I had assumed the interior was going to be a lot bigger but it's actually pretty small. But good things come in small packages anyways! I love this area of Dallas. I love the Granada. Great music, great venue. But I had a very disappointing experience recently. The opening act for James McMurtry was entirely mismatched. I don't know what genre you'd call it, but the noise drove me out. Then, the sound mix for McMurtry was The. Worst. Ever. To add insult to injury, the Granada management did not extend even the courtesy of a reply to an email I sent the next day suggesting things they might have done better. No "Sorry" no "Be our guest at an upcoming show" not even "Kiss my ass." For that customer service failure, I give them this one-star review. read more

I hate to take Granada down a star, but last night I was reminded why sometimes it can be a bad place to see your favorite. Though it's smaller, so it's much easier to get a good seat/place to stand, it is not the place to yell while the performer is singing a slow ballade of amazingness. That was annoying. I saw Imogen Heap last night and she was fantastic; however, I felt this venue did not capture her sound. Her mic was up but the rest of the beat I couldn't feel. I know The Granada's speakers can kick ass, so what's the deal? The one thing that made me want to either keep my earlier four-star rating was the fact that at this venue, if you wait around long enough, you're promised a chance to meet the band. I don't know if it's the vibe of the place or the people whom just seem to hold concerts there, but every time I've been there I've met whomever it was I was seeing. Okay, okay, I'll keep my score, but the speakers and audience random yelling was horrible. read more

I've been here for multiple shows and an occasional event. Staff is always friendly and efficient. Ticket prices are more than reasonable. There's also not really a bad seat in the house. "Seat" being figurative as its standing room only for most shows, but the entire general admission area slopes gradually upward so you're always a little taller than the person in front of you. This is my favorite musical venue in Dallas. I just love seeing concerts here. The place is cozy enough that there are not any bad seats. The place is well run and let's you in on time. Good bar, good food. Prices are reasonable for tickets, food, and drink. I've had so many excellent experiences here, front row for Velvet Revolver in 2004, front row for Hot Tuna in 2007 (?), front row balcony for New York Dolls in 2008. read more

We came here on a Friday for a show. We got lucky and was able to nab a street spot about a block away. If you are not so lucky, however, you can park behind the theatre for $8. There was a short line to get inside and plenty of people milling about outside. The door person checked ID and those over 21 got a bracelet. Those under 21 get a black X on their hand. There are numerous bars both in the lobby, and inside the venue. The atmosphere was rustic and the seating for this show was mostly GA, with some chairs to the side with little tables. we opted for one of those and it was a good choice. The GA section was packed, but it is tiered so you don't have to worry about standing behind that really tall guy! The acoustics were great (the artist we saw did 1 song unplugged) and the facilities clean. They put up tweets on the screen before the show and during intermission. All of the staff that we interacted with were courteous and professional. A great experience! read more

What a awesome place!!! I went here to see Starz and here are my favorite things about the Granada: Super fun patio area to conversate, eat pizza and drink beer before the show!!! Security and staff were really nice and attentive!!! The venue is standing only, but there are these high tables to set your drinks that a lot of people sat on. An amazing music venue. I had never been here and didn't know what to expect for the Saint Motel Concert but wow! We ate at the restaurant next door called sundown at granada, and were rewarded with early entrance to the venue. I was able to get a really close spot! Also, i love how if you're near the front like we were, there's places you can sit your bag or drink on. This is a great convenience as most standing venues you're crushed next to other people waiting for hours. It was a sold out show but there was so much room! The show was so great!! Also, the security was really nice and I felt safe the entire time, there are multiple exits. I recommend this venue it is one of the best in Dallas. read more

Went to 80s prom last night. The sound system is fantastic. We really enjoyed theband. The area is great as well, not a bad seat in the house. So why a 3 star review? 1) the female bartenders were extremely rude 2) no AC. The entire place is a sweatbox. Love this small intimate venue!!! Granada theatre is truly an iconic Dallas performance venue, and this week's guest, Willie Nelson, proved that for sure. It's amazing how a such a small local venue can grab some really awesome performers. Some concerts are standing room only, some have seats, but the majority are standing room only. Drinks are reasonably priced for a concert venue. Bar upstairs and downstairs to serve all guests no matter where you are in the theatre. Doors open on time and the bathrooms are clean. First time at The Granada Theater and I had a fairly good show. The theater itself is beautiful, intimate and I think it's really great for any shows. However, my concern is the occasional smell of weed through out the show. It not against of what you do in your own backyard but to think that this show is 16 and up and weed is still not legal in Tx that's when I have a problem with that. Since it's a 16 and up show, I noticed that there were no ID checks or any quick peek inside your bag or purse for any outside drink or I should say "contraband". I know I may sound a paranoid person but with all what's going on in the news I hope they consider any of this. It was a good show nonetheless. read more

The Granada is greatness. They often have semi big names, cult classics, and fantastic local bands. As a shorty, I love that I can see the stage most of the time. Dancing can be difficult unless you go directly in front of the stage, which I may or may not have participated in. Mostly though, I hang out on one of the levels. The prices are good as well. It's not often you can afford to see live music twice or three times a week, but you can at the Granada. I have learned a few things in my life, and one of things is not to skip dinner when you are going to have a few beers. Another thing I learned is to not wear a bra made of duck tape when you are going to see a live band like the White Ghost Shivers play at the Granada. I learned that a combination of the two can be disastrous. Yeah. The Granada is the setting of those kinds of nights. Legendary and scarring at the same time. read more

Oh Granada, I'm sorry I ignored you for so long. We used to have so much fun together. Then, like some gold digger, I ditched you for a shinier package (HOB) and then for a dingier package (Prophet Bar). But I've come back to you, and I won't stay away as long this time. Remember in high school when you let me come visit you no matter what the show? We enjoyed bands like Flickerstick, Chomsky, Bowling for Soup (a rite of passage for any true Dallas-ite) and countless other bands. Now you've evolved with me and bring me such treats as Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, Tokyo Police Club, The Black Keys and Gaslight Anthem. All at a reasonable price, too! Your setup inside guarantees a great view of the band whether I'm sitting at a table on the side or standing in the very back (for better bar access). You keep me full with whiskey and Red Stripe and when that's not enough sustenance, you're there with delicious pizza and monster-sized M&M cookies (among a laundry list of other options). You're clean and friendly and your $8 parking is a steal for the area. You have a great sound setup and engineering that makes the trip worth it every time. But most importantly, you're a great venue that hasn't fallen prey to those nazis over at TicketMaster. Stay strong. Stay great. I love you. read more

Mid-size venues have always been a problem in the Metroplex. Venues for bands who are too big for most bars or clubs, but can't fill the larger venues like Nokia Theater. Back in the 80's, the Bronco Bowl filled this need. The down side was that you had to walk through a bowling alley to get to your show. True story. Granada now reigns supreme in this category. But without the bowling. First off, this ship is run TIGHT. I saw The XX there recently, and was told that the doors opened at 8, the bands started at 9, and The XX would be on at 11. I got there shortly after 8, and things were moving along well. Got through will call quickly, even though I did not have my e-mail confirmation (you can order online, as most do, and simply check in on the day of the show without a need for tickets). The first band, Zola Jesus, started within 5 minutes of 9. Second band, Warpaint, within a few minutes of 10. And The XX was on almost exactly at 11. Nice. Most shows are general admission - the are no seats, and you can pretty much hang wherever there is space. A few shows they set up tables, and you will select your seat at purchase, but this is the exception rather than the rule. The place is not that large. I think the capacity is 1150. As a result, the setting feels quite intimate, and its tough to find a bad spot (unless a tall guy in a cowboy hat stands in front of you). The venue has some food choices - pizza by the slice, chips, et. al. They also have a full bar with decent prices (comparatively) - Crown & Coke for 7$, Guinness can for $6.00. Parking was available behind the venue for $8.00. Was nice to not have to worry if I was parked legally off Greenville. All round, great venue to see a band and have an enjoyable night! read more

Indeed a legendary music venue here in this great city. I speak a simple truth that most locals and Yelpers already well know. This review is for those that do not... The Granada is an indoor theater catering mostly to music and performance arts, however, it does have other misc. events like watching sporting events on a large screen and others. You will usually find yourself here for a specific event that you purchased tickets for. 1. Parking: depends on the night that you go. Budget at least an extra $10 - $15 for this. - On a Wed. or Thurs. night, arrive at the venue at least 45 min. - 1 hr. early so you can park in the Granada parking lot for 10 bucks. - If your event is on a Fri. or Sat., chances are you will not be able to park in the Granada-lot. Don't screw around people, Greenville is not the place for that. You're best bet is to JUST PARK VALET, it usually costs between $12 - $15 at the most and it just saves you so much time and frustration... unless you REALLY enjoy idling up and down the streets amidst the traffic and walking LONG ways from your car to your destination. 2. Drinks: moderately priced in respect to your typical Greenville-fare. A Heineken cost me $6 and a shot of Jim Beam was $4. Expect to spend about $30 on drinks unless you're planning to get sloppy. 3. Seating: this really comes down to your preference, the type of show you are attending and the time in which you purchase your tickets. The Granada can be fully seated or partially seated with a general admission area in front of the stage. Should you prefer a seat at a show, you may sit in the floor area in the wings located on the L and R of the theater, in the "U" located in the center, and of course in the Balcony section. If you are like me, then you will be rockin' on the GA floor in front of the stage! The sound is excellent and not 'loud.' Between the Granada and the Bands that play there, they really invest much time and effort into quality sound engineering. In short, the Granada provides both a unique and intimate music experience that raises the standard against your average fare (i.e. House of Blues.) My "best" Granada concert-experience would have to be the Peeping Tom show in 2007. In my opinion, it bears 'some' resemblance to La Zona Rosa in Austin, TX but on a much classier scale... and with a balcony. Enjoy. read more

I'm giving 3 stars because I love this venue for things like blues, pop, and low key music. However for things like the Broods I must say this was by far the worst show sounds wise I have ever seen. She was screaming the entire time, you couldn't hear a freaking thing she was saying or screaming, the bass and drums were sooooooooo loud she didn't have a chance at competing to be heard. There were quite a few people that left early because of this and we did as well. I will NEVER see another musician like this at the granada. It's a waste of money. Is it possible for a venue to be old-school awesome and progressively up-to-date with all the current trends in fashion, music, and technology? Ummm, well yes, and it all comes to roost at The Granada right here in Dallas, Texas. The Granada has long been a Dallas institution. From screening the Mavericks play-offs to unforgettable concerts, they always seem to do it right. Nestled amongst the hustle and bustle on the notorious Greenville Avenue, it draws in the crowds representing all demographics. The interior has a legit (not newly-forced) vintage-glam design with gold trimming along the fresco painted walls. Most recently the theater took a big step forward and started making and serving their own pizza. Ultimately fostering an even more of a communal feel - they've got it all: people, fun, laughter, food, music, fun...They have also installed two large screens on either side of the stage to allow guests tweets to pop up on the screen during the show. It creates such a fun dialogue and interactive element to the experience. Kudos, Granada. Kudos. read more

Sure, okay, I get it. The Granada is greatness on every level other than parking can be tricky or pricey (a minor inconvenience). Yeah, it's my favorite music venue in the entire DF-Dubya, BUT here's something some of you may or may not have caught onto yet... The Granada is establishing itself as a top-tier COUNTRY music venue and, dare I say it, dance hall (of sorts). Yeah, I said it. Just hear me out. Make no mistake, this venue is and will remain ECLECTIC above all things - defying classification, which I LOVE! Seriously, George Clinton & P-Funk and Galactic remain in a dead tie for the two most mind-blowing shows I've experienced at the Granada, but lately I've become a huge fan of the kinda country they showcase. And, big-ups to the Granada management for turning the lower floor into a respectable place to country dance! Nice to see y'all listen and respond to your patrons. Thank you. Dale Watson, Two Tons of Steel, Gary P. Nunn, Eleven Hundred Springs, Jesse Dayton, Bruce Robison & Kelly Willis, Billy Joe Shaver, Cory Morrow... and these are just in the last few months! I love two-steppin' and waltzin', and The Broken Spoke in Austin is the greatest honky-tonk in Texas, which makes it the greatest honky-tonk on Earth! Huh? What about Gruene Hall, you ask? Ummm, don't believe the hype. Yes, Billy Bob's might qualify, IF I didn't hafta sit at those goofy long tables to watch a show and endure the Six-Flags over Texas-like atmosphere. And once in awhile they pull a "classic" country act that shoulda stayed retired. Anyhow, I'm not insinuating The Granada is in the same class as a true Texas honky tonk. It's not. But I am saying this: think about all the other spots in Dallas, Ft. Worth and a little further out. Granada theater might be one of my favorite venues of all time. Here's why: 1. They have a staged sloping floor. You would think that the interior designers or architects of theaters would understand that this is important. If the whole floor where people stand is all on the same level, then it is hard for people to see. 2. They have aisles on each side of the floor. This is genius. Because of fire-code, they have to keep these aisle clear. This makes it MUCH easier to use the restroom or get a brew between acts. In addition, we showed up for the Cut Copy/Matt & Kim show about 10 minutes before the show started, and in a full house, we were STILL able to walk all the way to the front. When you're traveling and out of your comfort zone, it's nice to have Yelp. I was able to pull up the app and find a unique venue to watch the Super Bowl. A night to remember... The Granada Theater is the best concert venue in Dallas! There, I've said it! Done! Now let me tell you why... First off, the Granada is not some one size fits all venue that could be anywhere. It's an historic old movie theater that opened in 1946 and you can still see it much as it was then today. The vintage marquee with it's bright neon lights and traditional back lit signage. The murals and much of the original architectural accents are still in place. Where they needed updating they updated, like the sound and the two projector screens on both sides of the stage, but it did not lose its soul in doing so. Better yet, the intimate size is awesome! I can actually see my favorite singers/bands, like really see them! Not see a image of them on a far away Jumbo TV or from the 3rd level of some colossal concert hall at about the size of an ant. I can see the sweat beads growing on their brow most of the time. Better yet! When I've gone to see those shows in the huge venues I end up spending 5 to 6 times more money and for what?! I might as well just buy their concert DVD, at least then I could see them and the same price as at the Granada. The Granada has something for everyone too, rock, pop, blues, country, jazz, indie, EVERYTHING! Sign up for their e-mail list and you will get weekly updates with the list of artist as well as who they sound like. Heck, for about $20 you can hear a live show at a great venue! Lastly, the Granada's best kept secret is their food. Usually most places have crappy over priced food that go from the can/box to your plate. Not at the Granada, from the pizza to the brisket nachos it's delicious! Of course they have to be delicious considering they are next door to tons of great restaurants. The prices are pretty reasonable too. Don't forget that they have 4 bar areas, so you are never too far from a refreshing libation. I don't know why I haven't thought to review the Granada as of yet. Probably because I'm still with the sad majority in thinking that Yelp is mostly for restaurants, eating out, and food snobs. Yes, I'm jerk sometimes and I know it. My apologies. This wrong needs to be righted as the Granada holds a vaulted place in my hall of memories, literally providing the soundtrack to some of my greatest nights out in Dallas. The Granada is part of the community in a way no Hard Rock, no House of Blues can ever hope to achieve. They live, breath and contribute to Dallas and Texas, every single day. Their frequent "Best Of" title, no fluke. The smallish venue allows you to be front and center of the hottest, upcoming bands. Drinks are mostly PBR tallboys and wells. You have to stand, shoulder to shoulder, in a crowd. And yet nothing can prepare you to share in Sufjan Steven's personal holiday memories, of his grandma giving each of the children money to spend the day after Christmas in a K-Mart. Buying the most random and wacky gifts for one another. I've soaked in Sleigh Bells and Janelle Monae at other times. Women owning the stage and giving it all up and then some. This is where we go to listen, to be with each other, to celebrate, to scream, to dance. Granada is the people. All the different, crazy, eclectic, humble, good-natured souls that populate this city. read more

Without a doubt Dallas's best music venue. The Granada Theater was built in 1948, and it still has a lot of elements that connect it back to that era, like the huge marquee out front and the murals on the side walls within the theater. It's a good size: not too big, but not so small that only bands no one listens to can play there. And, the main floor is divided into several tiers, which makes it easier to get a good view of the stage even if you're a bit further back. They have flexible seating too; they use different layouts depending on the performance (sometimes all seated, sometimes all general admission, and sometimes a hybrid). The Greenville Ave location is great too; you can either park in the paid lot or venture out into the nearby streets for a parking spot (I used to live nearby, and I could always tell when they were having a big show). Not only is a great building, though. It's also a well-managed facility. One of my favorite things about the Granada is that they sell tickets on their website, which has way lower fees than ticketmaster. They've also got a great booking agent, because they get some of the best indie bands (not just indie groups, but they're the ones that usually attract me) to perform there. And, they have giveaways on facebook and presales for anyone on their mailing list, so be sure to fan them and sign up for their newsletter. I wish Dallas had more venues like this. read more

Fantastic venue to see a performance. There's tiered levels going up the back so you'll always be able to find a good spot to watch a show. There are no seats however so wear some comfy shoes. Whoever books bands for The Granada would make a great talent scout - I've never seen a bad show here, and they seem to attract all of my favorite unknown artists and their fans. Very cool ceiling, decor, and atmosphere. I love sitting upstairs - standing for 3 hours downstairs just isn't fun to me, even though it is closer. Highly recommended - and if you don't recognize any of the musicians/bands, pick a random night and discover a new one, I doubt you will be disappointed by anyone that plays here. read more

Without a doubt one of my favorite places to go and see a concert in Dallas. It has the laid back charm that a music venue should have--like a place you'd find in Austin or Denton. You could argue that the HoB is nicer because of the seating, but it's also a huge pain to park sometimes and you can't escape the Corporate Rock Sheen. The Majestic is also great. But for a classic experience where you stand up and enjoy a great sounding show and don't have to worry about not being able to see, the Granada is tops. And a big plus is that it seems to be the one place in town that has enough bar capacity so that you don't always have to stand in for 20 minutes to get a drink...like you do at whatever they're calling the big theater in Grand Prairie this week. read more

After finishing school in Austin, I didn't think Dallas could house a venue even close to 6th street's hole-in-the-walls without imploding into oblivion (I could only wish). I stand (or sit, as it were) utterly corrected. The Granada is a haven among the ordinary, a Mecca of fine music paired with a usual crowd of wonderfully interesting and unique people, something Dallas is hurtin' for. Since the fall of the Gypsy Tea Room (a moment of silence, please), the Granada is all I have left. Go there. Who cares who's playing, cause you'll love just looking at the muraled walls and grandiose ceiling. I second the notion that there is no bad seat in the house, no pimply teenage "ushers" trying to throw you out of a closer section, and in-your-face access to the stage within kicking distance of the band. Two cool things about the Granada: 1. It doesn't get super crowded. I love this because I hate when I feel like I could be trampled at any moment and I being jostled around irritates me. Because of this, I don't go to concerts often but at the Granada, I did not have a problem with this at all. 2. Parking wasn't a pain- a hard thing to say in Dallas- and the location is perfect for having dinner before going to a concert. 3. The decor is really AWESOME. The Granada is a beautiful venue. They've always got really great artists lined up, and you can preview upcoming bands' music on their website. It's smoke free (go out front for smoke breaks) and serves some pretty tasty food, too. I've seen a variety of bands there and they've all been unique experiences, but in my opinion bands that inspire mosh pits don't work so well in this venue (eg Rancid and The Misfits). Bands that inspire sitting, standing, swaying, singing along, dancing in place, etc. do work really well here and it's one of my favorite places to go for those shows. And if you want to avoid the crowds, you can always get reserved seats on the upper level and watch the fun below. read more

I ventured to the Granada for the first time a couple of months ago to see The Black Keys. The Granada didn't disappoint. It made watching a rock show a pleasure from beginning to end. Other than having to pay $10, parking went pretty smoothly. We were a little early for the show so he had a drink or two across the street. By the time we made it back a line had formed and I worried we be waiting for some time. But they quickly dished out wrist bands and the line was no more. The idea of being able to pick your spot is great except for the obvious flaw of everyone wanting to be close. We grabbed some beers (decently priced for a music venue) and found a good spot. The show was excellent and if you haven't heard the Black Keys, they are amazing. Once you hear one of their songs, you'd eat a puppy just to hear the rest. The girl that opened up for them seemed a little emo though. I wish I could have hugged her. I thought the accoustics were good and the general vibe of the place was just right. Combined with short lines to get drinks, it's a hard venue to beat. I'll be rockin' out here again soon. read more

That's the most important part of a show, and often is lacking at other venues. You can count on Granada to have great sound and lighting. 2) Security/Serenity - Seriously, these guys are the nicest ever. Granada is such a welcoming place to be. Nice dudes all around. 3) Bands booked here - So many bands I LOVE have played here (Yo La Tengo, Stephen Malkmus, etc.) Yay! 4) Atmosphere/Size - I really like the size of the venue. It's not too small, but it's not too big either. I have options. It's always fun to hang outside during the setup times. Good people watching. 5) The Price is Right - they are totally decent about ticket prices. You can buy tickets through the box office or on the website, no Ticketmaster here. A lot of their shows are even $15 and under, which I am all about. Which means you can take those savings to the bar and make a good night out of it. All in all, this has been one of my favorite places to hang in Dallas for several years, and they've got some really great shows coming up that I can't wait for. read more

Went to see a show here recently and was reminded of how much I like this venue. The staff is always helpful,bartenders give a good pour, and it is small enough that all the shows have a more intimate feel. The food is good too-but I didn't get much as I had eaten at one of the many restaurants that surround the theater. If you go early enough and walk to a dinner destination you can park before the valet starts and save the 8 bucks. I also like that at every show I have been to at the Granada the bands come out and meet and greet for awhile. That was a nice touch when we took the kids to see Five For Fighting and they all got pictures with him. All in all this is just a really fun place to see a show and grab a beer. It still has great character and I hope to continue to see shows here for years to come. read more
