Love this place. It's out of both nostalgia and the fact that the food is good. Always love the pasta sampler and the salad with the House Italian dressing is awesome. I placed a delivery order on Thursday 2/5/2026 I paid $50.17 and it took a hour and a half to get the order which was ice cold and the order was missing salads for both chicken strips meals and the bread for one of the meals not to mention BBQ sauce for only one of the meals. I called and the manager told me he was sorry and would credit my phone number for the $50.17. I tried to call and place a order on Friday 2/6/2026 and they blocked my phone number so I am unable to place a order. Pizza is awful. Crust tastes raw. A large is the size of a medium in other places. Too much cheese on the pizza or it's poor quality. They are using boxes from a pizza joint in Ann Arbor that burned down five years ago. I went there since I was a kid. Came to town for a visit and I was shocked in the change. I am 57 yrs old. Been frequenting Grandpa Tony's since I was a small child. Back in the day, their steak sandwiches were the best in the tri-city area. Pizza was phenomenal. Now, that establishment has garbage food. Red sauce for any entre has no flavor at all. Each time we have ordered, we hope for the best and end up with the worst. Today, ordered a pizza that we haven't had in 20 yrs. It was crust, sauce, and cheese and toppings were on the side, literally. I understand keeping overhead costs down but to remove a family recipe for red sauce that was implemented in 50% of their menu was the wrong move. I have never posted a review on restaurant. This restaurant truly puts the tony into grampa's tony's. with its magnificent salad, with its tasty fries crunchy and salty but at the same time so airy and moist while it brings a joyful smile to everyone's face. don't get me started on the fabulous philly cheese stake with the elegant mushrooms and the tasty juicy sweet onions. The spaghetti and the secert meat bring me back to my young years as a little boy in Kenya with its utterly delicious marinara sauce and it's tasteful meat. The environment of Grampa tony's is something you can not compare with any other restaurant it's low prices and tasteful entrees bring the customers satisfactions and the staff make me feel as if i am grampas child. Though the bathroom is a tad small and i didn't have room as i am rather in the large side. But fun. unfortunately there was no toilet paper so i had to use my salad. I have eaten here on other occasions and would of given it two more stars. I was very disappointed this last time. I ordered an Italian chicken dish that was supposed to of been sautéed in a white wine. It was a generous portion of 3 chicken breasts on a plate of water with mozzarella cheese slices. We've had take out twice in the past two months. We found plenty of options to please everyone in my picky family. Trip one: My MIL had a salad, my FIL loved his fish and chips, my spouse had baked ravioli and I had angel hair pasta with meatless sauce. Trip two: Appetizer of fried veggies (good, would be amazing in person), spouse had manicotti, I had the same pasta dish as before. We purchased a package of cookies and some day old garlic bread. Overall: Their tomato sauce is AMAZING! Their garlic toast was also really good. The pasta portions are large enough that I had enough to eat seconds for an additional two days! I have reduced my rating one star only because their salads/dressings were not good. Maybe skip the day old bread--buy a loaf of fresh instead. read more

So I've been back to Grampa Tony's 3 times since I last reviewed it in August and I'm upgrading my review. The last 3 times, the service has been consistently friendly and efficient. Back in August my service was horrible! The service has improved tremendously. I've ordered the new York strip (tender, flavorful and cooked to perfection). Both the hoagie and steak sandwiches are amazing and GINORMOUS! The pasta platter is a good choice and its huge. And any of their homemade pies, cookies and Italian bread are a must. I love this old skool Italian restaurant. It's been around a long time and if you haven't tried this landmark restaurant... You should give it a try. read more

I have frequented Grandpa Tony's for over 30 years being a BCC grad and going there after events and for special occasions. They are known for their steak sandwiches and desserts. Tonight I shared a steak sandwich supreme (grilled with sauce on the side) and baked spaghetti. The steak sandwich was very good but noticeably smaller then in the past. The baked spaghetti was not layered with light sauce and very little meat. I would not get it again. Service is good. Prices are on the higher side. Table and booth seating. Lot and street parking. What a wonderful meal at Grampa Tony's. I moved out of Michigan 13 years ago and whenever I come back into town, this is where I want to be. Our waitress was so nice. Our service was excellent. We started with the veggie appetizer. It was an assortment of fried deliciousness. (Fries, onion rings, zucchini, cauliflower, mozzarella sticks and so on) We got small garden salads with Italian dressing. I love their Italian dressing it's better than anyone else's. I got a grilled mozzarella sandwich with meatless sauce. So good. When we were getting ready to leave my mother asked our waitress if she could have a to-go cup for her tea. Our waitress brought her out a HUGE cup and even added more tea to top it off. Excellent dining experience. I wished I'd eaten every meal here while I was in town. Bravo, Grampa Tony's! The Supreme steak sandwiches are the best with mushrooms, green olives, onions and cheese...Both nights I've been, Fina has waited on us. First and last time at Grampa Tony's in Bay City. I think this restaurant may be related to the Other Tony's restaurants in the Saginaw area but Grampa Tony must have gone senile in his cooking. I ordered the Dawnel version of chicken which is poached in lemon butter and white wine and then covered with mozzarella. The chicken was so tough and bland I sent it back. The side of spaghetti it was supposed to come with never materialized either. Tony's cooks need to pound the chicken first and add a little seasoning. My husband ordered a French dip. The sandwich was on a large bun with 2 very thin pieces of meat between the very large buns. It was a $9 sandwich. It definitely needed more meat!!! The au jus was good. So dip your bread and enjoy! My daughter ordered a chocolate malt and their home made Mac & Cheese special. Milk shake was good but there was minimal malt flavor so I can't call it a malt. Mac & Cheese was so-so. If you've made Velveeta Mac and cheese out of a box, you've had way tastier. The only meal that was good was my mil's fried cod and baked potato (instead of fries). All the salads we had with the meals had warm lettuce. The Mick Ultras in a bottle were very good. If you use your cc their is a 3% processing fee. But don't Judge all Tony's on this one. The service depends on who you get to serve you but in general I saw many people waiting with empty plates. The meatballs sandwich was tastey enough but almost all bread. The place smelled. I have been a huge fan of Grampa Tony's food. I have been to the restaurant and I have ordered delivery often. Recently when I went to order a usual appetizer, I was told the owner changed how the (Hot Wings) we're made. Due to a complaint. (One complaint: that they were soggy. By another customer. So the owner decided to change the recipe due to that complaint..) After years of the same ways, all of a sudden a change?!?!! How rediculous! I would brag about the wings and say they were the only place who made them to my liking. After being told that I couldn't have them the way I wanted or usually have them, I asked if they would do it the old way, because I never had that problem. I was told they couldn't, that the owner refuses.. Why?! Why would anyone refuse a customer of thier order after being a loyal customer. I hate to say, but they will lose two customers, and I will be telling my family and friends. How rediculous that one complaint changed a recipe. You might as well change your entire menu and take them off. What a complete disappointment. Then when I received my wings. All I received was bare chicken wings, like stated (saying they would put hot sauce on the side) and a side of ranch. NO HOT SAUCE what so ever!!!!! I called and they had to send the delivery guy back with sauce. Regardless of who was the problem, that's rediculous. So now I am waiting for hot sauce, probably not enough.... While my wings get cold. I am not a person to complain, but this is just silly.. changed a recipe that has been there for sometime, to all of a sudden, is going to ruin a lot of sales for you when it comes to customers. Was on a business trip that had me staying in Bay City for the night and headed out looking for some food. There isn't a whole lot of choice in Bay City. A McDonalds, a Rally's..... and then this place that I'm sure has been an institution in this town for quite a long time. A completely local restaurant with that very neighborhood feel. Definitely what I was looking for. I had the Italian Platter or something like that which is a combination of all of their pasta dishes on one plate covered with sauce and mozzarella cheese. So it's a little bit of spaghetti, canneloni, manicotti, lasagna, ravioli, and who knows what else all baked with a top layer of sauce and cheese. WAY too much for one person to eat, but good way to try a little of everything. I finished up with the bread pudding a la mode.... and for $3.95 it was gargantuan. A huge brick of bread pudding covered with 4 or 5 scoops of vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. So on the plus side, the restaurant has great prices for the quantity of food you get. I didn't come close to finishing my dinner or the dessert. And the atmosphere is very neighborhoody. Coming from California it felt very weird that there was a smoking section right in the middle of the restaurant. But totally reminded me of what restaurants were like when I was growing up in the Midwest. I just didn't realize things haven't changed in some of these states. None of the food was great. Serviceable, but I won't remember this place for the taste of the food. read more

Sorry to say the quality of the food has really gone downhill. Used to love coming here for steak sandwich but now it's mostly bread with a very small piece of meat. This last time I ordered the spaghetti dinner with salad. They served me my salad with the plastic from the lettuce in the salad, when I asked for a new salad you could tell they just went back took the paper out and brought my old salad back to me. Everyone loves a Grampa Tony's steak sandwich. If you're on a tight budget the grilled mozzarella is delicious. The fries, onion rings, fried mushrooms...anything deep fried is amazing. I haven't had good experience with the pizza, however. Going after the bar is my favorite, but they close at 2 AM so you have to leave the bar a little early. It's wayyyy better than going to the Texan, though. Everything is fairly priced, but it's hit and miss with the staff. I guess it just depends on what kind of mood their in. read more
