My wife and I went here on a Saturday morning g around 1030. We entered the alley that leads to the hostess station and we were the only people in line. Three employees literally stood within three feet of us and never even looked at us, much less greet or seat us. Horrible customer relations. Overall, our experience was pleasant. We did not like walking in and smelling cigarette smoke and were amazed that smoking is still allowed in restaurants anywhere, but once we got to our tables, the smoke was no longer noticeable. Food was good, much like what we expected. My husband had chicken friend steak that he really enjoyed. I ate vegetable beef soup and a salad. The salad was mostly iceberg lettuce--nothing special--but the soup was delicious. We both really wanted to try a slice of pie but we were no longer hungry enough. Our server was sociable and good to check in and refill glasses. The ambiance was that of an old cafe. The room in which we ate seemed to be full of people who had come from church and many seemed to be regulars. We would go back if we were driving through Joplin again. read more

The homemade onion rings were AMAZING and the side salads with honey mustard were good and my mashed potatoes were delicious. The steaks were terrible and I didn't realize they would be boiled but my son liked his steak tips. My husband said the omelet was alright but he's had better. Overall we would all get different entrees because all the sides were fantastic. Honestly I could have gotten just a salad and onion rings and had a great meal! The food needs some work. It's all pre-packaged and microwave heated. The pie tastes like what you imagine a fake display pie would taste like; in other words, no flavor. Decided to try granny Schaefer's last night got there about 8:00 they closed at 8:30 p.m. . Not a very big crowd but one thing I was extremely surprised to see they actually still have a smoking section. The wait staff at cashiers were overly friendly really enjoyed the atmosphere. Ordered the spaghetti with garlic bread in the salad was quite impressed the garlic bread wasn't like a brick and the spaghetti had plenty of meat sauce and the salad was actually a well-dressed salad. They're blue cheese chunky dressing was exactly that and from what I understand very delicious. Chicken fried steak they offer an option for a couple dollars double the meat and it was a large portion of the chicken fried steak covered in a white country gravy. It was enough to make your mouth water. The mac and cheese well restaurant mac and cheese but it did taste like cheese. Mashed potatoes for homemade mashed potatoes the gravy the brown gravy was a little salty. They have a micro brewery where they grind their own coffee beans and I must say the coffee was extremely good, just could have been a little hotter they bring you a whole coffee pot to your table.My only complaint and I understand it was later in the evening but their homemade dinner rolls were a little hard on the bottom where they had sent in a warmer too long but they actually give you real butter. They also have a very large selection of homemade pies got one to take home but haven't tried it yet but it is a huge slice of peanut butter chiffon pie. read more

Sadly I would give negative stars if it were possible. This is the worst food I have ever been served in any restaurant hands down. Their "homemade" pies are absolutely not homemade. They are industrial strength, fake ingredient, pies with some kind of fake chemical whipped topping that would probably outlast the apocalypse. They are definitely mass produced somewhere else and are horrid. I do not believe any of their food is actually made in house. The servers are awesome and friendly. Classic diner with some of the best pies - the lemon meringue is *chef kiss*. I came for Sunday brunch and it was not super busy, though there is a lot of space for when the rush comes. Thought we'd give Granny Shaffer's a try. I know it's a local "diner casual" restaurant with "home cooking." There are a lot of good reviews. We walked in and the average customer age was 70 and I thought this was initially a good sign. Nope. Good service but POOR food and it was $42 for lunch! (Pepsi $3.50, chicken fried steak $14, sandwich $15, and a piece of pie $3, tax + $5 tip.) The Club sandwich was cold dark toast, 2 pc deli rolled turkey, limp cold bacon, and a couple of pieces of ham. The chicken fried steak was mediocre, the rubbery cold breading fell off, and the gravy was white paste. The instant potatoes were inedible and the green beans were cooked with vinegar. The take-home pie was so bad, my husband threw it away. He loves pie. I can't believe we blew forty bucks on this. Horrible. We won't be going back for $40 inedible lunches. I'm not being "snobby", I grew up HERE! The onion rings looked homemade (other plates) and I heard the catfish was pretty good. I guess you have to know what to order. You may be safe with breakfast. This is a great little coffee shop/ diner place. Here's the good and the bad: The bad: it does have a smoking section. Haven't seen one of those for probably 25 years lol They have it in a separate room but when you walk in, that smell is still there, in the common areas. My husband has asthma and I'm super allergic to smoke, so that was a little hard for us, and not something we expected. That odor just stings my eyes and it was noticeable the minute we entered. The good: we had an awesome waiter. He was amazing actually. We wanted for nothing. And even though it was fairly crowded, our food came lightning fast. It's typical diner fare food. I had a grilled sandwich with fries and my husband got their breakfast burrito. Both were great. Not fancy, just good basic good. My fried were seasoned so that was a nice touch. Restaurant seems to have a steady stream of older people. But we also saw young families. It has a nice casual comfortable vibe and reasonable prices. If you can handle the smoke part I mentioned, go and check it out. If you're hugely allergic or have respiring issues from cigarette smoke, you might want to pass. read more

They announced they were raising menu prices due to the minimum wage increase, while it appears to be for personal greed. Raising prices is not the answer. First time try and perfect meals for family. Lovely pie and cinnamon rolls it is worth it to come back to eat.

This has been a long standing staple for decades. But, it has gone so far down hill it makes me sad. First, you walk in and you are blasted with a face full of cigarette smoke as they still have a smoking section that obviously is not ventilated well. I had a good size headache coming on before even leaving the restaurant and now get to go use my inhaler. The food (veggies/fruit) is mainly taken right from a can. I've always enjoyed their catfish but got something different tonight-their pork chop dinner- and it tasted like it was prepared an hour or two ago and just wrapped in a warming tray as the breading was not crispy and was sweating and mushy. Then our waitress' service was far and few between. She asked if we needed anything and my husband said a refill on water. She proceeded to fill his and no one else's at the table nor did she ask. So basically I told my husband unless I'm really hungry for some catfish, we can completely mark this restaurant off our list from here on out. Which is sad for me to do because I like supporting the mom and pop places especially when they've been around for so long. But it's time for an overhaul, Granny. read more

Great place for breakfast if you can get past the strong tobacco smoke smell which is evident as you approach the front door. I had a sweet roll and it was one of the best sweet rolls I have ever had! Truly yummy! I had the spinach and mushroom omelette with real Hashbrowns, delicious!
