Nothing is ever the same twice. All of a sudden the greens are sweet now. The dressing has a sweetness now too. Fried chicken was made on the spot cuz they ran out so I think they forgot to season it. The cornbread wasn't mixed well before baking...I still liked it though cuz they tasted like the corn fritter things from el Torito. Mac was alright. It's usually baked but it was like they stirred it served it. It's kind that he hires people in desperate need of work but it would be best if they actually had kitchen & cooking & customer service experience. I've been going here for the past four years and the price point is good there food is consistent overall but there has been a couple of times where I've gone and things were a little different. Mac, cabbage, yams, fried chicken & turkey wing are my faves. The disadvantage is that since Covid they have no place for you to sit in the restaurant so you have to order and leave. The service I would give it 8 out of 10 particular people have better service than others here. Red snapper was too hard and Dry.... The pork chops were very small and tough, ended up chewing and spitting out a good amount. Chops were Supposed to be smothered, but only gravy was drizzled on top..... Rice in both meals was undercooked and tasteless. Also very stingy with the gravy on the rice. Well I finally made my way over to the place, after hearing all the hype. Quite frankly not sure why there is a big fuss cause I was disappointed. As you can see in the picture everything was dry and truly not what I expected. The pork chop was so salty I could not even finish it, the yams were so sweet I could not finish them, the stuffing was sweet and did not even taste or look like stuffing, the Mac n cheese was missing the cheese and the muffin was dry. I can't say I was even impressed with the presentation of other items but I can say that was my first and last visit. Been coming to the soul food place for a couple years now with no problems. But lately their customer service has been horrible and when I as a customer have a complaint about the customer service they always make the customers seem like they're the one who is wrong. This horrible service has happen more than once. The food is tasty so this isn't an issue. The issues for me are, lack of organization with the front end workers they hire. They have been through many workers. This day was no different with another worker they've hired. I made a complaint to the owner directly, then i was asked to leave and told by the owner to his front end worker " don't serve her" "put that back". Asked the owner why not train the worker to be more professional as customers don't know what selections of vegetable side are offered or not. The owner replied "you're reaching"! Hmm. Nevertheless, this is minor to me. The issue with Granny's Kitchen is the poor customer service. So much for supporting a black owned food place located in the south east of Los Angeles. Black owned has a stigma of providing horrible customer service. This black owned business is no different unfortunately. This is inappropriate behavior as business owners. I forgot to take pictures but this place is bomb. It's the food your granny used make. We got four dinners and a peach cobbler. Mac n cheese, fire, greens-fire, meatloaf, fire , neckbones also fire. Everything was good except the corn muffins which were burnt on the bottom but the tops were pretty good. I was in the area and I wanted to try th place for a Sunday dinner. So unprofessional, as I patiently waited in line to order my food a guy comes in and one of the ladies went straight to his service as if I wasn't standing there. You won't find any stock being used, according to Eric Lewis, they make every individual meat with its own seasoning, from ribs, to meatloaf, fried chicken, oxtail and more, you really can't go wrong with any selection! The oxtail is incredible! Very savory, the meat is so tender it falls off the bone. The fried chicken is juicy, golden brown and crispy! I wasn't able to get photos because I was hungry but I just moved to LA from Atlanta and was having a VERY hard time finding a good soul food place. We just do it different down south. I've been to the more popular soul food restaurant here and did not like it at all. The owners are from Arkansas and not from here so I was pretty excited about that. Lol Soul food restaurants here tend to have good meat and not so good sides. Granny's kitchen has both good meat and sides. I got the Woman's feast which included two meats, three sides and two cornbread muffins for like $19.99. The meats I got were fried chicken and neck bones and those were great! My sides were black eyed peas, Mac and cheese, and cabbage . I will admit the the sides were a bit salty (hence the four stars instead of five) but still edible. Firstly.. Lets just say that the parking is really, really tight here. You may have better luck at the supermarket lot next door, like i did. Just be careful not to take too long, or people might get angry. Aside from that, I made sure to get there ten minutes before opening, and by then there was already a line formed. I wasn't bothered at all by this, and actually felt encouraged, because that meant the food had to be awesome. I even had a good time waiting, chatting with a bunch of the ladies there and asking what was good. When I told them i was there for the chitlins, I definitely got some looks. But I figured that was a general reputation for when they aren't cleaned right, because mine had no smell. My main reason for wanting to try this place out was because i wanted to compare my chitins to someone with an authority on them. Someone with experience and know-how. When they finally opened about ten minutes past the time listed on the door, the line moved swiftly enough. They offered hand sanitizer at a small table inside while you wait. It was fun trying to read all the scribbles and names on the walls. I thought it was charming, and got really excited to see THE Granny in the kitchen.. The one who's face is on the sign and menu. If felt like i was seeing a celebrity. A no nonsense looking kinda lady, shaking spices and hotsauce over a big hotel pan in the back. Its exactly what I had hoped to see. And the staff was really pleasant. A tall gentleman in an apron cut the chitlins right over the pot as he was getting ready to serve them. Details that honestly made me happy to see. And the lovely woman who took my payment and bagged up my order was really nice as well. She seemed happy that i wanted to try the peach cobbler, but didnt mind that I turned down the offer of kool-aid that came with the lunch special. To reiterate what i had ordered, in total: Chitlins, Greens, Mac N Chz, and the Peach cobbler. It also came with a cornbread muffin. So.. Let me start off by saying that I really wanted to like this place. I drove all the way from OC/HB area because I wanted to try soul food done right.. At least, what i thought that meant. And Im sorry to say I feel pretty let down. The mac was overcooked, the greens were mushy and watery, the cornbread was dry, and the chitlins stank to high heaven. I was only able to get two bites in while holding my nose before i gave up. The taste itself was.. Almost okay, if not overbearingly over-seasoned in an attempt to cover up the smell. Even if it wasnt what i thought it was going to be, i definitely still learned the dark side of chitlins. Chitlins can be bomb, but this aint it. I did finish the mac n cheese (who wouldnt?), but the only thing I really enjoyed was the peach cobbler. The crust was tasty and the peaches were sweet. When I pulled up to Granny's Kitchen for the first time, after driving from Orange County, and saw the picture of Granny.... I already knew. All the food looked fresh, smelled fresh, and was fresh. I came on a mission specifically for some catfish. But I ended up also getting dressing, cranberry sauce, greens, macaroni, yams, and sweet corn, corn bread, and some perfect purple Kool-aid. Everything. Was. Amazing. There's no real soul food places in Orange County. With the food being as good as it was the drive was well worth it. Besides the food, my experience would not have been what it was without the chef Tria. Fantastic customer service! Her wonderful personality is contagious and she is so funny and fun to talk to!!! Dear god I can't believe I forgot to update this. I had come back on another occasion for the fried catfish and I believe that the meal alone taught me the true meaning of a food coma (something I thought could only happen on Thanksgiving).
