We came to Grassy Creek a couple of weeks ago to hike and then try some wine. The hike to Carter Falls and back is a 4 mile hike - not strenuous and it was a fun adventure to a beautiful waterfall. By the time we were done hiking, the winery had just opened and was already starting to get busy - it was a beautiful but chilly afternoon. As we had our dog with us, my husband went in to get our wine flight. We are traditionally a sweet wine fans - they have more dry wines than sweet, but my husband mentioned the gentleman helping him select wines was absolutely fantastic and helpful. Since they were out of one of their sweet wines, he suggested that once we finish 4 of our wines, to come back and get a refill for our 5th wine in our flight - that way we are not having one of the dry ones that we knew we wouldn't like. My favorite was the perfect pear! Nicely sweet and easy to drink with fantastic flavor. Overall, loved our experience from the hike to the wine sampling. Beautiful grounds at the winery as well. We are extremely happy we found this hidden gem. It's only 1hour 15 minutes away from Charlotte! There was wine for everyone, red, white, sweet and dry! We tried different local cheeses and crackers and created our own charcuterie board. There was live music and other local artists selling their craft. The winery has access to some trails around Elkin. We hiked to Carter Falls, which ended up being a 5 mile in and out hike through beautiful nature! We saw cows, Tobacco fields, Halloween decorated trees and an amazing waterfall. If you are looking for a day trip from Charlotte, this is the place to be! read more

What a lovely place! You can come for a visit and sit and enjoy a bottle or you can hike on their surrounding trails and then enjoy a bottle afterwards. Staff were friendly. They had some tables inside and some tables outside so you could enjoy your wine while you were there. I was with a group of about 8 ladies where some hiked and some did not. They had a harpist playing beautiful music while we were there on a Saturday afternoon. I had no cell service there, but that is too be expected in such a remote area. We dropped by here on a Sunday afternoon and the tasting room was completely packed. Good sign...people laughing and talking...better sign! there was live music going on too. A country singer that did a pretty good job was playing in the room. Seemed like a few people there already knew his music. Putting a few ringers in the room was always a great strategy. But he was good and had a few of us singing along to some of the cover tunes mixed in with his own songs. The wine we settled on was the 2014 Cab Sauv. Not the best wine I've ever had but not horrible either. It sort of reminded me of an old world wine with a little lighter alcohol and some of the funky stuff (mushroom, forest floor, truffle, etc). We had a second glass and then headed back toward Winston. Not a bad day, when enjoying the sunshine. read more

This is a beautiful vineyard! It's a former dairy farm and is surrounded by lush green landscapes. The tasting room is in an old stable and they kept a lot of the original pieces as is. The wine is good, and the owner was super friendly and enjoyable to talk with. They sell a lot of local products from cheese to butter to chocolate goodies. I'm not sure how it has taken me so long to visit this magical winery, but the TR is beautiful! The winery and vineyard is established on what used to be a dairy called Klondike Farms. The TR was once stables and has been beautifully restored and brought back to life. We were greeted and had conversations throughout our tasting with Wayne and another very nice lady. This never happens to me, but I really enjoyed every wine that we tasted. We purchased a bottle of Guernsey Table Wine-it's bottled in an old fairy bottle! This winery has quickly made it to the top of my favorites! read more

Grassy Creek was my first North Carolina vineyard experience. The reason this vineyard gets 4 stars is because the last star comes from the fact that they had two delicious red wines, and I am wholly a white, rosè, or other fruit-wine kinda gal. So, kudos. Atmosphere: Very well-done country atmosphere. Outside has a good view of the vineyards and picnic area. The tasting room itself is housed in more of a museum-type atmosphere. The bar is pleasant, and this was the only vineyard I went to in my Yadkin Valley travels that had complementary tasting chocolates and truffles to match with the wines. The overall atmosphere is historic. Service: The elderly gentleman behind the bar was very hospitable, if a little stuffy and formal. Stories were told, but they were obviously rehearsed. Took away a little bit from the relaxed atmosphere I was hoping for. Wines: You have a choice of a red or white flight at this place; my friend got the white, while I got the red, and we swapped. You get seven choices of red, and there are only 5 whites so they let you choose two reds on top of that if you choose the white flight. There was a big list, so I'll just plow through them. All I can say for the whites is that, if you see the white wine in the milk bottle... try it. It's the last one on the list of the white flight, and it's called the Klondike Farm Golden Guernsey. Aaaabsolutely delicious, refreshing, and light. The mix is chardonnay, sauv blanc, pinot gris, and voignier. I wouldn't even put it in a wine glass if I got some - just drink it out of the bottle. Wine in a milk bottle? Only in North Carolina. As for the reds, there were really only two that hit the spot for me: Red Barn Blend: This is a copulation between merlot, syrah, and sangiovese grapes. This is truly a fruity and full-bodied wine. Absolutely delicious. Klondike Farm Guernsey Red: Like the white, it's in the milk bottle. It's a mix of wines that I'm not usually a fan of, but for some reason it's great. The mix is cab sauv, cab franc, chambourcin, merlot, and noble and carlos grapes. This does come down the throat parading as a sweet, very light, and very fruity wine. Refreshing and delicious, I don't know which I like better, this or Red Barn. If you want a historic experience next to your wine tasting, this is the place to go. read more

There are at least 20 to 30 wineries in this area, but this should be the first stop! Amazing service, local craftsmen have items for sale and the a la carte food of cheese, crackers and salami was tremendous. The wines were delicious, especially the Chardonnay. Plenty of seating and acoustic music made the ambiance even nicer. HIGHLY recommend!!! read more

Exactly what I want in a Vineyard - the low key country feel. I am not a big fan of the overproduced larger variety. This place had it all, the charm, the atmosphere, the conversation, and HELLO THE WINE. I'm not a big red drinker but I do like theres. This was our first stop on a winery tour with friends. The winery is in an old barn that has been beautifully restored and decorated. There are many clever wine related items for sale, all nicely displayed. The tasting was $5.00 for six wines. My favorite of the lot was the barrel select Chardonnay. The other wines were definitely unique in flavor, but did not call out to my palate. One of the owners was present. I remember her warning us not to walk across the dam or she would cry. So, we didn't. No need for a whining winer. read more

The setting is gorgeous and the tasting room is inviting with a great layout. I'd love to spend an afternoon sipping wine by their fireplace, unfortunately I would want to bring in a wine of my choosing. Their wines were satisfactory, but didn't wow me like some others in the Yadkin Valley. Most weren't as full bodied as I like, I'm a red girl. Our pourer was efficient (except one tasting that skipped my glass, my friend said I didn't miss much or I would've said something) and he shared some of the great history and stories of the Klondike Farm/Cabins. I would like to return and stay at one of the cabins, they looked cozy and relaxing with some fabulous scenery. read more
