I can no longer recommend Atypical Mechanic after how they have recently treated me. I originally used them in 2021 and left a 5* review for them, but the short story is they quoted me a flat $120 diagnostic fee, showed up and did the diagnostic and asked for $240. We were able to work that out, I thought, and I left a 5* review as they did do the diagnostic I paid for. Fast forward to February of 2022 and I had them back for a different problem, and they diagnosed the problem as needing a right front wheel bearing. Took the car to Juke and did the job and that didn't fix the problem at all. After some diagnosis at Juke, they said I would need the left front wheel bearing and new engine mounts to fix the problem. $2,000 in repairs later, the problem went away. I never left Atypical a bad review for their diagnosis even though it was only 1/3 of the problem. Lucky for me, Juke was nice enough to waive their diagnostic fee to find the real problem. Fast forward to 2023 and I emailed them for a few price quotes for other jobs. After some back and forth, they told me they are "not the best fit for [my] mechanic needs moving forward." I don't remember anything happening when they did the diagnosis in 2022 other than their tech leaving an expensive tool in my vehicle which I contacted them to return. I guess they finally decided they were mad from 2021 that they didn't get another $120 out of me? I don't know. I asked for clarification on what their issue is but they refused to explain if it was anything other than the first incident. I've paid my invoices and have no issues with Atypical Mechanic, so I'm not sure what their issue is with me. UPDATE 03/29/23: Jeremy makes two points in his response. First, that I knew the diagnostic fee was hourly. This is incorrect, and his original message says: "Our evaluation fee is $120. This is also our hourly fee so if your evaluation is under an hour the remainder of that fee would go towards the repair." The first sentence says the evaluation fee is flat rate $120, not hourly, and only talks about a discount applied to the hourly rate for repair. It's poor wording on his part, and when we spoke on the phone Jeremy seemed to understand where I was coming from. Apparently that was not the case, and two years later he still feels like he is in the right and I'm combative. Second, he says I cancelled multiple appointments within an hour which is just a blatant line. I looked over all of the emails, and here are the timelines for all of my appointments: 01/31/22 @ 3:02pm: appointment scheduled for 02/11/22 @ 1:30pm 02/10/22 @ 2:57pm: rescheduled appointment for 02/14/22 @ 11:30am (22 hours in advance) 02/14/22: appointment kept and paid $120 diagnosis 02/14/22 @ 3:49pm: appointment scheduled for 02/24/22 @ 1:30pm 02/23/22 @ 7:34am: appointment cancelled (29 hours in advance) With Atypical's appointments running 2 weeks in advance at that time, it was hard to know my schedule that far out. I rescheduled and cancelled when I found out I would not be available. 22 & 29 hours does not seem egregious to me, and I'm sure you filled those holes if you were booking 2 weeks out. But to say I cancelled MULTIPLE TIMES and WITHIN AN HOUR is an outright lie. You can say that you found me combative, but don't lie, Jeremy. Not a good look when I can pull up the times from my email to prove you're wrong. read more

Contacted Jeremy over the holidays with issue exhaust coming into my car, he performed a smoke test and checked all around my engine for oil leaks. He was very thorough and honest. I had other help from other mechanics, not that they were bad, but Jeremy was more knowledgeable and informative. Replaced alternator on 3/14/22. I was stuck out in the middle of nowhere in S Texas. 3 hours away from home. Battery started losing voltage. I had zero choice to get to a local mechanic there in town to have the battery/alternator tested. The battery passed, after they charged it, but alternator failed. I had to go to a parts store to buy a battery and have the mechanic replace it. $200, I was on the road. I called the warranty company (as Atypical) doesn't warranty their own work) the warranty guy told me that unless I had a work order from the 2nd mechanic, they aren't going to honor the warranty. I just got off the phone with Fallon (office manager) I was upset, because of the warranty company not honoring the warranty. Fallon was extremely rude and condescending...I have the whole conversation recorded. She was belittling and even said "it's not my fault you were in a small town that doesn't do repair orders" she had no sympathy or empathy for the stress that I was under. DO NOT use them....they use parts from Orielly's and ask any mechanic ad a huge majority of them will tell you how crappy their parts are. read more

My daughter managed to wrap her phone charging cord around her steering wheel (don't try this at home, folks!), severing the cable (aka clock spring) that allows the horn to function while the steering wheel turns. Her car had been out of commission for other reasons and was unregistered, so was left parked for awhile. We wanted to have the car checked out for safety and driveability, but since it was illegal to drive (no insurance or registration) we needed a mobile mechanic. I found this company by searching for within my neighborhood's Facebook group. It took a week to get an appointment (which I viewed as a good sign), but the day Jeremy (and Don, his helper) showed up, they inspected the car, described what was wrong with it and fixed it within a matter of a few hours. They seemed to work efficiently; Don disassembled things while Jeremy picked up the parts. The bill wasn't cheap, but the competence and convenience of the operation makes it a five star business. I really liked that Jeremy didn't talk down to me, as some mechanics do with women. All in all, this was a good experience. read more

I'm grateful to have a mechanic that I trust. And it's not blind trust. It's based on my experience working with Jeremy for 5 years. I'm by no means a mechanic but I know enough to know when someone is making stuff up. I'm the only person I know for example who owns the shop manuals for all of my vehicles. I'm genuinely interested in learning about the way my car works and understanding why things fail. This makes me an ideal candidate for mobile service on most repairs. I appreciate having the ability to poke my head out there and see what's going on. I love the transparency. I love being able to look at an old part and feel the satisfaction of having a new part go on. Not only does Jeremy make repairs competently, he really shines at diagnostics. I've taken my car to dealerships where they've charged me hundreds of dollars in diagnostics, thrown hundreds more at repairs, when they could have solved the problem with a $30 oil analysis. Working from home makes mobile service a great option. You will need to be a little flexible with appointment times if you are not the first job of the day because there may be a repair before you that runs long so keep that in mind but it's still better than waiting at or dropping my car off at a shop in my opinion. read more

We've used the Atypical Mechanic 3 or 4 times over the past year and the service has been outstanding. Our personal car and business truck were stranded in the street and driveway so we logged on to their site and booked an appointment for them to come out to the house rather than pay for a tow to a garage. Booking the appointment online was super-easy, and the rates for repair were comparable or less than what it would cost if we went to a shop. Considering we didn't have to pay for a tow, we saved a lot of money! Our mechanic, Jeremy is always nice, professional, knowledgable, and clean. And during this pandemic follows COVID safety guidelines and sanitizes the vehicle when he's done. It's also super-convenient having the mechanic come to your house on your schedule. No more dropping the car off after hours or at the break of dawn. You have to be crazy not to take advantage of his service! read more

Gary was a pleasure and explained everything in non-mechanic terms. He diagnosed an issue with my car that Auto Zone and Flamingo auto repair on Guadalupe both couldn't figure out. My car is running smoothly again. I purchased a new starter and Gary installed it. I called around to see if I could find it cheaper and sure enough, Atypical was the cheapest. Glad I took my brother's recommendation and called them. It is also incredibly handy that they come to you. My massive apartment complex is confusing for visitors and Gary found me without any issue. Car: 2012 VW Jetta For a few years, my rear passenger door's actuator (automatic locking mechanism) was broken. If I I didn't lock the door manually, my car would try to automatically lock all doors in vain. Obviously this is quite annoying when it does it - every. garsh. darn. second. Granted I was a poor grad student at the time and never had more than one passenger for awhile so I put it off. Finally, with a new job and good cash flow I looked around for a good mechanic and obviously came across this grand crew. Much as you see in the other reviews, Atypical (a MOBILE mechanic) is trustworthy, reliable, and honest mechanic(s). Setting up an appointment all the way through repairing my door was quite easy. The crew came by my apartment at a reasonable time and was able to repair it within an hour. They also checked out some tire wear that they ultimately recommended an alignment. Which of course I would have done if they had the equipment. All-in-all I 100% recommend Atypical and would gladly use their service again. read more

These guys were absolutely amazing. Highly professional and courteous. They came out and even though it took a bit longer than they anticipated to show up, they kept me updated - so no complaints there. You can't predict how long car servicing will take - so super fair. When they did show up, I got a really great service. The main mechanic told me what the issue likely was, and recommended the most affordable option to try first. I really appreciated that transparency and honesty. You don't always find that these days. Within less than an hour, they had solved my problem (a horrible, ominous clanking sound resonating from the car anytime I would go below 20 mph or turn). These guys are my go-to mechanic for now on. I've been using The Atypical Mechanic since 2018, probably about 5 or 6 times in total since I was a freshman in college. Every experience I've ever had with their mobile mechanics was very professional, and they're all very kind. My last appointment I had a series of issues - starting with my brake lights never turning off and ending with my battery being dead. I was told this was fixed by my mechanic, and it was not. I took my car to get a car wash some days later and once I returned home my brake lights stayed on until my new battery that had just been put in died again. I spent around $360 in that initial appointment and am left with a dead battery and a burnt out brake light. Yet I also understand that mistakes happen. The real root of my issue is that I texted my mechanic back after he asked how my car was doing to tell him what had happened and he never responded. I wasn't even expecting any sort of reimbursement or free/reduced fix. I just respected them enough to expect some form of response. I was fixing that car up to sell and was going to sell it for $1100, and now I have to scrap it and make $165 because I can't waste anymore money fixing this battery. I've actually just lost around $200 in this whole process. I think they're very nice people, but it really is just unfortunate that I probably won't be using their services again. read more

Atypical is probably the best mechanic service I've ever used - and the fact that they come out to your home or work place makes it even more convenient. If they're running late, they make sure you are well aware of it and have always been extremely apologetic if that happens. I have used them several times in the two years I've lived in Austin, thanks to my "wonderful" Ford Fiesta, and I've never been disappointed in the work. They're honest and the prices are fair, and I've never felt pressured into any type of extra work. When my car was giving me lots of issues last year and they came out multiple times in two weeks, they were extremely flexible and helped get the issues figured out ASAP. I'd say the best part is how willing they are to explain what they're doing, how things work, what it means, etc...I'd say the worst part about being a woman with car issues is feeling like you're being talked down to or like you're stupid and can't possibly understand what is going on. I used the Atypical mechanic after it being recommended by a neighbor. It took 4-5 days to get an appointment, no problems there just a bit of a wait, I know they're busy. The mechanic showed up, his name was Jeremy, very professional, knowledgeable, and a nice guy. 5 stars for Jeremy. But... it cost me $450 just for him to diagnose my car, which is quite expensive for no actual repairs. After the diagnosis, he scheduled me for repairs a week later. Again, not a big deal, but we're now looking at over 11-12 days to get the repair going. He wanted to charge me 350 for the parts, and 400 for the labor. Which is quite expensive, so I went to an auto shop and bought the parts for around 120 dollars and did the repair myself in about 20 minutes (over 600 dollar savings). It was just spark plugs and coils, not very complicated. This didn't fix the issue with my car though, so I went and bought the other part he was on the fence about the car needing during his diagnosis (this wasn't factored into the price of his initial 750 dollar estimate), an ignition control module. This cost me another 100 bucks or so, 10 minutes to install. Overall, I saved a ton of money doing this myself. But again, it didn't fix the car. So... finally, after doing some research as to what the problem could be, there was one final part the car likely needed (a crankshaft positioning sensor, quite difficult to install oneself on my make and model) I bought the part and called the Atypical Mechanic to see if they could change my appointment to where they could just install the new, potentially key part that I needed, and not do the initial work on the first estimate (because I had already done it.) They said, nope, we can't install parts that you buy yourself, we have to charge you more money to keep diagnosing the car and charge you the premium for the parts we buy and the labor we provide. Therefor I canceled the appointment because I couldn't realistically risk giving this company any more money to keep diagnosing my car after their first diagnosis didn't fix the issue. So, I can't highly recommend them. If they had been willing to swing by and put in the final part for me, I'd have no negative feedback after giving them so much money. I think I'll get the car towed to a traditional shop, or try and find someone who can help me put in the crankshaft positioning sensor. I think a 3 star rating is quite fair, if not more than fair, for my experience. read more

No call or email to let me know they don't do this service. So if you need mobile tire service, call Berto with 24-Hour Tire Replacement, and not necessarily these guys. EDIT: I want to edit to add that Jeremy just called me to apologize and was uber-cool. Perhaps an addendum to your website, Jeremy, to read that you don't provide a tire service might be helpful. Just had brakes done and for 25% more than quoted. Now I need new ones already?! Not even a year!!!

I recently brought my car into Juke Auto for an oil change. They told me my brake pads were at 2mm and 3mm and that they needed to be replaced immediately, along with the rotors. They quoted me $1000. I checked around and after seeing all the great reviews for the Atypical Mechanic, I decided to give them a call. After doing a brake check, Jeremy let me know that my brake pads were at 4mm and 5mm. He told me he could change them but that didn't need to be done right away. He also told me that the rotors were just fine. I went ahead with the brake pad replacement anyway. It took about two hours and Jeremy also let me know about two filters that he suggested I change (and he even showed me so I could see how dirty they were rather than just trust him). My total bill for the brake pads on two axels and the new filters was $400. I am SO glad I called the Atypical Mechanic! I absolutely recommend them and will be back myself. I will start off with the good which elevates this review from one star to two stars. The communication with the owner was very good prior to the service call. The mechanic that was sent out was on time and friendly. That's it. That's where the good stops. I needed a new car battery. My trusted mechanic quoted me $130. After reading some reviews about mobile mechanics online I chose Atypical Mechanic. Their price list online, based on my year, make and model of car, stated it would be $150 plus to change out my battery. Sure, I know $150 is not written in stone but they had the year make and model of my car and new exactly what I needed, so I assumed it would be at least near the ballpark of $150. Wrong!! Not even close! $230 plus!! I could have jumpstarted the car myself and driven it about a mile to my regular mechanic. What a learning experience this was. To top it off, after the mechanic got here and confirmed what I told him was the problem, he had to call the office to find out pricing. We waited and waited and waited for a return call from the office. After waiting at least 15 minutes standing in the hot street, he came back with the $230 plus quote. At this point in time, so much time had been wasted and I had some where to be, I very reluctantly just went with it. NEVER AGAIN!! Oh, and by the way, I asked for the lowest mileage and warranty battery they had before they came out so they would have one with them, as this is a very old car of my son's that is on it's last leg. So this was not a high end, high mileage, high warranty battery! I blew over $100 extra :( read more
