I was here for a recent wedding and although the grounds are beautiful ( then again again it's a golf course/ country club). But overall disappointing, I would definitely look elsewhere when planning an important event. I don't know if it was an independent vendor or related to the facility but the sound system seemed to have a problem at the ceremony. The cocktail hour was ok but the dinner was mediocre at best, food portions were minimal and inconsistent. The worst part of the evening was the smug attitude of everyone from wait staff to the bartenders, not very friendly and it made me a little uncomfortable. read more

Ok so Sacred Heart, one of the worst rated universities in Ct and the nation ( 209 out of 439 US News, 401 out of 500 Times, #526 Forbes) purchased Great River golf club, cheating Milford out of millions in tax revenue. Since their ownership they have increased membership from $6000 to 9000 over 4 years. Their daily rate increased from $125 to $250 making it unattractive to most players. Down side for them? Absolutely nothing as they do not need to earn money. So if you were one of the underachieving graduates who were accepted 70% of the time you get a great deal. Good education-not so much. So if you graduated from this pathetic school enjoy your preferred rates as that's likely the highlight of your education. Truly hope these a-holes fail, but most likely not since they have no skin in the game. read more

Went to a Christmas Party here tonight. Gorgeous dining room. Nice bar with good service, a decent sized draft of Stella was $6. Buffet dinner- salad, rolls, 3 pastas (penne with vodka sauce, ziti Bolognese, and orecchiette with broccoli rabe and sausage), veggies, potatoes, carving station. The food was quite good, I especially liked the orecchiette, After the meal they had a coffee station and platters of excellent mini pastries and cookies, I scooped a chocolate macaroon and a chocolate rugelach. All the folks I interacted with were professional and courteous- the coat check lady, the bartender, and the servers. Bottom line? Quite an enjoyable meal in a very nice setting. read more

I brought the family here this weekend for Brunch with Santa. Not our first time here but it's been a couple of years since our last dining experience. The staff did a great job, service was great. Shout out to Jingles the elf who did an awesome job with kids. She was wonderful. Lots of food choices here for adults and kids. Really enjoyed the salmon. The turkey and flank steak were good but could have been hotter. Fresh fruit and shrimp were great. Wife and kids enjoyed the omelette station. Didn't try any dessert but they looked fantastic. The course was taken over by sacred heart starting the 2017 golfing season. They have slowly turned it into a well maintained plush golf course. They have just now (sept 2022) invested in a new irrigation system which is costing a ton. The front 9 layout is incredibly tough - especially from the back tees - a shot makers course. The back 9 is more straight forward but still interesting. Highly recommend. Btw- it's important to look at the age of some of these reviews. Looking for a pretty wedding view thats just about the only thing great about Great river. I recommend staying far away if your looking for a professional planned wedding because this is far from that. My Brother's day was ruined thanks to the lack of planning comming from Cailtin. As she selfishly delivered and bomb dropped news of giving in her two weeks right on the special day of my brother getting married. Unprofessional and her lack of respect for such a built up wedding event with family comming from all over the U.S. She did not follow through and was way overpaid for what she half heartedly delivered. The only professionalism we recieved was through my brothers planning of third party vendors from the professional photographer and the DJ who ended up coordinating my brothers wedding event over Caitlin. As she had her face burried in her phone everytime I turned around to look for her. She had a rude demenor of standing in the way during the cake cutting as well. Which below ill include a photo I snapped of that. Why reappear at that time as throughout the event you were so ghostly? Glad she is moving on from that company but let this unprofessionalism follow you. As you have not an ounce of respect for other people and their events. Also have to touch on how rushed waitstaff was with food/ beverage items. As for food items being whisked away to sudden and quick made people feel rushed and uneased. Otherwise look elsewhere for a wedding event as its way overpriced for what will be delivered. The great river golf coarse is in Milford is a great corse. The staff is super friendly. The holes are well kept. The corse is a 18 hole corse. Extremely challenging. I would not recommend the corse for a beginner. This corse is for more of a weekend golfer that goes every weekend. The back part rims along the river. You can see boats and it smells like sea water. The clubhouse is great there is a pro shop. They have everything you need and custom tee shirts. They have a restaurant on the second floor that had outdoor seating and looks over the mid of the corse. The manager told me that the AMA and PGA were going to play at the corse a few years back but the officials drew out of the corse because it was extremely difficult. Wedding Event: There was 0 integrity as the event unfolded that we planned for 7-8 months mostly via email due to having busy work schedules and the flexibility from the planner was not there. The communication from the start was poor. We were told at one point, after signing a contract: "we don't do weddings this size." We had about 30 people so it was a smaller wedding but they made it seem as they do these often. Also finding out the day of our event, she had put in her two week notice to resign! As her attitude had already shifted to being one-foot out the door, and not really being there as needed, as for what we paid for. Day of event: We were told Great Rivers hosts 1 event a day, this was not the case either. We arrived early around 12:45pm with 0, nothing prepared and setup when we were told when the event prior to us was finishing a day before and we would start preparing. Absent Caitlin on the phone didn't even greet us as we got in. Caitlin was excusing herself to give her notice and decided to let us know as we were trying to prepare and nothing was getting done with the event only hours away from people arriving. One of the beverage managers let us into the suite to drop things off. Once Caitlin was finished with her personal calls, she told us they would start setting up at 2pm as we were telling her nothing was setup and there seems to be not a lot happening and guests arriving at 3:30pm. Caitlin cleared the room and started half-hazardously setting up. I came into the ballroom to the wrong linens down and Caitlin was placing center pieces, I had to correct her. She was completely unprepared, and had no regard. Where is the clipboard, the preparation, the notes we spent months on picking and choosing? She assured us it would be already setup a day prior, the rest of the family arrived around 2:15pm to get ready with, after wading through the large dinner party (that was not ours) outside as our guests were short to arrive. Caitlin busy with the large party outside that was not ours and was not directing any of our party and guests upon arriving. Not one of our guests arriving received any refreshments. There was no ushering people to where they were suppose to go. Guests were to come in and sign books, drop off gifts, receive refreshments that they never got before the ceremony. As that was included in our pricing. The grooms sisters were going back and forth with family ushering them where to get ready, and where to go. Even the grooms at one point?! Caitlin the assistant/planner, that we paid good money for, was with a different party! As we were getting ready, in the hallway, they are checking in an entire rehearsal dinner of 40-50 people. Caitlin was absent and not directing our party we paid over $5000 for.Yet again- After the ceremony there was no directing of the crowd of where to go. We waited embarrassed with the photographer for Caitlin as she finished her personal call to take us to the fountain to take pictures. None of this went unnoticed by guests, and by our vendors. When you have vendors asking you where the coordinator/planner is and why they are absent that's not a good representation. I had to have close family step in and direct around and that alone is embarrassing. From the lack of respect and integrity for my "micro wedding" shall not go unnoticed, to the blatant disregard of Caitlin with her face buried in her phone when she was most needed and or if she was needed, she was no where to be found and unavailable. Everything was very rushed including breaking down too quickly. We had the venue until 9:30pm and they began to wheel in more tables and break down what we had at 8:30pm to setup for another party. Cake was tossed quickly before people even sat to eat. My vendors Emily McCarrol, the photographer, and DJ Dom from CNT, directed my family around and keeping the wedding coordinated to some degree. They ran the show, not Caitlin. I would recommend to go somewhere else especially for spending this kind of money. This was a joke, I feel bamboozled for what we paid and how we were treated. Have now been to this place twice both for weddings this past summer. Both times a massive disappointment. It's not a great setup for weddings to begin with but this venue is just average at best. Younger staff is friendly I will say that. There's an older woman who I believe is the head of dinner services, who is just not pleasant. Looks miserable and isn't helpful or accommodating. Now the food. Gasp. The cocktail hour food is limited and tastes frozen. I had steak on a stick which felt like I was eating the stick it was so tough and dry. Then the entrees. Said they were out of filets which I found hard to believe. When a venue says that, they are either being cheap or trying to save the extra filets for the staff. We were served dry disgusting chicken over the blandest mash potatoes imaginable. The chef does not believe in salt... AT ALL. Hope I don't have to go back for any more events in near future. Please, please, please do yourself a favor and skip Great River for your events. I've been here for sweet 16s, banquets, parties but never a wedding. The food is inconsistent, meaning you'll have a piece of beef that's borderline black and blue next to one that's well done--all in the same chafing dish. I also am pretty sure they use frozen salmon because it is fishy. Not sure how the restaurant is, truthfully it might be better because the food isn't as mass produced but don't bother hosting your party here. The table settings are sloppy where the water glass isn't even placed in the same location for each setting. They just generally lack attention to detail. read more

Nice course and have played numerous times, but when I had to cancel my tee time recently, I called and spoke to someone in the pro shop who said they would cancel and credit me back as I complied with their cancellation policy, but apparently never put it through as I never received the credit. I called the pro shop when I noticed and the best they would offer is a course credit. I told them to keep it and enjoy as I won't be back. Poor service. read more

THE GOOD: 4) Buddies road trip yesterday. Took the ferry from Pt Jefferson and then 20 min to the course. Course located in upscale neighborhood. Impressive clubhouse when you drive up. Great service at the bag drop starting and ending round. Pro shop was quick and efficient since we had to pre-pay the $135 round when booking tee time. THE BAD: Wanted a yardage book since we had never played there before, they cost $20 in the pro shop so we forgot that idea. Cart GPS does not provide any slope or green reading information prior to playing any hole. I wanted a "poker chip" or ball marker for my collection, didn't have any, said they were sold out. THE UGLY: Having No Idea about this course we started on our adventure. Up and Down, Up and Down, severe slopes every which way in the fairways, tee boxes, fairways and greens need a good agronomist to work on them. Sparse or missing turf everywhere. Some greens had bare spots or dead turf. The undulations of the greens are severe, the pin placements yesterday were brutal. Almost all rough areas had large pieces of turf overturned from deer pawing the ground all over the course at night. We almost styed around for some "night hunting" LOL. We are four guys with handicaps of 12, 16, and (2) 18's. One player shot 87 with about 7 putt "gimmes" , the rest of us were 25-30 Over Par at the end of the round. Between all 4 players we lost 18 golf balls. The scenery is very nice, the practice facilities are first class, and it's a river view golf course on a lot of the holes. We ate on the outdoor patio and had menu choices of pub food or regular dinner menu. The food was delicious, service was top notch, cocktails were perfect. We caught the 8PM ferry back to Long Island and discussed our day....Would We Play Here Again? All said NO, to many other places to play that are more fun... sorry GR .... read more

I played this course in an effort to play the all best public courses in CT. This is no doubt in my mind that this is one of the best public courses in CT. One of the most impressive aspects of the course is that it is in fantastic snap. I played here after 2 days of thunderstorms and the course handled it well and drained impressively. The greens were close to perfect. As stated before, the staff was very helpful and accommodating. I was also a single and I was paired with two members where were extremely friendly and helpful. They helped me navigate this challenging course. The range is also nice however due to the position I couldn't practice with my driver. Downsides are that it is rather expensive at 120 weekday rate, and the course is tough. However, I would definitely recommend this course and play it again. read more

I played Great River a couple of weeks ago to complete my Conencticut bucket list. (I'm using Golfweeks Best Courses You Can Play as my guide). The course was in excellent shape and service was outstanding all around. First off the staff in the Pro Shop was first rate. Even threw in a yardage book when I said it was my first time there. The practice facility was excellent. It was mats only on the day that I played but they do have a grass hitting area, as well a couple of chipping greens. The only issue I saw was that the range was close to the 10th tee and I did see some range balls in that general area which can be hazardous. The course was well maintained and in excellent shape. There was some very minor damage from Hurricane Irene but nothing that affected play. The course itself is well laid out and flows nicely. It plays difficult but fair even for a high handicapper like me. There were only a couple of holes that didn't agree with my eye. The pace of play was fine the day I played. There was no beverage cart that day either but not a deal breaker for me. I only had 2 minor issues with Great River. Ther first being price. While a very nice course, I don't feel there are ANY courses that are really worth $120. My second issue is booking tee times for a single. This is actually a hassle at most golf courses not just Great River. While I understand the issue at heart, I still think they make it too difficult for single to reserve a time. I played on a Monday afternoon (not a weekend) and when checking online, there was an entire hour and a half that was open but still took some relenting by them to give me a time. Overall it's a nice course and deserving of it's praises. I would play again but I have other courses I need to knock off my bucket list as well. read more

I live in San Francisco but have family in Milford. One of my friends in SF told me about the course so I was chomping at the bit to play there the next time I was in Milford. I went out on a Monday very early May for twilight. The twilight special included balls and cart. The course was very difficult and the back 9 seemed to play alot longer than front. the Greens had some break but played very slow. We had to be aggressive with the putts. The course was not very crowded and we got in 18 in a little under 4 hours. Fantastic scenery along the river. Staff was fantastic. The starter/marshall even got us drinks and brought them out to us. I can't wait to play this again. read more

They canceled my tee time reservation with 12 hours notice. Inside their cancelation penalty window and left me hanging with clients flying in for golf. Never heard of a golf club canceling on a paid reservation before. I would be very leery for anyone looking for business related golf. This place just doesn't care. read more

Nice course. Horrible golf ranger named GEORGE. Rude, aggressive and completely unprofessional. Told our group to speed up when we were clearly held up by a group ahead. They left after 9 holes then he chaperoned us for many holes often making snide remarks. The walkie talkie to order food didn't work so we called it in with him rushing us on that as well. Wouldn't play there ever again due to his rude demeanor. read more

Course is nice, management is pretty rude. We were told course pace was 2hrs 10min for 9. We got to hole 8 at at 2 hours and management came down to say that we were significantly behind time. When one of our members said "We will speed it up, we've never played here sorry." The man responded with "I can tell." Additionally, they didn't see the two kids walking ahead of us that we waited for on numerous holes. We also received no warnings before this, we sped up our game and the people behind us were 1+ hole behind, yet we got attitude. read more

Let me say that overall this is a beautiful golf club. The people are nice the tee boxes are nice and the fairways are nice. Also the view is beautiful and the carts were great. For 140 per round I don't even complain that there isn't a GPS in the cart. It's ok. Here is what is not OK... The greens are unforgivably atrocious. That is me being nice. They are almost unplayable... The fact that a course could allow the greens to become as if a bunch of wild animals had trampled all over them and then someone took a hammer and then indented as many times as it could on the greens. Let me also say that I am by no means a hack golfer. I spend a lot of money to enjoy a sport that very few can appreciate... This course should be ashamed of the conditioning of the greens and I will not be back to spend my money at a course that clearly has no pride in the beauty that it holds. My family and I came here for my cousins wedding. This review is for this event only as I haven't golfed here. The staff were terribly rude. They were unpleasant during the open bar and at dinner, they took your food and drinks away before we were even done eating. They hovered around our tables waiting to pick up our plates and kept asking if we were done. One of the bartenders even put his hand in my sister's face and refused to serve her twice! On another note, I'm a nursing mother, and I understand babies don't normally make appearances at golf clubs, but they were very unaccomdating to my needs. And lastly, when the music was to loud, one of the staff members refused to let me through the main doorway even though my baby was obviously in distress. So while the venue was beautiful, I was very disappointed in the staff, especially upper management. read more

I went to there on 7/29 with 3 other friends. One of my friend recommended it is the best course in CT, I drove there for 2 and half hours. From the beginning, the marshal followed us and pushed us to finish each 9 holes for 2 hours. My 3 friends are single players. I don't know how good players can come here and finish 18 hols for 4 hours. I never come back here again and the golf course should post on the website to warn to people about the course should be finish within 4 hours. read more

Played here for many years in the past and played a couple of weeks ago and it was always in nice shape. Nice practice range, nice facilities, nice tees and fairways but to spend $140 for totally sub par greens is a rip! Not sure if its a Sacred Heart thing or the golf course management team but the greens are terrible!! Some seem to be now mud and very thin grass. Greens are very inconsistent. Im a single digit handicapper as well as my friends and it was an embarrassment! What happened?? They were so good for so long and Ive played other town courses whose greens are in much better shape with more play!! Sorry Great River but we wont be getting our money until some change happens. I honestly think they are losing the greens. I woud much rather take my $140 and travel to Fox Hopyard or Lake of Isles for sure! Good luck but please get your stuff together as we love the layout but true golfers rate the course on the greens and these are truly atrocious! read more

We are summer residents of Milford. We love the course at Great River with its challenging holes, beautiful scenery and the best hot dogs of any course ! However, we do have some issues. Most of the time when we play it is mats only at the range. Also, when we played this week the snack bar was closed and having to wait at the bar for lunch took way too long. And, no ranger was working that day to move along the painfully slow players ahead of us. We just passed them after nine holes to find two empty holes ahead of them. To top things off......when we were done we politely asked the staff to bring our clubs right up to the car as we were leaving. After waiting way too long we went to see what the problem was to find the young man sitting near our cart chatting away with a female employee. Apparently, he forgot about us. We are members of a country club at our winter residence and have belonged to a number of other country clubs over the years. I guess when you play at Great River you have to keep in mind that it is still a great public course with only public course services but country club fees. read more

We recently held a Saturday night 80th birthday party in the banquet hall. The party had about 100 people, a DJ and a dance floor so it is as formal as you can get for a birthday party. The management worked beautifully with me from picking the menu, to how the set-up will look. Lindsay and Zak facilitated the party with such professionalism and help that it ended up being a great event that people talked about ever since. The food was great and the facilities were beautiful and different. Everyone asked us how we found the place. I hadn't done a formal event at a hall for 26 years so there were times Zak would quietly advise to me on what to do and when. He suggested extra tables in the last minute to facilitate our last minutes needs and managed the service waiters perfectly. Linsday put up with my many questions and emails. I expect a banquest facility to have the knowledge and expertise to ensure a great event and to help us as needed, the entire staff did just that. I would definately use them again - now need to find another reason to have an event. read more

My son and I were given gift certificates from my wife to the tune of $140.00 each to play this course,we were looking forward to it.The morning we played we were teamed up with a great couple in there elder years.They couldnt have been nicer,we had a great time playing with them.the problem was the rangers breaking our stones half the way cause of slow play by them.We were constantly watched by them for several holes,this made our round unenjoyable ,We did not enjoy the round and will not spend that much money to go thru this again.I know the couple did not have the strength to hit the ball far but they tried,they finally quit on the 16th hole,so we said goodbye to a wonderful couple and finished out.This is a beautiful course but as a twosome if you get teamed up with people who take longer then expect the rangers to be on your ass.We both play at our respective clubs and will enjoy it more than this club.Too bad a beatiful day and course was ruined. read more
