged to warn others about the complete disregard for the customer that was displayed by GoWesty. I will place my future orders with Vancafe, Vanagain. I've been a longtime customer and have been pleased from time to time.. but honestly, I'd use other vendors if I could, and will as much as possible from this point onward. I purchased one of their rebuilt 2.1 engines about 9 years ago for my 87 Westy, and have had continual issues with multiple mechanics over the years getting it to pass a CA smog test, even though the engine was promoted as being clean burning enough to do so. Also, something was really strange about the heads that came with the engine - as pointed out in person by my mechanic, who also showed me a properly fitted and "milled" version. The GoWesty heads had some strange grinding modifications done and clearly looked "wrong" (forgive my imprecise terminology.. I'm not a mechanic). And recently, I purchased a front bumper advertised as a direct fit, when in fact it isn't. Shipping charges were over $100, and since they won't pay or refund shipping charges in either direction, I'm basically stuck with this bumper if I don't want to eat over $200 in shipping. Further, what was to be a home repair now has to be taken to a body shop (at yet another additional expense) to modify the bumper brackets and/or drill new holes in the frame. And finally, you can *easily* find similar if not identical camping (or solar, electrical, etc) products for less.. and sometimes much less, with a little effort. In short, I purchase from them when I need to.. but will redouble my efforts to not do so again. read more

Gowesty no longer does repair work :( That makes me very sad because they were consistently the best you could find. But I understand the decision to switch to rebuilding vehicles for sale and to development. That said - I still order all my parts from them. I recently had a faulty battery isolator for my 'house' battery. They don't fail very often. It didn't take much work to figure out that the isolator did in fact fail. It turns out that back in the day Gowesty had installed the isolator. They replaced it for free, just like that. I have continued to have great experiences with the folks there. I do remember back when they did repairs that a good mechanic didn't like the direction of some of the development was taking. Something about the hot wire system I recall. I was surprised that he shared his negative feelings about it with me, a customer. But hey, everyone has good days and bad days. But otherwise I noticed that many of the employees are the same folks from almost 10 years ago when I first went in! I'm bummed that I have to find a new shop for the jobs I either can't do or don't want to do (replacing every single coolant hose on the engine for example) but I'm very glad I can still order great parts. PS - the prices of their vehicles are pretty clear. I looked at one and could see why it cost what it did. They even tell you exactly what they paid for the vehicle to start out with and then what every repair / upgrade cost to get it to the selling price. It's pretty concrete. I was very frustrated by this, as I had gotten used to reaching a person without much trouble when calling GoWesty. So far so good on all the work these guys have done on my Vanagon Westy. Chris and Nate are way friendly, and the mechanics are very knowledgeable. I live in Santa Cruz but drive 3 hours to Gowesty because their trust worthy. There not as pricey as Van/Folks/Volks Cafe but superior in quality. The other review on here says you get what you pay for which is true with Gowesty but not Van Cafe. Worth the trip to Morro Bay if you love your Westy. read more

GoWesty has made some great improvements recently and they have great people answering their phones and emails and they get back to you right away. 99% of the people you encounter are amazing to deal and pretty much the only consistently bad experience we have had was with Samantha (and our friends have too). My advice would be to call until you get someone who is helpful since there are so many great people that work at GoWesty! Recently we needed a new part that was proving to be difficult to find and we called around all the shops and stores near us and no one could find it. We sent an email off to GoWesty and we had a response right away and they called us and shipped the part that day! Talk about awesome service! Between our vans and our friends vans I feel like we are always shopping around and buying tons of GoWesty products and I love how innovative many of them are. They clearly know the van life and what you need/want to make it a comfortable trip! I respect the guys at the shop and love the work they do on their vans. It is such a great company and they have added a front desk person at the shop so instead of getting on a computer when you arrive and having no interaction now you can ask your questions and have someone help you. GoWesty supports a lot of great travelers who are out in the world doing great things and they do amazing work on their vans. Their customer service and appreciation has greatly improved over the last year. These guys stopped working on outsider vehicles. Now they only rehab their own inventory to sell at seemingly exorbitant prices. You can still buy parts from them, but the last part they sold me is an aftermarket part that needs a customization, which they didn't tell me. The guy spoke to me as if I was an idiot, and I had to call back for him to properly explain that the part I need is no longer available, and I will need to crimp the wires myself. I ordered the part using my model and year number, so you'd think that they would insert a little sheet of paper that explains that my part does not match the new part, and indeed, i would need to rewire to make it work. I can't be the first one ... The world needs the good old Go Westy. read more

The new policy at GW is that they no longer work on VW Westy vans. They will do warranty work on restored vans that they sold to you and may work on a van if they feel like it, but basically they re no longer in the repair business. read more

Two months ago we purchased a rebuilt 1986 Westfalia Wolfsburg Weekender from Lucas at GoWesty for $43,700. In the past eight weeks, the GoWesty van has had a malfunctioning coolant temperature gauge, imploding fuel tank issues, fuel pump failure, several types of engine running issues, slow crank, several occasions of not starting, exploding coolant bottle, and fuel gage malfunction. During the eight weeks of owning the van, we had to make four trips- at our own expense- to GoWesty for repairs. Also, the van broke down twice, leaving me and my 3-year old daughter stranded and requiring the van to be towed. We never expected to have these issues within two months of purchasing a GoWesty van, especially in light of their reliability promises, such as "Everything that is supposed to be there is there, Everything that is there works" and "We pride ourselves in selling vehicles that DON'T BREAK DOWN! It is not an easy, simple, or CHEAP task to make an older vehicle as reliable as a modern one. " (GoWesty's use of capital letters). The van does not perform as promised. The significant sum we paid GoWesty and what we received from GoWesty do not match. Lucas' explanation is it is due to "bad luck". We are disappointed and unhappy with how GoWesty has handled the situation. read more

I am giving Gowesty a very low rating, and here is why: I think they are a great outfit for purchasing bits and pieces, and are a nice crew of people, but I have to say their service and motors need some work. I will NEVER EVER recommend one of their motors. I've had a 2.3 for a little over 20 000 miles and have gone through 2 motors, and now a new set of pistons. During this period I have had to fight to get partial warranties, and have had difficulties dealing with the owner. Sorry Gowesty, but as you already know, I am a very unhappy customer and your pistons have failed 2x for me. If you want to stay stock, look into Tencents motors. If you want more power, look at a Subaru motor. If I was to do it all over, it would be Subaru, for sure. Good luck. PM me if you would like to hear me whine some more. Really great products, and overall fairly decent customer service. Understanding they get very busy, I recently placed an order online for valve lifters which their website said was in stock. Placed the order 6-22-2016. It's 6-24 today and since I haven't received any email stating my order was shipped, I reached out and asked for an update. I was told the lifters where in fact not in stock and they didn't know when to expect them. I asked them why they didn't notify me, and no reason was given. I asked them if they could expedite the rest of my order for their screw up, and again not willing to help much. So frustrating! I'll continue to order and enjoy GoWesty, but come on guys, a little customer service goes a long way. Update 6-27-2016 Mike at GoWesty contacted me, explained what happened and apologized for any miscommunication. They expedited my order and made everything right. Really horrible story, Lucas and Jad remind me of Donald Trump. I bought an engine for my '87 vanagon here, thinking they had a good reputation. I bought the 4 year warranty just in case. I've had a two year nightmare with these people. Nothing but trouble with the engine. First on initial installation. It wasn't working and they tried to blame my amazing mechanic. They tried to get out of the warranty by saying if the tabs are melted, your warranty is void. Luckily the tabs weren't melted, it was brand new and not working. So they brought it back down to Los Osos to work on it instead of letting my guy work on it. We had to rent a car and drive hundreds of miles to retrieve it. It was working but still acting a little weird. Lucas lectured us on how these cars are old and there will always be something off about them. He said you really shouldn't own one unless you're a millionaire or a mechanic, preferably both. Within a couple of weeks, my engine light would come on and the car always threatened to overheat. We found that if we "burped" it by unscrewing the coolant cap it would recover temporarily. We were getting suction and exhaust in the coolant somehow, but figured we could keep burping it and pulling over when the light came on. This was our only vehicle, so it was very nerve wracking. Then on a trip to Oregon, we got stuck in some up-hill traffic and the needle started moving up. I pulled over immediately, but I was too late. The coolant tank blew and melted the tabs. It only takes 225 degrees to melt the tabs. There was no damage to the engine, after it cooled down we added more water and brought it down to where we could have it towed. But that gave these snakes a loophole to say my warranty was void. We had it repaired by a great mechanic in San Rafael, CA only to find that they have an ongoing battle with GoWesty. The problem was something inside the engine they put together and they have had the same problem before according to our mechanic. We were told by our mechanic that they have had many GoWesty engines fail after about 10,000. miles and they always refuse to hold up their warranty because the tabs are always melted and they put that into the warranty to void them. Did I mention that they swore up and down that they've never had a problem with one of their engines? So they not only lied about this, but they also were on notice as to what was wrong with my engine. So this place might be good for floor mats and bumpers, but don't trust them with anything mechanical! They are crooks and liars. Anyone out there with a similar story, please contact me. read more

She stated they don't deal with the general public and she wouldn't transfer me to someone who might help me decide the proper parts to order. She instructed me to go to my mechanic, upon which I told her I was the mechanic. I'm a 44+ year local here and have had a similar experience in the past. I have been shopping at Go Westy for over 10 years. My first purchase was the 16 inch wheels that I got in 2004. I have installed many of Go Westys products and kits on my 1985 Westy. When there has been a problem (very rare!) the people at Go Westy took care of me right away and made it right! Their customer service has been great. Twice while on road trips I have had problems with my Van and they quickly worked me into their busy schedule, fixed my van and got me back on the road. As a plus, they happen to be located next to one of the best hidden wonder parks and camping spots on the California coast, Montana de Oro State Beach. Here is a few of the items I got from Go Westy that have greatly improved my Westy experience. Recaro seats. 5 stars for the seats and how they make full days driving so much more comfortable than the stock 25 year old seats were. Some of the stitching on the base and rear armrests seats was not as clean as I would have liked, but that was a Recaro issue, not Go Westy. I have had the seats for 5 years of daily driving and they still look almost new. Overall they have been a very good product. Wheels tires and springs. This really has made the way the camper drives much more enjoyable. This improvement really should be at the top of everyone's list. 2.2 liter engine upgrade kit. Huge difference compared to my old 1.9 engine. Lots of the hills that I had to downshift on I can now do without slowing. Major improvement in low end power and torque. I had Halsey Automotive Repair Inc. in Portland Oregon do the engine rebuild and have been super happy at how it has all worked out. It is also great to see a company that is coming out with products to replace the no longer made parts that never have worked right (the camper hook ups for one) as well as things like the new reduction starter. After replacing 3 starters in 10 years I just bought the reduction starter so with luck that will be the last one for a long time.
