I live in Carson, so driving out to Lakewood and getting it fixed the same day was such a relief. This guitar isn't for professional use--it's for my daughter who's just starting to learn--so having it ready right away saved me a lot of time and hassle. He even tuned it by ear in seconds, which was really impressive. Overall, a smooth and pleasant experience. With a musical background myself and experience working at an instrument store during college, I was genuinely impressed. I enrolled my daughter for lessons right away. Not only did she help me with this, she also helped me tune my violin and, noticing the bridge was crooked, put it back in place. When I offered to pay, she said it was for free. Angela knew right away what was wrong and not only did she do the repairs, she oiled and fixed a few little other things she noticed. I highly recommend her, especially if you are an amateur and need a quick fix. Some of the other places only do pro repairs so it's great that Angela was willing to take a look at a student clarinet and repair it. It was completely worth the hour drive!

I've had plenty of basic setups before, but this felt like a whole different level of attention and care. He walked me through what makes his Rockstar Setup different and you can tell it's not just a quick adjustment, it's a full dial-in of the instrument. When I got my guitar back it played incredibly smooth, stayed in tune better, and just felt more responsive overall. Anything and everything that could be oiled or lubricated was taken care of. The amount of work and detail that goes into the rockstar set up actually takes a few days and I guess depending on the condition of your guitar the longer it takes. My guitar had a lot of rust on the bridge and tuning keys. One of the saddles was even frozen in place and I couldn't get the string out. Steve took care of it. I didn't even notice how bad the condition of the guitar was in until I saw all of the photos Steve took. (Before and after). Who does that? It's hard to describe, but it actually made me want to pick it up and play more. Everything felt tighter and more precise without sacrificing comfort. The smell of the oil on the bridge and the lemon oil on the neck actually smell good too! You can tell Steve takes pride in going beyond the standard setup and really bringing out the best in the guitar. If you're on the fence about upgrading from a regular setup I'd definitely recommend going for it. I'll be sticking with the Rockstar Setup from now on.

Steve was super nice and easy to talk to which made the whole experience smooth from start to finish. My boyfriend had P90s installed in his Les Paul and needed it back in time for a gig, and Steve delivered! On my BC Rich he dialed everything in perfectly the intonation is spot on! the action feels just right, and the neck adjustment made a huge difference in how it plays. It's not easy to find someone who works this fast and still pays attention to all the details, but Steve definitely does. I wouldn't hesitate to bring any of our guitars back to him, we live in Long Beach and his shop is so close to us another plus!

There's a reason Joel Grant at Grant Guitars gets such high ratings...his guitar tech work is impeccable. It starts with how friendly and knowledgeable he is, and is followed by how honest he is. I brought in a Chibson, and within seconds he knew it was a copy (OK, not that big of a deal, but it was quick). The guitar needed a good setup, and that's exactly what he did. This baby plays like the real thing, great feel and action, and is 100% better than when I brought it in. I will say this...you need to be patient. Good work isn't fast, and you may need to wait a couple of weeks for your guitar to be done, but it's worth it. I think the other thing that was a nice surprise is that the strings that I bought were good strings but well below retail, and he didn't charge extra to put them on. I'm bringing all my guitars here, including two project guitars to have new pickups and machine tuners put on. I've been around a lot of guitar guys (been playing for over 20 years), and this guy LOVES what he does...unlike many who are just in it for the money (ahem...certain CENTERS that sell GUITARS). And just like everyone else has stated, the rates are very reasonable. Again, you aren't gonna get them done in a week, but it's worth the wait. read more

Joel Grant is a wizard. He has a lot of experience as a luthier, and a fantastic one at that, although I am not sure if he still is willing to do custom builds, but the man has made the most amazing necks I've ever felt and played. You name it, he can do it, from luthier/repair work to electronics. Whats more, he is the most down to earth and friendly, and most importantly, professional type of person that you can ever hope to do business with. And he doesn't bullshit you. I highly highly recommend his work! Consider yourself lucky if he's your guitar tech, cause this guy is a full on, bonafide, wizard luthier! read more

I've met and used the services of a bunch of guitar craftsmen/luthiers over the years, and Joel Grant is definitely at the top of the heap. He knows what he is talking about as evidenced by the great results. He explains things well, so that I know what was actually done to the guitar. His work is, as others have said, impeccable. And his prices are fair. He is very busy because he does great work, and his estimates of when you can expect your guitar back are generally spot on. read more

Joel Grant has worked on many of my guitars, electric, acoustic, electronics, setups and general repairs.. In my experience, he is the most knowledgeable and creative luthier in the County if not all of Southern California. fair prices, and the highest quality work, as well as honesty and practical advice about what works and does not for both the Hobbyist and Performing musician. I can't recommend Joel and Grant's Guitars more highly. Simply the best. read more

Joel has been doing excellent work for me since 1984 (when he was in La Habra.) Always excellent work, no matter what I throw at him and believe me, I've given him complex and challenging work.
