Yelp Review - Bait and Switch Tactics by Subaru of America and Grayson Subaru, Knoxville, Tennessee During our 9.3 years of ownership, our 2017 Subaru Forester has already required FOUR COMPLETE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS (the original factory system plus three full replacements). On average, our Subaru has required a new air conditioning system every 2.3 years! This is a fully acknowledged systemic Subaru design defect involving internal condenser corrosion and premature compressor failure. Because of that defect, Subaru of America previously provided two full replacements at no cost to us and with no upfront diagnostic fee. Initial conversations with Subaru of America's corporate headquarters indicated that this fourth repair would also be fully covered due to the same systemic problems -- and that was their first lie. Service advisor Joshua Byrge at Grayson Hyundai Subaru explicitly used that corporate history and promised my wife that the $334 diagnostic fee (a fee we had never been charged in any previous repair) would be completely safe to pay because Subaru corporate would cover the full repair/replacement and refund every penny of the diagnostic fee with zero out-of-pocket cost. We trusted that explicit representation and authorized the work. What we actually received was a single-line, completely unprofessional "estimate" for $1,694.54 for the compressor only -- with no itemized breakdown, after we were told there was no price ceiling whatsoever. Subaru of America then offered only a pitiful $1,000 partial and fixed compensation. They also required that our $334 diagnostic fee be deducted from the $1,000 goodwill compensation, leaving only $666 toward whatever our total unknown cost might be from having Grayson Subaru of Knoxville, Tennessee, replace our A/C system. This is a classic example of a BAIT AND SWITCH CON - first promising us that the fee would be covered, but only after paying the fee, we find out that they would only cover some of the cost if we took their offer of a net $666. Bear in mind that the last two replacements by Subaru did not require any diagnostic fee, and they covered the full costs for the same systemic problem with their badly designed A/C systems. We refused the open-ended risk. Instead, we took the vehicle to a highly respected independent Subaru master mechanic in Sevier County (35 years of experience solely specializing in Subarus, with a sterling reputation). He opened the system and confirmed it wasn't just the compressor -- the condenser and expansion valve were also damaged and contaminated. He replaced all three major components, plus a full flush and refrigerant, for a flat fee of exactly $900.00, with no diagnostic fee. However, this is proof positive that Grayson's $1,694.54 quote was just ANOTHER BAIT-AND-SWITCH -- Subaru dealers routinely add $800-$1,800 for the condenser and expansion valve once the system is opened, pushing the total air-conditioning repair cost to $2,500-$3,500. Grayson Subaru would have come back demanding thousands more, with our SUV in pieces. Subaru of America has still not responded to our detailed executive escalation letter, which was sent directly to the President/COO, VP Customer Advocacy, VP Service & Quality, and the president of Grayson. I've now filed formal complaints with the Better Business Bureau, the Tennessee Motor Vehicle Commission, and the Tennessee Division of Consumer Affairs. Subaru's short-sighted refusal has already cost them enormously. We had planned to purchase another new Subaru in January 2027, which would have generated ~$22,000 in combined gross profit for Subaru and the Grayson dealership. Across our next 4-5 vehicles, our household will now purchase from other manufacturers. Subaru and Grayson have voluntarily destroyed nearly $100,000 in our lifetime customer value -- all to avoid spending roughly $800 at wholesale on their own known defect. First let me say I LOVE my 8 year old forester. It is my favorite vehicle of all time. I purchased it at Grayson at a time when people weren't so greedy. That being said, the service department here is suspect. They do not send a video of the vehicle showing before and after photos of repairs. They are slow. Once it took 30 minutes for them to take my car back for an oil change. That day I waited over 2 hours for a simple oil change. They also overcharge. The mechanic's fee is around $180.00 -$185.00 per hour, and I am pretty sure they round up portions of hours. Of course the mechanics are not paid even half of that. One of my bills was so high I suspected elder abuse. There is no way to know the kind of job the mechanics do because there is no visual record. There is only a written account of what they said they did. In addition to this, the waiting area is not very comfortable. It is small, and sometimes there aren't enough chairs. There are no snacks, no water, no coffee. (at least none in the afternoon) It would be nice to have water at least. In the past eight years no improvements have been made to the waiting area. If you have your own mechanic, buy a forester! It is the best suv on the market. But whatever you do : BUYER BEWARE of the service center at Grayson. read more

I observed a vehicle return interaction that involved inconsistent communication and unprofessional conduct from a staff member. An individual arrived at the dealership to return a vehicle. During the interaction, the staff member raised his voice while speaking directly to the customer involved in the transaction. The tone of the exchange appeared escalated and confrontational. Shortly after, the same staff member followed the individual outside and requested the vehicle keys be handed over, despite having just instructed that the person leave the property. The keys were ultimately accepted, but the interaction was confusing due to the conflicting instructions given within a short period of time, first directing the individual to leave, then immediately proceeding with taking possession of the keys. From an observer's standpoint, the situation reflected poor communication, inconsistent handling of the transaction, and very unprofessional conduct. read more

Having a low mileage Forester to trade in we know and trust Subaru for reliability and good service. Our salesman went out of his way to make sure this Outback would meet our needs. We started experiencing terrible vibrations in our Forrester while traveling on I-40 just east of Knoxville. A quick call to the dealership had an appointment in a 2 hour window. We arrived in 30 minutes, checked in quickly, given a ride to a nearby restaurant. During lunch we received a quote for the needed repairs. We finished lunch. We're picked up and returned to the dealership and the car was completely within another 30 minutes! We were back on the road in just over two hours, with a car that was running perfectly! I was not impressed with this dealership. This is my second Subaru and use dealerships for most of the service as I travel for my job. I made an appointment for oil and filter and tire rotation and it took 2 hrs. When I asked after 1.5 hrs what the hold up was they told me they had a lot of walk ins today. When I asked if they took the walk ins over appointments. They denied it but obviously took them over my vehicle. As this was my first time there I found the person who directed me where to drive in very cold and unfriendly. When I asked if they would take my coupon from my home Subaru dealership they refused and offered me $10 off. I was disappointed in that as well. I will choose to go elsewhere for any additional service needs as I'm in the area until mid December. read more

Purchased a used Sabaru Impreza and have spent $1,000 on brakes, brake pads, a caliper and more within 2 months of purchase. The darn thing almost caught fire going down the highway! I understand - it is sold as is and according to the manager Jason I don't understand what "as is" means. But I'll call it low standards. But that's not what upsets me. I've had this car for 2 months, unable to drive it for several of those weeks because of one brake problem after another - and now I get a notice for a 2-year old recall!! It's one thing not to check the brakes - but this recall is for a faulty part that could damage the engine! Jason said that they usually do not check for recalls before putting their cars on the lot - and I purchased a Subaru from a Subaru dealership who should know better than anyone else of open recalls on their vehicles!! I felt totally disrespected. Never will purchase another vehicle from this dealership and will make sure no one does either. read more

The dodgy treatment Subaru, and in particular Grayson, has given car owners with the parasitic battery drain problem on 2015-2020 Outbacks, Forresters, WRXs and Ascents (in other words, ALL their cars) is insulting. We were traveling up the interstate from Florida during the New Year, and our Outback hood release would pop up whenever a truck would blow by us. Fortunately, the secondary latch held, but it was unnerving to watch our car hood bouncing up and down as we traveled at interstate speeds. I pulled off at an exit and slammed the hood several times, but it would not hold in the fully latched position. We had family meeting us, and we were supposed to check in to our accommodations first, so we felt very vulnerable and stressed about an expensive delay at a car dealership. Well I'll just add our review to the mix so everyone is aware. We bought our Subaru in FL and had a 3 year service warranty on it when we moved to knoxville. During one of our first oil changes there they over tightened the oil pan screw and oil leaking everywhere. Thankfully they fixed it all but still a rookie mistake for oil changes. So that brings us to this week. My husband went in for an oil change and tire rotation. (About $100) then he sits there for 3hrs and when he gets the bill it's $325!! Turns out they added a fuel cleaner for ($30) that costs $160 to instal. WITHOUT ASKING US! My husband doesn't question that stuff so I called when he got home and got put on the go around for Steve. He was with a customer and never called me back. Beware, and take your car somewhere else that's honest. read more

I was a little aggravated with my situation and he listened and assured me he could fix it. It was an electrical issue with my brake lights at no fault of Subaru. I wanted a hitch on my car (they do that to by the way. Don't take it to U haul. Go see Mr. Mullins) he fixed their big mistake and I was so thankful. Absolutely the least customer focused car dealer in Knoxville.they apparently care about nothing but your money. I've recently had bypass surgery and left my car at Grayson to fix an ignition problem. When they drive my car around there was a flat tire (I knew tire was leaking slowly but would have thought they'd air up the tires) the car started and ran but half of the accessories did not work! I was told they did not know those things didn't work. They did work just fine previously but evidently got disconnected during "the fix". I was told they could "analyze" the problem for another $140. I will never visit them again and will shout from the rooftops how incredibly sorry this dealer is. It's my second and last experience with them. I'll gladly drive to Kingston for a competent dealer. One star is much too generous for this sorry excuse for a Subaru dealership. read more

I will start this review off by saying I had bought a car in the past from this dealership and the experience was so-so. I drove by the other day and spotted a car I was interested in, so I stood by the car for nearly 20 minutes and no aid was given. The car was parked by the door so I walked in and asked to see the car. The salesmen appeared to be agitated that I asked him to show me a car in the 90° heat now bear in mind I have been out there for 20 minutes with no service. I politely asked him to bring the keys to the box because I was interested to drive the vehicle. He said I need to run a credit check. I paused thinking it was a joke. I realize he was not joking and then I took offense. I asked the young man why I would ever do that? Why would I take a inquiry on my credit to drive a $40K car? We went out looking for a car for a car for my daughter yesterday. One of the dealerships we went to was Grayson Subaru. I have never been treated more rudely in my life. We had two separate salesmen approach us while we were walking through the lot to see what they had that we might be interested in. The first one was a bit pushy, but left us alone when we told him we were just looking to see what they had and would come find him if we wanted to take something for a test drive. The other one approached us several minutes later asking if he could help us. My husband told him we were just looking. He kept pushing, so I told him we had already been helped. His response was to tell me the cheap cars that are under $5,000 were a few rows past the Genesis vehicles we were near. This man has no idea what our budget is or what we were looking for at all. The fact that he decided to imply that we could only afford a $5,000 car is absolutely ridiculous. I told him that comment just lost any sale that dealership might have made from us. I also told him he was being an ass. After that, the first sales guy we spoke with piped up and said, "don't worry, they did the same thing to me too!" We just want to look at the vehicles on the lot without being hassled or followed around. If I could give zero stars, I would. I will never recommend this dealership. read more
