So far this is the best Chinese Buffet I have ever been to in the Twin Cities. My parents live two hours away and drive down to bring my grandma here regularly. We're not usually buffet people but this place is SOOOO good. It's usually busy which means a little bit of a wait, but it's worth waiting for. The buffet itself is huge with a lot of variety, and since it's so busy hot food is constantly coming out. There is also a Mongolian Stir Fry grill which I find mediocre, but it's a nice feature. I'm confused as to how this place can have negative reviews. I've been here close to 50 times over the last ten years and have never been disappointed. Took the boys out for some recreational eating at the Great Moon Buffet. I hadn't been there for a couple of years. We stopped going when the new buffet opened in Signal Hills, just across Robert St. That one has since closed due to poor service. The first thing that hit me when we arrived was the fact that at 5pm on a Monday the place was already packed. The next thing that struck me was the price. $13.50 seems a little high priced for a buffet in West St. Paul. It was pretty crowded and a little difficult to navigate the several buffet stations. I think we all skipped the Mongolian Grill this visit. It did look fresh and tidy, but didn't look like it would scratch my itch. The food I had was hot and fresh. But this wasn't my first rodeo so I was going for the fresh and hot portions toward the bottom of the newly filled items. The place was clean and the service was very good. The bathroom was a different story all together. The sink area was so wet it looked like a baby elephant had been taking a bath in there. Not as many options as the supreme buffet but the food is good.. the service is very quick and they keep your drink filled.. This place is great for lunch very inexpensive.. Got to dinner at a reasonable time on a Saturday night, called ahead and checked what time they closed. Many dishes were completely empty and not being refilled. Tables were already turned on their sides as to not be used anymore. An employee was grabbing condiments off of the tables and came to our table and took our condiments away as we were still here eating. There was no being checked on from employees. As dishes continued to run out employees came out with pots full of freshly cooked food set them on a table , pushed together four tables and EVERY employee that worked at the restaurant sat down and ate , and completely acted like there were no customers. I get it , they've had a long day but for everyone of your employees to be taking a break at the same time on a Saturday night at a buffet is ridiculous! Definitely not worth the $34. read more

Gah, this buffet was so disappointing! I would give 1 star to the food and 1 star for the customer service. This is one of the few buffets I have went to that barely had any dishes to offer! It's busy and bustling with people, but I honestly don't understand how and why, when they don't really offer a variety of different dishes.. I don't think I will be a returning customer, just because of the fact that it is so pricy and the menu isn't even big. The food is above average when it comes to flavor, but do be aware that some of the dishes doesn't taste as fresh; for example their coconut shrimp, the batter for the shrimp didn't taste fresh. It's so disappointing because coconut shrimp is one of my favorite dishes! Despite the food, the customer service is above average, it is better than your average Chinese buffet customer service. Decent Chinese buffet standard. Good selection of food. Large cold selection with salad. Afew seafood item like mussels, shrimps prepared a few different ways, a "steak" offering akin to pot roast, and all the normal stir fried vegetable and meats. Growing up in a Jewish family, I developed a deep appreciation for the Quintessential Chinese Buffet (if you don't understand this statement, go watch a couple episodes of Seinfeld. I'll wait). Great Moon Buffet delivers on my expectations in every way. Wide array of chicken and chicken-like dishes that have different names but essentially all taste the same? Check. Mongolian grill station in the back? Check. Sushi station that you know probably won't be very good but you feel like you should try anyways? Check. Dessert offerings that look like they were bought frozen at Costco and thawed this morning? Check. Sad-looking salad bar with, for some reason, cubes of Jello? Check and check. All the reviews complaining about how the food isn't "authentic" or "flavorful" don't understand the motto of the Quintessential Chinese Buffet: quantity over quality. Is this the place you take that cute girl who you finally got up the nerve to ask out on a date? No. Is this where you go when you're planning to propose? Also no. Is this where you celebrate your first anniversary? No, why are you still asking these questions? Is this where you go because it's a Wednesday night, and you're both too tired to cook and just want a cheap all-you-can-eat meal with a vaguely Asian theme? I have been to a few Chinese buffets. This one is fantastic. The food is pretty darn good! Most of their food is spot on. The fish is a hit or miss depending upon what you get. Those mussels and clams were the best I have ever had. The crab was so-so. As this is my first time trying crayfish, I really am not a good judge. I did however enjoy it. The food gets restocked about every half hour depending upon how packed it is. The service is top quality. They are on top of grabbing empty plates and refilling drinks. Extremely friendly! This is one of the best Chinese Buffets that I've been to. They were very attentive to detail & kept it very clean even though it was really busy-which surprised me. It was 7:00 on a cold Monday night in January & the restaurant was packed. Everyone must have been there because they knew that the food was good. The roast Chicken was especially good & tasty. The Teriyaki Chicken was tender-which seems to be unusual at buffets. The selection was typical & all tasted fresh. What needed to be hot was piping hot. There was a person watching the buffet at all times cleaning up any spills & keeping the food filled etc. Everyone seemed happy & it was a great experience. Highly recommend it. Ok...being from LA & NY my family and I were very skeptical about Chinese food in the heart of St. Paul or Norwegian town! Well first of all it is ok price for all you can eat. The food though was a pleasant surprise. We have access to Alhambra / Monterrey Park in LA (which has some of the best Chinese food around). This place would do quite well and probably kick some other so called all you can eat Chinese restaurants to the curb. For a Monday night buffet, service was great, food was good. I particularly liked the beef bones. Super tender meat on the bone, I haven't been to many places that do this well. The variety of foods was decent and food was being replenished fast. Just make sure to go when it's moderately busy! The sushi was nothing to rave about. Personally, I think the fish felt a little meally and the rice a little too stale/underdone. the chicken options were pretty good. Roast chicken was surprisingly succulent. The wontons in the wonton soup just tasted like dumpling wrap, couldn't taste anything inside it. However, the broth was great to drink in between plates. I would make another decision about going to this place. We've been going here for many years. And has been decent. Things have gone downhill. Hi, I stayed in Minneapolis for 2 years and I am wondering why I dd not go this place in these two years. This is one of the best buffet I have ever been. I just went there for lunch and will not be back. Besides for a salad bar, they had 3 other bars of food and half of it is american food. Mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, pizza, garlic bread! Wow, but thank goodness because the chinese food was so bad, I filled up on pizza and ice cream. Also this is not the place for a fast lunch. I have never seen so many senior citizens at a chinese buffet. They all had walkers and/or moved really slow and did not know what anything was, so they took their time and yours. They have the hot grill here but awful sushi selection compared to Maplewood. I love the grill and I love sushi so it's hard to decide between the locations. Maplewood has a great sushi selection but no grill. Service is better at Robert location. I wish they could get a grill over at Maplewood and have the best of both worlds. The food was hot but most pieces tasted too bland or too salty. The sweet n sour sauce was too thin, the salad bar lukewarm. Ice cream machine spat out liquid chocolate "ice cream." The grill had cardboard protecting the remnants of what was being cooked from dropping to the floor, even the long sticks they used to cook looked like they had notch marks in them. They put so much rice out, it overflowed onto the counter! The counters were clean but the fumes of bleach messed with the smell of the food. The deserts weren't even Chinese. Came here on a Sunday afternoon and the line was out the door. Aside from the wait, the buffet was well stocked with plenty of options to suit anybody. Salad bar, seafood, sushi, chicken, rice dishes, fruits and veggies, deserts, etc etc. They didn't have any bowls for the ice cream now that I recall which made things slightly awkward on my plate;) Overall satisfied. Ive been to this buffet twice and the second time was a bit better than the first. First off let me tell you the food is great, some of it although may need to be cooked a bit longer but im one of those people where i dont like my food soggy. The selection at this place is pretty good, its one of those places you can go to have a good sit down meal with a friend or a relative, i would reccomend this to just about anyone. Another positive is im allergic to shell fish and all the seafood is kept at a seperate serving station away from all the chicken, beef, and pork. I really did enjoy that fact considering ive been to other buffets where i have gotten sick because things were improperly labels and too close together, so ill give this place four stars, i think the only thing that would make it five stars for me is if it had a full desert station for the ice cream instead of just ice cream and no toppings. read more

Ok food, but terrible business ethics. Let me make it clear, there are several great moon buffet, this particular one is located at 1200 Robert St S Saint Paul, MN 55118. You may find this is hard to believe but this actually happened. I went there with a friend and his wife. We came here because last week we were satisfied with the food. However this time at the cashier when we were about to pay, suddenly an old man showed up which I assumed is the business owner, he said the food cost is too high, if we come here mainly to eat seafood then he will lose money, and crawfish costs 17 dollars per pound he said. If we eat lots of seafood then he will not be able to maintain the business. We didn't say anything and went away, because I didn't want to this matter keep ruining my mood and arguing is a waste of my time. However I feel like I am morally obligated to let everybody know how Great Moon is doing their business and how rude they are treating customers. It is a buffet but they give customer attitude if you eat too much. I call for peoples attention to avoid this restaurant due to their lack of ethnics and wrong doings. There is no reason we should let this kind of business exists at all. read more
