Somehow the biscuits were awful, it tasted like they had used to much baking soda, they tasted sort of bitter. They forgot about the bread pudding until I asked about it later. My husband's omelet had an insane amount of black pepper in it, see photo. He could only finish half. Each time I've been here I have received good service. The wait time has always been very reasonable and the mood of the location has always been pleasant. I'd say the best way to describe the atmosphere that I've witnessed is that most patrons I've encountered have usually chosen this restaurant as a place to meet family or friends to catch up on lost time. I'd say that, that makes for an enjoyable dining experience. One thing I unfortunately have to note, is that the food has always been average. It absolutely has never been bad, but it's never been anything special to where I'd ever go out of my way to come here again. But I think the Black owner passed and his Asian wife tried to take over (not really sure so don't take my narrative as the gospel). Went through years of changes. Bought by Ethiopians. The new owners are wonderful. They are so welcoming and make you feel right at home, just like a sweet little neighborhood diner should. They kept the menu for brunch the same, but they execute it with a lot of finesse and flavor. Hidden gem off Park blvd in Oakland . Sister decided on this place after seeing it on tv. Small spot on the corner with seating outside if want . Greeted by everyone upon entering . Great decor on the walls . We had a party of 7 so it was a big group. They put a few tables together to accommodate us. Upon sitting menu's were handed out . Breakfast and lunch is available on the menu with a few tasty looking items . Different items were ordered as we would share and try it out as this was our 1st time here. Food came out hot and we were impressed like I said it was 7 of us at the table . I must say that the buttery French toast was a hit !! The best I've ever had and I had to thank the owner and chef personally !! Overall family enjoyed the meals that were made and will return with other family members to enjoy this place . I came here for the first time on New Year's Day. They were a server down so there was a little bit of a wait, but the servers were so nice and thanked us for waiting. And the food was really good too. They made a substitution for me and didn't charge me extra. The inviting interior was cozy, bright and comfortable to eat and visit with our friends. On street parking made it easy for me as I walk with a cane and got close to the place. I stopped by blackberry bistro early on a Tuesday morning for breakfast. This is the second time I've been to the restaurant. Just as before, I found the service to be very friendly and the food was delicious. I had the California eggs Benedict. The eggs were poached perfectly. The hollandaise sauce was lovely. The addition of avocado really made it all creamy and good. I also really like their biscuits. This was served on a biscuit instead of an English muffin. the biscuit soaked up the hollandaise and the egg yolk perfectly. They were all served, ate and left before we even got a word. After a whole one hour, they brought us an order that was the 4th table that were seated after us which of course we didn't take. I haven't been to this place in years, and was craving the "Down South"plate I remembered. The eggs and bacon were decent. The grits were watery and I received maybe two tablespoons worth? The skillet potatoes were burnt and also another sorry sized portion. I received no grilled tomato even though it's in the menu description. This is a review of the secret dinner spot, African/Eritrean food (NOT the brunch place- I've been for brunch and it was overpriced and meh). This needs a separate yelp page because it's one of Oakland's best hidden gems. People are sleeping on this place, most likely because they don't know it exists. The bistro turns into a completely different restaurant for dinner each night 5-10PM. Food is incredible, very flavorful with lots of options (even vegan). Portions are generous and dishes are reasonably priced. Staff is very friendly and made great recommendations. My husband and I both had a Sambusa appetizer (his had meat, mine was veggie). Flaky, crispy, flavorful goodness. The sauce they served it with was amazing. I had the Kantisha (mushroom), which was vegan, and they were able to make it for me without onions. It also had a side of an okra dish, which in not usually a fan of, but this was very good. Perfectly spicey and tons of flavor. My husband had the meat combination, he ordered it spicy but said it wasn't very spicy. The lamb was very tender and it exploded with flavor from all the spices it was marinated in. We were also served a ton of injera with our dishes and had leftovers to take home. My husband had a beer as well. Part of me wants to keep this a hidden secret (we only found out from a friend), but they deserve a lot more business. The real issue: We ordered poached eggs, easy -- they came out nearly hard-boiled. Both plates. When food is prepared that poorly, the right thing to do is politely let them know, and leave. It may feel dramatic, but it sends a clear message. To their credit, they comp'd the meal and were very apologetic. I also apologized -- but I couldn't in good conscience stay and eat. read more

This was my second time I've gone to Blackberry Bistro in the last 10 years and it did not disappoint. The service is excellent, the ambiance is incredible, quaint and nicely decorated. I ordered the Vanilla Orange French Toast and the flavor was out of this world. The vanilla and orange complimented one another and along with the exterior crunch that led into the soft interior, it was just the perfect bite. The Chai Latte was flavorful, great spicy flavor and not too sweet. My son ordered the Hamburger and enjoyed the flavors. He said the only thing to make it better would have been cheese. I eat a lot of pancakes. I love pancakes. I have eaten pancakes at 60 different breakfast joints in Oakland. I think this is the first place I felt deserved a review. So it must be special. They have a variety of pancakes. My favorite is the Orange Buttermilk ones. They really are some of the best cakes I have eaten. My wife and I have eaten breakfast there about once a month for the last 3 months. I think we will continue to frequent the Bistro especially as the weather is warmer and the outside tables have a great Southern exposure. Except that my bacon was burnt. You know that brown color of bacon when it's over cooked in a microwave? If I had dropped it on the floor, it would have exploded into a million pieces.
