How have I grown up in the Bay Area without knowing about Crogan's? I was invited to attend a presentation (about cremations) and lunch was to be provided here at Crogan's. Nestled comfortably in a cute little section of shops in Montclair, it is conveniently located to public transportation, I decided not to drive and hopped on the 18 bus from downtown Oakland and it was a short 3-5 minute walk to the restaurant. As you walk in, you instantly notice how spacious the space is. Plenty of seating and a bar area- visually it gives me the vibe of "Cheers" and I'm waiting for Norm to walk in any minute. I arrived at 11:30 for the presentation and there were only a few people inside. Upon leaving a couple hours later, the restaurant was almost full on a Thursday afternoon. Our party was a total of 11 including our host and we were seated in a private area in the back. So this would be perfect if you are looking for a place to rent for a special event- it could easily fit 15-20 people. Now, on to the food- when I tell it came out piping hot and fresh! We were told that we could order anything off the menu up to $26. The menu cost range was about $6-30 so pretty affordable in this economy. I ordered the fish and chips as did a few other people. Everyone raved about how fresh their food was. My fries were seasoned perfectly and needed no salt. The fish was cod I believe and came with (3) medium sized strips and I got a side of coleslaw. The fish wasn't really seasoned at all BUT it was so crunchy and crispy (texture) and the inside was so flaky, tender and super fresh like they caught the fish outside. I was able to eat a couple of pieces and took the rest home- NOTE: the fish doesn't reheat well in the oven so it needs to be devoured when you order. The person to the right of me ordered the shrimp and avocado salad which looked really appetizing. A good portion of bay shrimp alongside ripe avocado, tomatoes on top of a bed of greens. The gentlemen to the left of me ordered a double portion of ribs. I wish I could've snuck a photo- the ribs were HUGE and he didn't talk the entire time which is a good sign. Overall, this is a family friendly sit down place with great American and Seafood options. Food is prepared fresh to order- I definitely will be back to check other options on the menu! read more

Came in at 700pm after a local event with a party of 14. We were greeted with no reservations and seated immediately. Our server Yahaira was a rockstar. Good menus selections they have something for everyone . Food was good, came temperature appropriate, and serving sizes were ample. Cocktails were lacking so I would stick to Beer or wine. Parking at that time was easy, right up front. Five star for Yahaira For sure. All employees were friendly. Seems like a neighborhood cheers. Give them a try. read more

Service was nice, they were decently attentive. The place was spacious and clean, when you enter the server will let you know you can sit at any table. There's both a fancy dining area with booths and a casual bar side with bar stools. The bf really enjoyed the fish and chips, he asked for malt vinegar to enjoy with it. The fish was fresh. The Sheppard pie was very hearty and comforting. The Irish coffee was a hot coffee liquor that was strong, make sure you mix it and take out the plastic mixing straw before it melts. The kids pasta was bland but good for kids that are picky. We will be taking it home and adding some seasoning and chicken to it for the kid's dinner. Fried calamari was fresh and tasty, I will definitely be ordering this again as an appetizer. Yum. Parking is limited with metered parking all around. read more

We met up with some friends for dinner at Crogan's Montclair. It's a corner restaurant with street parking only. Ambience: spacious, table and booth seating. It can hold a few large groups of people. They do have a full bar. Two separate multi-user restrooms for men & women. Food: *French Onion Gratinee: topped with melted swiss and a touch of parmesan (4/5). This was very good! It was flavorful, rich, and not salty at all! The melted swiss was gooey and savory. *Prime Rib (Served on Fri, Sat, & Sun): 12 oz prime rib served with baked potato and sautéed green beans (4/5). Luckily, they still had a medium rare piece left. Tender, flavorful and came with au jus, straight horseradish. The green beans were delicious also. *Beet Salad: red beets, green beets, roma tomatoes, feta cheese, and mixed greens tossed with a herb vinaigrette (4/5). My wife liked her salad. I thought it was pretty good. Our friends ordered their favorites of the...they looked delicious. *Baby Back Ribs: succulent pork ribs slow-cooked and smothered in their house BBQ sauce served with French fries and coleslaw. *Chicken Cobb: Roasted chicken breast, bacon bits, diced tomatoes, sliced avocado, crumbled Bleu cheese, & Bleu cheese dressing. Service: The waitress was very patient, helpful, and attentive. The busboy was helpful in clearing the dishes, refilling water, and drinks. Support your local business. read more

The Philly steak loaded with melted cheese and jalapeños is good. I think it needs more flavors. I only taste the cheese most of the time. I would like it more if it has more sauce on it. The sweet potato fries is good. I like it better than the regular French fries. Staffs are nice and serve your food in order. Many parkings available on the street. read more

I Like coming here. I had a Long Island ice tea requesting they use top shelf alcohol and was happy with the outcome. The crab cakes were alright. This appetizer typically is hard to please wherever you go. Often times it tastes like there is a lot of filler. Sweet potato fries were satisfying. Can't go wrong with them. I had the chicken linguine as my main entree for lunch. It could use adding more pasta. Can't cost that much more to add this to the dish. Would make for a happier customer. The dish otherwise was tasty. I am very pleased by the visual appearance of all the food and drink. You can't say that about all restaurants. read more

Crogan's has solid pub/diner food. They are great for groups. Service is always solid and friendly. We recently went here with one 90 year old, two eighty year old, three people in their 40's and 50's and a 10 year old. Two of our group were visiting from Brazil. And we had one vegetarian. We needed a place that was flexible and options to suit everyone. Crogan's definitely fit the bill. Shout out to the staff for accommodating all of our special requests with a smile. read more

Dramatic decline. There is a stench that hits you in the face when you walk in, like old wet wood that reeks of urine. The former employees, which were once the heart of a bustling spot, now make a very poor appearance in sweatshirts and a janitorial type look, stomping through an empty dining room without warmth or friendliness. There are two layers of music playing at once: the dining room music and the kitchen fiesta on top of it. Very sloppy everything. read more

I chose to dine in this restaurant for my birthday dinner and was unfortunately met at a crossroads. My group and I were quickly seated, and the server who waited our table was very attentive and pleasant. The environment was also calm, quiet, but also scattered with patrons who I sensed were regulars. While I found the menu to be quite appealing, and I also took my waiter's recommendation to have the Philly Cheesesteak over a burger, who said it was amongst the most popular items at the whole restaurant, it was anything but fulfilling. The amount of food for the serving was more than fair, but it tragically had no flavor whatsoever. It was so bland that I opted to take the remainder home because I simply couldn't enjoy it. Likewise, unfortunately, my wife's sandwich which was a French Dip. Both of us agreed that our meals were not necessarily horrible, they were just sadly incredibly underwhelming in regard to flavor. Fortunately, not all of our items were met with this disappointment, as my uncle ordered the Crogan's Hamburger which he rated 8/10. I asked him multiple times if he was certain that his burger and fries met his satisfaction, and he couldn't have been more reassuring that was exactly the case. As a result, I rate the Crogan's a 3/5. Honestly, everything was great except for the food and given I chose this for a birthday dinner, that only added to the disappointment. My take shouldn't deter others from coming to the restaurant aside from mixed takes on their cuisine. Francisco helped me out today. He went above and beyond with his 5-star gold service. I called in after hours asking for help and he stayed to offer me support with the kindest voice and warm energy. I've had the fish and chips which are amazing (I have high standards for this dish). French onion soup is on pointe and the clam chowder is pure comfort food. A few years ago, during COVID recovery, whoever was Crogan's chef was making some bad choices on product, especially fish. This has completely turned around. I've been here quite a few times since my review of a few years ago, and the food and drinks are back to being good. Favorites are Golden Bear Burger, Almond crusted cod and fish and chips. Some friends swear by the Cobb Salad and the Barramundi. read more

Crogans is a solid go to. I've eaten there in person twice and quite a few times via Uber Eats. When in person the service was decent. I've eaten the following: Braised Short Rib: Tasty and tender but could have used more seasoning Potato Skins: Delicious Black bean nachos: Yummy - lots of high quality cheese and I add steak. Steak and salad: Super fresh and a good portion of steak. I would request the meat be done a bit more. I want to say it was medium rare. But I will order again When you order with uber they give you a free cookie. The price point is a bit high but all the ingredients are high quality I like that the items come in containers that can be composted. read more

After decades of loving this place, bringing my kids here. Celebrating Piedmont High School football victories with my son, having been a loyal customer since the entrance was on the corner and the bar was in the front, I will never set foot in this place again. It has gone to hell. They 86'd two middle aged customers who had been customers since 1990 because we asked a group of clearly drunk 20-somethings talking so loudly in an empty bar that we were having to talk into each other's ears to keep it down our selves. The bartender who was the manager on duty had just ignored them. But when we politely ask them to tone it down the bartender backed THEM up saying "people come here to have a good time, and when the kiddos got in our face WE got thrown out. Don't EVER go there unless you want to be a rowdy jerk and have managers back you up. read more

What could be improved? The food. It's over priced and not good. I had fish and chips. The fish had the hardest, toughest batter and the fish was dry and overcooked. Or had been sitting under a heat lamp for quite some time. It was not a filet. More like fish sticks. Cole slaw had no dressing and no flavor. Fries were fine, but if you ordered just an order of fries it would set you back about $9! For fried potatoes! And onion rings are 2 figures! I think $13!!! Crazy prices for frozen food that isn't prepared well. What's good? The beer and the chilled glasses. The service in the bar was excellent. Our server, Christian took good care of us. First off, the services was less than acceptable. I was attended at 2:18pm and ordered my food. The food didn't come out until an hour later which was ridiculous considering there wasn't a lot of people within the establishment at this time. Love this neighborhood gem. Drinks are on point- I do wish they had an espresso machine for an espresso martini They should offer carajillo instead and just get the licor for that and offer it whenever anyone asks for an espressy martini I love anything blackened anything here. They do NOT overcook the blackened salmon and it's delicious every time, which i love. I'm honestly always skeptical to get salmon at restaurants and Crogans has never failed me. My friend loves their fried zucchini and I love the popcorn shrimp. Their calamari looks sad, but it's actually quite good. They have specials often, which makes me think they are having fun in the kitchen, which in turn makes me happy. I look forward to one day seeing fish and chips on their specials, since their clam chowder is pretty good. Oh yea, and the bar section really feels like a bar. I've watched Warriors finals games here too and it was fun. We stopped into this wonderful place yesterday after my husband and son finished golfing. It was around 5 o'clock and we just wanted a light bite. Our server was amazing. He anticipated our needs. I also asked for a side of vegetables and I can't have dairy and they were very accommodating. They brought the most delicious sautéed spinach. I think I've ever had. I also have their vegetarian black bean chili spot on. My son had the crab sandwich which was insane and my husband had the French onion soup. Total winner in his opinion. I happened upon this spot years ago when a friend recommended it, and it was fun and nice food. After attending the Greek Festival in Oakland, we wanted to have a late lunch somewhere else. I mentioned to my friends Montclair Village in O town, and we ended up here. We initially sat in the bar area. That said, it was nice but way too loud, so we changed to outside. The server was very nice and we ordered our drinks, and the food came out shortly after. One of my friends ordered the Brussel Sprouts, I ordered the Golden Bear Hamburger and my other friends ordered the Pulled Pork Rib. Overall the food was good, seating outside was nice. We enjoyed our time and there was a very nice couple seated across from us with their little Gerber Baby Food little girl, she was something. :)Was great to be in a friendly atmosphere with good food and awesome friends. read more

Ordered Braised Short Ribs ($24.95): came without either soup or green salad. Not even a roll or piece of bread. Tasted fine but could've been seasoned more. It was overcooked to point of shredded meat rather than a braised rib. "Garlic" mashed potatoes: garlic might have been in the kitchen nearby. AND Fish & Chips ($17.95): got 6 ketchups and no tartar sauce. Fish & batter bland, bland, bland. Tartar sauce might have helped but... Haven't been to Crogan's in ages and it was the perfect place to have a reunion luncheon with an old friend that I had not seen in 57 years. It was a rainy day so dining outdoors was not an option so I went inside to the cozy bar to order an Old Fashioned while I waited for my friend arrive. Inside the dining room, social distancing was strictly enforce. Our server Eduardo was excellent. I ordered a small salad and the Braised Short, tender braised beef with a demi glaze served over mashed potatoes and sauteed Brussels sprouts which was superb My friend ordered the Steak and Salad, sliced 6 oz char-broiled to order and served over mixed greens with tomatoes, red onions, blue cheese crumbles, and herb vinaigrette. The good news is that the clam chowder was some of the best chowder I've had. As you can see from prior reviews, I've loved this place. Super disappointed however with the dinner tonight. I've been coming here for 20 years. I usually can count on Crogan's to offer exceptionally sophisticated food for reasonable prices. Tonight, we ordered three dinners which were just barely above bar food in preparation and creativity. My braised short rib dinner was full of fat and had no real flavor which I would expect from a well prepared rich braised short rib. I've made short ribs before. The cut that was offered tonight had more of a pot roast texture. - stringy and a bit tough. Also, we ordered two Seaglass Pinot Grigio's - $20.00. I don't think I've ever seen such small wine glasses before. The service was competent although MIA most of the time. To be honest though, I don't like having my entrée shoved in front of me when I haven't finished my soup or salad. That's never happened to me before at a restaurant. Overall, I'd rate this experience a D+. Matt says there are more interesting places locally to eat that offer much more creative food. read more

Wow. I'm stunned. I stopped in to meet a friend at the bar for a drink around 8:45 Saturday night so he could grab dinner and go we could catch up at this local establishment I hadn't been to for years but have a history with going back close to 40 years. At one point my friend got up and asked a very (very) loud table behind us if they could lower their volume just a bit just because we had a hard time hearing each other. Respectful request and not obnoxious about it. The bartender admonished us! He said we had no right to talk to other patrons and that if we didn't like the volume we could move elsewhere and nothing should interfere with the table. I saw nothing wrong with the simple request and someone from their (very drunk) table even offered to pick up our tab, seemingly acknowledging they were being obnoxious. Things weird with the bartender and he was mad at us for merely asking them to tone it down. As we left we Said how shocked we were at our treatment and yes, I did say f-u. Bartender followed us out of the bar and told me I should never again return. I'm 60 years old and not used to being 86'd from bars. Absolutely shocking and I will never return. I will think fondly of the old days of crogans where I used to drink beers with vida blue and other local celebrities post A's games. read more
