Kevin repaired my Martin D28 I bought used in 1990ish. Glad he's back! I have a few more to be setup and refurbished.

Not a fan, old dude ripped me off twice and I left with more problems than I came in with. Wanted to get the electronics fixed on my Fender Strat because the pickup switch was crackling when plugged in, so they replaced it and fitted it with a god awfully ugly and bulky Lego-looking switch tip which didn't match my guitar, so I had to go and buy a proper looking switch tip somewhere else because they didn't have them there. Then the pickup positions between the neck and bridge didn't work (sounded incredibly muffled, tone knobs didn't work), so I took it back to see if he could diagnose and fix it, and he charged me again just to do a half hearted solder job and not resolve the issue. Save your money and take it to somewhere who will do it right the first time read more

Bad service. I don't like to leave low ratings because I am also a business owner but his place really needs help. When I dropped off my guitar I was told by the owner it will only take a week. After 4 weeks with no phone call or anything from this place I decided to go back and find out what was going on. The owner greeted me and asked me what I need. I said. Well it's been more than 4 weeks since I've dropped off my guitar and I need to know that's going on! The service was supposed to be a recalibration of the Barton bridge and to change the strings. 4 weeks after the owner couldn't even find my guitar in his own shop. I waited 53min For him to find my guitar!! Nothing had been done, he begged me to allow him to change the strings which took home another 30+ min because he waited on someone else etc. Long story short he didn't do what I asked him to do but he did charged me the full amount. Then he blamed the situation on his hip problem but long story short if you are in business keep your clients informed at all times. read more

Was extremely nice and helpful. I was referred to him by a fellow customer, he calls him, Dr. Kevin which I thought was very appropriate because he helped me with my nephews guitar string problem and it took only like 2 to 3 minutes. I recommend him very highly. read more

Best musical instrument store ever!!! If you're having a bad day, just pop in and talk to Mr. Kevin Perry for five mins, you'll leave feeling like a million bucks (also, you might be holding a super cool new strat). Service/repairs/set ups: 10/10. Masters at work here. Quality/selection: 10/10. Fender, Gibson, Taylor, Gretsch, and many others. Fair and competitive prices. I saw a review with a lady bitching about a ukelele capo price...like..what?? Are you insane? "I found one on (big corporate website) for $X, and they charged $X". First, a ukelele capo?? A UKELELE CAPO... GSM sells quality lady!! They are a Houston institution!! I bet you order your American flags from China (because you're a cheap-ass damn commie). There should be a store policy that you're charged double for asking for stupid shit like a ukelele capo. Ok..rant over..sorry bout that... Anyway, GSM is a mom n' pop surviving in spite of the big box and big website competition. And there's a reason for that. Please get you're next instrument from here, and I promise you'll be a customer for life. Can't beat Kevin when it comes to experience, guitar repair knowledge, or friendliness. I love visiting this small music store just to say hello and talk shop. Kevin was also there for me when I had some Fender warranty work that needed to be done on my strat. Would shop there more often if I lived closer. read more

I've been actively going to Great Southern Music since last September and it has been my favorite music shop I've ever been to. It's not vast amount of inventory they have, but Kevin and Gary have been the kindest and most genuine people I've met in this business. It kept me coming back and giving them my business. I've never been forced, persuaded, or talked into buying something. I even tried to co-sign one of my guitars and it didn't work out and they have it back and apologized about it not working out. I've gotten my guitars set up by Kevin and they are top notch, he is an excellent luthier and I would recommend anyone to him. In the past few months Kevin has been able to order me the gear I've wanted and I couldn't be happier. Kevin took great care of me and got my new strat exactly where I wanted it. I ordered a fender player series online from another retailer and when it showed up it had a few issues. Kevin worked with Fender to get some items fixed under warranty and I had him do a full setup. On getting the guitar back it was better than I could have hoped for and now plays effortlessly. All the little issues were taken care of and I can't seem to put it down. I'll definitely be back whenever I need additional work done or am looking for a new guitar. Thanks Kevin! read more

Been taking instruments to Kevin's shop since I moved to Houston years ago and my guitar was damaged in the process. His son, Justin, was 9yrs old then. Now Justin is helping manage the business! I've purchased several guitars over the years including a very nice Taylor for myself and one a few years later for my daughter. Kevin's helped me decide about new guitars, amps and sound equipment. I have also sent some friends and students to him to purchase instruments and everyone's been happy with the service and products they obtained. Great experience for the second time in past 5 years. They repaired some loose binding, did a pro-setup and put new strings on my 14 yr. young Martin D28 and honestly was blown away at the difference it made. The pro-setup was $150 and worth every penny, an investment I make about every 5 years based on how much I play. Playability and intonation are very important to me and they got both spot on. They dressed and adjusted all frets nut and saddle to create perfect (my ears and tuner) intonation and playability which truly make it a joy to play this incredible guitar. All the guys were a delight to work with, they did what they said they would do - when they said they would do it and delivered a top quality job. This is my second experience with Great Southern and will definitely use them again and recommend them to others. read more

This music shop has great deals on strings, and does great repair and set up work for guitars! I've taken both my Ibanez and Fender electric guitars in for service and set up, and they did a great job! They figured out what the problem was with the frets and fixed the buzz! They stock a great line of Fender guitars and Amps! I have noticed that they always keep the affordable Squire's hanging right next to the American and Mexi- Strats, and not stuck off in the corner. It tells me that they care about the budget minded player, and find ways to help him or her sound like a pro, or they find ways to help the new player get gear for less. This is a really nice place and all, super cute music store, really great customer service. The only problem I have with it is that they sold me a ukelele capo, I could've gotten elsewhere for $15, for $27. The price is just ridiculous. Everything else in the store didn't seem to be as outrageously priced and if I wasn't in a hurry to get a ukelele capo, I probably would have ordered the same capo on Amazon for half the price, but oh well, still a really nice shop read more

Very helpful and friendly staff! My daughter takes lessons from Ron and he is a great instructor! Ron is a results driven music professor who takes the time and energy to make sure my daughter is learning her notes and strings effectively. Not to mention his time management skills are always on point. The only complaint I have with this place is the size of their music rooms. With all the money that I and everyone is paying I'm pretty sure they can afford to upgrade a little, or a lot! read more

Dropped off my Fender Strat for a refret and set up. Guitar was ready when promised, and they did a spectacular job. The tech was very knowledgeable, and Kevin's customer service was awesome. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is I wish there was a waiting area for parents whose kids are taking private lessons. For a 30 minute lesson, it's pointless to leave and come back. Otherwise, the staff is always friendly and smiling. The owner (Kevin) and his son obviously enjoy what they do. Their prices are reasonable and they are always well stocked. The staff is knowledgeable and able to answer any and all questions regardless of customer experience. They treat the beginners with the same level of courtesy as the veterans of musicians. Gabe, the drum tech, gave me absolutely incredible customer service! He met me outside at my car to help me with a repair I needed (had a sleeping baby with me), got all my info, etc. He went above and beyond and I was really impressed. I've used these guys before for years and they are top notch guitar techs and repairmen - especially if you need work done on a Martin. I've used these guys off and on thru out my life. Every now and then I'd use someone else for my adjustments and repairs due to moving or something of that sort but I've always come back to GSM. Thru 2013 - 2015 I've drove from Louisiana to Houston so I could drop off my guitars because I couldn't find anyone else that could do as good of a job and get it right the first time. This was my first time purchasing a guitar and had no idea what I needed to consider. I went to Great Southern Music and Kevin, the owner, took as much time with me to show me different types of guitars and which ones would fit me best. He gave me lots of information on how to hold it and which picks to use. I didn't feel rushed or idiotic for asking questions so it was a really comfortable and enjoyable experience. Kevin told me to bring my guitar that I purchased back to have it tuned and checked out because he likes to make sure everything is working properly; in addition he said if anything malfunctions with my guitar they take care of it because of the brand I purchased. They've been in business for 20 years and just relocated to Cypress; I'm so happy they did because now I know where to take my guitar for all of its needs and they even teach lessons. Ordered a keyboard, and even paid half of the cost to have it ordered and was told i can pay the rest in three payments. They also said it wouldn't take more then a week to get the keyboard. Two weeks later I finally get the call that the keyboard has made it to the shop, and when I went to get it they told me that I have have to pay the rest off now or I can't have the board. After all the lies they had told me I got mad and refused to take the keyboard and wanted my money back, and they said no because they ordered it just for me and I own half of it since I paid to have it shipped. I did ask if i can have the half, but the manager went and called the cops over a joke. These are some mean people, and I've purchased stuff from there before and never had this problem. I guess they must have grown smug over the years and think they can do what ever they want to people, what a shame. read more

Recently was the 2nd time that we have taken a guitar into GSM for repair. This time it was a 1981 Takamine F-349 acoustic that was inherited. The guitar itself is not worth a lot of money but there is some sentimental attachment. Somewhere in it's history, unsupervised children had gotten a hold of it and damaged the binding and must have used a crayon as a pick; the guitar also had no case. GSM did a fantastic job on the repair and somehow managed to get the crayon marks off the pick guard and body without damaging the finish. They also restrung it and ordered us a prefect fitting hardside case. The total cost was quite reasonable considering the quality of work and end result. In addition, the folks at GSM are the most knowledgeable, helpful and friendliest people you'll meet in the business - unlike that national chain we're all familiar with! read more

All the employees are experienced and knowledgeable when helping me. The repair shop is known nation-wide as the 'go-to' shop by many professional musicians. I just picked up my refurbished bass from Justin and Andrew and their team at Great Southern Music, and I can't even begin to describe how pleased I am with it. They went above and beyond to take my old, early 80s Ibanez P-bass copy and re-make it into the custom P-bass of my dreams. The best part is that I was on a somewhat limited budget and they worked with me and did a lot of extra searching to put together an insanely nice bass for a VERY good price. I took my custom guitar made by a lutheir who only made about 300 of them in his lifetime for some repair work. They took such great care of my baby and the work they did exceeded my expectations. I didn't know this guitar could sound so great. It really is like a new guitar. Would definitely recommend letting them work on any of your guitars. read more

Everyone is friendly, however they are like used car salesman in this place! They will say anything to get you to come in and spend money. The selection and prices aren't anything special either.. Ive bought a guitar & amp from here (decent money) and think they would be honest with me when I ask how much services/repairs are... Guy says a pickup installation is $40 and it'll be ready in a day, maybe two. Well a week and 73$ later, I'm forced to pay to take my guitar back. You're much better off buying parts/pedals or basically anything online somewhere else. I'd rather do my own installations & take my things to a place that will tell me what the prices ACTUALLY will be instead of holding it hostage. Crooks! read more

Selection of guitars is poor. Very limited selection of nicer guitars, no Gibson or PRS. Mostly beginner guitars. Also things are priced at MAP. Better to shop online and get a better deal and save on sales tax. read more
