I'm always looking for a shop that knows how to pull an espresso shot. And let me tell you, it isn't easy. Most shops don't care about espresso cause they dump a bunch of milk and sugar over it, and gladly charge you for it, both parties being none the wiser.... So when I come across a shop that actually cares about their grind, time and temperature, trying to hit that perfect balance of oils and roast. I get excited and go as often as possible. The crew at Grapes and Grinds repeatedly made perfect espresso's the week of sturgis. A very hard time to regulate, both grind and espresso machine. This is an excellent place place for coffee, internet with multiple outlets, free wine tastings, and gelato. Not a place for a big meal, but definitely stop by for a treat or coffee. Pros: gluten free, dairy free options; internet; gelato and coffee; comfortable and quiet; good background music. Cons: no real protein on the menu. The smoothies are fruit juice blended with ice, so they don't use protein powder or soy milk. I think having a more substantial smoothie option would make this place five stars! read more

We kept hearing about this place in the various review sites while looking up what to do around Mt. Rushmore. So many rave reviews but little substance, it's just a quaint little coffee shop and it's probably out of the way too right? We almost passed it up. But, we made a little touristy stop at the presidential wax museum and guess what they own the place and it was literally just across the parking lot. The service here is very friendly, they have WiFi, it's not amazing wifi, but seeing as how terrible getting wifi or even data in the rest of South Dakota (besides a major town like Rapid City) even the slow speeds were a needed a respite. There's water if you're thirsty, which we were because it was an unbearable 95°, don't expect tap. They get a cup of ice and fill it with boiling hot water. Still works for me though. They also have free wine tasting, so you can finally try that Red Ass Rhubarb wine every store and restaurant wants to sell by the bottle but not let you try a glass. Watch out that their bottles may feature different prices for the same size and type of wine, but they'll honor the lower price if you find one. We had the gelato and the strawberry gelato was most strawberriest gelato you could ever have. It was like biting into frozen strawberries that were soft enough to scoop and eat. Coffee in the morning, gelato for an afternoon snack, and wine (for the adults) at night while the kids played giant chess, Cornhole, or climbed on the play set. Coffee is extremely burnt and has bad aftertaste. If you ask for sugar in your coffee they charge you for it. Girl at register told the other employee to use liquid sugar instead of real sugar so that she could charge us. Very odd. Coffee tastes gross. read more
