I would love to revisit this restaurant in near future. I was not expecting the food to be so good and price very reasonable. Me and my family came for a short trip Monterey Bay and as it was lunch time we were not aware of any restaurants. We just saw it on our way and being a Chinese food lover stopped our car just outside the restaurant and tried our luck. The restaurant was quit spacious and clean. They also have a space for some special occasions or banquet. I came here along with my 4 yr old kid. After settling down we order for dishes for lunch. Back after a few years and ordered the fried won tons. To my amazement this piece of fried square dough was served. I have NEVER in my entire life seen fried won tons wrappers served. The best pork egg foo yung with brown gravy, loads of sprouts and pork. Ordered the pork fried rice again and it was outstanding. It's all about finding, what they do best! We tried Chong's yesterday - it was pretty good (the atmosphere is Hole-In-The-Wall but we're OK with that...). Loved the Szechuan Beef - delicious sauce and served with lots of fresh, crisp green beans. The Salt & Pepper Shrimp were delicious but way too spicy hot for me - I will order them again "less spicy please". The soup that came with the lunch plate was very good (kind of like egg drop with corn and tofu), the Chow Mein upgrade on my lunch plate was OK but didn't have much besides the noodles and a few (and I mean few) token grated carrot bits. The special Won Ton Soup was OK - there was lots of yummy things in it besides the wonton dumplings - chicken, BBQ pork, shrimp and vegetables but I've had better - the broth needed to percolate a little bit more. This place is legit. They rebranded as Chong's Cafe which is more accurate than Sichuan because that ... it is not. This is Cantonese style Chinese food and they did a great job. As a non-pork eater and lover of wonton soup, I deeply appreciated the chicken wonton option. It was hearty, filling, and perfect for a chilly night. The chicken fried rice was remarkably good. I find most places really bland. My friend really enjoyed her egg drop soup and my little gobbled up his friend dumplings. We ordered takeout and it was easy to park and grab the food. read more

All of them did not compare to Chongs. Went to lunch there yesterday. So good I have to say. I am a Chongs fan again. I guess I went in on an off day. And Michelle the server so good. I saw many rave reviews about this restaurant in a Monterey good eats Facebook group. Since most of the reviewers weren't Chinese, I didn't have high expectations. However, we happened to be nearby during our visit to Monterey yesterday and decided to give it a try. We ordered two dishes: string beans with pork (we asked them to add the pork) and Kung Pao chicken with chow mein. The string beans were excellent--the sauce was so flavorful! The pork was a little lean for my taste, but the dish overall was amazing. The Kung Pao chicken was solid, and the chow mein was fantastic! The best part is the price. Very inexpensive Out of the two, I'd say the string beans were my favorite. I'm looking forward to coming back and trying their Mongolian beef and special wonton soup next time! read more

My boyfriends family has been coming to this spot for over 50 years now!! (Even with new owners. )the service is great family owned great people and they take good care of you. The place is nice and clean. Doesn't get to busy but since it's near downtown Monterey they could get busy and it's better to make a reservation specially with a bigger group. The food is Great every dish that comes out it feels like it gets better and better. I highly recommend taking a big group and enjoying each plate. The soups are great with a great taste on the broths. Parking can be tricky just because of the area but you still end up finding one. read more

Yes, they have new owners for a year or so. I can only review the special noodle/won ton soup since this is my favorite dish here. I requested it with mushrooms and broccoli instead of bok choy, so you decide which you prefer. The broth is so good, it feeds 2 adults as the main meal. The interior is cleaner and the staff is friendly, especially Michelle who has worked here for years. If you want a good chicken noodle soup this is your place! read more

I've been going to Chong's for over 25 years! I hadn't been in for a while and wasn't sure what to expect but everything was delicious, and it was great to see some of the same friendly wait staff after so many years. The sizzling rice soup came in a delicious and delicate brown broth (much better than the clear, oily broth you get at so many places). The chow fun was cooked and seasoned perfectly, and the Mongolian beef is the best I've had in town. Everything had 'from scratch' flavor and was served up hot. The place looks very much the same as it always has - very casual old school diner vibe. The dining room was clean and tidy. It was nice to see koi fish swimming in the old lobster tanks that sat empty for so long. All in all, me and my family really enjoyed our time here. I'm so disappointed! I've been on the peninsula 25 years and this used to be an awesome go-to Chinese restaurant. After they changed hands, I went in and got my favorite entrée and it was completely different and not very good. I decided to give them another try... the potstickers were horrible and I mean absolutely ordered from a bag and obviously very low quality frozen stuff. Then I open the box of orange chicken and it looked like something from panda express... that's actually going too far, panda express would've been better. The chicken was so overdone that there was nothing inside the oily battered shell except hard crispy pieces of what once was chicken. I am greatly disappointed in what the new owners have done and I would advise them to try to bring back the food how it once was done. read more

When the new owners took over the food was either too salty or very bland. It's been a few months, so I tried it again. It was delicious. They must have worked out their kinks. I was a bit confused as it seems this place has two different names. In person the actual restaurant sign says Chongs Cafe, whereas online it says Chongs Szechwan Restaurant. After going inside I decided to get the lunch special of sweet and sour chicken over rice (you get choice of fried or steamed rice). First things first, I give this place major props for having Lunch specials on weekends since it seems almost every other Chinese place in the monterey bay area seems to not do the same thing and only has those specials Monday through Friday. As far as the dish goes the sweet and sour chicken had a good balance, not too sweet, not too sour. The white rice was good quality, not dry or overly sticky. As the menu states if you take it "to go" you miss out on side soup. Solid meal but I wish they had a Orange chicken lunch special but it seems you can only order that type of chicken "a la carte".
