    Fried Won Wrapper-horrible!!
    Sheri M.

Back after a few years and ordered the fried won tons. To my amazement this piece of fried square dough was served. I have NEVER in my entire life seen fried won tons wrappers served. Menu just said "Fried Won Tons" they forgot to add the "wrappers". Disgusting When I asked her about it she said, "every restaurant is different".

Food was DISGUSTING! Egg flour soup had corn and zucchini. The egg foo young had some gelatinous gravy and the sweet and sour chicken was dried. Worst service and worst food I have ever eaten. If I could give this a zero I would. Food did not taste fresh. Chow mein noodles were thick and mushy. Do not eat here!

I love this place! Delicious fresh made to order Chinese food!! And I'm Chinese!! I know what's delicious!!!

I saw many rave reviews about this restaurant in a Monterey good eats Facebook group. Since most of the reviewers weren't Chinese, I didn't have high expectations. However, we happened to be nearby during our visit to Monterey yesterday and decided to give it a try. We ordered two dishes: string beans with pork (we asked them to add the pork) and Kung Pao chicken with chow mein. The string beans were excellent--the sauce was so flavorful! The pork was a little lean for my taste, but the dish overall was amazing. The Kung Pao chicken was solid, and the chow mein was fantastic! The best part is the price. Very inexpensive Out of the two, I'd say the string beans were my favorite. I'm looking forward to coming back and trying their Mongolian beef and special wonton soup next time!

Stopped in for lunch about 1:30, its a small place but we were able to get a table, started with hot tea, we both had egg flower soup, egg roll, sweet & sour pork, fried rice & kung po chicken, everything was great, service was good too, ive heard about this place & was finally able to check it out, we are glad we did

My boyfriends family has been coming to this spot for over 50 years now!! (Even with new owners. )the service is great family owned great people and they take good care of you. The place is nice and clean. Doesn't get to busy but since it's near downtown Monterey they could get busy and it's better to make a reservation specially with a bigger group. The food is Great every dish that comes out it feels like it gets better and better. I highly recommend taking a big group and enjoying each plate. The soups are great with a great taste on the broths. Parking can be tricky just because of the area but you still end up finding one.

Before new owners... garlic chicken with fried rice.

Under new ownership.... NO SIGNS OR NOTICE anywhere. Food is NOT the same Bland, no flavor no spice I had to ask if they were new owners after the food came out they said yes but again no notice of new ownership. . Same menus and plates I guess to fool us into thinking it's the same owners? We ordered 2 sweet & sour pork with steamed rice... tasted like orange pork? 2 garlic chicken with fried rice... see different pictures below.. Paid $65 for 4 "lunch specials" with $3 up charge for "fried rice" per lunch special Probably won't be going back after many many years of this being our go to spot. Will definitely miss the old owners.

Yes, and they are very friendly there so tip a tad extra ! :-) Even for take-out, I tip too because of all the prep work they do to get the meal bagged up and ensuring the order is correct. Enjoy your meal there !

I followed directions…read moreand it took me to a little patio tucked away next to a bank - there was an open door to a kitchen and the patio had two plastic tables and chairs. A waitress noticed me quickly and came to ask if had placed an order or needed to. They have a big menu! The lunch specials are amazing deals - a main course, with chow mein, fried rice, and soup! All for less than $15?! In this economy?? So I ordered the cashew chicken and a starter of cheese puffs (wanton). The food was all flavorful, the chow mein had a deliciously satisfying chew, the cheese puffs had a tangy cream cheese filling. I would say there wasn't an abundance of chicken - but there was a lot of other food to make up for it. Oh and complimentary hot green tea! I will definitely come back again!

Unfortunately, the chow mein was one of the worst I've had. It was mostly noodles with very little meat, and the meat that was included tasted old. I ended up throwing away at least half of it. Normally, I would have sent it back, but since it was a delivery order that wasn't practical. I had hoped to save some for leftovers, but the quality wasn't good enough to justify reheating. I also ordered two char siu baos, but after my experience with the rest of the meal, my expectations are pretty low. My biggest concern was the packaging. None of the food was sealed in any way. The chow mein container had popped open during transit and was handed to me already open. The other takeout container wasn't taped or sticker-sealed either, and the soup came in a plastic container with no seal at all. In my opinion, restaurants using delivery services should place tamper-evident stickers or tape on all containers. Food should not be arriving open or capable of popping open during delivery. The lack of sealing was concerning and did not inspire confidence. The soup was also only about half full, which made me wonder whether some had spilled during transit or if that was the intended portion size. Overall, the beef with broccoli was merely okay, the chow mein was very disappointing, and the packaging raised concerns. Based on this experience, I do not plan to order from or visit this restaurant again.

I was reared the son of a career Navy Chief who, with my mother, loved to travel in Asia. So we did, having lived in Hawaii, Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand and California. Consequently, my taste buds appreciate authentic Asian dishes. And one of my most favorite is Wor Won Ton Soup. A basic chicken broth with a won ton or two floating around is Won Ton Soup. Or broth with scramble egg in is is Egg Drop Soup. But the king of such soups is the vegetable dense Wor Won Ton Soup, and it is hard to find really good versions of this. My radar is on continual search. The China Palace Restaurant in Novato, CA doe have outstanding Wor Won Ton. When we visit with friends, we always order the large, punch bowl sized version and eat every last drop. So...staying overnight in Monterey our internet search came up with Chef Lee's, and to our delight, their menu listed Wor Won Ton. Reviews for his restaurant were excellent, so we made a dinner reservation. Chef Lee's is definitely CHINESE! Rich decorations and decor along with a multi-paged menu. And there it was at $19.50. Not as large as a punch bowl, but sufficient for three servings. We also ordered pork pot stickers at $14.95. And talking with our server, Bao Y. found another of my favorites, BBQ pork chow mien Hong Kong style at $17.95. They list it as made with chicken, but did a special for us substituting pork for the chicken. Pots of hot tea and we were set. It all was great, food, service and atmosphere. Highly recommend you try it out. As to the War Won Ton: is was close, but was not as rich as in Novato or what I was looking for. Please do try it with this in mind and if you like it, join me in my search for the best.

The mandarin fried chicken is supposed to be extra spicy, yet it barely had any flavor at all. The noodles in the chow mein were all two to three inches long, it was like theydid that on purpose, and there was absolutely no flavor. The fried rice looked like white rice tossed with frozen vegetables, and like everything else NO FLAVOR. These four items cost me $83 and some change. I have been going there for years. This will be my family's last time. Yuck

I'm happy to say that now there is a decent asian place that we can drop by if we have a craving or if we are bringing overseas friends to the aquarium. Very clean interiors, you seat yourself and order at the counter. We had the beef noodle soup, veggie noodle soup, and the XLB. The beef noodle soup was mostly soy sauce based, not too salty, just the right amount of savoring. The meat was not beef shank, but a leaner cut with less connective tissue so don't expect any chewy tendons. And the noodles were cooked with just the right chew. XLB was only okay. Not terrible but not something I would order again. Overall decent, and for Monterey standards definitely a 4 out of 5. Obviously cannot compare to beef noodle shops in the south bay, but this will do if you are spending a day touring the local area and have the craving for noodle soup. No free water here by the way, you'll have to buy a bottle of water at the front counter so plan accordingly.

The Pad Thai was definitely the highlight, perfectly cooked noodles coated in a rich, balanced sauce, and the beef was tender and flavorful. You really can't go wrong with it. The Panang Curry was also very enjoyable. The curry itself was creamy and full-bodied, and pairing it with rice really brought out the depth of flavor. I ordered it with chicken, which was good, but I do wish there had been a bit more of it. The Tom Kah Kai was incredibly rich and aromatic. The broth had a deep, comforting flavor, and the mushrooms were surprisingly the star, soaking up the soup and adding an extra layer of umami that made each bite better than the last. Service was fast and attentive, with the staff consistently checking in and keeping water filled, which I appreciated. The ambiance had a nice, authentic feel that really complemented the meal and made the whole experience more immersive.
