We stopped in to see this place after the First Friday Sip & Stroll in downtown Portsmouth. We heard this was a cool little hidden gem, in a building that's been around for a couple hundred years and is partially underground and very "speakeasy like". Super glad we stopped in, the vibe is incredibly comfortable and cool and envelops your soul. Ambience: super cool, comfortable, a little dark, exposed brick walls with plaster patches, hardwood floors, heavy wood and leather furniture, incredible bar that is more like two bars in an L-shape with an unbelievable selection of anything you could ever want. This place is very solid feeling, you just feel safe and tucked in. Service: was fantastic, we met the executive chef named Ty who greeted us before we even sat down, just saw us sitting in the foyer bar and came over to say hello, very cool. We were greeted and seated by an absolute sweetheart upfront named Jackson and our server couldn't have been nicer, her name was Casey. Food: the food is all served tapas style, smaller plates, but well curated with interesting and innovative ingredients with beautiful presentation. Unfortunately, they were out-of four things that my wife wanted, she didn't want all of them simultaneously, she wanted one and they were out, and that happened three more times. Apparently, they often order in smaller batches and buy locally so sometimes they don't have as much as someplace buying in bulk, that's as much a positive as a negative, not a bad thing, just a bit of a bummer that she didn't get her first few choices. She ended up with the duck tacos which were good. We started with the brussels sprouts, which were also good and had nice presentation. We also started with bacon wrapped tots, the dish came with four of them and chili ketchup, beautifully presented, and rich, creamy, crunchy and yummy. I ordered the braised beef and fry bread and it was my favorite thing, very beefy flavored, warm and rich on soft pillowy fry bread with some cool crunch and crispy, thin plantain slices, very good. We started with a Chocolate Cherry Old Fashioned that was delicious. Overall the food was very good and the value was decent at around $12-$16 per plate. Overall: this was a really good experience and I'd go back to try some of the things they were out of and enjoy the incredible bar and stellar, considerate, thoughtful service. Maybe it was just an off night, but the food was honestly immaculate--no disputing that! They're also upfront about the portion sizes, so I knew exactly what to expect with the 4 oz portions. I do think some of the menu items are a little pricey for the amount of food you receive, so slightly lower prices or more generous portions would make the value even better. This particular night they were out of a lot of things, but our server let us know ahead of time before we got to attached to those menu items. We ordered four food items total. Our first two orders and drinks came out relatively quickly, but there was a mix-up with our second orders and they were forgotten. However, they were very willing to make it right and even brought out extra portions, which I really appreciated. Our server was also amazing--a Black girl with short hair who was attentive, kind, and made sure we were taken care of. Between the great food and the effort to correct the mistakes, I'd definitely come back and give them another try. I'd probably just visit a little earlier rather than so close to closing. read more

What a GEM to find this place while on a work trip. The atmosphere is speakeasy like, warm & cozy. The service is friendly and efficient. Kasa was my server and she was helpful in choosing some amazing dishes. The restaurant is small plates or tapas which is nice to be able to sample more of the amazing menu. I ordered the pearadox cocktail which was tasty. My first dish was the squash bisque (didn't get a picture because it smelled too good and I finished it fast). It was an incredible mash up of squash, peanut and coconut crème. There were some red peppers afloat and a little kick to it as well. My second dish was a signature of Chef Ty, the roasted roots and squash. Delicious root vegetables and squash, with some crème and dukkah. I could have eaten two or three plates. My final dish was the braised beef and fry bread. Imagine a cloud of puff pastry filled with the most delicious and tender beef you ever have eaten. I really wanted to try some dessert but just couldn't bring myself to do so. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area or VA Beach too, not too far away. I love a good crab dip, and this one definitely hit the spot. The baked brie was oozing with truffle and honey! Topped on top of a crispy baguette, it was the perfect balance of flavors. My friends ordered the beef tartare served with sharp Dijon, briny capers, and silky egg. Not my style, but they enjoyed it! The star of the night was the scallops. Three scallops, served in a white wine sauce packed with flavor, fresh chive oil, and salmon roe. So much flavor in this dish, I loved it. The chicken piccata a close second favorite. We are foodies and I can say this was some of the best food we have had. They did a great job elevating what would normally be a regular menu item. The filet was so tender and the burst of flavor from the mustard and potatoes was amazing! The brussel sprouts were prepared superbly and the black garlic glaze was a very nice twist from the traditional balsamic glaze. Highly recommend the corn bread (with that butter!) and beet salad as well. They were quite busy (which is a great sign when trying a new restaurant out of town) and only had seating at the bar. They let us know up front that food was coming a little slower which we greatly appreciated, and continually apologized. (We actually reminisced on an experience at a 'great' restaurant in Inner Harbor, blocks from our home-it was busy so we sat at the bar to have dinner and for 30 minutes they didn't acknowledge us despite trying to get their attention. We left and have never returned). We weren't in a rush at Still Worldly and appreciated their hospitality so it was fine...and worth the wait...we savored each plate as it arrived. The last time I had a lychee cocktail that excellent was in Aruba. The brown butter pisco was a miss--watery, bland, and smelled unpleasant (and I love pisco cocktails). My husband didn't mind the guava cocktail but won't order it again. However the food hit every note. We ordered tomato tartine, filet, zesty lemon duck confit ravioli, bourbon roasted carrots, and my goodness the crawfish/crab etouffee dip and that wonderful toasted yet perfectly chewy rustic bread...transported me back to New Orleans. I'll be dreaming about it, mouth watering. Service was great. Atmosphere and vibe are cool, dim, speakeasy chill, and lovely. It had been over a decade since we last went to Still. We decided to go for our twelve year anniversary as a trip down memory lane as we frequented it while dating. Best anniversary meal decision. Between the five of us, we probably ordered about half the menu and every single plate they brought out was delicious. Still is a wonderful surprise! The chef is a magician. Ty has created an eclectic tapas menu, that is energized with spices and concepts from around the world. Every dish is prepared on order; from scratch. The beef tenderloin , Shrimp & Grits, charred Brussels sprouts, cheese board, beef flatbread, Mac & cheese, were all sublime. The tastes were out of this world and required absolutely no added salt, pepper, or anything else. I'm so happy we had a table of 6. This family style gathering allowed for additional tastes, we would have missed. We almost never order desert but felt compelled to see what additional surprises awaited. Ty's custome orange Cheese cake, creme brûlée, and a wild chocolate concoction put us over the top. Ty prepared one of the finest meals I have ever had. The restaurant is located in the basement of a historical home, that was used as a hospital in the civil war. The bar has over 200 different spirits, and a well stocked wine cabinet. The bartender is a true mixologist. The drink, and wine menus complement Ty's fabulous dinner menus perfectly. They have been open for 18 years. What a find. The food was so-so... probably a 3. But the ambiance, bar and service were solid 5 so I'm rounding up to 3.8-4. We had: -a few mocktails and whiskey drinks - great prices and huge selection of whiskey and wine -crab dip -halloumi caprese -veggie dumplings -seared tuna -bison meatloaf -raspberry cobbler The crab dip was SO salty. Toast points were delicious and perfectly toasted but the dip itself was sooooo salty. The dumplings and capers were very good. Tuna and bison meatloaf were delish. We asked for the tuna to be medium/well/well bc I'm pregnant and it wasn't right at first, but was quickly remedied by the kitchen. VERY good and served with a side of seaweed salad. The raspberry cobbler was disappointing. Next time, we'd go with the whiskey bread pudding. It was served as two little cups... kind'a plain and not that special. All in all - unique and fun. It puts you in the mind of a speakeasy, but with good food to match the specially crafted spirits. Most of their items that have breading are gluten-free friendly, and all of their pasta is gluten-free, which made me ecstatic! The calamari was cooked perfectly. There was just the right amount of crunch without being too hard. The maple bourbon glazed carrots were quite tasty - I even shared with my group. The bacon-wrapped tots are a must -- even if you don't eat pork, I mean it's bacon people!! The lamb was cooked perfectly and served with goat cheese, Brussel sprouts and fig jam...yum yum yum! Our visit was horrible. They were very under staffed in all areas. The bartender was our waitress plus the bar ppl n all restaurant drinks. It was crazy! The kitchen guy also ran food. There was NO hostess either! New menu items are nice! They really need to work on coordinating food a little better. The new bacon wrapped tater tots are not anything like the old ones. Should have kept old ones. It was not the same quality of food as it used to be before. We keep trying but now we will definitely not be back. So you walk in and it definitely hits all the marks for a speakeasy, kinda hidden door, a little walkway down into the restaurant makes you feel like you are away from the world. It's a great place for a date but at the same time I could literally hear everything the couple next to our group was talking about because our tables were almost on top of each other. Service was quick and efficient without being overwhelmingly on top of us. They tell you a head of time that it's tapas, so small portions and no order as to when the food comes out just when it's ready. But everything was fresh and delicious so I'm alright with it. The drinks were very artistic, some tasty others not so much, in some cases my friends said they were hard pressed to spend 13$ for that cocktail when the amount of alcohol was low but on the flip side others were very strong and definitely worth the price tag. So kinda split on the drinks. Now the food. ..omg delicious. I had the fillet rare and I'd order it again in a heartbeat. Perfectly cooked, the potatoes with it were delicious, and the sauce mmmm *chefs kiss* the creme brulee was delicious though the hard shell was not as caramelized as I'd like no crack when I struck the top. The dining area feels like you're relaxing over a meal in a friend's house. The variety on the menu was fantastic! We tried the bacon wrapped tots, vegetable potstickers, and charcuterie board as appetizers. Great portions for appetizers and prepared perfectly. For meals we got the cast iron filet with mashed potatoes and meatloaf with asparagus. It was one of the best meals I've ever had. Desserts were absolutely delicious as well. Good concept. Confused execution. It was Sat in the summer so maybe they didn't have enough staff? No one told us about the specials. We happened to notice the board on our way out. We also didn't see anywhere the menu prices are cash only and there is a 3% surcharge until the bill came. There were no bus boys or servers so the waitresses were running like crazy busing tables and bringing wine bottles and glasses in addition to serving and taking orders. The food - if I had this at my foodie non chef friend's house it would be amazing. At fancy restaurant prices - I kept hearing Gordon Ramsey in my head. The octopus with crispy potatoes? Octopus was a little tough. The potatoes were not only not crispy but undercooked/raw in the center. The duck breast? Super salty in spots needing salt in others. The roasted carrots also unsalted while the asparagus could disguise itself as a salt lick. And the duck came out cold/room temp while the rest of the dish was hot. The trio of sausages (I'm fairly sure they're just D'artagnan brand) came out after the rest of the tapas despite being ordered at the same time. Don't miss this hidden spot in basement of building located one block away from High Street (which is the Main Street in Portsmouth) ENVIRONMENT Pub atmosphere with lots of wood decorating bars and walls in this basement restaurant. The building looks nice but you enter a side door and go down stairs to enjoy the Still. FOOD This is Talas style so you need multiple plates per person (2-3 based on hunger level). It's most fun shared in a small party so you can share the plates and try more dishes. DUCK TACOS This is their most famous dish. Served in crunchy shell tacos. The duck meat reminds me of pork used in tacos. The sauce is what made the taco special! BAKED MAC 'N CHEESE This was my personal favorite. They use four cheeses and top with crunchy onions. Unlike most baked Mac 'n Cheese, this wasn't overly rich nor cheese overload. It was perfectly balanced! BAGUETTE AND STRAWBERRY MINT BUTTER They made an extra loaf by accident so offered it to me which I couldn't turn down. The bread was warm and had a nice crispy crust with airy bread in center.
