o9.15.18 I was here yesterday to grab lunch with my birthday girlfriend. She requested it so nothing fancy but very cozy and friendly. The taste of the food and price were very friendly too! This was my first time trying southern soul food so I just let my friends pick since I wouldn't know where to start. The staff (or maybe owner? I didn't get into detail) recommended the meat loaf and it was indeed very good. We also got the popular pork neckbone and fried chickens. All the sides were also very tasty, except for the sweet yam, wasn't really my thing bc it was too sweet hahaha Service was very good and the place is clean. Parking may be a pain in the bu7t so if you're lucky like us, there might just be an empty spot waiting for you bc it's a small lot with other shops in the little plaza. I wouldn't mind going back at all but wouldn't go by myself. Go with a group of ppl so you can try different things! Yumm read more

The food is fantastic, their customer service is terrible. I ordered delivery here before and for some reason the order took a very long time. The driver had to sit and wait for my order for awhile. I didn't care as long as the food showed up. I tried ordering there again today and after waiting 20 minutes longer than expected, they just cancelled my order. They didn't have the decency to call or use the app to adjust the order or anything, they just cancelled it. LATE. My diabetic brother has been waiting almost an hour to eat and now I have to order from somewhere else? I've worked at a restaurant with many app orders so I know what they can and cannot do for a customer. I REALLY loved the food here, but if this is how Granny's treats customers just because they have to use an app, then I won't be ordering from here anymore. Extremely disappointed. read more

I have definitely had better, but this place works, as there is no other soul food nearby. Its in a dinky shopping center in a dinky space that makes you not want to eat the food. I tried it because of you, Yelpers. 8 bucks got me one pork chop, delicious yams, and rice and gravy--(and a 12oz drink: Kool Aid, lemonade, or sweet tea). Notice the only thing I said was delicious were the yams. It'll do, but not worth going back. read more

I went in to buy some food. The owner didn't have a mask on. I wasn't wearing a mask either. He asked me to put on a mask. I asked him why did I have to wear a mask you were not? He then told me to leave the store. Very rude!!! read more

I love Granny's. I really do! But please get better packaging. Every single time I order delivery, I'm met with a bag full of food and juice. The lowest quality Styrofoam doesn't work with heavy, juicy soul food. Oh, and most customers don't want hard, burnt, inedible muffins . I'm still giving this black business 5 stars because my veggie plate is always (most of the time) great! But stall us out on stuffing all our items in one cheap Styrofoam please. read more

"Meh" is the perfect way to describe my Granny's Kitchen experience ... and I was really looking forward to it, which it made it all the more disappointing. I ordered the brickloaf over ... whoops. I meant, meatloaf ... over dried rice. I mean, a bruh couldn't get one coat of gravy over that bad boy? Sauce? Something ...? The chicken wings I had weren't crispy enough and the greens were ... well ... meh. And we all know that when it comes to soul food, mac-n-cheese is everything. Again ... it wasn't anything special. A step above Kraft ... and adding pepper only helped. On top of everything else, the delivery driver spilled our two drinks and my friend who ordered didn't wanna wait on a two drink re-delivery. I ordered the Mac and cheese, French fries, yams, cornbread and greens via uber eats. Everything but the French fries were horrible. The greens taste like they had a vinegar and sugar in them. The yams was salty ( never have I ever) the mac and cheese was dry and the cornbread was dry. read more

The chitterlings were $45.99 and it was a mediocre portion size. The chitterlings also tasted bland and watery. The cabbage was over salted and mushy. The Mac and cheese was over salted. The green beans were also over salted and mushy. The black eyed peas were good though. I wish these soul food restaurant employees would go to culinary school of some kind. It's disrespectful to the culture at this point to serve this. The bill for two dinners was $83.00 dollars and it wasn't good. R&R in Carson is the only soul food restaurant I can support in LA. read more

For 32 dollars worth of food, I could've gone down the street to "wingstop" @ least my meat would've been fresh. They got over on me and gave me old, twice fried chicken and fish. This is my second time visiting and it took me over 3 years to return, so I guess there won't be a third. I thought the purpose of a business was to get repeat customers. read more

I had Granny's this weekend. It's good not great. Baked chicken was good. Meatloaf was also tasty. I really liked the yams. The cornbread was sweet like I like it. The Mac n cheese left me wanting more cheesiness and the greens were far to sweet and vinegary. All in all if I'm in the area I would return. Parking is tight, but I appreciate that they are only letting 2 parties at a time into the small storefront and they make you sanitize your hands when you enter. read more

I was lucky enough to stop by Granny's this past weekend, and I can't wait to come back. I love soul food establishments, and in SoCal, if you're craving it, you gotta be willing to drive to LA. Granny's Kitchen is in a bit of a different location from other notorious spots in LA, such as Dulan's, and is instead located just north of Huntington park. The spot might be a little intimidating to some, but the food is so worth it. I called in over the phone on my drive to the restaurant, only to find out that they did not take phone orders (this was confusing to me since I saw multiple people picking up "online orders" and was even asked when I walked in if I had ordered over the phone). Upon walking into the establishment, they require a mask and sanitation regardless of the mask mandate being lifted in LA. I was greeted by two incredibly hospitable and friendly women, who seemed to be the family behind the restaurant. I ordered the "Hungry Woman Special" which comes with two types of meat, your choice of 3 sides, and two cornbread muffins. I went ahead and got the fried chicken and the BBQ Porkchop, as well as collards, black eye peas, and cornbread dressing. I also ordered an ala carte yam, cabbage, and gravy on the side. They have a cafeteria-style array of options already made, so some sides were not to be seen; therefore, I don't believe they had them at the moment. However, meats like fried chicken were made to order, so I was told to wait outside while they fried it in the back. The price came out to 32 dollars before the tip, with tax included. I received my cherished ensemble of food about 20 minutes later, and could not wait to dig into it as I drove home. Unfortunately, they forgot the side of cabbage I had ordered, and the ala carte sides were much smaller than the sides that came with the combo plate; nevertheless, it wasn't a big deal. All the food remained fresh and warm, even the chicken still being crispy. Ok first the meats, they were fantastic. The pork chop was juicy and tender, with not an overbearing amount of sweetness. The chicken, which was obviously fresh, had a delicious seasoning and was well above basic. As sides go, these collectively were good, not great, but the collards were some of the best I've had. Of course, everything was smothered in the warm, salty, and heartwarming gravy, and all the remains were mopped up with some of the best cornbread I've ever had. I highly recommend coming to Granny's and supporting this family establishment. Coming here transported me back home to Georgia, and I cannot wait to relive that experience again. read more

I worked at a school nearby and one of my students told me about this spot. I'm so happy I listened. My favorite things are the oxtails, turkey wings and baked chicken. The greens are a little sweet, but still tasty, so if you are being mindful of your sugar intake, I suggest you go for the green beans, which are also really good. Good portions, great taste and EXCELLENT customer service. read more

My God! Their food is soooo delicious. I woke up craving oxtails (I'm currently 32 weeks pregnant) and granny's kitchen is about 6 min from my house so I figured why not. I ordered thru Uber and got their lunch special which was the oxtail plate w 2 sides and I picked their Mac and cheese and rice w gravy their kool aid of the day and their homemade peach cobbler for dessert. When I tell you they did not disappoint!! First of all when uber dropped off the food and I was waiting for the driver to take his pic, I could already smell the food. I grab the bag from my porch and it was heavy! I bring it inside and open it up and mannnnn! The smell was amazing, and as soon as I took my first bite of the oxtail I was in love! Huge pieces of oxtails! Big portions! Mac and cheese was very creamy and cheesy. The rice was amazing. Everything was very well seasoned and their kool aid is bomb!! Their cornbread was delicious! I really can't say enough about this place and I'm glad I ordered from them! I definitely recommend it and I will for sure order from them again!! read more

I drove from Ontario to try their food. Yelp and Google says they are open. They aren't!! The lights are on inside. No one answered and their voicemail is full. The hours are from 11am to 6pm. It's currently 1:47pm and they haven't opened. Waste of time and gas. $6/gallon hits hard when a business can't even stick to their own schedule. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED. read more

This is likely one of the last authentic soul food restaurants in LA. There's just something about being squished in an overcrowded, body heat warmed, smells like grandma's kitchen restaurant. After driving around Downtown Los Angeles on a mission to rescue my friend's cell phone, ID and Debit card, we found ourselves tired and hungry. On a whim I decided to look up some recommendations from the web, and there were a ton of comments about Soul Food and it's popularity. Searching on yelp, I found Granny's Kitchen, having a great reputation and most feedback from enthusiastic locals. Upon arriving I was greeted by the owner, who was friendly and we exchanged conversation about our genuine curiosity for a great home cooked meal. He invited us inside and the rest was history! After we sat down and started eating, one of the other customers mentioned she had a rough day and that coming to Granny's was the highlight of her day. You can't make stuff like this up! I highly recommend the fried chicken and the cornbread was nice and moist! Next time I find myself in this area (I frequent Little Tokyo and Dt a lot) I'm bringing a friend! If you are from the south and know good soul food DONT EAT HERE!!! If a this is granny best she need to stick to needle point. Catfish poorly battered and unseasoned. Cornbread dry and hard. Corn sweet but extra sweet like they adding sugar to fool you. Greens are good that's all. Please don't waste your time or money. Disgusting read more

Food is ok the owner was cool but i waited about 30mins for them to take my order which i understood because they had online orders to make...but when they did get to me the plate look like it was made for my 8 yr old they charge $30 for some oxtails then i get to the cashier hand her my money then she say we dont take hundreds...that made me lose my patients because first theres no sign that says they dont take 100s so now i had to go to my car for my card which was across the street on central and if u know central its ALWAYS busy on that street...not only that i told the sorry cashier they need a sign or something to say she gone just say here u go and hand me my food...no thank you have a good day come back again just a here you go and nxt...trash customer service equals a lost customer... read more

The yams were dry and tough as they were not candied at all! My guests barely touched it. Maybe the dinners are still okay but I definitely don't recommend their catering trays. At 1:21 1 hr later I got my food, and to my disappointment when I got home the food was not good the yams i don't even have words for, the greens no seasoning and a lil under cooked, the succotash the okra not cooked well again no seasoning and a lot of end pieces, the black eyed peas no seasoning very bland, the cornbread was very thick. So sad the state this restaurant is in, they need to revamp too much going on door dash orders, online orders, dine in and orders at the window. So with that said this will be my last time going back to this restaurant.

That said, the food itself didn't quite measure up to the soul food restaurants I've enjoyed in Los Angeles and the surrounding areas. Soul food is a competitive niche, and there are some outstanding establishments in Southern California that set a very high standard. I ordered the Hungry Women meal using GrubHub and my experience with Granny's Kitchen was the worst. This is the absolute worst soul food I ever had everything was overly sweet, burnt and salty.. Meatloaf: was pink in the middle burnt and salty it tasted like some sort of canned potted meat.. yuck Yams: was slimy and way too much sugar Greens/cabbage: was ok but salty and sweet not a good combo Rice/gravy: the rice was undercooked and the gravy was way too watery and salty tasted like Campbell can gravy. Cornbread dressing: was so disgusting it had way to much salt and gravy it tasted like a wet sock Cornbread muffin: was basically jiffy brand dry and plain taste artificial as well Sweet tea: was tooooo sweeet if it was any sweeter you will go into a sugar attack I actually ordered the lemonade but they sent sweet tea instead Banana pudding: was so nasty it tasted so artificial the pudding was basically a snack pudding with 99cent vanilla wafers with 3 banana slices what a joke... I was here yesterday to grab lunch with my girlfriend. She requested it so nothing fancy but very cozy and friendly. The taste of the food and price were very friendly too. This was my first time trying Southern soul food so i just let my friends pick since i wouldn't know where to start. The staff (or maybe owner?) i didn't get into deail0 recommended the meat loaf and it was indeed very good. We also got the popular pork neckbone and fried chickens. All the sides were also very tasty, except for the sweet yam, wasn't really my thing bc it was too sweet hahaha. Went in there today with my friends and they were really nice and welcoming. We drove 40 minutes to get there and it was honestly worth it. The food is so good, and it was our first time trying soul food. I fell inlove! I had the chicken and waffles with mash potatoes and some mac and cheese. I think the chicken was made just right, i really liked that they make your chicken to order! Also the gravy was just perfect. I did think the lemonade was quite sweet for my taste but it was still good. I enjoyed the fact it is a real small joint but worth it. I pass by this place at least 4 times a day (no lie going back and forth to work) and I decided to stop in today for some lunch. Once you walk in all you smell is seasoning which is a plus. I came in for the oxtails but it's Thursday only. So I got the Turkey Neck Bones, MAC n Cheese and Yams. Let me just tell you every single bite of it was AMAZING!! The men at our church, Saints Tabernacle Church of God in Christ had our women's day brunch catered from this restaurant and the food was amazing! The greens were screaming at me and the macaroni and cheese was yelling just as loud. The fried chicken was extra crispy and not burned. My family will be visiting them again very soon . I overlooked it because I enjoyed the restaurant and kept giving them another chance. Today, I asked for dark meat, and I was told that on Sundays they don't let customers choose between dark and white meat. If I'm paying for my meal, I should be able to get the piece of chicken I want, especially when I'm a paying customer. The explanation I was given made no sense and came across as dismissive rather than helpful. I've tolerated inconsistent food quality and poor customer service for years, but this experience was enough. I won't be coming back, and I can't recommend this restaurant to anyone else. Customer loyalty should matter, and unfortunately, it didn't feel like it mattered here.
