The food court inside Great Wall Supermarket used to be one of the best hidden gems in town. Every stall had something special, steaming baskets of dim sum, sizzling stir-fries, rich noodle soups, fresh BBQ pork, and perfectly crisp scallion pancakes. It was the kind of place where you could wander with a tray, try a little of everything, and always leave happy (and full). Beyond the food, it had an atmosphere you don't find often anymore: a casual bustle, families sharing dishes, shoppers taking a break from the aisles, everyone drawn together by the smells and flavors. That's why it was such a loss when the owner closed it down. The whole community misses the variety, the warmth, and the incredible value the food court offered. It wasn't just a spot to grab a bite, it was part of our weekend routine, a place to bring visiting friends, a taste of home for many. Thank you to everyone who ran the food court for all those years. Your hard work and hospitality made Great Wall more than a supermarket; you made it a gathering place. GW MARKET is my go to when I want to make homemade pho or other Cuisines. Unlike the main grocery stores they carry a variety of fruits and produce which are a lot less. Their herbs like Basil and rosemary is a lot bigger and more in quantity than what you would get at Giant. They carry a lot of different types of meats and seafoods seafood. And their aisles carry a lot of different ethnic products from around the world. This location is a lot better than Rockville...(where Jeepers used to be) read more

The supermarket is super clean and sells every and anything one can think of including exotic (to me) foods from black chicken to dried mushrooms to geoducks! Other fresh seafood included lobster, reasonable prices stone crab ($3.99 a pound is the same as t home in Newport, RI), Dungeness crab, lobster, and - to my surprise - a tank full of fresh frogs which I wives witnessed the demise of (well, four anyway)! The workers in the seafood department were on their a-game! A beautiful store that I will come back to for sure. read more

Yesterday I bought a box of duck feet in germantown at Great Wall . It smelled bad and sticky. It spend me $22 for nothing . I don't recommend to buy products in the freezer . Went to this Great Wall location today and noticed a mouse running around the produce section. Cleanliness is clearly lacking.

I bought everything I wanted for less than $40 today at this Great Wall. Dashi broth, 3 bags of bean sprouts, 4 boxes of tofu, 1 bunch of chives, ramen and some other stuff. Unlike the Great Wall in Rockville, parking was easy and best of all, IT WAS UNCHAOTIC AND PEACEFUL. Like whoa! Good value, quiet, clean, and no line for checkout? Check check and check. My experience at GW Supermarket was okay. I disliked how cold it was in the store and was not too impressed with the quality of the produce. The oranges I was initially interested in were the large CA Navel oranges 3/$2.99, but they were all too soft. I felt that they would not have lasted more than a few days at home and that they would spoil too soon. The variety of the produce was great, but I had some issues with the quality. On the bright side, the parking lot was fairly calm (I only witnessed one honk were a car almost backed up into another car trying to back up, as well) and like another Yelper mentioned, the line at the register was short. read more

This store has a lot of vegetables, fruits, and international food and drinks that other stores don't carry. The prices are generally much cheaper than at Giant, Safeway, Harris Teeter, but these aren't really comparable grocery stores. I didn't get why they were playing loud rap music with the f word and n word, which made grocery shopping a bit... unusual. The checkout area is so full of merchandise that I feel like it's a fire hazard. There's a $5 minimum for credit card transactions. read more

This is a solidly good Asian market. It's pretty big & it carriers all kinds of fresh, canned & packaged Asian foods. Their produce, meat, seafood is very fresh & extensive also. They have a frozen section & a Deli counter with roast meats & poultry & some made to order drinks & food. It was very clean & did not have any odor. It was also a bit chilly so make sure you bring a sweatshirt or coat. I was looking for a 4 cup metal teapot with lid & unfortunately they had every kind of teapot except that. LOL. Anyway. I come here mainly for the fresh Asian veggies & fruits, some of which you won't find at other grocery stores, but they also carry everything else you'd expect to find in a supermarket - poultry, seafood, dried goods, etc. There's a scrumptious cafeteria-style food court in the back corner we'd go to for a quick dinner in between shopping. Would recommend the baos, beef noodle soup, or the more customized 3+1 soup combo meal! Tip: Check the expiration dates of sale items. Great Wall Supermarket is an international supermarket that have locatoins in NY, VA, GA, and MD - they opened back in April of this year, so this location is still looking pretty spankin' new. Everything is neatly laid out and organized; fresh fruits and produce, canned food, meats, a selection in fish cake in the freezer aisle in the back, dried goods, household items, as well as a nice collection of international snacks. There were some good sales and deals going on as well, and nice little gift tin boxes of moon cakes and other desserts available. Plenty of check-out aisles so the lines kept on moving and everything was efficient. You can check their website to see any specials for the week. I can't help comparing this with Super Best in Laurel, another big box international market. Maybe like Food Lion to Wegman's? Well lit, cheerful music, clean. Equally huge selection of vegetables and flavorings. Larger meat section. A case full of freshly roasted ducks. Big seafood section, with live tanks as well as good looking whole fish on ice. Live crayfish, lobsters, and blue crabs. Very moderate prices on those items where I could compare - hope they are not all grand opening specials! Often visit this grocery store from time to time. During busy times, the parking lot can be pretty full, but it's a huge lot, so don't have too much of a hard time finding a spot. It is near BonChon and Dunkin Donuts along with some other joints in the shopping strip. Nice Asian store that has many of the food items in stock, tons of produce and ingredients for cooking. They have some fresh fish, seafood and meats in stock. Pork Belly is tasty, Chicken Tenderloins and Korean Volcano Ramen are always there to purchase! A huge Ramen aisle inside with various flavors, a frozen food section and a cafe at the back. Decent sized store. read more

Definitely enjoy this supermarket! They have a wide variety of Chinese greens. They also have a BBQ station in the back that sells BBQ pork and roasted duck. They supermarket offers a lot of dried goods/pantry items. They also have a live seafood section in the back. This is one of best Chinese supermarket store for the Northern part of Montgomery County. It is more spacious, brightly lit, cleaner and MUCH less crowded than its Rockville counterpart. The prices are decent, in some cases cheaper than the Rockville location, and the food in general are pretty fresh. 1 star off because many of the discounts require you to buy in bulk. So they might have something like 2 for $8 but if you buy only 1, it'll be more than $4. Furthermore for some perishables, check the expiration if there is a discount. Recently on July 30 they had a sale for their restaurant tofu with 2 cartons for $7. Not only did they require you to buy 2 to take advantage of it, upon looking at the expiration date (I checked because I've never seen them discount the restaurant tofu), it was August 4. Upon checkout, if there are lines at every cashier, head straight to the customer service desk and checkout there. The guy manning the desk is usually doing nothing and won't be pleased he has to move his bones to help you but it'll save you a ton of time. Finally if you need help finding something, if the guy at the customer service desk is unhelpful, ask one of the workers for help. read more

This store is on the busy Rockville Pike and we were quite surprised by its roomy interiors considering its modest entrance and parking. The store has a bit of everything from fresh produce to canned goods to electric appliances. The service is indifferent but the prices reasonable. We had been searching for quite some time for fresh tofu and this, as far as I know, is the only store in MD area to sell it. One has to a look long and hard as the fresh tofu bin is hidden way in the extreme corner of the store. But at 50 cents a piece the price is very reasonable read more

If I could give it a zero I 100% would. Every time I go into Great Wall to get mochi they're way too frozen like they've been in the fridge for over a year. Not only is the Mochi messed up but it's still frozen and it tastes like you're eating plastic. It's supposed to be soft. These are not edible. read more

I am LITERALLY looking at the website on Bing as I type this review. My son went there--25 miles each way--to buy some Chinese herbal pills this evening. According to Bing, THEY CLOSE AT 10 PM. I called earlier in the day to confirm that they had the capsules. They did. I commented that "my son would be sure to arrive before 10 PM tonight." At NO TIME did anyone tell me that they close at 9. My son arrived at 9:02 PM--literally. He called me and told me that the store is closed. I called the store and an EXTREMELY unhelpful man answered who a) could not care less that my son wasted a 50 mile round trip b) my dog has a nose that is bleeding and he needs the capsules and c) that online listed the hours until 10 PM. When I asked if he was prepared to take a negative review due to his INCREDIBLE lack of desire to help and honor the posted hours, he told me he didn't care. I asked for his name so that I could ID him by name and he refused to tell me. I asked if he was refusing to give me his name and he said yes, that was correct--he was refusing to give it to me. I am posting this on Google, Yelp, the corporate page AND their FB page and, hell, I might even tweet about it, too. They overcharged us for an item, and when we went to ask for a refund of the difference with the receipt, the guy at CS was extremely rude and threw the Chinese equivalent of F-bombs and other extremely offensive curse words at my 60 year old mother, repeatedly! I LOVE this location! It's clean, well organized and very easy to navigate. For Asian produce that I can't find in my typical Safeway or Whole Foods, I come here for. Their produce is the freshest compared to most of the Asian stores in the area. They also carry a great supply of Filipino and rare Japanese goodies! Prices are good - standard. For an Asian/Chinese market, this is my go to place for several reasons. First, it's clean. It's as clean as an American chain grocery store, like a Giant or Safeway. For an Asian market to be as neat and tidy as those, that's saying something. Things are where they should be. Floors are constantly swept, especially around the produce areas. Produce is nicely stocked and presented. Aisles are decently spacious. Second, it's cheap. I'm sure many if not all know that if you want produce, go to an Asian market. You can easily save yourself a good $10 to $20 dollars if you're buying fruit and veggies than say Wegmans. But, if you're an organic health nut, this may not suit you. But, Whole Foods definitely won't have the same quantity of selection for Asian veggies. Third, it's not crowded. Errr, as crowded. This makes getting in and out fast and efficient. This location has been here for a while now and it still seems as though everyone wants to go to Rockville's location instead, which is fine with me. The parking isn't as expansive but there's usually no problem finding a spot. read more

I am seriously blown away from this Great Wall. This is probably the most impressive Asian grocery store I've seen in the DMV to date. After having a delicious dinner at Yaraku sushi located in the same shopping centern(a pho, Indian, and Korean BBQ restaurants are also conveniently located in this ethnically diverse shopping center). All the green produce looked like perfection. Their produce selection were all fresh and they had amazing sales. 1.99 for pint of blueberries, 2 for $1.50 baby cantaloupes, $.99 mushroom, 2/$3 for two dozen eggs. The produce all looked fresh! They don't sell moldy, about to expire things here like I've seen at other Asian grocery stores. I realized when they have sales where you have to buy multiple items, such as 3 for $10 on packages of dumplings. You actually must buy ALL three to qualify for the discount. They had a huge selection of dumplings that find an entire long aisle (split into two section!) I was looking for Korean style dumplings but I noticed the emphasis in this store is Chinese products. I did manage to get my seaweed, miso paste, and red pepper paste though! This is also the first store I've seen to have life frogs, eels, and turtles for sale. There is a pretty tank area for live fish. They sale live crawfish too. Very very impressed with their fish selection as well, except they had already closed up the fish department when I was there an hour within closing. The place is very clean, spacious, brightly lit, ample room in aisles. Definitely recommend a visit if you're in the area to stock up on some Asian goodies! read more

Much better than the Rockville location. It's much cleaner and is a bit less crowded, though there are a few tips to excel your shopping experience: - Get the produce but skip the fruit section. The fruit section may be cheaper than your traditional grocery store, but they have a tendency to go bad a lot sooner. Only get fruit if you plan on enjoying them within 2 days. - Watch the expiration date (or lack of). One of my biggest complaints about Asian grocery stores (not just Great Wall) is they carry canned goods, snacks and pre-packaged goods with no expiration dates. If you plan on cooking it, you should be okay. But skip the eggs and anything with no dates. - Seafood and red meat is a hit or miss. Sometimes they have some of the freshest seafood and red meat, and sometimes they have sat for far too long. Look for the right color and complexion. - Enjoy Yuraku or Honeypig, which are in the same area. Shopping while hungry is indeed dangerous. read more

Can be a good place for Asian goods, but make sure you check the expiration dates on things. Several times, I've brought canned goods back just to notice they are expired. They just put expired things on sale to clear inventory and the employees ignore your attempts to tell them. You tell them and a few weeks you come back and they are still expired on the shelf. I usually go to 99 Ranch Market which is closer and more convenient. So I have not been to this market for many months now. But today's experience made a bad impression on me. First it's the people. The employees working on the groceries aisles do not respect customer's space and it's impossible to keep 6ft from them. Also a lot of customers, especially some groups, just walk around, some hand-in-hand, walking by and pass by people without respecting other customers. I'm worried about both customers and your employees' Health. Please respect the social distance rule! Second, service is almost nonexistent! I walked around meat section twice and it seemed that nobody was around willing to help. Maybe this is not a good sign that this store may be in some kinds of trouble? It may be a pity because it used to be my favorite store as the other Great Wall Market in Rockville is usually too crowded and is a little more expensive. PS: I went back to the store a few days later at night , an hour before closing time. I had a much better experience. Much less people. There are enough people in the meat and fresh seafood department ready to help customers. One guy in the meat department even taught me how to properly wear the mask with metal bar on top. There are lots of choices in shelf and in store. They even sale all kinds of face masks at the entrance with much better price than Target or Walmart! The supermarket section is clean and bright. The meat and seafood selection is plentiful and prices are competitive with other local markets. The food court was ok. For $5.99, you get three entree selections with rice. Not sure what it was, but the food tasted different than your typical Chinese-American fare. Another shopper recommended the lechon style pig so might have to try. Would not be on the top of my list for eating out though. read more

I'm writing a complaint regarding the Great Wall Supermarket located in Germantown, MD. On two separate occasion I have been both insulted and faced racism by the Great Wall Supermarket employee. Most recently, I was there on Monday 10/21/19 around 2:30pm. In this incident I was insulted by a particular staff handling seafood/fish. I handed him my purchase of fresh crabs and asked him to provide me 2lbs of shrimps. Each time I had to interact him, he gave me a mean cold stare and said "ching chong chong". He even turned to his coworker, spoke in their Spanish language, and said "ching chong chong". They both then laughed. One other incident he insulted my hair, because I had it piled in a bun on top of my head. He asked if I was okay, because my hair didn't look okay. Both times I surveyed the market, but did not see a store manager to file a complaint. I live nearby, and both my family and friends choose to shop at GW Supermarket over other local Asian groceries. My girlfriend has shared with me that the same employee that has treated me wrongly also tends to be rude with her when she goes grocery there. I hope the Germantown, MD GW Supermarket store manager will re-evaluate their hire and re-train their staff to respect patrons that frequently shop at that particular branch. I love that grocery store, but I was just harassed by the men working in the fish aisle. It happens every time but now that there's less people around they do it even more. I was there for maybe 2 minutes and the whole time the men were whistling at me and making inappropriate comments. I was very uncomfortable and disturbing. If the store manager is reading this then I hope you take this seriously and train them to behave themselves around women. But all the other employees are nice and helpful tho.
