Between the five of us, we probably ordered about half the menu and every single plate they brought out was delicious. On more than one occasion in the head, chef came out to the table to drop a plate or introduce a dish for us. Which is so incredibly rare in this area. The cocktail menu had something for everyone and all of the ones I sampled were excellent. Parking was easy the atmosphere was great. would absolutely recommend and be back. read more

We stopped in to see this place after the First Friday Sip & Stroll in downtown Portsmouth. We heard this was a cool little hidden gem, in a building that's been around for a couple hundred years and is partially underground and very "speakeasy like". Super glad we stopped in, the vibe is incredibly comfortable and cool and envelops your soul. Ambience: super cool, comfortable, a little dark, exposed brick walls with plaster patches, hardwood floors, heavy wood and leather furniture, incredible bar that is more like two bars in an L-shape with an unbelievable selection of anything you could ever want. This place is very solid feeling, you just feel safe and tucked in. Service: was fantastic, we met the executive chef named Ty who greeted us before we even sat down, just saw us sitting in the foyer bar and came over to say hello, very cool. We were greeted and seated by an absolute sweetheart upfront named Jackson and our server couldn't have been nicer, her name was Casey. Food: the food is all served tapas style, smaller plates, but well curated with interesting and innovative ingredients with beautiful presentation. Unfortunately, they were out-of four things that my wife wanted, she didn't want all of them simultaneously, she wanted one and they were out, and that happened three more times. Apparently, they often order in smaller batches and buy locally so sometimes they don't have as much as someplace buying in bulk, that's as much a positive as a negative, not a bad thing, just a bit of a bummer that she didn't get her first few choices. She ended up with the duck tacos which were good. We started with the brussels sprouts, which were also good and had nice presentation. We also started with bacon wrapped tots, the dish came with four of them and chili ketchup, beautifully presented, and rich, creamy, crunchy and yummy. I ordered the braised beef and fry bread and it was my favorite thing, very beefy flavored, warm and rich on soft pillowy fry bread with some cool crunch and crispy, thin plantain slices, very good. We started with a Chocolate Cherry Old Fashioned that was delicious. Overall the food was very good and the value was decent at around $12-$16 per plate. Overall: this was a really good experience and I'd go back to try some of the things they were out of and enjoy the incredible bar and stellar, considerate, thoughtful service. What a GEM to find this place while on a work trip. The atmosphere is speakeasy like, warm & cozy. The service is friendly and efficient. Kasa was my server and she was helpful in choosing some amazing dishes. The restaurant is small plates or tapas which is nice to be able to sample more of the amazing menu. I ordered the pearadox cocktail which was tasty. My first dish was the squash bisque (didn't get a picture because it smelled too good and I finished it fast). It was an incredible mash up of squash, peanut and coconut crème. There were some red peppers afloat and a little kick to it as well. My second dish was a signature of Chef Ty, the roasted roots and squash. Delicious root vegetables and squash, with some crème and dukkah. I could have eaten two or three plates. My final dish was the braised beef and fry bread. Imagine a cloud of puff pastry filled with the most delicious and tender beef you ever have eaten. I really wanted to try some dessert but just couldn't bring myself to do so. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area or VA Beach too, not too far away. My friends ordered the beef tartare served with sharp Dijon, briny capers, and silky egg. Not my style, but they enjoyed it! The star of the night was the scallops. Three scallops, served in a white wine sauce packed with flavor, fresh chive oil, and salmon roe. So much flavor in this dish, I loved it. The chicken piccata a close second favorite. Topped over homemade fettuccine with parmesan, lemon and capers. To finish, we enjoyed the bread pudding! It was warm, tasty and not too sweet. We all indulged in this one. No problem getting a last minute reservation on a Friday night. Vibes in the dining room were just right. Our server, Kasa, was wonderful. Everything we ordered was delicious. The cocktails were on point and the wine list is really well thought out. For high end wine drinkers - you'll find some deals here you won't find in any other restaurants in Hampton Roads. Still is a wonderful surprise! The chef is a magician. Ty has created an eclectic tapas menu, that is energized with spices and concepts from around the world. Every dish is prepared on order; from scratch. The beef tenderloin , Shrimp & Grits, charred Brussels sprouts, cheese board, beef flatbread, Mac & cheese, were all sublime. The tastes were out of this world and required absolutely no added salt, pepper, or anything else. I'm so happy we had a table of 6. This family style gathering allowed for additional tastes, we would have missed. We almost never order desert but felt compelled to see what additional surprises awaited. Ty's custome orange Cheese cake, creme brûlée, and a wild chocolate concoction put us over the top. Ty prepared one of the finest meals I have ever had. The restaurant is located in the basement of a historical home, that was used as a hospital in the civil war. The bar has over 200 different spirits, and a well stocked wine cabinet. The bartender is a true mixologist. The drink, and wine menus complement Ty's fabulous dinner menus perfectly. They have been open for 18 years. What a find. I did not get any water or my other drink for 45 minutes. Many people just walked out. I was apologized to by the chef at the end of the three hours but it was too late by then. We enjoyed Still! Great vibes and unique downstairs speakeasy vibes... they have an expansive wrap-around bar area with tons of bar seating and then high-top and couches to hang out. We dined in the main dining room and our server, Christopher, was excellent. He paid just enough attention to us, was able to answer easy questions, and quickly resolved any issues we had. The food was so-so... probably a 3. But the ambiance, bar and service were solid 5 so I'm rounding up to 3.8-4. We had: -a few mocktails and whiskey drinks - great prices and huge selection of whiskey and wine -crab dip -halloumi caprese -veggie dumplings -seared tuna -bison meatloaf -raspberry cobbler The crab dip was SO salty. Toast points were delicious and perfectly toasted but the dip itself was sooooo salty. The dumplings and capers were very good. Tuna and bison meatloaf were delish. We asked for the tuna to be medium/well/well bc I'm pregnant and it wasn't right at first, but was quickly remedied by the kitchen. VERY good and served with a side of seaweed salad. I went here for the first time in ages, and I was so pleased with the food and service!! Everything was absolutely delicious. The vibe in Still is oh so chill. It puts you in the mind of a speakeasy, but with good food to match the specially crafted spirits. Most of their items that have breading are gluten-free friendly, and all of their pasta is gluten-free, which made me ecstatic! The calamari was cooked perfectly. There was just the right amount of crunch without being too hard. The maple bourbon glazed carrots were quite tasty - I even shared with my group. The bacon-wrapped tots are a must -- even if you don't eat pork, I mean it's bacon people!! The lamb was cooked perfectly and served with goat cheese, Brussel sprouts and fig jam...yum yum yum! Our visit was horrible. They were very under staffed in all areas. The bartender was our waitress plus the bar ppl n all restaurant drinks. It was crazy! The kitchen guy also ran food. There was NO hostess either! New menu items are nice! They really need to work on coordinating food a little better. The new bacon wrapped tater tots are not anything like the old ones. Should have kept old ones. It was not the same quality of food as it used to be before. We keep trying but now we will definitely not be back. So you walk in and it definitely hits all the marks for a speakeasy, kinda hidden door, a little walkway down into the restaurant makes you feel like you are away from the world. It's a great place for a date but at the same time I could literally hear everything the couple next to our group was talking about because our tables were almost on top of each other. Service was quick and efficient without being overwhelmingly on top of us. They tell you a head of time that it's tapas, so small portions and no order as to when the food comes out just when it's ready. But everything was fresh and delicious so I'm alright with it. The drinks were very artistic, some tasty others not so much, in some cases my friends said they were hard pressed to spend 13$ for that cocktail when the amount of alcohol was low but on the flip side others were very strong and definitely worth the price tag. So kinda split on the drinks. Now the food. ..omg delicious. I had the fillet rare and I'd order it again in a heartbeat. Perfectly cooked, the potatoes with it were delicious, and the sauce mmmm *chefs kiss* the creme brulee was delicious though the hard shell was not as caramelized as I'd like no crack when I struck the top. Good concept. Confused execution. It was Sat in the summer so maybe they didn't have enough staff? No one told us about the specials. We happened to notice the board on our way out. We also didn't see anywhere the menu prices are cash only and there is a 3% surcharge until the bill came. There were no bus boys or servers so the waitresses were running like crazy busing tables and bringing wine bottles and glasses in addition to serving and taking orders. The food - if I had this at my foodie non chef friend's house it would be amazing. At fancy restaurant prices - I kept hearing Gordon Ramsey in my head. The octopus with crispy potatoes? Octopus was a little tough. The potatoes were not only not crispy but undercooked/raw in the center. The duck breast? Super salty in spots needing salt in others. The roasted carrots also unsalted while the asparagus could disguise itself as a salt lick. And the duck came out cold/room temp while the rest of the dish was hot. The trio of sausages (I'm fairly sure they're just D'artagnan brand) came out after the rest of the tapas despite being ordered at the same time. Wow! I loved everything about Still. The ambiance is so cool. It has a speakeasy vibe as you enter through a door on the side of a house. As you enter the restaurant, you see a bar and lounge. The dining area feels like you're relaxing over a meal in a friend's house. The variety on the menu was fantastic! We tried the bacon wrapped tots, vegetable potstickers, and charcuterie board as appetizers. Great portions for appetizers and prepared perfectly. For meals we got the cast iron filet with mashed potatoes and meatloaf with asparagus. It was one of the best meals I've ever had. Desserts were absolutely delicious as well. I want to start by saying I have been coming to Still for many years and it has always been my favorite restaurant in the 757 but I fear that has now changed. I have referred, quite literally, hundreds of people to Still. I have been seven times since the new chef started and the menu and food quality has progressively gotten worse. Most recently the bacon wrapped tater tots were cooked far too long (burnt). The Bison sliders were also overcooked and lacked in overall quality, the buns were stale and they were garnished with pickle on top of the bun which does not fit the flavor profile and just made the stale bun soggy, they were also really lacking on all the toppings. Please bring back old menu items like wild game sausage, red pepper bread, potstickers and regular crab dip. The new chef is slowly destroying one of the last gems in the area. Please don't forget about your regulars that have kept this place in business for years. The only reason this isn't a one star review is because of the bartender Christy. She is phenomenal, her service is always impeccable and her drinks are always top notch. read more

Still is a hidden gem in the Hampton Roads area. I had gone a few years ago for a birthday dinner, and finally made it back. I brought my boyfriend for his first experience, and her really enjoyed it. He's a big old fashion drinker and he actually said that the old fashion at Still is one of his favorites. We were in Portsmouth for an event, so we stopped by for drinks before the event and came back afterwards for a night cap. It was cool that the bartender remembered what drink I had from the visit earlier. The staff was a little understaffed, but I commend them for holding down the restaurant, and doing it with great personalities. We will definitely be back to try out the food next time. I also love the atmosphere and the music of the restaurant. There are not many places in the Hampton Roads area that give you the speakeasy feel and I think that Still gives that feel. I've watched kitchen/bar/server staff come/go for almost 15yrs. I think the original Chief/ Owner's name was Mike (?). He would "ALWAYS" come out to the dinning area for a meet/greet if not to busy in the kitchen to ask how you were and how was the food. Well, Mike (?) branched out with other investment colleagues, opening other restaurants in the 757 and the service went up/down over a decade. Tonight's Menu Choices - *No fresh gluten-free baget like before, just some over toasted gluten-free melba like toast. *She Crap Dip: Re-label, she crap soup with cheese. *Roasted Brussel Sprouts - Luke warm *Duck Tacos (My Favorite)- The Aeoli has changed over the many years, depending on what new Chief is in the kitchen, but the duck meat was just above "Luke Warm." and the parsley or/maybe arugula (?) was wilted as hell. *Cajun Pasta- one real shrimp, you can see its little tail sticking up in the pick. There were a few IHOP style tiny salad shrimp in there, but the kitchen over compensated the dish with Andouille Sausage *Bone Marrow - Love the meat jelly, it's not popular in the south, was "SO HAPPY" you put in on the menu, my wife never tried, I took the "LITTLE SPOON" scraped it out, put it on a piece of G/F toast and fed it to her. Guess what, THAT, was the only slather of meat jelly between both bones! Nice filling of parsley & garlic, filling the other spaces. *Scallops were perfect! We were headed to a concert last night at the Atlantic Union Pavilion in Portsmouth, and wanted to grab dinner first. We called ahead and made a reservation. It was a busy night (concert night), so the staff were attentive but quick. I had the Lavendar 75 cocktail and it was delicious! A great option if you like sweet. My husband had his go to, an Old Fashioned. It was hard to select dinner options with so many choices, but we knew we would get 4 max. We settled on the mac and cheese, fried oyster mushrooms, duck tacos, and bacon wrapped tots. The max and cheese came out first and it was BEYOND impressive! It was so cheesy (good cheese too!), flavorful, and piping hot. I could have eaten a full bowl! The tempura oyster mushrooms were next and the batter made the dish divine. Very crispy with flavorful ponzu sauce and aioli. Duck tacos were next and we were nicely surprised that it was a hard shell. The duck was tender and tasty. Last were the bacon wrapped tots. They seemed to have a cheese mixture, which was very nice, and the ketchup were fig and raisin flavored which was pleasantly different. We even saved room for dessert. The bread pudding was moist and the sauce provided enough flavor to complement the dessert. 4 STARS! I really loved this tapas bar. Tapas are always a little pricey, but we thought a couple of the dishes could have been a few dollars cheaper. Maybe in another economy, I get it. This is a hidden gem. Awesome place for a date not a kid place. It has that old time speak easy vide down in the basement of a historic building. The food is amazing the tuna was perfect the char from the grill was nice not over cooked, the mussels were also good only problem was I wanted more. The duck tacos were ok not that they were bad I was not impressed with the BBQ chili style sauce on them they were not bad just ok. The sweet potato fries were very good seasoned well. The Brussels sprouts were awesome so simple but very good, the scallops were great again I needed more, the quail was excellent the plate was clean when I was done. The food was all around awesome I was not a huge fan of the duck but that's ok the rest was so good the service was very good I made a reservation for 6 and it was mostly empty around 7 it started to fill I left around 8 and there were few seats the bar is very well stocked the drinks were solid no complaints the whiskey selection is vast. I have walked by this place in the past and never gave it a chance what a mistake. I would definitely go back this may be my new go to. I've been wanting to come to the establishment for a long time, and I finally made it. To be honest, the visit was a little underwhelming. We stood at the door, waiting for a table for about 10 minutes despite the bartender staring at us every 5 minutes. I will say...I understand during these times people are short staffed, and places tend to get busy. That said, when we finally were seated it was in the most awkward place. We ordered two drink's (luckily they were good) and two small plates. ( I cant even remember what they were because after the looong waiting in between orders, we decided to leave and go to our "old faithful" back in va beach.)
