We can here to see some farm animals as a fun toddler summer activity. We were blown away by Great Brook Dairy Farm's set up! There are so many farm animals to say hi too and admire. The dairy cows are gorgeous and friendly. The pigs literally smile while sleeping. There are sheep and goats all named and even llamas! Across from the farm animals is a cafe known for its icecream made with the farm cow milk! We tried a 5 icecream flavor sampler. We chose black raspberry, banana, strawberry with rainbow sprinkles, salted caramel, and coffee. I still dream about this icecream sampler... The icecream was so creamy and not too overly sweet. On your way back to your car, stop by the lake where there are picnic benches. You can all enjoy the view and run around or eat. We watched a few baby birds bathe! read more

Great little dairy farm with a petting zoo right next to the ice cream barn. There are different animals including cows, goats, sheep, llamas, pigs, chickens. You can purchase feed to give them. The goats are especially eager to come to the fence. There are also walking trails and picnic tables. The ice cream is so fresh and delicious. The single scoop is generous. I've been here a couple of times and does not disappoint. I'll keep coming everytime I visit Massachusetts. read more

After a hike on the trails, I was really nice to relax, with some ice cream, at a picnic table overlooking the pond. The Extreme Chocolate was probably the best version of this flavor I've ever had. Deliciously very chocolatey and nice smooth texture. The hunks of fudge were pretty awesome. The Cherry Moose tracks was pretty good but not really what I was expecting. I was expecting Moose Tracks, with the usual chocolate swirls and peanut butter cups in a vanilla base with pieces of cherries. What it was, was a cherry ice cream base with what I think was some fudge pieces. Tasty, but I was looking forward to the usual peanut butter cups I've had in the Moose Tracks at many other places. Oh well, I'll know to ask for ingredients next time, when a place's on site menu or website doesn't say what's in the ice cream. My spouse had the peach. The ice cream base really didn't have any, if at all, peach flavor, but there were some nice ripe pieces of peaches in the ice cream. Overall, I really like the texture and sweetness level of their ice cream and I think it's one of the better ones around. I'll try other flavors next time there. But, seeing as one of my very favorites, Kimball's, is right nearby, it may be a while before I have Great Brook's again. read more

I never knew that GreatBrook Farm had a dairy. I had been xc skiing there years ago. Back in the days when I actually thought xc skiing was fun. And you don't associate xc skiing with ice cream stands. Was driving by on the way home from a riding lesson. Decided to stop in. You cannot see the stand from the main road. You just see the sign. Drive down the road and you come to a large parking lot. Pay to park. At this point far off in the distance, across the field and behind the pond, you see the red barn that houses the ice cream stand. Take a long walk down the path through the fields (be sure to do a tick check when you get home) and eventually you arrive at the barn. Lots of flavors and toppings. Lots of creative sundaes to choose from. And pricing is well spelled out. At 6 pm on a cool week day, there was no line. We tried a French Vanilla sugar cone with rainbow jimmies. And a peanut butter Oreo in a cup. Both were kiddie sized. $8.75 for both. Kinda pricey for kiddie sized. You have the option to sit inside or outside. Picnic tables either way. Outside you are amongst the farm animal pens. Some tables are in shade. We opted to sit outside. Occasionally the wind would gust and we would smell the animals. Not too bad. The day we went there was only one person line ahead of us but I imagine this place is quite busy in the warmer months. It's a working farm. Lots to see. An active farm with animal-watching aplenty, Great Brook Dairy Farm offers the local flavor people hope for when craving fresh and frosty ice cream. Plenty of ice cream flavor choices from this milk supplier to Cabot Cheese. An educational panel series, video, and display case gives you a farm-to-table cliff notes on the process, while rangers outside can offer information as they care for these cows, pigs, goats, and other farm animals. As part of a state park, Great Brook wants to tell you about their dairy and farming processes, so this is much more than a feed-the-animals pen. It is a bit of a walk from the parking lot up the uneven, unpaved, slightly mucky dirt path leading to the ice cream shop. Not terribly far, but not wheelchair friendly. Strollers can handle it. Drop some $ in the donation post on the path to the ice cream. This is a state park and they need the extra help for the non-ice-cream season. The atmosphere overall is a bucolic one of picnic tables and trees, with chickens pecking your little piggies if you don't watch out. :) A nice place for families and the local bike riders coming off the nearby trails. Do not wait in line for ice cream without a dog! Apparently after you wait a half hour in line for ice cream they will not serve you unless you have a dog. Clearly there is a lack of clear signage to inform you that you are in the special dog walkers only line. Having to go inside to wait again is not worth it. Stopped by for ice cream on the way home from the Fruitlands Museum based on yelp reviews and glad we did. We had chocolate, peppermint stick, peach, butter crunch and coconut - all were really good. I thought the prices were reasonable. The girl working was very pleasant. It's a cute place with cows and sheep right there surrounded by a beautiful state park. Friendly staff. Lovely grounds. Magical day and night. My family and I have been having a great time on the xcountry ski trails. Lantern skiing is something everyone should experience. We are so glad we bought our ski equipment as they chose to shut down rentals because of Covid. A wonderful staff taking every precaution to keep their staff and the public safe. The experience of the teacher and her group (below) is different from every single time I've been to Great Brook, which is pretty much once a week thoughout their whole season, for the past several years. Their ice cream is creamy and interesting flavors, much better than many of the other suburban ice cream stands we've tried. Hot fudge is thick and delicious. Portions are reasonably generous and very fairly priced compared to every other ice cream stand I've visited (way more for your money than JP Licks or Ben & Jerry's). As you may gather, I'm an ice cream junkie. Great Brook is high on my list of good places to get Ice cream. On weekends they have at least 2-3 folks working there, and although the lines can sometimes get as long as 6-8 people, the wait is rarely very long. I don't know how it is on a weekday afternoon but if school is still in session (which it sounds like it was), their workforce is much more limited. Maybe a call ahead of time to alert the owners would have been helpful. The high school kids working here are always friendly and polite. I've also had some great suggestions for flavors I might not otherwise try. I wonder if the teacher ordered a milk shake instead of a frappe, which is a very different animal. (It still shouldn't be warm, true -- but if your expectation is frozen stuff vs straight milk with syrup, I can see how you would think a milk shake seemed warm.) I tend to stick to plain old ice cream or occasionally an ice cream soda, so I can't comment on their frappes. Last but not least, there is the setting....and what a setting! The stand is up on a rise overlooking a small pond with fields and trees. There's a beautifully landscaped area down by the pond if you prefer to sit farther away from the cows. (Sileage scents are authentic but not necessarily desirable for ice cream eating!) There are bathrooms and water fountain at the state park pavilion next to the parking lot, along with maps of the hiking trails. I hope that the really negative review doesn't turn people off. If you give this place a chance, you might really love it. read more

Not a big ice cream person. Came here for the kids but I had THE BEST butter pecan ice cream EVER!! It was creamy and not too sweet, just perfect. I totally had a craving for more later and went to Gary's for it and it was nowhere close to the same in terms of creaminess, taste, freshness. read more
