I've got a Toyota Corolla that I just get traditional work on (oil change, break check, rotate tires) and am very pleased with Grand Imports. They're a very honest place to get your work done and I was recommended by another satisfied customer. When I went in a few months ago, they found a nail in one of my tires--they said they could fix it for a fee, but that there was a place up the road that'd do it for free. They gave me their address and encouraged me to go there. My most recent visit they again said I had some good life on my breaks. This is coming three years after a shady dealership told me I needed to get my breaks fixed immediately. They also let me know what new parts they'd want to get for my 60,000 mile check so I could plan finances accordingly. Overall, very satisfied. They usually get me in within a day and I've never had a problem with the owner or any of the staff. I'll keep using them as long as I live in Austin. read more

What place can you take your car, where they will actually say, "no your brakes are still good. You don't need new ones," And proceed to hand you the keys. I would highly recommend to anyone. The brakes on my '97 Odyssey were squealing a lot, to the point where other people were noticing, so I took it in to Grand Import to have it checked out. They did, and said "nah, you're just a soft braker [this is true], you still have 40% of your pads left on front and rear brakes. Good to go!" How often does that happen? They could've replaced my brakes and I wouldn't have questioned it, so they passed up a chance to make some cash because they were honest. Those guys are fantastic. Five stars! read more

I have a '98 Tacoma 4X4 that was having trouble holding an alignment and had front end vibrations, and I was pretty sure that it needed new shocks too. I took it to a well known alignment place down on Burnet, and they suggested replacing the rack, at a cost of $800 to start with and see if that fixed it. If that didn't work, keep throwing money at it till they figured out the problem. I could have bought a rebuilt rack and replaced it myself for $300 so I decided to try another place. I live down the street from Grand Imports so I gave them a call and set up an appointment to drop off my truck. I received a call from Misty about halfway through the day, and she ran down a list of problems with the truck and asked me if I wanted quotes for everything or if I wanted to pick and choose, depending on my cash flow. I stopped by after work and Misty told me that the rack was NOT the problem, the inner and outer tie rods needed to be changed as well as the ball joints. I also needed new shocks, which would be cheaper if I brought in what I liked and they installed them. Charlie, the mechanic told me that I also had a pretty severe drive-shaft vibration and recommended Inland Truck Parts to take a look. I took my truck to Inland, and through a miscommunication between management and the workers out in the shop, they rebuilt my drive-shaft, carrier bearing and all my u-joints for free. The manager apologized for doing the work, then mentioned I probably wouldn't have any problems with it for a long time. Needless to day, if I do, Inland definitely gets my business. I dropped my truck off with Charlie and Misty the following monday. Before the end of the day, I got a call from Misty letting me know the truck was done, and could be picked up. The price was great, the time it took to work on the truck was extremely reasonable, and the quality of the workmanship was excellent. After driving the truck for a few days, I was very impressed with Charlies work. After everything was said and done, I cannot recommend them enough. Took my old Civic hybrid here because it was having some trouble with the IMA and/or general on-board computer, resulting in lots of dashboard indicators. The good. They fixed most of the problem by replacing the IMA computer. To do this they apparently had to get some used hardware. I don't remember whether the used component was to save me money or because it was the only way to fix the car. In any case I appreciate this. The cost was reasonable. The best part is I avoided having to buy a new IMA battery. Also, everyone I dealt with in person was very pleasant. The bad. The communication was abominable. At one point they were waiting for me to call them with a decision when they had never called me to ask the question in the first place! Also I had to prod them for details about what their diagnostics found, and it was like pulling teeth. I am also a bit irked that one of the dashboard indicators ("SRS") remains on, without explanation. I would take my car here again, but would probably hesitate. read more

I can't say enough about the crew at Grand Imports. I took my Tacoma in after work to talk about having a driveline issue looked up later in the week. Lucky for me they had a tech available to drive my truck and give me some advice. Before I knew it, the tech had my truck up on a lift and checking it over. That's killer customer service! I figured I was going to have to make an appointment to drop it off but they had it up in the air and gave me an expert opinion on where I should start. They really knew how to gain my trust. There were no pushy, pricey repairs mentioned or any of that. They recommended I try something first before having them look at it again. Awesome people!! I've gone to Grand Imports since 2012 because they specialized in Honda, Toyota, Acura, Lexus, and I loved their work. I sold my Acura in 2016, but we bought our daughter a 2000 Toyota Celica in 2014 so I continued a business relationship with them, even though I sometimes had it serviced in Leander. The check engine light came on a couple of times and we had it fixed locally to allow us to get it inspected, but it would always come on again. This year I took it to Grand Imports. I thought pay once, and it's fixed forever. I took it in on May 9th, Misty said she'd run a diagnostic test and call me. Hours passed and when I didn't hear back I called the shop. I spoke to Liz who told me Misty wasn't there, but she'd have her call me. I decided to have my friend run me back up there. When I arrived Misty had come and gone and Liz said that Misty had written down my phone number wrong, that was why no one had called me, no biggie. Error codes P0440 and P0446... replace parts and retest. Misty called me later to say Liz's $672 quote was wrong and the new total was $768... I didn't like it but agreed. When the parts came I went back on May 12th and said to Misty, "This is going to fix the check engine light, right," to which she responded, "Yes, that's what the diagnostic said." After 40-45 minutes she came and said they'd sent the wrong part and asked if I'd take a loaner so they could keep the car over the weekend. I declined because my daughter can't drive a standard and I thought she needed her car. Misty accepted absolutely no responsibility for the wrong part mistake. She actually said, "My mechanic wasted all that time for nothing," as if that was the injustice. Misty then got up and left the shop as I sat there for 10 minutes wondering, "Why didn't you check the parts before scheduling me back in?" Ten minutes later Liz said I'm ready to go, meaning my car had been put back together (after Misty had just made such a big deal out of wasting her mechanic's time). Later, I told Liz I wasn't happy about how this had been handled. She was apologetic but also made an excuse. I told her I'd like a discount on the upcoming bill for wasting "my" time. She said she would have Misty call me. When I started the car up to leave and pressed on the gas it hesitated a bit and seemed to shake a little, something didn't seem right... It had never done that before. I made a mental note to let Misty know when she called, which I did. I called back Tuesday May 16th and scheduled a 1pm appt... I took the car in and after 2 1/4 hours in the waiting room I was told it was ready. The receipt said (Remove and replace charcoal canister and canister close valve @ air filter housing. Customer states car is idling low after the repair attempt the other day - rechecked and all work performed at specs. (I didn't say that, I told her it hesitated when I stepped on the gas and shook a little.) I also told her, my daughter told me that it shook violently at a stop light yesterday and acted like to was going to die, but didn't. No one had driven the car from Friday until she drove it to work on Monday. The receipt also said (Cleaned throttle body as a good will to customer for extra trip due to circumstances out of our control - Wrong part delivery from Toyota (Ha, checking to make sure you were sent the right part before calling me to come back is not out of your control). I payed the $666 bill and after 7 miles the check engine light was back on... I called Misty immediately and took it back. She took the car back to run a diagnostic test and came out 15 minutes later with a print out that said (P0171 Fuel trims are too high and engine is too lean; possible mass air flow sensor, fuel injector, manifold gaskets, 02 sensor etc... Need Diagnostic time)... Which she said would be another $98 to start and wanted me to leave it there. Needless to say, I was livid. I said I just paid you $666 dollars and you admitted to not retesting the car before giving it back to me, or you would've seen the newer code. (I specifically asked if it had been retested). When I asked to speak to the owner "Ian" she refused... told me he was out of town, but then changed her story. She refused to give me a refund or my key and said she's trying to do her job and needed to complete the paperwork for me even though I told her I didn't want it. I am so very disappointed in what happened at Grand Imports today. If she screwed me over after 5 years of customer loyalty she'll do it to you, too! I'd like to hear from the owner, "Ian"! To be clear: I've had excellent experiences in the past, but today was actually a ZERO rating. You can't take my hard-earned money, not fix my car, and I be happy about it! Followup 06/06/17: Selling the Toyota and noticed screws and bolts are now missing from manifold. They screwed me more than I knew! I started taking my first Honda Accord to Ian Sommerville's back around 1994. I have NEVER had to take my car back because it wasn't fixed right the first time. They have even performed minor repairs and when I went to pay was told "don't worry about it". For reasons like that it has made me a loyal customer. The repairs are done quickly and correctly and the price is very reasonable. I know they will never "over" diagnose something in order to make a buck. They don't need to because they have plenty of business already. If you are thinking about buying a used Honda/Acura or Toyota/Lexus I highly suggest taking it to Grand Imports for a thorough going over before you buy. I purchased brand-new rotors for my Honda, and I had Grand Imports install them. After completing such repairs and test-driving my vehicle, the person in charge at Grand Imports contacted me to let me know that the car "still vibrated like crazy when braking," and she emphatically stated that it meant that the rotors were warped right out of the box. Up to this point, my vehicle still had the old brake pads installed. Grand Imports would charge me $290 to true all four rotors. This was not a choice for me given the fact that the rotors were brand-new. I contacted the rotor company for options on how to get my rotors fixed. The said company requested some measurements on the rotors to determine if they were in spec. Because Grand Imports had told me that the source of the problem was warped rotors, I requested that it take those measurements. Grand Imports charged me $49 for this service. Meanwhile, Grand Imports had advised me that my brake pads should get replaced as well. Initially, I authorized the charges to true the rotors and install new brake pads front and rear as well; however, because I needed to deal with potential warranty repairs or exchanges on the rotors, I quickly got back to Grand Imports and requested that the rotors be left alone, as is, and to go ahead with the installation of new brake pads all around instead. I decided to drive the car with the new brake pads to determine what level of vibration when braking remained and I also needed to follow up with the break-in procedure for the rotors recommended by the rotor company. Total charges for all these services at Grand Imports came to almost $700. I picked up my car and started driving it around following the braking instructions from the rotor company to break-in the rotors. I did several aggressive stops, drove around for two hours, and no matter how hard I braked or how many times I did it, I never felt any vibration coming from braking. Indeed, the braking on my car was silky-smooth. I did not detect the slightest vibration whatsoever. Everything was perfect. Because I did not find any problem with my car, I immediately notified the person in charge at Grand Imports of my findings and requested a $49 refund for the fee to measure the rotors. I am glad that I did not authorize the $290 repair to fix the apparently "warped" rotors!! To my surprise and big disappointment, Grand Imports refused to refund me the $49 because I "requested that charge." Indeed, I authorized the charge, but I did so solely and entirely on clearly incorrect diagnosis and advice given to me by Grand Imports. My car brakes are perfectly fine. There is no noticeable vibration when braking. Surely, the new rotors eventually will need turning due to wear and thermal stress. All rotors eventually do need that. Right now, they do not need repairs of any kind. Grand Imports indicated that after installing the new brake pads, that the mechanic still felt some vibration. Well, I have driven my car for almost 20 years, I know it very well. It DOES NOT vibrate at all. The brakes are fine as is with new untouched rotors and new brake pads. Grand Imports can argue until the cows come home over what level of vibration, if any, remains. Bottom line, my car DOES NOT vibrate like crazy, DOES NOT vibrate at all when braking. It is perfectly fine. Grand Imports position that the vehicle still has "some vibration" apparently detected only by its mechanic is a ridiculous, silly, and inconsequential argument akin to someone who would do whatever it takes to not acknowledge and own up to his or her mistakes. I have no problem with paying all the charges incurred in the installation of the rotors and brake pads, but I have a big problem paying Grand Imports $49 for a service that my car clearly did not need. Again, I authorized the charge due to bad advice given to me by Grand Imports. Grand Imports refuses to refund that charge. That is the crux of this issue. After so many years of servicing my cars at this place and thousands of dollars spent there, it is very disappointing to see that Grand Imports appreciation for my customer loyalty was worth a mere $49. Now I am very wary of Grand Imports maintaining my cars anymore, especially when I don't seem to matter as a loyal customer. I will not take my vehicles to this place ever again for any reason. read more

I have taken my Camry to Grand Imports several times over the past few years and have always had excellent service. They can arrange to drop you off and pick you up, which is very convenient, or they also offer a loaner car on some of the bigger jobs they've done for me. Their prices are competitive, they always ask before doing the work, and they don't pressure or try to scare you into doing unnecessary work. The ABS module went out on my 2007 Camry, and it was very expensive to fix; they were honest enough to tell me that it would not affect the performance of the car (although it did make the speedometer and air conditioner go off and come back on at random intervals). And they understood why I didn't really want to spend that much on an older car and said they would probably do the same. Turns out there's nothing wrong with my control arms (big surprise).
