I'm a 43 year old man that was interested in returning to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu after an extensive lay off. At my age, I wasn't sure if it was still an option, but I wanted to find out. Since I had last trained in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, many schools have started up in the DFW area. So I searched for the schools that were available to me and started researching them. I found six schools in the area and spoke with their instructors and learned about their approaches. Some were too lax, some were very hard on their students, some seemed almost annoyed I was there asking questions even. Some focused entirely on winning competitions with little to no emphasis on self defense or those not interested in competing. After speaking to all of them, Professor Young's demeanor and approach really stood out and resonated with me above the rest. He mentioned that his school is a Gracie Barra school. He took time to personally give me a tour of his school and show me the Gracie Barra approach and curriculum. He provided me with the history of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from founder down through the lineage of each instructor ending with him. Learning he received his black belt from Carlos Machado was a plus. Compared to the other schools I visited, his school was run very well. It was also clean and very well maintained. Everyone I met was very polite and friendly. He took time to make sure I understood every facet of the school. No other school I visited did this. I went home and read up on Gracie Barra and was happy to find that it is one of the most complete and undiluted systems of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu available. With the resources available both in class and online from Gracie Barra, the training provided is more comprehensive than anything else I've experienced in the past, focusing on self defense and sport jiu jitsu equally. With over 400 schools across the world, Gracie Barra utilizes a very time tested, and at the same time, advanced approach to teach Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to everyone. In fact, that is their motto. Jiu Jitsu for Everyone. Based on Professor Young's enthusiastic approach and Gracie Barra's history of producing some of the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners in the world, I signed up for classes the next day. I have been training at the school for about a month now and my opinion of it grows every day. I've seen male and female students on the mats each day ranging from pre-teens to some well into their 50'sand each are treated with the same respect and level of instruction. Safety is a big part of the school as well. Professor Young makes sure that every student trains at the level in which they are both challenged and safe at the same time. This is rare at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools and it is something that I really appreciate about this school. I would have no reservations about recommending this school to anyone I know. I've always wanted to do martial arts but never found a place that was just right and a great place for me to train and learn. Then I received a phone call from Champion and went in and loved it! I signed up that night! Its comfortable to train. In this heat the facility is made sure it is at a comfortable temp. for students to train. Champion Academy not enough can be said about the instructor, staff, facilities, and students. The instructor Mr. Young does an out standing job teaching his students technique and letting them master it. He takes the time to make sure you know the move and the steps to do it the right way. It is easy to learn from Mr. Young because of his teaching style. The students are amazing. One thing I love is that how right nit everything is at Champion. The students are like a family. Everyone is close and have fun training and learning from each other. You can't walk into Champion without feeling at home or welcome. I have been here over a year and I have seen the progression the students have made during that time. The most remarkable thing to me is how well everyone gets along with one another and the bonds people have developed within that short period of time. I've seen some of the more timid kids break out of their shells and have begun to blossom into confident, fun-loving kids who truly enjoy being in the Academy. Chief Young has a heart of gold and truly cares about the progression of each student, not only inside the school but outside as well. I enrolled my 5 year old son a year ago in order to give him a life skill and additional discipline to achieve goals. He has really enjoyed the classes and has also participated in a tournament. Professor Young and staff really take the time to encourage children's classes and develop confidence within a learning environment. Finally! A jiu jitsu dojo that offers air conditioning in this crazy hot weather! Champion Jiu Jitsu has a great facility; very clean, professional, and a staff that knows what they are doing to make your visit feel very personal and comfortable. I visited several different schools and had some trepidation about training in this 100+ degree weather wearing a thick uniform. I started at Grace Barra Mansfield about a month ago, it has been a great experience since day one. Professor Young is extremely knowledgeable and a great teacher. The upper more senior practioners are very helpful and take their time with you to show you proper technique. The mats are constantly cleaned and the facility in general is very well kept. I went to Gracie Barra Mansfield to "check it out". I was very impressed with the school. I enjoyed the curriculum, and the students were great. No "meat heads". Gracie Barra Mansfield is a great school! You don't have to worry about getting choked out just because you're a beginner. The people training here are professionals from many backgrounds, and great to train with.
