We ordered from here for the first time on New Year's Eve and did pickup. The food was ready in about 15 minutes, which was impressive for a holiday, and everything was piping hot and fresh when we got it home. We ordered a wide variety: pork potstickers, veggie egg rolls, crab rangoons, a small hot and sour soup, General Tso's chicken, orange chicken, chicken fried rice, beef chow mein, and honey wall chicken wings. Overall, the food was good for classic Chinese takeout, though the flavors were on the mild side. We're originally from South Louisiana where food is very well seasoned, so this may come down to personal taste (and California tending to have a lighter seasoning style). Even so, the seasoning could have been a little stronger across the board. Spice-wise, everything was extremely mild--our six-year-old could eat everything easily. Next time, I'd probably skip the hot and sour soup (I've had better elsewhere) and the fried rice. The rice had way too many peas and not enough carrots, and the ratio felt off. That said, this is still the best Chinese food we've had in Monterey by far. It doesn't even compare to the other places we've tried, and we'll definitely be ordering again--just knowing to ask for extra seasoning or spice. read more

Fond memories of the Great Wall Chinese restaurant. I worked next door in the Pacific Bell business office as a Service Representative. I remember many business lunch meetings "brainstorming" strategies with my team manager Erin Miller. "Show Me The Money" was our team motto for the office. I came here around 7 p.m. on a Sunday, and we were able to get seated quickly. We ordered the spring rolls, savory glazed tofu, and the chow mein, all of which were super yummy. The most bland Chinese food I've ever tasted. No flavor at all. Just oil and vegetables. They don't give much meat either. Avoid.

Even though it got a little mushy, my favorite dish was Singapore rice noodles because the beef had a mild heat/spice. Good use of five spice seasoning here. I ordered BBQ pork buns and chicken fried rice (underseasoned) for takeaway, but we went to a different restaurant by mistake. Kung pao beef, Mongolian beef, and shrimp shumai were ready in 20 minutes. This business was directly across the road from our hotel when we stayed in Monterey recently, and i had a hankering for some Chinese. It's nicely appointed inside, spacious, and it wasn't very full when we went inside. We were given a booth by the window, and drink orders taken. I opted for Beef Chow Mein, husband wanted Egg Drop Soup. Apparently, rice is not included with dishes, but it didn't count anyway for what we were ordering. The prices are good here, so ordering rice separately would not have been a problem. Husband had wanted to do family style, but i really dislike that. I'm English, and it was never a thing there. My Beef Chow Mein was superb, one of the best I've had, plentiful, super-tender strips of beef, not at all fatty (I hate fat) lovely noodles and bean sprouts there was also cabbage. It was SO good, i was overeating. He ordered a small bowl of soup, but I'm not kidding, the bowl was enormous. I ate maybe 2/3 of my Chow Mein, and offered it to him to try, and said I'd have a taste of his soup. That Egg Drop Soup was also the best I've tasted. Seasoned to perfection, tiny pieces of onion, so good. I only wanted a spoonful, ended up eating about a dozen spoonfuls. I often find that Egg Drop Soup seems somewhat gelatinous, this wasn't like that, but i know it was delicious. The prices were excellent, so great value for money. Service too, was fast and efficient. Something to note, when we went in and sat down, the door of the restaurant had been left open to catch the evening breeze. What "breezed" through the restaurant, was a potent, and eye-watering blast of marijuana. It stunk. The Host was on it immediately, demanding to know "Are you smoking?" To all the booths down our side, which i admire greatly, actually. I'm glad he asked, as it did stink. Conceivably, it could have come from outside, so he closed the door for 5 minutes, until the smell dissipated. I would 100% return to this restaurant. Tried every Chinese restaurant in the Monterey/Seaside area and this is my favorite. They have a good deal where you can get 2 entrees , low mein, and a spring roll for about $25. Perfect for me and my girlfriend to share. The generals and orange chicken is good, not spectacular, but the Mongolian beef is the best Mongolian beef I've ever had. Would recommend. read more

We are new to the area and are searching for our go to Chinese restaurant. This might be it! The ambiance is pleasant, the service is friendly and the food is really good. We got Salt/Pepper Shrimp (no shell), Szechuan Beef and another dish I can't remember because my husband ate all of it...the lunch specials come with a tasty soup. The fried rice/chow mein that comes with the lunch specials are OK - I would like more vegetables in those dishes but they were fine. They were open on Thanksgiving 2024 so you thought we'd give them a try. Their menu is somewhat limited and their a little pricy but the food was good. I had a medium Wor Wonton soup for 18.80. Their Wontons taste house made. I really enjoyed them. My friend had their combination Chow Fun. It was also very good, lots of flavor. I don't like that they don't offer any combination plates, everything is an individual order. We'll be back to try other things. read more

So, I went here with a group of my friends and we were celebrating a bachelor party. This review is a mixed bag because when our group got there, the service was actually really great! The young gentleman who was helping out was really polite, helpful, guided us through the menu and gave us excellent recommendations! We wanted to leave our waiter a tip, however, the service went south towards the end of our time there. This is not the fault of the gentleman who was helping us in the beginning but actually the fault of a DIFFERENT waiter who brought us our checks at the end. He asked us what we were doing there and we explained we were just celebrating our friend. To our horror, this guy went on a whole monologue detailing his own highly inappropriate experience with a bachelor trip. He started talking about how he used substances on a bachelor trip that he was on and about women (specifically mentioning very work-inappropriate things). We told him we weren't about that life, and his whole demeanor changed. People got different work cultures so, we all laughed it off awkwardly. We would have just led it slide, however, this changed when we got our checks. This second waiter ended up mixing all of our cards and charging us on the wrong accounts. I ended up paying for one of my friends and they ended up paying for mines. So it was frustrating at just that, but on TOP OF THAT, they actually ended up charging one of our cards TWICE, which we now have to go to our bank to dispute. I have no idea if this guy did this on purpose to ruin our evening but it left us with a very garbage experience to what would have otherwise been a great evening. Saying inappropriate and appalling things in the workplace is diabolical in it of itself, however, illustrating such incompetence on this level, shows that this man is unfit for his position and did not deserve any tip whatsoever. If the first gentleman happens to read this, thank you for being such a great waiter. We apologize, we wanted to tip you directly but had no cash and unfortunately had to put 0 on our checks because we did not want a single dollar going to this second waiter who left us with such a foul taste in our mouths from this poor experience. read more

The Mapo Tofu is amazing! The tofu is perfectly cooked, and the shiitake mushrooms add great flavor. The peas and carrots are a nice touch too. If you dine in during lunch they will give you egg Flower soup. service is fast , friendly , very clean. Parking is easy available. read more
