Adrian, MI, is a small city (population of approximately 20,000). And this restaurant is the best in town among three others. Now, I must issue a disclaimer: I moved to Adrian from the Los Angeles, CA, metropolitan area. As you can understand, there are thousands of Chinese restaurants to choose from - some of them absolutely terrible and some that are absolutely fantastic. This does not make me a "food snob," but I have to be honest here. The restaurant is run by a family that is quite friendly and works hard. The product is quite good, and one will develop a favorite dish to order here and there. They are happy to adjust their recipes within limits to accommodate customer needs. [My wife is susceptible to MSG, for instance - we tell them each time, and they have NEVER failed us. The downside to this business is that they are NOT open for dine-in at dinner. This is a carryover from COVID, though it may be compounded by a staffing issue as well. They survived both instances. This by itself is admirable. They do have dine-in from 11-3 pm at lunch, although I have yet to try having lunch there. Naturally, DoorDash is available for delivery, and you can always drive over to pick it up. read more

I absolutely love it here. The food is always amazing. And it's consistently good. There are a few Chinese buffets in Adrian but I'd rather come here any day. The husband and wife owners are always so friendly. Hot and sour soup is amazing. read more

I am amending my review. My previous review was pre-Covid when the food quality was much better at this restaurant. I don't know if they changed ownership or what happened but nothing has tasted right post-Covid. The hot and sour soup now has a tangy, chemical taste. The gravy for the almond boneless chicken is thick and floury with chunks of flour not quite stirred all the way in. I am really sad this place has gone downhill because it used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant in Adrian. I will update my review again if/when they improve. read more

The portions are ENORMOUS! We had ordered food for 8 and there was so much it came out in a box. The crab ragoons are pretty good. I know they are fried but these didn't seem too oily. The egg rolls were basic and fine. I didn't eat any of the soup but everyone seemed to like what they had. We had hot and sour and several egg drops. The ABC chicken was something I sampled that someone else ordered. It was flavorful. The breading tasted slightly seasoned. It was a huge juicy3 serving size that could easily feed 2 adults. I ordered my dish curried and 5 star spicy. I was disappointed in that it was mainly more salty than spicy. It did have a good taste to it, and I did eat it all but definitely not 5 star spicy. Overall, for the price, the variety, cost, and and quality, this place was really good. A suggestion would be to find an alternative to their styrofoam containers. Recommended. read more

Be sure to check the date of the reviews. This restaurant is not the same place it was pre-covid. The food is not good. Strange bland favors and the fried rice is now a disgrace to fried rice. Very grainy and brown. Only rice, nothing else. The hot and sour soup was the only thing that actually had flavor and it wasn't too bad. The General Tso chicken was very crispy but the flavor was completely lacking and the sauce was a weird dark brown color. I don't know if this placed changed owners but based on how bad the food was, it certainly went from being the best Americanized Chinese food in Adrian to the worst. Hugely disappointing! Came here for the first time on New Year's Day to order 6 take-out meals for my family. Every last meal was very bland, with not a lot of sauce and extremely dry. The rice was crunchy and seriously over cooked. Also, when you order fired rice, isn't there supposed to be veggies in there? Waited 45 minutes for our order, just to get home to rock hard spring rolls, cold bland food, one order missing (replaced with two of another order) Will not be back, and will making sure to tell people NOT to eat here. read more

Doesn't look like much when you walk past, but inside holds a pleasant surprise. Chinese restaurants are something I am usually terrified to try for the first time. However, my family took the chance, and now we simply cannot stop coming back. I have told so many of my friends about this place, and it has become their fav Chinese place too! Marsha is the best waitress and knows our whole family's order by heart; we are on a first name bases with her. She is fast, friendly and attentive. Takeout is also very reliable. Always dependable Chinese food. If you want 'spicy' ask for 5* super spicy else it will not be at all. Soups are traditional and quite good. Mu su is good as is Egg fu young, also Crispy Beef and Orange Beef. Shrimps will be tiny so just expect that. It always seems the veggies are mostly celery even when snow peas are listed. One of the better restaurants in Adrian. We always get takeout. It is close to our hotel and Adrian College. The owners and workers are very nice and the wait is usually 10-15 minutes for takeouts. Don't expect authentic Cantonese food, but they do a decent job of Chinese-American food to fit the American taste buds...and for that, they are the best in town. China Garden is a little Chinese-American restaurant, which is always good for a little craving for Chinese food. I have been going to this place for many years, and for almost every birthday throughout my childhood. The employees are nice, as well as the people who own the restaurant. Good food and usually good service. We enjoy their tea but tonight at 6:15 after we had asked for more tea with our dinners we were told they were done making it for the night. I have never eaten inside but have gotten the food to go many times. Mom likes it. The dining room does look nice enough. The choices for Chinese food in Adrian are abysmal in my opinion but this is edible. No delivery, which is a tragedy. This is another of the standard Americanized Chinese food, white button mushrooms, canned bamboo shoots, ingredients are not really fresh nor interesting, overly sauced and under spiced but the prices aren't bad and the place seems clean. Gotta eat Chinese, this isn't a bad place in this town. How I miss New York, San Francisco. Maybe I'll go to Ann Arbor next time I need Chinese food. It may be worth it. read more

My rating would have been a 4-star rating until tonight. For five years, four friends have met at China Garden once monthly. We are so regular that the servers know what our favorite orders are. The servers are friendly and helpful. We have always felt welcomed, and we have enjoyed the food. The owner was recently a little difficult to reason with when there was an error made in checking out, accusing loyal customers of failure to pay rather than examining himself or his staff. Perhaps it was a bad night. Despite my initial inclination to boycott the restaurant, I do like to support local businesses and have for years been satisfied with service. I have changed this review to reflect a change of heart, and so I WILL some day try again and hope that this one experience will not turn out to be a new kind of business as usual. read more

I've been going here for the 15 years that I've lived in Adrian. The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is comfortable. I get the Almond Boneless Chicken every time and LOVE it. If you're looking for super authentic, cheap, unhealthy-feeling Chinese food that you get from little takeout places though, you won't find that here. You can do takeout, but it's definitely fancier than the cheap stuff. Still though, nice and delicious, especially for Adrian. read more

Worst restaurant experience I have ever had! Both our dishes were ordered spicy. When the food arrived both meals were cold and completely tasteless. We waited and told another waitress as ours had disappeared. She took our food back. A little while later our waitress returned with our food warmed and a dish of spices explaining that we would need to mix in what we wanted to our own food or she could have the cook do it but that would be a bother. We went and explained the problem to the owner who offered to remake the dishes. While we were talking to the owner the waitress cleared our table getting rid of our drinks. When she returned with our food, she began to make faces at us. No apologies, just faces. Food was better but we had been there an hour by the time it arrived.
