    brisket dip
    Peggy W.

I had eaten at Grand Lake Kitchen on Grand Ave years ago, but this branch in the Dimond district was new to me! They had special hours this Labor Day so met up with another couple for dinner. It was very quiet, likely because they're normally not even open on Mondays. It was still very pleasant and my friends and I enjoyed a great evening. I had the beef brisket dip and I was afraid that the amount of bread would overtake the meat, but it was perfectly balanced. I enjoyed every bite of the brisket with the caramelized onions! My husband had the American burger, and though he said he's had better, he was still satisfied with it. For sure the fries were good! I had a Ginger Julep that was refreshing, and we each had a donut for dessert (4 for $7.00!). Service was great, food came out quickly. I love it when everyone's food comes out at the same time so there's not the awkwardness of waiting for others to get their meals before digging in! This location used to be a Chinese restaurant that we used to patronize all the time before Covid.

Saturday morning breakfast! Good food and great service on a Saturday morning at Grand Lake Kitchen in the Dimond. This location is easier to park and get a seat than the Lake Merritt location. I was with a group of 6 people and the service was attentive and prompt, the food recommendations were on point and we shared donuts for dessert, but they were gone so fast I didn't get a picture!

I came here to celebrate a family party, and my cousins rented out the back room for our group. The space comfortably seated about 20 of us, with room for even more, and it was perfect for a private gathering. My cousins put together a very thoughtful brunch, which made the experience feel extra special. The waitress was very attentive and regularly checked in to see if we needed refills. The food was served buffet-style and had a great variety, from potatoes to French toast. My personal favorites were the sausage and fried chicken--they were delicious. Overall, I'm so glad I got to make meaningful memories here with my family. I'd definitely love to come back soon to try more items from their regular menu.

The food was so delicious and and excellent breakfast or brunch option. The staff were so friendly and helpful when we asked questions about the menu items. The restaurant was full of life and everyone there seemed happy so good vibes overall!

"GOOD FOOD IS MY FAVORITE THING" I struggle packing a lunch each day besides that I enjoy eating good food not prepared by me ! I ordered door dash delivery. GRAND LAKE KITCHEN serves yummy lunch food items. The CALI MIXED BOWL is full of lemony goodness on top of a bed of peppery arugula with soft pita bread slices. The salad ia VERY, VERY GOOD add a side of tuna or chicken salad. ENJOY !!! Treat a friend it's too good to share. :-) I also ordered on a different time the YADI sando it includes cranberry sauce, pickles, pickled onions, tomato, avocado, turkey, lettuce a spicy mustard and mayo ... it's one of those "Heck Yeah!" moment :-) PACKAGING: simple plain brown bag UTENSILS: and napkins not included FOOD: super delicious DELIVERY: fast PRICE: reasonable "People who love to eat are always the best people." We live in the neighborhood and used to order takeout from here all of the time but the prices keep going up and the portions have gotten so small it's actually insulting. I ordered hanks plate this morning and was barely given one egg worth of scrambled eggs, and the toast slices are half the size they used to be. Charging $25 for this is genuinely insane. My spouse also ordered the burger and the patty was super over cooked and dry. Huge bummer.

A nice floor layout and large enough for party seating, a specialty bar set in the neiborhood blurring lines of Lurrel and Diamond district parts of Oakland as far as atmosphere goes. We came on a mid-afternoon and had a choice from a brunch and diner combination menu. I had a unique dish that was a tortilla breakfast type dish. Who dosent like nachos? This was something simular however no . The poached eggs where cooked perfect and I was glad I ordered an additional on because two would not have been enough for the ample amount of chips. The black beans in this was enough to complete the Latin recipe configuration close to nachos, but the picked onions was a complement to the eggs and . I suggest asking for a side protein because without it most carnivores like me would not consider it enough or filling. My partner was on her second day of being underwhelmed with "standard dishes" that you expect more from a resturaunt but still ate her French toast out of hunger rather than liking the dish. As thick as the bread was I imagine she left full but the batter seemed lacking of any vanilla, nutmeg or cinnamon which are traditional as I know it. From the one bite I had I suggest trying the savory French toast which seems like good ingredients listed on the menu. I almost ordered it. This will be a place that I will return to try other dishes and the bar .

So I did return because I couldn't stop thinking about the potatoes (see photos) and I'm really glad I did! This branch of Grand Lake Kitchen has now become a regular brunch spot, and is helpfully open on holiday Mondays. Service can still occasionally be off, like totally forgotten coffees or those aforementioned flaky servers, but the food consistency makes it worth it. Must add that the outside seating is really pleasant and shady with comfy seats as well as being dog-friendly.

The food was great honestly, I don't normally eat american brunch but it definitely gave me high expectations. Every dish was made really well and the burger was the best. The only issue was the Vicious Salad, could've used more dressing but I hadn't realized there was really crispy bits of bacon towards the end so maybe that was why. Service was ok! We noticed our server read out specials to other customers rather than us, but at least she was nice! 5/5!

Enjoyed a Saturday dinner out with a group of friends. Wasn't very busy for a weekend evening and the ambiance was low key. I had the white linen, which was average for a cocktail. I did enjoy the Yadi sandwich with side of broccolini. It was huge and very filling! We shared the chicken wings to start and donuts for dessert, which were average.

The space itself is attractive, with festive music and a lively atmosphere. It looks and feels like it should be a fun place to eat. I started with a Pisco sour, which was okay. Then I ordered the pulpo a la parrilla. The octopus seemed practically raw when it arrived. I sent it back, and when it returned it was incredibly chewy and still inedible. I'm not sure if the chef was having an off night, but something was clearly wrong with the preparation. I switched to the Costillas de Chancho, BBQ pork spare ribs with mashed sweet potatoes. The plate arrived with the mashed sweet potatoes literally steaming, in a way that made them seem freshly microwaved. The waitress tried to explain that the steam was from frying the ribs, which didn't really make sense, especially since the steam was clearly coming from the potatoes. Why are BBQ ribs being fried anyway? The ribs were also extremely chewy, and the mashed sweet potatoes were bland with almost no seasoning. The waitress had specifically asked about allergies or food preferences, and I told her I didn't like onions. The replacement dish then arrived completely covered in onions. Why ask if you're going to ignore the answer? Service wasn't great either. I had to take silverware from another table because I wasn't given any, the waitress wasn't particularly attentive, and the hostess seemed like she didn't want to be there. Then, to top it all off, the check had a 3% "operations fee" added to it. I didn't see this disclosed anywhere beforehand. Adding an unexplained fee at the end of an already disappointing meal just left an even worse impression. Nice-looking space and festive atmosphere, but unfortunately that's about where the positives ended for me. Two poorly prepared dishes, inattentive service, and a surprise fee on the check. I had high expectations based on the reviews, but I would not come back.

So been living in Oakland for going on 15 years now. I'm not what you would call a "bar" person. I…read moretend to enjoy my cocktails, wine, and beer in the cozy confines of my own home. That said I'm occasionally inspired to go check out the local watering holes for a good pour, some food if possible, and just to be in the presence of the human pulsation. Walking into Tallboy on a Thursday afternoon was a bit like Nirvana for me. There is a comforting vibe of neighborhood and after work people shedding responsibility and "toe the lineness" and transitioning to pondering true meaning and the other side of the elliptical bend over nicely crafted cocktails and HOTDOGS! I am a hotdog fiend, and Tallboy has a very creative range on the menu that does not disappoint. From a basic onions/mustard, an Elote Dog, an a Coney Islandesque (it has chili) version. Some folk go to bar and line up shots (or craft cocktails). At Tallboy you can do that AND line up their hotdogs which I intend on doing in the very near future. The pleasantries don't stop at the food (there are other delicious snack items on their menu to choose from too). Tallboy has a fully stocked bar, and the menu has a list of really unique and delicious signature craft cocktails. I'm not a Mezcal drinker, but I ended up dubiously ordering their Guava Martini which to my smokey surprise is made with Mezcal. I stayed with the smokey fruitiness of this Guava Martini as it was my mistake that I did not read in the description it is made with Mezcal, and ended up chasing it with their Tamarindo Cocktail which also has Mezcal. To those who really enjoy Mezcal the Tallboy Guava Martini and the Tamarindo Cocktail do not disappoint. Both have that deep Smokey Mezcal essence, but cut with the fruit sweetness. I personally think the Tamarindo balances well with the Mezcal. The Guava Martini the Mezcal comes through stronger, but both are just the tonic to release any existential pinging going on in your head. If you really want to kick in the hyperdrive pair either of these with an Elote Dog. I had their Deli Dog which sufficed. I think the Deli Dog would pair better with their standard Martini, but hey let's us not bring that snobbiness into Tallboy. Tallboy has an element of cloak and dagger or secret treehouse club about it. What I mean here is there is no signage on the outside (please keep it that way!). When you walk past all you see is this quaint beigeish/yellow brick façade of an establishment which begs you to press your face to the glass and scan what in the blazes is going on in here! Before you know it you are caught in the Tallboy tractor beam, and you find yourself sitting at the bar with some kind of craft drank and hotdog pondering the space and the very nice old fashioned wainscoting painted a shade of green circa 1930 (my description of winning in life). The cadre of bartenders are all really pleasant folk, very attentive (checking in with you to see if you need another round, hotdog, or snack), have tight shaker skills, and they know their craft and the menu. Tallboy also has SLUSHIES, and I did not do a deep dive on them, but I'm positive they may/do put spirits in them; or not. Also I noticed other patrons with a beautiful enticing thing that looked like an ice cream sundae milkshake hybrid (it had what looked like whipped cream on top) in on old timey soda fountain ice cream goblet. This could be a craft cocktail they make with the slushie, but major props for serving it in that goblet. I will investigate on my next visit which I intend to be very soon. Tallboy is the kind of bar establishment I could easily adopt as my after work living room for a couple of hours everyday.

Can't quite describe it but it didn't feel like an SF bar, felt more open and like a community watering whole. On to the food and drinks. I'm vegetarian so was so excited to try the dogs - which are vegan. And I may be biased but you cannot tell that you're missing out on anything with all the flavor packed combos. The bun was fluffy and soft and you have multiple fun themed options to choose from. My partner and I ended up getting the deli dog and truffle meltdown. Deli was perfect - classic mix of spice and crunch with the spicy brown mustard and giardiniera peppers. And the truffle meltdown was so savory and decadent - totally different flavor profiles from each dog! We were only going to grab one drink but the menu was so inventive we ended up getting two. I ordered the banana hammock (which comes with a fire show) and espresso martini slushee which was is up there with the frozen Irish coffees I've had in New Orleans. Man writing this has my mouth watering... definitely coming back for more dogs, drinks, and vibes!
