We have shopped here successfully on many occasions and at different times of the year. This trip was hugely disappointing especially when visiting with family for Father's Day. I've been going here for a couple years now and unfortunately, I agree with recent reviews that the customer service has slipped. It's really hit or miss when I go these days. Aside from the service (more on that below), I find they usually have a decent stock of a variety of plants and they're usually pretty healthy, if a bit pricey compared to big box retailers. I do still prefer to shop here because it feels better than spending at a big box store but it also didn't take much research to discover Pacific Topsoils is owned by GRO-Well Brands, which is itself a conglomerate and by no means a local or small business, which I've seen some reviews assume. Service wise, it all depends on who you talk to and what mood they're in. Recently, I called to check on a product and the young man who answered brusquely said they didn't have it, so I caved and ordered it from Amazon. Then, I went to pick up some plants and discovered they had what I'd called about. I told the older gentleman who was ringing me up about the exchange and he somewhat rudely just said, "well, we always have that in stock," like I should've known, not the other employee who should've known. On the other hand, he did put out a call for someone to help me with the several bags of soil I ordered and a friendly young gal answered. She had clearly been working hard all morning but she wa so helpful and asked if there was anything else she could help me with before she left to assist another customer she noticed. If all the employees had her friendliness and pep, this place would get 5 stars, easy. read more

I've been a regular customer at Grey Barn for a number of years. I live close by. I spend quite a bit of money there. I've been very happy with the quality the annuals I buy every spring. The perennials, not so much. I've had a number of roses, red salvia, heucheras and all my cone flowers not come back the 2nd year. Some of my perennials do well so I will continue to buy those at Grey barn. The others I will get a different nursery sadly. read more

This is my go to Nursery in the Redmond area. I've had very good experiences with the staff when I've visited.

On this Friday I was trying to find some nice plants to appease my wife, I came here and wandered around for 45 minutes, I know nothing of plants so I was hoping to get some help, not only did no one approach me I couldn't seem to find any employees to assist with my needs, I had to walk all the way down to main nursery where I saw multiple employees not working, and playing frisbee golf instead. It was extremely disheartening to not get the help I needed and to see them not even seem to care. I don't recommend this place one bit. read more

I hesitated with this review, but I have now seen a pattern with the employees. Twice now I have gone with very specific instructions on different kinds of soil/mulch/etc that I needed. I explained exactly what I needed, and the employee pointed me towards the wrong product. Recently I stopped by specifically requested mulch, and they insisted that what I wanted was actually compost. People who work here assume you don't know as much as them. I spent more than $200 here today, and the employee servicing me passive aggressively declined to help get a bag of soil to my car, she didn't ring up anyone to help me either. Bad customer service. The Gray Barn is sort of a pretty front for Pacific Topsoils... but it really is a good garden center in its own right. They have pretty much everything you could need, from annuals, to perennials, trees, tools, garden decor.... and the staff is for the most part knowledgeable and helpful. In season, they have a produce stand that stocks locally-grown fruits and vegetables at reasonable prices. They end that season with pumpkins and squash. read more

Pricey compared to box stores, but it's Important to support small nurseries or you end up with the same boring plants everywhere! Imagine how bland that is for bees, butterflies and ... deer. Hehe gotta remember to check for that deer resistant symbol.... And besides, if you focus on perennials, a $4 sedum will bring you more lasting joy than one triple grande. I think it's worth it. This is a nursery for weekend gardeners (and not a chic boutique - not that there's anything wrong with those). Bonus: they have the coolest selection of bird feeders I've seen in a long time! Love this place. unfortunately for my wallet they are on my drive to work. They have decent prices, but super friendly staff and they stock a large variety of edible perennials not found at other stores. Update: After reading some negative reviews about people who brought dogs in... Come on people. Unless it's a service dog, it is not your right to bring an animal into a store. If you brought your cat to a store with a guard dog, that had a sign saying dont bring your cats in, and then your cat got attacked, would you give them a negative review? read more

Very disappointed and frustrated. Purchased 3 Lace Leaf Elderberry plants, which are a bit pricey, end of March 2020. All 3 planted in row in same area, prepped soil, mulched and watered exactly same. 1 died, should be no issue right, have used Gray Barn before, love their stuff and staff have been helpful. Called them this morning and was told since I purchased 6 months and a week ago, they will not refund or replace. With all that's going on in our world right now you'd think a customer that dropped quite a bit of coin on a plant would be helped and taken care of so they'll remain a customer. I will go elsewhere for anything more than a small annual. If they won't stand behind their product I'll go somewhere that does and appreciates it's customers. I love this place. An excellent selection of shade plants and flowers. Lots and lots of planters as well. I ask lots of questions about what to plant and where, etc. and the staff is so patient and really helpful. They have nice quality tools and garden decorations. I like a bit nicer quality tools since it makes the job a bit more fun on those super hot summer days and Grey Barn has that. My favorite spot on the Eastside! read more

BEWARE! I would not recommend bringing small children or dogs into this place. HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT! My wife and I had heard about this place and decided to check it out based on recommendations from friends. We were browsing inside the store part of the nursery when a cat jumped down from the counter out of the blue and attacked our dog. Our dog was terrified and recoiled away as she didn't understand what was happening. She was left bleeding from the nose and lip due to the resulting injury. There was blood all over their floor and the other customers were horrified. Apparently the cat has known issues because it's named 'Psycho' and there is a sign on one of only three entry doors stating that small dogs are subject to attack. I guess they need to update their sign as there are three entry doors and our dog is a gentle 110 pounds. The staff's response to this was to tell us "Sorry, it's their home" and, despite fully admitting to having an aggressive animal that has a history of attacking, proceeded to berate us yet offered nothing but a business card to 'talk to the owners'. Pathetic. Needless to say we will not be returning to this establishment anytime soon and I recommend nobody else does. read more

This is probably the worst experience my family and I have ever had. It was a beautiful Sunday until we took our sweet family dog into this Nursery . The sign on the door warned us, "our cat Psycho will attack small dogs". That was a red flag. We were browsing the store when all of a sudden this black cat jumped off the counter and attacked our dog until she was bleeding all over her face. She is a gentle soul and was shaking in fear. I took her out of the store; blood was everywhere. It was disturbing that they would keep a wild cat in a store. I felt like it could jump on me and attack me at anytime. To make matters worse, people (including the people running the place) were yelling at us and blaming our dog for the attack, although she did nothing at all to provoke the cat. This was an insane experience. This is not a safe place for pets or children. I hope the cat has had all of its shots. I do not recommend this nursery at all. Stay away. Give your business to someone else. read more

Was in search of a Jasmine plant; searched 4 stores and got exhausted. At Gray Barn, saw 4 different varieties of Jasmine - for the first time. Was an amazing experience. I have generated 6 plants out of one root. And ended up getting 100 flowers with just 6 of my plants... When I had to give the plants away, when I moved! Glad to have found Gray Barn Nursery. Poor customer service limits the value of great selection. I was the only customer there, looking all over for the plants I wanted without anyone offering help. I gave up on a couple plants and went inside to find three people chatting behind the counter. They asked me to bring my carts in. It was difficult to get the trees through the door without their help. The previous visit, late on a weekday afternoon, I couldn't find anyone on the property to help me find plants, so I just left. In both cases, they missed hundreds of dollars in sales and wasted my time. read more

Gray Barn - Consistent in disappointing customers - - The best thing about Gray Barn is its location - easy driving from Sammamish and Redmond. Quality is another matter. A fuschia purchased in May never did well, with many yellowing leaves and few blossoms. A fuschia basket purchased at Home Depot in the same time frame compared very well - healthier and cheaper too. My main problem with the Gray Barn comes at checkout. Often the price you think you will pay somehow becomes much higher at the register. Big signs announce 40% off Home and Garden. But when you go to the register, the items picked out never seem to qualify. The fine print on the sign exempts the merchandise from the sale price. BEWARE. read more

I generally like this nursery and found a nice gift here this week but I was astonished by the behavior of the staff person as I paid for my purchase. When I found her and said I was ready to pay she had just stuffed a whole cookie into her mouth which she then proceeded to remove from her mouth when she needed to talk ( I guess it's better than talking while eating). She continued to stuff cookies in her mouth during the time she was processing my payment. She seemed to be caught off guard with a cookie in her mouth when she needed to speak to me. I love roses and over the years (due to not having ideal rose growing conditions) they have struggled in my yard with only a few very hardy ones making it. No matter where I bought them (or how much I spent) I could tell within a month or two if a certain rose was in trouble. About a month or two ago I learned that Gray Barn (where I hadn't shopped in quite a while) was carrying a particular rose I was looking for - so off I went. They had just potted their roses up so I bought the one I wanted - and another that grabbed my attention. As healthy as the roses looked I was skeptical due to past experiences buying elsewhere. To say that I am wowed is an understatement - these two rose bushes are lush, disease free and doing amazingly well - and still in their pots! I'll definitely be making more visits to Gray Barn. Buyer beware! If you are looking for a business that treats customers well when things go wrong then I'd suggest you keep driving to Molbaks or the Bellevue Nursery. I have been shopping at the grey barn every summer for ten years. Two weeks ago on Mothers Day I stopped by (last minute I know) and picked up around 30 flowers. On my last few trips to the Grey Barn I have felt the quality and selection has been slipping...particularly at the prices charged but I was in a hurry. Today I stopped by after calling with 6 flowers that had died (with photos to show they had been planted next to the same exact flower that was healthy). The manager declined to replace them and insisted they had been overwatered...despite the fact that I had photos clearly showing healthy flowers right next to the dead ones. I let them know I would take my business elsewhere from now on...a perfect example of being penny wise but pound foolish. read more

It looks like it's been a few years since anyone wrote a review so I thought I'd weigh in. I've been shopping at this nursery for about 10 years. They are partnered with Pacific Topsoils, but they are a garden center in their own right. Plenty of tools, gloves, fertilizers and pest control products as well as plants. They stock a lot of the organic products that Home Depot doesn't, so they're a great place for that. They also only stock plants that grow well in the colder microclimate of East King County, and they clearly mark what things are annuals. The quality and variety are a step up from Home Depot; closer to Molbak's but not quite as top tier. Their prices reflect the commitment to quality, but I think it's worth it because it saves me the drive to Molbak's when I want something special for the garden. In general the staff is knowledgeable about plants and can provide plenty of suggestions if you describe what your growing conditions are like. The fruit and vegetable stand is no longer there. Instead, they sell fruit and veggie starts out of the structure. Bonus points: they usually have free coffee in the barn; totally hits the spot on a damp spring day. read more
