A staple in downtown grayling.When it's cold out, we'll skip out on making bfest at camp and go into town and warm up with a coffee and The Lumberman Breakfast!!!!! Decent diner staying old school. Very dependable and consistent.

Passing through Grayling on the way to Traverse City, we decided to stop for lunch. We didn't want fast food nor a super long meal, so the Grayling Restaurant fit our needs perfectly. It's good "diner type" food. And while it won't win any awards for culinary creativity, it does the basics well. I ordered two eggs (a la carte) and these were "fine" but definitely reminded me of the "Included" breakfast buffet eggs you often see at a hotel. I mean they are ... scrabbled eggs. But I also got the cinnamon roll pancakes. These were the perfect mix and sweet and flavorful cinnamon treats. They came with butter and syrup but I can't imagine needing either one. My husband had a patty melt and said it had a lot of onions and was tasty. Our server, Jody, provided friendly service and the restaurant decor featured old newspaper articles and maps. It was pretty cool. We'd definitely say if you want a quick bite to eat while in or passing through Grayling, it's a way better option than fast food.

This is a true Main Street USA little area. It was very popular and we actually had to wait about 10 minutes for a table. However, it was well worth the wait. The staff was friendly, hometown vibes and the food was abundant and delicious. The feel of the space was very local and friendly. There's lots of little artisan shops to keep you busy while you wait. It broke up our ride and made our long road trip bearable.

Their Hospitality is top notch. Everyone working together and paying attention to the needs of their customers. I am from Los Angeles and it is so refreshing to have a local dinner with fresh ingredients and good vibes. omelette are cooked to perfection not one brown spot in sight. Veggies are tender and they keep the coffee flowing. Patricia was my waitress but, Sue and Patty also kept a close eye on me.

Our first time trying this place while up in the area. It was a bit of a wait but they seem busy on the weekends, plan for at least 30 minutes. This is a great place for breakfast. They do have limited vegetarian options but what we had was good. The service was a bit slow but they were very friendly. They have a typical old time diner feel. We would return again.

My family has a cottage in Grayling and this is a favorite spot for breakfast. I enjoyed the Spinach omelette, hash browns, and toast with an iced tea today. Lots of filling in the omelette! Yummy ranch also (that was an up charge of 69 cents). It's a small place so it might mean a wait when busy. The staff are kind and the place is welcoming. We always leave full too.

I was in Grayling this morning and had 45 minutes to spare before a business meeting, so I decided to head downtown and find breakfast. I wandered into the Grayling Restaurant and immediately felt at ease. The atmosphere is exactly what I hoped - just like the northern MI family restaurants from when I was a kid. Awesome service and food, good prices... It fit the bill perfectly. I'll be eager to find another excuse to pass through Grayling at breakfast time. :) read more

Stopped here on our way to Detroit from Cheboygan for lunch. Great food and service! They were packed on a Sunday, but food came out quickly. They were still serving breakfast around 1 pm, so the kids were happy about that. We would definitely stop here again! read more

Today when we stopped in the gravy on the biscuits tasted canned Everything else was okay, but that "WAS" the reason we liked this place so it was hard to get past that horrible sausage gravy, won't be making that 25 min ride any time soon- Waitresses were polite as always! read more

I've only been here once, but it was such a lovely and charming experience. My friends and I came in for a hangover breakfast, and man did it hit the spot! Our meals were heart-warming, and the historical clippings on the walls were pretty neat. Just wish this place were open for dinners...hint hint ;-) anyways, give this gem a try for breakfast or lunch read more

This place looked promising. It seemed the place was full of people who judging by the snippets of conversation I overheard were local. After sampling the fare I can only assume if they indeed were local and and ate here often that their taste buds had undergone the equivalent of a lobotomy It was beginning to dawn on me why Burger King was so popular in Grayling. read more

On vacation, we stopped at the Grayling Restaurant because of its diverse menu. Being gluten intolerant, it is often difficult to find knowledgeable wait staff and/or gluten free options in restaurants, especially in Northern Michigan. We were amazed to discover that this small town restaurant is very accommodating to patrons with allergies. In fact, they have a separate room in which they prepare dishes for those with allergies. The restaurant was quite busy, with pleasant and competent staff and the food was very good. read more

This doesn't matter any more, as the resturant will be closing Sunday, September 30, 2012. My family and my husband's family have been coming to the Grayling resturant for years and years! I can't believe it is closing! I have come to know the waitress and their personalities, their families......just a sad day for me...as I know it is for them. We have never had a meal at the resturant that wasn't good. Best of all was the Hashbrown omlet! Not a better breakfast EVER!!!!!!!Also the chicken tenders were a favorite of mine. Loved the honey mustard... No one made it the same....I don't know where I will have breakfast in Grayling anymore.... This is so sad............. read more

This restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch until 3pm. The food is good! We both had a salad with grilled chicken, corn, black beans on greens with a mexican salad dressing. Grilled warm flatbread was served on the side. The waitress was friendly, helpful and refilled my water with lemon several times. The restaurant is spotless. This is a must visit if you are in Grayling! read more

Established in 1937.

Grayling Restaurant Has New Owners Longtime Grayling visitors are familiar with its downtown namesake restaurant that served a legendary breakfast called the Lumberjack. Much to the dismay of residents and visitors alike the Grayling Restaurant closed after 75 years of service this past September 30th. On Wednesday, May 1st at 6:00 am, the doors reopened. Bridget Harland, manager of Spikes Keg of Nails for many years and husband Jim has joined with her brother Scott VanLuchene and sister-in-law Kathy to open what many believe to be an anchor business for the downtown area. "We are really excited to bring back what we believe to be one of the most known eateries in the area. I will be the day-to-day manager and we have been able to bring back several of the past employees to help make this the Grayling Restaurant that everyone remembers" stated Bridget. Their new hours are from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Appreciated that greatly after a long drive. A handful of plant based options like tacos, bowls, and pita sandwiches. I ordered tacos and the pita and both were yummy. Beers are solid and they have other breweries too. Plus cider. The seating options are plentiful (long bar, small and large tables). They can accommodate large groups. The decor is cool inside too. Will absolutely keep coming here when I find myself up north.

We had a group of 6, meaning we got to sample a lot of the menu from meatloaf, smothered chicken, parmesan crusted whitefish, fish fry, and the Sharon and when I say not a single dish disappointed! We also ordered a hot Chocolate cake (10/10 recommend if you want a decadent HOT chocolatey dessert) and peanut butter pie. The restaurant is small, and reservations are required so plan accordingly, but this is such a great place right on the ausable river. They also have several bird feeders and it was so peaceful to watch all the different birds as we sat and enjoyed a wonderful meal.

Gates is a place that makes great food and is low key /non pretentious. Don't dress fancy, don't expect cloth tablecloths or napkins. Do expect solid food. The crew had one vegan and three carnivores. Ryanne and Lexi were great for support and took care of us. We had drinks and a few appetizers as well as entrees. The trout, pork, and steak were great. The vegan salad and pasta were vegan... We finished off with a few desserts and had a great time. The location is remote and beautiful but worth a 40 minute drive.

We both ordered the featured special that evening, Halibut Picatta with linguini pasta topped with shitake mushrooms. We split a salad, each plate was a generous serving (even as a split). The salad I ordered before and it was just delicious with pine nuts and balsamic vinaigrette. It certainly did not disappoint! The Halibut Picatta was out of this world, with just the right amount of lemon inspired sauce with capers. The linguine was delicious, it was a little sticky, but I overlooked it given the whole balance and deliciousness of the meal. Our server Savannah was excellent. My friend and I had a little issue with the wine, it needed to be returned. She was very gracious, brought out a small sampler of a different selection, a Pino Grigio before filling our glasses. We brought a special small Birthday cake for our celebration. They had the cake dressed and candles burning away delivered to our table. Thank you Savannah for making our celebration and our evening joyful and just perfect! The food and experience was even better than the last time I was here with my husband in October. Went here as a kid sometimes when we were in town and loved it. I was very disappointed when I went last year. When I saw it had new management since then I thought I'd give them a last chance. Glad I did! Great food, great friendly service, great prices! read more
