First time at this Great Clips. Martha took great care of me and we had a fun conversation. She gave me a fade to a taper for the sides with long on top. She says shes been cutting hair for 16 years and it shows! I got a $30 haircut before and Martha did just as good. I've been getting my hair cut here since I enrolled in UCI, and they've never failed to do a good job. That, coupled with the $16 price tag and I don't know why you would get your hair cut anywhere else! I think the variance that you see in the reviews here is for particular stylists or maybe just off days; I've been here many times and I think I only had the same stylist twice. If you really want a terrific haircut experience though, ask for Tamy. I've never had a cut like it; she is very gentle and makes it an almost meditative experience. It feels so weird to be writing that about a haircut, but it's true - turns out you can get more than just a good look by sitting in that chair. If you let her cut your hair you'll know what I mean, and don't forget to give her an extra large tip for going above and beyond what's expected of a haircut! read more

I have yet to leave a review for this place and yet I've been here about several times over the past couple of years. Sometimes I go because I just need to shorten my hair on the sides and back and do not really car about the quality. However in the times I do care or need to really focus on the quality of my hair, I would not recommend any of the ladies who have cut my hair while I was there. There is always some sort of flaw that I cannot overlook, but I also can't explain it to them properly without them cutting it the wrong way. I will however give props to two of the male stylists who've cut my hair, they knew what I wanted when I got it and it turned out pretty well for my short cuts. I've never made an appointment with them so I've only gotten two cuts from one of the male cutters there that I liked. Came in on a Sunday Night about 2 months ago and John gave me one of the best hair cuts I've ever gotten. I was a walk in and had a really short wait time, though I do recommend an online check in. I'm really picky about my hair and who I let touch it. We did an undercut slick back with the top front being the longest (down to the tip of my nose ~ 4 inches) and gradually cut the top shorter towards the top back ( ~ 3 inches). We did a fade of 0.5 -1.5 on the sides and it was pretty crispy clean. I loved how he took his time and made sure everything was detailed. He even styled my hair a bit after the cut to make sure that when I style my hair, everything falls in line. We had a great conversation throughout the cut and I would highly recommend him. read more

I found this Great Clips by accident about 3 months ago. Location is near UCI. Being open Saturday and since I live close by it has been convenient, to say the least. I have seen both Patricia and Ellie and can highly recommend either. Both are professionals and are as good a hairstylest as any I can remember. I could tell right away that I was in good hands as they both were very confident from the get-go. You can just tell right away. Not only were they both confident but both seem to truly enjoy their work. That's a gift. One word: IVY!!! She is amazing and frankly I'm surprised at myself for not posting before. I've had my hair cut at this location for a couple years now and each and every time, I request Ivy. The cut is consistent, we have great conversations, and she has been able to hide a surgical scar on the side of my head time and time again. She also strategically cuts a hard part into my head (very very thin) so that I can fix my hair easily in the mornings. I can slick it back for work or shag up some wax into it for an edgier look. I've never known any client to step out of her hair unhappy and if Yelp allowed it, I would give her 10 stars!! I thought I've received bad haircuts in the past. I thought I've received bad stylists in my lifetime...But today has topped them all. I came to Great Clips because my original stylist always has reservations like crazy on the weekends. I was also hoping Binh was going to be here but he wasn't. And to really top it off, I have a wedding to be at tomorrow and I am a groomsman. I figured it couldn't be too bad cause I only wanted my sides done which should've been fairly easy. I ended up getting a haircut from some older Vietnamese dude. (Van or vin or something with a v, he has a locked out lateral incisor). He wouldn't stop talking and I was getting slightly irritated because I knew he wasn't paying attention. After he finished and showed me my hair in the mirror, I noticed he messed up on both sides of my head. He cut it so short that skin was exposed. On one side it's a CLEAR V-shaped mess up that is SUPER short and has exposed skin. The other side he didn't even layer or attempt to blend in. In fact both sides were super duper poorly done. I mentioned something to see what he'd say and that's when he gave me multiple excuses and did not take responsibility. He blamed it on the following: 1) "Its the facial hair!" The mistakes he made were far above my facial hair and had nothing to do with my haircut. 2) "The lighting is making it look bad, it's just the lights!" Really dude? I mentioned to him that it had nothing to do with the lighting. I asked the other workers and people who stood there that were looking and they all stood in silence cause it was clear he messed up my hair. 3) "Your hair is naturally thin!" I don't have any bald spots or shortage of hair. Especially not near my sideburns or by my ears. 4) "You don't grow hair in that area!" And that's when I kind of lost it and said 2 things: -"I think I know how my hair looks after +20 years" -"I was here two weeks ago with Binh, it didn't look like this when he cut my hair" All of this occurred while he was showing me the finished product. I stopped talking after I realized he's just a rude prick not taking responsibility for his horrible mistakes. I proceeded to take off the black cover without his assistance and didn't say a single thing due to my frustration. Once I walked to the register, he continued to STILL use excuses. I simply lost it. By this point, EVERYONE stopped working, EVERYONE stopped using their phones, and EVERYONE stared at us since this jerk made a scene. I pointed at all the customers and workers there and said "Everyone can see you messed up my hair but you fail to see it and still continue to use excuses." He finally shut up and never apologized but said "I'll charge you $10 dollars since I only did your sides." I still tipped him and said thank you in Vietnamese (I hate how damn nice I can be sometimes, it's just natural) but it was clear to see I was beyond furious and I was ready to blow but never went off on him. Going forward, I will never receive a haircut from anyone here unless it's Binh. And that's IF I decide to come back. On a side note, I sure do hope corporate looks at this review because it was extremely, extremely embarrassing as well as shocking to go through what I had to go through. I also hope no one experiences something similar. Being talked back to and refusal of ones mistakes is wrong and unjust. Had it been a different professional industry, this would be a career-ender for an employee...I blame myself for not recording the exchange (I really truly didn't want to make a scene). I also don't want to post pictures because it's embarrassing to post pictures of myself as an example on the Internet for the world to see. This place is the epitome of hit-or-miss. That is, if you don't know who to request. Before my friends started cutting my hair (genius idea...saves me over $300 a year) I went to Great Clips because it's so close to campus. Before discovering Binh (the boss playa of this establishment) I had some terrible experiences with some of the lady stylists. I don't know what could have possibly caused me to go back, but I was lucky enough to take a seat with Binh. This guy really knows how to cut hair. He is meticulous, careful, and precise. Although he is a bit slow in cutting, it's worth it. Another great barber is Louis. This guy knows how to cut my hair just as well as Binh does. In fact, I had the age old dilemma with these two (when you don't know how to tell one barber you are going with the other). Barber-client relationships are fragile... Anyways, if it weren't for these two gems, Great Clips would have called it quits a long time ago. I think everyone that works there, or any repeat customer for that matter, knows this. My advice to new patrons: DON'T FEEL BAD FOR REQUESTING BINH OR LOUIS. When you walk up to the check-in, you need to DEMAND these two. Because they're the better stylists, both are consistently busy. So the crappy cutters will always take down your name and immediately try to take you to their station. Don't do it! It's not worth being polite to end up looking like trash. read more

I must have been crazy to come here a second time around, or was it the third? It will be the last time I have to show up here again. I only wanted my bangs to get a trim and got the most horrifying trim ever. This happened last year if anyone's wondering. It was scary enough that the scissors were so sharp, but the outcome made me want to shave the bangs off. I don't remember who I had exactly, but all I remember was that she suggested I should get "layered bangs". I was a student at UCI and frequented this place to get my haircut. Unlike most of my friends who can ask their buddy to shave their head for them or line them up, I actually have hair on my head and wouldn't trust any of my friends near my head with a pair of scissors. Although I wouldn't let my friends cut my hair, I have no problem letting any of the barbers here cut my hair. I'm pretty easy going about my hair. Although they may have different experiences levels, I have yet to come out of the barber hating my hair. Luckily they keep track of what they did to your hair the last time you came on the computer, so I usually just keep asking for what they did last time unless they have any other suggestions. They accept walk-ins. The wait for walk-ins vary. It's $14 for a haircut. You get a dollar off if you have a student ID making it $13. Often times there are coupons for haircuts in the dolllar stretcher coupon book handed out on the UCI campus, the New University (the UCI newspaper), and other newspapers. If you find a coupon make use of it! The people there have always been nice to me, and because it's so close to campus and near Albertson's it is super convenient to get to. read more

First time at Great Clips in Irvine. As an old retired Vet I usually hold out for a place with a barber pole outside the front door. I came here with my son who has more hair than I have ever had. We were welcomed in by Amanda with open arms. It happened to be Veterans day and I had no idea this afternoon's cut would be free. When I went to get a haircut here, I expected a poor haircut based on many of these reviews here. However, I can safely say that there are indeed solid barbers at this location and that the $13-14 cut is justified. Walking into Great Clips, I was greeted by two ladies who asked if this was my first time there. Saying yes, I was handed a form to put down my name, phone #, address, etc.(Not sure why.) I got my haircut from Chuong, a soft-spoken Asian man who was very friendly. Sitting down in the chair, he immediately noticed I had my phone out and asked if I had a picture I wanted to show him and indeed I did. He responded with great enthusiasm and walked me through the haircut I showed him. He closely examined it, unlike other barbers who just glance at the photo. Throughout the cut, he told me the numbers he used in case I get the same haircut and we exchanged some small talk. Once or twice he was shortly interrupted by other customers walking in, but I wasn't in a rush. After the cut, I paid him and he shook my hand and said that he hoped to see me next time. In the end, the haircut was great and would be on par to other barbers that would charge $20 for their cuts. I would indeed come back to get another haircut by Chuong. read more

I'm a guy and not a particularly picky or preppy one. I get the sides shaved with a 3 or 4 and the top trimmed. Not complex but certainly can be screwed up by some cutters. Have only had one such experience here out of 10 cuts or so... So I guess not bad odds. If you have long locks or special hair needs you know that this isn't the place for you to go and get that cut on the cheap. Since moving to UCI has put most of my time in Irvine, I decided to try out a new barber place from the usual back home, since this was one of the closer ones, I decided to give it a try. However, after seeing the service for this business, I am afraid to ever go back to this place again. When I walked into the premise, I was greeted by a female, who seemed like she didn't feel like she wanted to welcome me in. She quickly told me to sign in and fill out some info and proceeded to tell me to wait. The place was not very busy at the time, but from my view on how the people worked, they seemed very rushed to finish any haircutting job. After a short wait, I was greeted by an Asian woman who offered to cut my hair. I had a picture of what hair I wanted and politely asked her if she could do it, but she only took a quick glance and began to complain that she would try her best to do it. That was the biggest hint that this place was not very professional at all or considerate on how the client wanted the hair. She did not even try to discuss how the hair looked or how I wanted when she said she never tried that hair before. Throughout the whole haircutting process, I felt she really was rushing my haircut. Her cuts were very uneven at times, and I saw very uneven parts after I took a closer look when I got close up to the mirror. The whole time she felt like she did not want to do the haircut. I was shocked at how she butchered my hair once it was done. Used and unprofessional hair clip, and did not try to give a fade when I asked. She barley tried to even clean up the mess after the haircut, as I had hair all over my jeans, shirt, and face after the cut. It was just a mess from head to toe. The pricing for the haircut is just not worth it compared to my usual place for $14 ($13 if you are a UCI student). At my old haircut back home, $15 got me a nice, dedicated haircut that gave at least 30 mins to fix my hair. As complicated as my haircut could be, she did not even try to study the picture or ask me how it was throughout the haircut, despite she never tried it before - she even asked me have I done it before, but that was all she asked. I am never coming back to this place again for any haircut. Unprofessional cuts and unprofessional approach to the hair. For normal cuts, sure the job may do; however, for not working with the customer on something never done is just unacceptable. read more

Literally the worst place to go to get your haircut. Tammy was terrible at cutting my hair. She took off 2 more inches than I wanted, the layers are completely uneven and cut horribly. It clearly looks like I have three different hair lengths. And there's just a massive chunk of hair in the front that's so much shorter than the rest and is impossible to cover up. I've gone here for haircuts and the staff are pretty friendly. The pricing is pretty affordable (under 20 for a haircut), but you need to be really specific with what you want. I really like to go to stylists where the stylist will be honest and tell you what hair you can pull off, or what hair style just doesn't work. I been cutting hair here since like 2001. The only people who have cut my hair in the past were Mark and Binh. Mark no longer works there as of 2007 ... but he was the bald guy the only American who worked there till this day. But Binh who has worked there just as long is just as good as Mark ... just not as fast. Binh takes his time with the hair cuts. He's very thorough. My hair cut is easy ... 0 fade 1/2 off the top ... can't fail that ... so give Binh a try ... do not have other ppl cut your hair at this store. Bring your UCI ID card for that 1 dollar discount that you can use towards your tip. Whats also nice is that they have a database that keep tracks what hair cuts you got and when the last time you came. My only gripe about this place is that price has gone up.
