My wife and I stayed here for our anniversary for a few days off season (mid March). It was really an excellent little getaway with many pros and only a few cons This resort specializes in golf...golf...GOLF (haha) during the summer, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have much to offer in the winter. There is an AMAZING spa (excellent sauna, hot tub, indoor pool, great massages), basketball and tennis courts, arcade, axe throwing, mini bowling, and indoor golf simulators. And if you prefer to just not leave the room, very comfy beds with couch seating at almost 400 sq feet per the most basic room (next time we stay here we will probably stay on the tower side of the resort where the rooms are even a little nicer). What we also loved here was the food. Aerie restaurant might be our new favorite restaurant in Michigan (close toss up with The Chophouse in Grand Rapids). See a separate review of mine for more particulars. There is also amazing room service, Niiji restaurant downstairs next to the lobby (great breakfast menu), and Jacks where you can get a good pizza or cheesy bread with awesome drinks. As for the cons, there are two: 1. A little pricey, and will only increase as we get more "in season." For the extra cost of an airplane ride, we could get a suite in downtown Vegas at the Golden Nugget, Plaza, or a luxury mini suite on Michigan Avenue in Chicago for the same price per night here of a standard room. That doesn't necessarily mean the price is not worth it here. Just be prepared is all. 2. Kids. Ugh. During the week there were not many people staying here, but as the weekend crept up more families arrived. Of course all it takes is one mommy and daddy to get drunk at Jacks downstairs while letting 3 ten year old buffoons run up and down the hall six floors up knocking on doors and running away to peeve folks like my wife and I to really put a damper on things (I don't mind admitting I don't like kids-lol. I have my own children and grandchildren-that's enough for me). The point is... do not confuse this with an adults only sanctuary. That is not what this place is. Just be prepared. Overall the score here is more like a 4.5 vs a true 5, but I'm rounding up as my wife and I were able to create some precious memories. That is bigger and better than any high price or annoying kids. Job very well done by the GTR&S. Looking forward to coming back here next year perhaps for a golf outing. :) read more

Great hotel in Traverse City. So many amenities and really nice rooms and fantastic staff throughout the hotel. Some of the amenities include pools, workout rooms, wedding planning, a little shopping area in the mall where you can buy candy or clothes, some hiring shops as well. They also have a free shuttle over to the casino, you can also rent ATVs or electric bikes, or other outdoor activity vehicles. The room was nice and open with a couch with a pullout sofa and a large bed a refrigerator, a coffee maker. Everything you could need a really nice desk. The furniture, including the bed was very comfortable. The hotel was very clean halls had lots of space so people could pass at the same time without running into each other, lots of seating areas, both on the floors of the hotel, and in the lobby area. In addition, there are a number of conference room, rooms or ballrooms for you to utilize if you wanted to have an event here. They also have an ax, throwing area, escape room, and a bowling area. This is a place you can really have a great experience. It is about 15 to 20 minutes out of Traverse City so you don't have all the traffic and congestion and you can do a lot right here at the hotel or by utilizing their shuttle. A really great property with great people at a very reasonable price for as nice as it is. Just blocks off the beach. read more

tower room was $450.00 during the week. we had to change rooms as we were put next to the elevator...very noisy. Dinner at Arie was over $250.00 ...the sea bass was about 3 ounces with no seasoning, the elk loin was barely edible...menu was very limited. when we informed our server that the steak was not good, they credited our salad. the steak was $82.00 and the sea bass was $58.00. you are definitely paying for the view and not for the quality of the food. keep driving... no food options after 10:00... not even a vending machine. had to go to 2 different floors to get a $4.00 bottle of water...very dissatisfied! read more

The buildings and property are gorgeous, however we had a less than 4 star experience staying here. The female bartender at the golf clubhouse was the rudest employee I've ever encountered in life. She was rolling her eyes, had an attitude, and snapped at us verbally for ordering some basic food and drinks in an almost empty club house. You have to call for room service to come by, we have dirty towels and trash overflowing currently. The staff had the shuttle take us to the pool/beach amenity, and when we arrived it was totally closed due to the wildfire smoke. No one let us know. We were stranded without bathrooms, towels, food or drinks. Finally, I found blood on the wall and our air vent was covered in hair and dust. This is a less than 4 star report in my opinion, with beautiful views and a nice building. read more

This place was a big disappointment and hardly felt like a resort. We could've had way nicer accommodations for $350 per night had I stayed someplace else. Horrible shower, stains on the bed linens, broken door, and super hot and stuffy hallways and common areas with no air-conditioning. To top it all off, we had no maid service whatsoever and had to clean our own room with even taking out our full garbage containers. We also had to go to great lengths to get new clean towels ourselves. read more

This was our first and likely last stay at the Grand Traverse Resort. It was my fiancé's birthday, and while we usually stay at Delamar, we wanted to try something different since the price was good. We booked a tower room. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Pedro, who was not particularly welcoming no hello or welcome, just a basic request for my ID. The room layout was great, but the "golf course view" was more of a parking lot view (though everything was snow-covered, so I understand that may affect the experience). Unfortunately, the room itself was not clean. There appeared to be mold in the ice bucket, white sticky stuff on the cabinet under the TV, handprints on the shower glass, and hair left in the bathroom, a smashed spider in the corner and cob webs throughout. Additionally, the balcony door lock was broken, so the balcony could not be opened at all, and the shower door bracket was also broken. We chose to stay since it was only one night and the bed appeared clean. I brought these issues up to Rachel at check-out, and her response was simply that they had "a list of housekeeping issues this morning," with no apology or concern expressed. Overall, the hotel staff did not feel very caring or welcoming, although the restaurant staff was very friendly. It was nice seeing the tennis matches going on, but the pool was quite cold, kids were filling the hot tub area to play so we stayed away. Would be cool to have an adult only hot tub. I'm sure when the outside ones are open and it's not as cold these are pretty nice. All in all, this stay did not provide the resort experience we were hoping for. We're currently staying at Grand Traverse Harbor Resort (March 24-28), and unfortunately, our experience started off on a very disappointing note. My family and I--my wife and three children--arrived after a 5-hour drive from Chicago, just one day after my wife had surgery. After that kind of travel, you expect a warm and professional welcome. That was not our experience. At check-in, there was no one at the front desk. When a staff member named Adriana arrived, there was no greeting, no eye contact, and the interaction felt dismissive and unwelcoming from the start. Even after we calmly tried to reset the tone, the experience did not improve. When we asked to speak with a manager, the situation remained uncomfortable and unresolved.she was even interrupting her manager johnny and said she didn't care if we gave a review. This was a surprising first impression for a resort of this caliber. We also couldn't ignore that we were the only Black family present at the time, which made the interaction feel even more concerning. I'm sharing this feedback in hopes that management will take a closer look and address it. We're still here for several days and would truly appreciate the opportunity for our experience to be turned around. Hoping someone from management reaches out during our stay. read more

This is my second stay at this resort. My recommendation is to have a rental car because you are 20-25 minutes away from downtown and all of the action. The resort is remote, and I also recommend you stay in the "Tower" as the rooms are larger and have views. However, on the whole, the resort needs a "Refresh" on rooms. New beds, linens, pillows, furniture, etc. The staff is very kind and helpful. read more

I've visited and stayed at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa several times over the years, and I've always had an exemplary experience. The rooms are comfortable and well-appointed (especially now following the renovations), there's a lot of great things to do on-site (and nearby), and the staff are excellent. Most recently I attended a work retreat on site, and enjoyed both the lodging and the conference rooms/meeting spaces (and the catering - which had the nice touch of including some locally-made products with the meals). One of the things I love about the resort is that it's close to downtown Traverse City without being *in* the city (which gets predicably busy with tourism in the summer months). Also - the accommodations at the resort are better than anywhere I've stayed in downtown TC. read more

So this was my first interaction at a hotel in Michigan. I've traveled far and paid for my stay here just to enjoy the Michigan experience. For such a lovely hotel I was appalled by the disrespect I witnessed. As I was hanging around in the reception, I witnessed an African American family being treated differently by the person at the front desk. Now I initially enjoyed my stay but this made this significantly worse as I was leaving. The woman working at the desk had absolutely no customer service skills and she was simply disrespectful and dehumanizing to the lovely family that just wanted to check in. The woman couldn't even hold eye contact with the family and treated them differently. Based on the interaction I observed I truly feel that it appears that people of color aren't welcome at this resort. It's really sad to see things like this in a world where theres already so much evil. The worker then began to escalate the situation while repeatedly stating her name which was "Adriana". She clearly doesn't know how to work with people and this resort needs to either fire Adriana or apologize to the African American family who paid for this expensive hotel. They didn't deserve this disrespect, they paid for a good time, not to be treated differently by an ignorant, uneducated, untrained worker. I not only blame "Adriana" but I blame those who hired her. Professionalism should be a priority in such a high quality hotel. I was disappointed and disgusted watching such an interaction and it made me feel obligated to write a review about such a distasteful experience. read more

I used to really enjoy this hotel. Now, while at a well attended conference, all the restaurants are closed early. All the stores closed. The one bar, with a 'late-night menu at 9pm was so crowded my party of six bailed before we could order food. Nice enough place but just not enjoyable when nothing to do. read more

Would never stay again. 1 BDRM Village CONDO was overpriced. The events are a seldom with no appeal. Arrival - we arrived hours after check in only to be told that no one knows if the room is ready and we have to wait for someone to go check. Gessh. During check in, questions are posed with incomplete answers. Opportunity to advise us and welcome us was lost. There seemed to be no interest in making our stay delightful. The condo was okay but the TV was so small for the distance to the couch. In today's cheap big screen tv's this is inexcusable. TV had no channel listing provided nor instructions on how to get out of the menu on the screen. The bedroom was the best room, comfortable bed and plenty of space. The shower area has one small rack to hold all the towels as if no one ever heard of a hook on the back of a door. The kitchenette had a sink and two burners (one knob kept falling off) with no area for the drying rack and toaster except using another piece of furniture (see pic). BTW, staff doesn't ensure that there are carts in the lobby so we have to manually lug our suitcases. I am not saying this should be the Ritz but for these prices more is expected. They, imo, gouged us on staying on July 4th. Normal room rate was $369, then it went to $387 on July 3 and then $549 on July 4th (are you kidding me) and there was nothing was special - no fireworks, special events). Add to that $40 in taxes and $20-$30 resort fee and the bundled cost is ridiculous. read more

2nd stay here for a conference after getting married here over a decade ago and while it seems many of the internal things have been visually updated, it does not feel like much has been done to improve the quality of food provided or value for staying at the hotel. Unless you are specifically staying here for golf or a conference (and even then i would prefer to stay elsewhere and only come for event when given the opportunity), I would recommend staying elsewhere. read more

I see this place has 2 1/2 stars on yelp and that seems about right even in heyday this place wasn't all that exciting. It's kind of sticks out like a sore thumb against the typical vibe that you expect to find in Northern Michigan. I don't like the location at all in frankly, if I'm not traveling up here for a conference, I'm not coming anywhere near this hotel. What bothered me this time a little bit was the staff generally seemed on, pleasant and not happy to be there. Walked into a couple couple of the clothing shops and were never even acknowledged by any of the employees manning the counters. And stopped at the shop for some ice cream. It was really grossed out when the attendant grabbed a cone with her bare hand after having been talking and texting on her phone without washing, yeah probably should've said something and asked her to remake it, but she was so. read more

I Booked a romantic spa weekend package for my partner and me on Valentine's Day. We drove 3+ hours through the snow. We got there and the place was overrun with children bouncing basketballs and running around like crazy. Apparently the hotel was hosting a large children's basketball tournament....on Valentine's Day weekend. Children in wet bathing suits and bare feet were running through the restaurant we were eating at on our first night. Children were stomping up and down our hallway yelling until midnight. We spent the next day at the spa which was located directly under, you guessed it, the basketball courts. The entire experience was marred by the clear sounds of shoes squeaking, basketballs bouncing, and buzzers buzzing. We could literally hear a parent arguing with a ref from the sauna. We had an issue with being double charged for our package and the reception staff was not keen on helping us, probably wanted us to scoot so they could accommodate the hockey tournament families that were arriving. I spoke to a vendor for a homeowners conference that was also there that weekend (but did not cause any kind of disturbance) and they told me that the resort has been hosting this tournament that weekend for years. The only reason I am giving two stars is because the staff at the spa, Niijii, and Aerie were wonderful. However, we will be spending next Valentine's Day somewhere that values their guests and honors the experience they advertise for "romantic weekend getaways" read more

The rooftop restaurant on property last minute cancelled our anniversary dinner 2 days before the reservation, weeks after booking and confirmation. The resort management initially claimed we were not cancelled so we did not fully research any other restaurants in town. The next day, resort management backtracked and confirmed we were in fact cancelled. They did reserve us a table at another company owned restaurant in the casino down the street (which we had to very quickly find online with no context about the venue) but they did not tell us how poor quality that restaurant is nor did they tell us it is a windowless pit that you approach through the slot machine floor on the casino, which really ruins the vibe for an anniversary dinner. The resort has made it clear they are not concerned about our terrible experience and has offered only the mildest possible remediation (1/2 off the TERRIBLE restaurant). The service, aside from the terrible anniversary management, was begrudging at best. The staff seemed to think they were doing us a favor by going to their bar and staying in their room. The resort itself is a mediocre property with very nice golf courses. The area is wonderful - stay in any one of the plentiful alternative options in the area rather than wasting money at this disappointment. read more

We stopped here on our way to Cheboygan Michigan from Chicago. It really wasn't on the way so my bad for booking it, but also looked like a fun resort for our boys to enjoy. Unfortunately, by the time we got there they only got an hour or so in the arcade (which they loved) before bedtime. And then we had to walk up early to pick up their sister at overnight camp. The hotel itself is ginormous, although we only saw a small part of it: a room (nothing special, but clean), the arcade (kids give it 2 thumbs up) and I grabbed a drink at the bar with a friend. The bartender was working hard with this lively crowd and within an hour of sitting down there was singing and dancing in the lobby. Fun crowd! The next morning we grabbed a coffee and breakfast in the marketplace although there really wasn't much to chose from in regards to food beyond stale bagels. Our room was over $300/night, but based on many other hotel experiences would say our room was worth about $150/night. I do want to come back to Traverse City at some point to explore and this is a fine place to stay, but I think there are probably nicer hotels that I would prefer in the area. Then again we aren't golfers and I've heard it's a great place for those who love to golf. read more

Don't stay here. I've heard rave reviews from people who stayed here 5 or more years ago. But the overall consensus of our group after our stay? Grand Traverse Resort gave up. Rooms do *not* have: amenities; microwaves, tubs, any sort of mini bar or snacks on option, room service, a smart TV (no streaming, and a movie rental is $19.99), fans in the bathrooms, housekeeping, reasonable access to the pool/hot tub, staffed concierge, staff. As others stated, there's definitely a staff shortage. But aside from inside the absolutely dead stores on the main floor, the only staff I saw our entire weekend was one very flustered front desk associate who informed us that if we would like a microwave in our room, we could rent one for $15 a night. The pool closed for the day at 8pm, and also was closed from 1pm to 4pm on weekdays. The one 15 minute trip we took down there for the hot tub, surprised us with: one pool completely drained, and the other absolutely *overrun* with kids. Of course they'd be swimming during what you'd think would be adult hours, since it was closed all afternoon. The lobby bar was closed for our entire stay. No one was at the concierge desk. The activities center (The Den?) was closed. There is no continental breakfast, and the coffee pods you'll receive in your room are not good, and will also not be replenished. (The coffee maker actually sprayed scalding hot water at me when I plugged it in, so that was weird) Our shower had a bulging plaster ceiling that was warped to the point that there was a hole above the shower head. I'm sure this is due to the fact that there is no fan or vent in the bathroom. Overall, it was a crappy stay, and I wouldn't spend even half of the nightly rate on this place if I were you. Its two redeeming qualities are the nice view and comfy beds. read more

We were in the older section. The first two days, which were very hot days, there was no air conditioning in the hallways. The upside was that we were closer to the pool, fitness center and spa. The air conditioning makes so much noise that it is overly loud. The rooms do not have fridges or microwaves. Room service is by request only. read more

My review is of the golf course by Jack Nicklaus the Bear Course. Was in town to support a friend in the Iron Man 70.3 in Frankfort and took the opportunity to play this local course. Layout of the course is a resort style condition with favorable fairways and large greens making it a fun outing. Played as a single and was paired with a group of retired veterans who were traveling and been wanting to play the course. Besides the weather being nice that day, the best part was hearing the stories of these 3 men who toured together in the service and remained friends for over 50 years! I couldn't have asked for a better group and after thanking them for their service we even shared a beer after the round, for which I made sure to pick up the tab for them! read more

Great location but impacted by poor managerial and front desk support. In addition, the resort had several features closed down and the rooms are becoming very dated. The Shores beach area no longer has an outdoor pool, beverage service, or food. We were not told this at the time of booking and it was a major letdown. Further, the indoor pool no longer has a functional water slide for the kids. Again, we were not made aware of this at booking or just prior to arrival. The most glaring issues though are manager and front desk support. We were locked out of our room 3 times (shores condos) for an extended period each time. The front desk offered little to no help, and failed to send someone with a key. We were required to drive back to the main desk, wait in line, get a key and drive back. 3 times this occurred. At one point we were locked outside of our room for 45 minutes. Beyond this it took multiple hours and multiple calls to get basic things like towels and pillows. When we asked to speak with a manager, each time the front desk claimed there was no manager onsite. I find this very hard to believe that for a full week no manager existed at the hotel. We used to really enjoy our stays here, but it's gone downhill. The resort needs new leadership. a remodel, and they need to get the Shores Beach area (once a crown jewel) figured out and improved. Despite all of these issues, we still managed to have a fun family trip. As I said above the location is beautiful. It is an absolute shame the resort ownership is letting it get so dated and rundown. Someone like Hyatt needs to buy this place and turn into the jewel of the area it can certainly become again. read more

Check in was extremely sad. We were literally the only people in line to check in and the front desk staff acted as though we were a bother. I asked about the mini manicure that was set up in the lobby and no one even greeted me even after I said hello. Train your staff to greet customers and guest and be kind. It doesn't take much to simply do your jobs. My husband and I have come here for the spa but in the future we will decide to go elsewhere. read more

This review is only covering the nail salon!! I went to get a manicure at the resort's spa a few days ago, and as much as I hate to say it, it was just a really bad manicure: 1. The nail tech used a body scrub on my hands and arms, but she left it all over my arms and I had to wash it off on my own later. 2. She cut my finger while trimming my cuticles. 3. She didn't use a base coat, and now my nails are stained yellow! 4. The manicure itself was just bad (see pictures). She didn't paint the sides of my nails, around my cuticle looks wonky, the polish color was still translucent and needed another coat. The lady who did my nails was very nice but she just didn't do a good job. And please note I didn't complain to anyone so I'm not sure how they would have remedied the situation. read more

A 4 star hotel with 2 star service. Great location and easy to get to. Lots to do in the area. Good looking grounds. I'd been here before for a conference. However there is zero housekeeping during your stay. No towel replacement , no trash removal and no linens changed regardless of how long you stay. This is unacceptable considering the price as well as how they represent themselves to the public as a leading "resort and spa destination ." When I saw towels had not been picked up I called front desk that stated housekeeping stopped after Covid started and if we want something to ask . Right... not coming back . A cheap motel would do better then that. In addition they charge a $20.95 daily resort fee on top of the nightly rate. So what are we paying this for if we get nothing other than a bed to sleep on ? read more

UPDATE: a manager responded to my message to the hotel shortly after this review was posted, thanking me for the feedback and stating that they'll address the issue with staff. I'll take him at his word, so I'm upgrading the review to 3 stars instead of 2. Overall a decent experience at the hotel. I was attending a conference. The old section that previous reviews had complained about has been renovated. No mold, stains, or decaying pieces. Why I give 2 stars, however, is because of the check-in experience. As an American of Asian descent, I occasionally encounter implicit bias and racism that assumes I'm a foreigner based solely on my outward appearance. The check-in clerk did this to me. While holding my ID in his hand, he asked me conversationally with a smile, "so where are you from?" I thought it was a trick question. I answered the city where I live (which is on my license). He looked confused, so I mentioned the major metropolitan area it's located. He snapped out of his daze and said, "oh, you're American!" He drew a conclusion based solely on how I looked. I sent a message to the hotel, suggesting they improve their staff training for implicit bias to avoid this sort of gaffe in the future. I got no response. While I don't want to get the staff member in trouble (and therefore didn't name him specifically in my message to the hotel), he and probably others therefore need more training & guidance lest he say something inappropriate in the future to someone with less patience and a lower threshold of tolerance. The only other service offered by the hotel that I used was the workout room. It was adequate. Mostly populated by machines and very, very limited in free-weights. Dumbbells only go up to 20 lbs. Kettlebells are mismatched. The water fountain has far too much pressure, and I ended up rinsing the wall a few times. read more

We had a great couples message. The spa is very nice. They have great amenities. You can use the pool and workout facilities. The workout room is small but had everything you need for a good workout. This isn't about the stay itself; I've stayed here before and it's just ok. Very overpriced for what you get (or don't get). The issue I have now is that I sent my boss off for a conference at GTR and paid for the deposit with our company credit card. He pays for the balance upon departure with his own credit card and then a few days later, on our company credit card, a charge of almost $700 appears and then a couple of days after that another charge of almost $350 appears. Boss did not make those charges. I call and email GTR several times over a week and no one will return my email or call. I left messages directly with the Julie, the accountant, who apparently just forwarded them to other people to handle who never called me back (confirmed by a GTR employee I spoke to) - not helpful whatsoever and very unprofessional imo. I called again and told them I must speak with a live person this time, I've left voicemails to wherever they transferred me (including Julie) and no one has called me back. Later that day, Rick the Resort Operations Controller, called me back. I told him what's going on and then send him my detailed back up information from the bank showing the charges, including dates, transaction numbers, the whole gambit. I didn't hear back from him after a couple of days so I emailed him to see if he had a chance to look over what I sent and crickets. No one ever got back to me about these fraudulent charges of approximately $1,000! They're supposed to be in the HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY for Pete's sake! It's over a month later and I'll dispute all the charges, but this could have been remedied very easily without wasting my time and efforts. Also, how did these charges get on our card when it was in my possession over 300 miles away at the time? Inside job, I'm guessing? I'm a polite person, friendly, patient, never raised my voice and was very appreciative when I thought someone was trying to help me remedy this. GTR is very unprofessional in the way they handle things, it's absurd. A lot of my time was wasted, and my company is out approximately $1,000 until my dispute is settled. read more
