This was my 3rd time at Granny Fishes. I always look forward to eating here when I'm in town visiting family. But something is changing and not for the better. Don't get me wrong, it's still down home fried catfish. And they have some of the best hush puppies you can find. But the quality of the fish, the declining service, and the uneven cooking is concerning. First off, you will have to wait to be seated. That is a given no matter what time you go. They are simply that popular. I expect that and have no problem with waiting. But don't seat my party and make us wait another 10-15 minutes to be acknowledged by the server. There is clearly not enough staff to handle the tables they have. I'd rather sit out front talking with friends and family than be sitting at a table being ignored. Once our server came and took our food and drink orders (she was really nice but obviously overwhelmed), she came back with all of the beverages but one iced tea. When we flagged her down, she apologized and said she'd be right back with it. She didn't return until our food was served. She apologized again about the missing tea and finally got it. The hush puppies were outstanding as always. But the fried catfish had an off taste. And she forgot one of the side dishes on three of our plates. I'm not sure if that was her fault or the kitchen but that doesn't make it right. My baked potato was not cooked through (yes, I had the baked potato instead of the standard fries, an odd choice I admit). The white beans were tasty but on the verge of mush, nothing like the saucy beans I'd had here previously. And our drinks sat empty for long periods of time before anyone noticed. This is a pretty good restaurant. I personally don't like catfish, but my friends say it's really good. Personally I love the burger and fries. The waiters are very friendly, and have shared that unfortunate the owner is trying to sell as she's getting up there in age. I really hope that if anybody buys it they keep the same great food and service. I'd recommend this little place tucked out of the way to anybody looking for a good meal. read more

I was definitely not expecting this to be as good as it was. Hush puppies were 10/10. My husband had the fried trout and whole catfish. He said 10/10 for sure. The service was great even though they were so busy. I had the grilled chicken (I'm not into seafood) and it came with 3 good size pieces of chicken. Arrived shortly after they open because last time we were there it was a very, very long wait. Got seated properly waitress came over quickly got our drink and food order brought our complementary hush puppies and then brought over our drinks. Was kind of a long wait for the food, but I will tell you this it's worth it, this place rocks the fish. I had the catfish and trout combo. My wife had chicken strips because she doesn't eat fish. The catfish too very big pieces very flavorful. The trout was good, but it wasn't as flavorful as the catfish wasn't particularly fond of vinegar based coleslaw, which had a lot of mustard in it. My wife had the mayonnaise based coleslaw, which was a little bland tasting but salt and pepper livens right up. The food was very, very good and I would absolutely recommend this place to anybody. The restaurant itself is extremely rustic and off the beaten path, the windows could use a good washing, but overall fits what they're trying to do there. Tucked away on the outskirts of Tullahoma, this gem is a must visit. Fantastic Hole-In-The-Wall - Great Frog Legs We found this restaurant on Yelp. We were staying in Manchester, TN, so it was a bit of a drive to find this place, but it was WELL worth it. Several times my husband commented, "Are you sure the GPS is taking us to the right place?" - the terrain was field fields fields, homes, and then BAM! The restaurant with a ton of vehicles. Plug the address into your GPS and you'll be fine. In our book, when there are a ton of vehicles surrounding the restaurant, that's a good sign!!! The hush puppies were great (never ending - they'll bring as many as you want). Ask for some of their homemade ranch to dip them in. My husband got the combo plate: fried catfish, fried frog legs, fried trout. He said the frog legs were the best he'd ever had and he wished he would have JUST gotten the frog legs. The sides he got (coleslaw and french fries) were just ok. I got grilled trout and grilled chicken with a side salad. The chicken and trout were great. My side (beans) was just ok. The highlight of our meal was dessert - YES, SAVE ROOM FOR FRIED PIE. I got the apricot and my husband got the peach. It was delicious. Today was our first time to eat at Granny's. I had heard about this place through friends, and it proved to be just as enjoyable as I expected. The restaurant is nestled back off the road in a very quiet and peaceful setting. It's basically a rustic restaurant that allows for a nice casual dinner. We arrived just after opening, which was a good thing! The place was packed within 15 minutes. If you're one of the unlucky ones to not get seated immediately, you will hear them yell across the room to "write your name on the list and we will seat you as soon as possible". I was really looking forward to eating here. However, they only accept CASH or CHECK! There are no signs stating this and it's not even on the menu. It must just be locally known. I first thought it was a joke. I mean, who carries cash these days let alone a personal check? The flavor had a slightly salty swamp after flavor but that is what made them awesome. Crispy, not greasy and YUM ! We sat but didn't wait long. They called us in this rustic place is basic, simple, the staff are delightful, kind and friendly! Quaint little fish house, but you can also get steak, burgers, chicken and of course frog legs on Thursdays. They open at 5 on Friday nights and we walked in at 5:05 and the place was packed and we had to wait about 50 minutes in a very comfortable waiting area. Felt like I was sitting on my grandma's couch waiting for her to say come and get it. Waitress was friendly and helpful, she brought out 4 huge huspuppies right away, I ordered the fish and chicken dinner and about 20 minutes later another waitress brought out our meals, minus my chicken which was about ten minutes late. Everything was good and hot, the fish was above average but my white beans needed some salt and the chicken was a bit bland. We left extremely filled and very satisfied. Would like to see a larger portion of beans and recommend more flavorful ingredients not just to the chicken but to their huspuppies as well. Don't get me wrong they were good but not the wow factor I've been used to or what I've been told they were. My biggest criticism is that the meals are served on paper plates, styrofoam cups and bowls, seems a bit cheap not to mention the unnecessary waste. Buy some real dishes and hire a dishwasher. If you want the wow factor at your next Catfish endeavor then visit the Catfish House in Clarksville, TN. They've never failed to impress my taste buds. Well when the wife has that look on her face, and she says " We are in a Tennessee and I want fried catfish ", well you find fried catfish . And find it I did . I looked up Granny Fishes when we were on 1-24 and would need to take a 35 minute detour one way. After eating here , I would take a hour 35 minute detour gladly to come here. Pulling up at night , I thought that the directions took me down the wrong road , however there was the building , lights and all the cars. I found it !!! What a charming building inside and out . Our waitress was friendly , charming, and helpful. We even had Granny come up and say hello. We each had the fried channel catfish dinner. It is two medium sized catfish fried in a light dusting of corn meal. It comes with hush puppies , choice of potato and slaw. I did the regular coke slaw and my wife did the vinegar slaw . It was so good we asked for some to go. Our waitress offered the homemade lemonade as a fill up to go for our trip. All in all , mission accomplished . Granny Fishes is a real hidden gem. The One Who Loves Kids And Dogs has lived in the area since 1980, and though Granny Fishes apparently opened in 1984, neither she nor her mother had heard of it before last month. We visited Granny Fishes with a group of 8, including kids and parents with a variety of likes and dislikes. And yet everyone came away from Granny Fishes satisfied. In fact I would call it one of the best meals I've ever had in Tennessee. I should have known what I was in for when I called earlier in the week to see if they take reservations (they don't). I then asked when they got busy and the kindly woman on the phone said, "Honey, we get busy the minute we open the door." No lie, that. They open at 4, and we arrived at 4:50 to find just one large table and two small ones not filled. The dining room, decorated with rustic artifacts and rough-hewn wood, is large, with room for perhaps 100 diners. The service left no one's needs unanswered, as our drinks were kept filled throughout the meal and everything arrived as ordered with no hiccups. Our server was a tall young lady with long, dark curly hair whose name I never got. The hush puppies come to your table as an appetizer, hot, fresh and homemade. They are delicious and not greasy. We also ordered some onion rings as an appetizer as well, though they appear on the menu as a side. I could have made a meal of the hush puppies and onion rings alone. The rings were spot-on, cut small and thin so they did not lose their breading. The menu is not particularly broad. The highlights are catfish and trout, farmed on site (yes, you read that right), and available fried or grilled. I ordered grilled trout, and it came with a homemade tartar sauce, but hardly needed it as it was seasoned and grilled with care. I tried another diner's fried catfish and found it light and fresh-tasting, and like the other fried items on our table, non-greasy with a delicate cornmeal breading. Both fish had that fresh taste you won't find at any but the highest priced restaurants in landlocked Tennessee that can fly in fresh catch daily. As others have said, portions are huge. They do have child portions on the menu for most items, though, and local intel tells me you should order one of these if you aren't totally ready to tie on a feed bag. Me and The One Who Loves Kids And Dogs split an entree and left fully satisfied. The kids all got hamburgers, topped with whatever they wanted, and all were delivered exactly as ordered. The quality of the burgers was above average, and everyone cleaned their plates. Other items available include shrimp, steaks, salads, grilled and fried chicken sandwiches and tenders, and fried appetizers/sides like jalapeno strips, jalapeno poppers and fried mushrooms. I'm probably forgetting a few things, but you get the picture. The meal wound up with dessert, which for our table consisted of fried apple and peach pies and some blackberry cobbler, all served with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream. Again, homemade and delicious. A couple of things you need to know if you go: they only take cash, no plastic. They also do not serve alcohol. You'll have to ask if you can BYO, as I forgot to ask. And it is WAY out in the boonies, past Wartrace and Normandy, almost to Tullahoma. read more
