Kind of a weird experience...I overheard who I think is the owner of the place talking to a server about taking percentages of tips away from the servers! Um, excuse me, those are not for you. I pay probably a good markup for your ok food, and you probably make a good profit from that, I find it almost criminal that you take money away from the servers! Ridiculous. We recently been to Monterrey over the Mother's Day Weekend and decided to try this place out because I was referred by a Front Desk person at the hotel we were staying at. The place seemed close enough and was easy to find. The place was slightly busy for a Saturday night.(Prom night) But there was only 1 server, and 1 Busboy. We decided to start with an order the Hot Sour Soup and Fried Won tons. For our entrees we ordered the Chicken Chowmein, Chicken Fried Rice, Chicken Mushroom, and General Chicken. The soup was the best thing we ordered that night. Our Fried Rice was the last thing to come out of the kitchen. WTF? Shouldn't the Rice be the 1st entree to come out? By the time our food came out, there was only one table left, but the server seemed to be preoccupied with a couple of regular customers. The only female server had to be reminded twice to bring out the rice. We also had a Kid's meal/Beechnut container we needed to heat up since we didn't warm up it before we left. After she popped it in the microwave, we had to remind the server 3 times to grab it, but the busboy did finally get it for us. The server was not busy waiting on tables, but was talking to the regulars and not paying attention to the other tables. I strongly believe customers come first, but take care of your guests especially if they were there before your regulars show up. I would have given 2 stars for service, but the food was okay but not spectacular. Based on my experience, I will not frequent this place again. read more

This is one of the decent Chinese places in town where we didn't get sick from too. Not only that, the food is good! We love the chicken wings and fight over them all the time. The decor is very traditional looking and they have a cool train that circles around and entertains the kids. We come here frequently at least once a week. I have recommended this place to several friends already. Good customer service. They accidentally switched our orders once which wasn't a big deal but they offered to give us a complimentary dish anyway, which was a really nice gesture. read more

came here to mix it up -- i usually end up at krua thai, but i was craving chinese. they get a big thumbs up for their menu. there are a ton of chinese places in the area, but hardly any of them boast a menu the size of great wall's. i expected a little more. the fried asparagus appetizer was spot on, the singapore style noodles were well executed but a little pricey (although the portion was large), and the rainbow duck was mediocre at best (which broke my heart a little, because duck is so good when it's done correctly). read more

The food here is acceptable. I like that they've gone out of the way to make vegetarian potstickers; it's a thoughtful inclusion. Service was a little awkward and abrupt. We thought this place was pretty good. Hunan beef was a generous portion and very well spiced. Vegetables cooked perfectly. Wife had Hunan tofu and vegetables and enjoyed hers as well. Started with an egg flour soup on a cold night and it was awesome. Check back was a little late and they only served one water to us but they were polite and that goes a long way. The service here was great but I was less than thrilled with my food. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken and the chicken tasted terrible although the veggies were fresh. My friends tried the cashew chicken which was okay but mostly celery and the chow mein which was just okay. The spring rolls however were really good. "Meh" is right. The food wasn't bad and the delivery took an hour....which was the extreme limit of their estimation. The problem is the cost. If you are going to be one of the highest priced places in Monterey that sells Chinese food, then I expect your food to be near the best. It wasn't. I had the Orange chicken and my wife ordered the Mongolian beef. The real problem was how dry the food was....well, that and the lack of flavor. If it hadn't been 6pm when I ordered I would have sworn we were being served stuff that had sat on a heater for the day and was about to be thrown out before they closed. With so many better options in Monterey we won't be trying this place again. If you are desperate for Chinese, don't mind average flavor, and feel that overpaying is a good option, then this place is for you! read more

I am a fanatic when it comes to Chinese food. I used to live in LA and then I moved to the Bay Area. One of my friends recommended the Great Wall in Monterey. By far, this is the best Chinese Restaurant I have ever been to. Now, I make frequent trips down to Monterey just for their food. The food and the service was incredible. They have a large selection of vegetarian dishes and they don't put MSG in their food. They are even willing to make special orders to accommodate customers. Every time I go there, I try to try something new. Everything is delicious. They have a specials board up at the front door when you walk in. Amazing is an understatement for their specials. My favorite special is the Sizzling Asparagus Seafood. The prices are fair and not outrageous like other restaurants that jack up prices for tourists. A trip to Monterey to try their food is worth it. You can not go wrong with anything you order. It is unfathomable why anyone would want to go to any other Chinese restaurant in Monterey. read more

I love coming here for the lunch specials. When my wife and I can get away we share a couple different entrees and are set for the day with leftovers to take home. The food is delicous as well. I love their egg drop soup. It's one of my favorites in the whole Monterey area. The food is always pipping hot when it comes to the table. The service is lacking, but it's a small joint where there is sometimes a little bit of a language gap. Overall though a great place. read more

We've eaten in this restaurant and ordered take-out. In the last four of five times we have had their food it has been very good. The take-out order we had today was exceptional. It arrived no more than 30 minutes after we ordered it (don't live far from the restaurant) and everything tasted great. We ordered the traditional favorites of people who are not Chinese: sweet & sour chicken, chicken chow mien, steamed rice, and green beans. I have noticed that sometimes the service isn't so great, but it has never been so terrible as to impact our dinner. Wow, this is a very good restaurant. I had the green been chicken, Szechuan style. The other 2 dishes my family members ordered were beef chop suey and mixed vegetables, also Szechuan style. These also were delicious. Of course, I've had better Chinese food but this is one of the best Chinese restaurants I've eaten in. I've been coming to this restaurant for 15 years and the food has been excellent every time. I find that the meat in most Chinese restaurants tastes cheap and much like leftovers, not so here. It's been consistently good for all these years. I am a big fan of their Mongolian beef, so much so that I won't order it from other places. Prices are pretty cheap and portion size is large. I have been here many times and love this place. Very good food at very reasonable prices. My family and I usually get the same things generals chicken, beef and broccoli, chow mein, and moo shu chicken. Consistently good food. We have tried many Chinese places in town and this one is the best by far. We almost always go and pick it up, delivery takes too long, but pickup is always ready in ten minutes. If you choose to eat in the restaurant the service is always good, they have good hot tea, and the food is always really fresh. Not the greatest Chinese food that I have ever eaten, that was in Hong Kong at the floating restaurant, but very tasty food at very reasonable prices. We eat at Great Wall regularly, including on Christmas. The vegetarian options are good, with Spicy Singapore Rice Noodles with Egg in Curry Sauce and vegetarian spring rolls our go-to dinner (often with the egg flower soup). The menu overall is pretty extensive and the prices very reasonable. The servers are friendly and don't hover or rush you. The beer selection could be much better, especially with a boom in local and regional microbreweries, but that's not a deal breaker for us. The dining room is comfortable, and kids love it when the model train circles the room on its track overhead (we're not kids and we like it too). read more
