I was looking for prepackaged Seaweed salad, Gimpap (Korean sushi) no luck. However their restaurant is a hidden gem. Still the same . Their JapchaeBap was delicious... I had no left overs. Glad they updated the front and rearranged the aisles and overall flow inside. The grocery store is your typical Korean grocery store. It has a good selection of produce and cuts of meat but not as much with the high end organic or grass fed beef. All the other essentials, spices, etc. are all very affordable. The main reason for this review is the catering and restaurant portion of the grocery store. The prices are great and the food is excellent. Pick-up, even during the holidays, is so easy and efficient. The woman in charge has a handle on that entire kitchen and each order. She is extremely nice and just gets things done. I have been picking up for our family for years and I wouldn't want to go anywhere else. The only small issue is the amount of traffic right in front of the door, but I'm also picking up during the busiest times of the year. read more

On December 17th, I went to buy groceries and accidentally left a bag containing four squid behind. I went back to the store and explained the situation, and they thoroughly checked the CCTV footage and helped me find it. I didn't expect them to find it, but thanks to the Korean woman who was the cashier at the time, the grocery manager OK SUN LEE, and the Spanish-speaking employee Mr. NOE who helped with the CCTV footage, I was able to get my bag back. This store is great. The produce is fresh, cheaper than Harris Teeter or Whole Foods and varied. You can find coconut, cactus or fresh herbs. There are dozens of rice choices. There is even a rice cooker for one (over $100). The household section has ramekins, rice bowls, utensils, and great kitchen gadgets. The tea section is wonderful. The meat section has tons of fresh fish and other choices. The employees take extra time to meticulously wrap and package the meat. I enjoyed looking at curry options (spices, cubes or packages). There are so many oils, soy sauce bottles and noodles. The restaurant has goat and several meal choices. Entrees start at $10 "ish" dollars. I came here yesterday to pick up some Asian produce. It was a surprise to see that it is more accurately described as Hispanic Korner now. There was exactly zero leafy green vegetables available - nothing. As far as the non-produce sections, they still do have all your asian food basics, often intermingled with Hispanic foods of the same category (snacks for instance). Today was my worst day here after many years of shopping. Long time shopper. 10 years. My wife even longer, 15+ years. Korean Korner has been around for a long time, before many of the Lotte and HMarts were around. Overall an extremely positive experience until today. They don't deserve a one star for messing up one time but I must say my piece today. Korean Korner has it all. Readily made kimchi and marinated meats are it's highlight. Everyone knows that they excel in making delicious food, premade or ready to order from their restaurant. But in 2020, something changed. Our favorite, the beef boneless short rib or galbi is the best and most pricey meat there. It costs 19.99/lb in 2020 and I have been buying it since 2010. Because it's magnificent. Cheaper and better than the restaurant. For holidays and birthdays, I buy it twice a year no matter the drive. My birthday is September 10th and I drove an hour to get it this year. But today, September 12, 2020. I tasted something new in the meat, fabuloso, the cleaning detergent. My thinking is that they really cleaned the tubs due to COVID-19 and that the meat sits and and it marinated. And they used this fabuloso cleaner in it. Today, I tasted the cleaner in every other bite. My wife realized it first and she called them in the middle of my birthday dinner to tell them about it. If we bring it, I will drive another 100 mile/ 2hr+ round trip and best case is I get my 61 dollars back. So let's call them and warn them at least. Their response was to bring it to their butcher department to have them taste and check it out because they have never heard such a ridiculous complaint. Their attitude was that they didn't believe us and we explained that we live so far that we aren't trying to get a refund. We had eaten a 1/3 of it, spit out the other 1/3 and did not cook the other 1/3. But they need to know that the batch is bad. They don't deserve a low rating after so many years of great service. But there needs to be a record of this experience. If you also taste fabuloso in your meat from Korean Korner, then please call and let them know. You can also reference this review as someone else who has the same experience. There is a 24hr return window for this meat but I will lose that much in the drive between gas used and time spent to do so. Don't let this tarnish their reputation as I have been nothing but pleased every time. However if nothing is done to remedy this, there will be more disappointing experiences and someone could get sick from this. I hope Korean Korner takes the call we made seriously. read more

I have been to countless korean megamart and this nothing like other stores.. 5 stars for the staff who are essential workers First of all there is that plangent smell as you enter the store. secondly the aisles are strangley pretty small and the structure of the store is just weird and strange very unorganized, it seems like a maze.. Fruits and veggies arent very fresh ,there are lots if fallen leaves and other stuff on the floor, the lightings arent very good. The energy of the store isnt good. As soon as you walk in you immediately feel something isnt pleasant there.. I personally didnt have bad experience there cuz i found what i was going for, i like how they have alcohol section, asian food and African food section.. There is also a small cafeteria inside the store with small menu and tables... One good thing in this store is that prices are very good..you could find lots of good deals on many items.. It's been a while since I shopped here. But I have always liked their catering. Well, it's usually because my friend brings the dumplings (gunmandu), kimbab or japchae to pot lucks. This was my first time ordering from the catering section of the grocery store. We came in on Sunday afternoon to order but the chef was not there. Everyone seemed busy and when someone finally approached, we were greeted in Korean. The staff asked me to leave my name and number and someone will call me the next day. I always doubt that and thought I would have to call but someone did. As soon as I answered, the person on the other line started to speak to me in Korean. Unfortunately, I don't speak Korean. So I immediately informed them and we continued on in English though with a little difficulty which was why I went into the store personally the other day. The prices are very reasonable and now I know why my friend keeps coming back here to place her orders. When I arrived, I saw some trays of the items that I ordered and patiently waited for someone to tell me it was okay to go ahead and take the items. They never verified my identity and just gave me the trays. As I was walking through the parking lot, someone chased me down because they forgot to get me to sign the credit card receipt. I love how they were so "trusting." Anyway, their food did not disappoint. I will definitely be back for more. I just hate the parking. Now I remember why I don't come as often. The parking is horrendous. Not enough spaces and the existing spaces are tight. There is also too much traffic. Oh, but the food is good. read more

I was skeptical about visiting Korean Korner. The parking lot is always a nightmare and I have always been confused how they sell alcohol. Since I was in the area I figured I would give it a shot. Just as I remembered the parking lot was a mess. I'm surprised there are not more accidents happening here. After we grabbed a parking spot we soon found ourselves in a sea of people. Once inside I noticed that Korean Korner is small, In comparison to Lotte or H-Mart (heck even New York Mart is bigger). I continued throughout the store and noticed slight price increases Vs. My normal Asian market. I also found the fish smell towards the back to be down right bad! As someone who has been shopping in global markets since I was little I'm familiar with the smells but the fish smell here was so overpowering. As previous reviews stated this market is home to several other types of food, not just Korean. There were plenty of Latino and Indian options which is welcoming, but I found the isles to be cramped and not labeled very well. The other downside is the frozen section, there's not a big section and I left knowing I needed to stop by H-Mart or Lotte on the way home (I actually heard other customers stating the same thing). The major downsides are (1) the cramped aisles; (3) expired products; and (3) the wafting odor of decay like the benjo ditches in Japan that hits as you enter the store. I am sad for those who shopped here and give the store a 1 rating because they think it is a "rough neighborhood" or say that the store does not have enough of one countries food basics. I think this store is amazing! Where else can you go and buy kimchi, queso, fresh whole fish, fresh ginger, poblano peppers and star fruit in the same store! I have also purchased amazing curry powders, sauces, noodles and grains and have tried foods that I would never have tried, if I did not shop here. Does it have the "Whole Foods" or "Mom's" vibe- no, does it have everything on a traditional shopping list, probably not, and that is the point. This shopping experience is very akin to an experience in any major city, anywhere in the world, where they have diversity of cuisines, and people, offering items that go beyond the status quo. If you want neat, tidy and quiet this is not your place, but if you want to explore new flavors and have a unique grocery shopping experience this should be your go to. Everything looks healthy. Mangoes are perfectly ripe and only $0.99 each! The persimmons are almost ripe, but worth buying and ripening at home. What's nice is that the produce area is very tidy too. I didn't have a chance to peruse the whole store; I only strolled down the snack aisle and didn't indulge because I really needed to get to school after taking the morning off. BTW, they sell Pocky in various sizes and it's cheaper than any other place I've seen. I need to get back here soon. Maybe I will extend my lunch break next week and change my vanilla ways. Korean Korner is a very a big supermarket covering lots of fresh/frozen/dried/prepared varieties of produce/seafood/meats, pre-packaged dry goods, and rice. Despite its lack of appearance (i.e. Balducci's), there are plenty of diamonds in the rough (inexpensive, to boot) that easily add up to 5 star-shopping! I don't go for the meats (the department does not smell fresh; go to Balducci's, instead) or artisan foods (Dong A is my go-to spot for kimchi and other prepared Corean side dishes). Instead, I zero in on these diamond dozen items to get at KK (explanations to follow up): *1. Seafood (Fish--mainly whole, Crab, Shrimp, Squid, Clams) *2. Geem/Green Tea 3. Shingo Pear (7-count/5 kg), seasonally best Oct-Nov *4. Purple Potatoes *5. U-Choy *6. Corean Radish *7. Napa Cabbage *8. Green Onions *9. Chili Peppers 10. Lime/Lemon *11. Organic Tofu/Natural/Pesticide-Free Soybean Sprouts 12. Zenol Patch *All leading to the yummiest week ever (and still going strong!). 1. The seafood department smells fishy compared to the pristine BlackSalt Fish Market, but they have great quality among many items (some not available at BlackSalt) at a fraction of the price. As with any seafood market (even BlackSalt's), you need to see/feel/smell which items are freshest. They will clean/de-scale/de-gut your selections. The squid and shrimp are excellent but require a bit of handling at home. Their cleaned/packaged blue crabs can be very plump and exquisite for crab bouillabaisse. If you are short on time, their fluke fillets packaged for sashimi are worth the price (relative to their other items but decent compared to Balducci's or BlackSalt) for making pristine pan-fried dishes. Clams are packaged and good, too. The whole fish require the most searching but can be the most rewarding. I recommend the mackerels, flounder, and red snapper (this one requires its own paragraph based on the other-worldly experience from this weekend). Normally, Red Snapper (pre-gutted) are ~1 lb and are great for pan-frying or broiling. Last Friday, my dining companion and I lucked out on a beautiful and huge 2.3-pounder, which obviously had no business being there =D It was so fresh it must have somehow fallen through Le Bernardin's order and landed here. My dining companion made THE BEST FISH ENTREE(s) EVER utilizing the fish's impeccably pristine freshness and flavor. This find alone can make me overlook KK's dinginess. 2. They carry a wonderful selection of Corean dry-roasted seaweed (definitely splurge on the super premium varieties), Green Tea (brown-rice version is nice), and both in one... green tea-infused geem! 3. Along with passion fruit, Corean Shingo Pear is easily my favorite fruit. Finding outstanding ones can be very tough, but this autumn featured some truly exquisite versions at HUGE SIZES (over 1.5 each!) with incredibly juicy, perfectly textured, and lightly-florally sweet flavor! It is seasonal but definitely worth the wait until next autumn. 4. The most versatile, tasty, beautiful, and healthy (?) version of the tuber can be found by the box full here--not at Giant or Balducci's/ Trader Joe's (only mini-ones in mixed colored potato bags). The proverbial candy for the spud-loving sweet tooth! 5. Their selection of Asian green vegetables can be excellent. Just be diligent when picking. 6-8, 10. These items specifically are consistently fresh and inexpensive. 9. They have a nice selection of chilies--particularly the sometimes-impossible-to-find serrano. Plus, they have jalapeños for only $0.99/lb! 11. They are very fresh and nicely priced for the quality. 12. Zenol (cool type) is a great Ben-Gay-like menthol patch that works like a charm on fresh soft-tissue injuries. Just be sure to go to the little store-within-a-store in the back adjacent the fish department. From the outward looks, Korean Korner looks very humble, but look around more carefully and you will find that it has many diamonds worth unearthing for culinary bliss and budgeting virtue--a tremendous two-fer like beauty and brains (or the other way around?). read more

Since HMart has dominated the Korean grocery scene in the US, it's rare to see an independent Korean market joint like Korean Korner. I've decided to write a positive review on this place because... well there is a liquor section in the store!!! :D My favorite Korean liquor is Seng Maggoli (Korean traditional draft rice wine, that has a bit of sparkling taste). It tastes like really mild soju with milky texture and with sweet soda like taste. For those who don't like soju, give this a try. It is DELLIIIIIICIOUUSSS~! I was really delighted to find Korean liquor at Korean Korner, and grabbed a couple for cooking and drinking..... (*as a small tip, if you put just a tiny bit of plum wine into marinating Korean bbq meat, it will enhance the flavor sooo much). Although Korean Korner is a small market, it is surprisingly packed with many great products. You can't compare the freshness of the grocery products to places like whole foods', but they are decent. Avoid this supermarket. In terms of cleanliness, and give it 2/10. Seems like a lot of their produce are bad. The veggies and fruits are kept in warm temps which makes them ripe faster. One compliant is that the market does not have fresh live shrimps. They are packaged in the freezer already cooked. To get to the shopping center, it can be a bit confusing. Will need to make additional turns to get here. I was pleasantly surprised that they take credit cards here. Customer service here was a bit lacking, but then again I came here about an hour before closing. I don't anticipate coming back here. Try other supermarkets if possible. read more

This review is for the food court. If you're able to look past the service, Korean Korner's food court offers 20+ number of items at a very reasonable price. For example, a seafood soup with plenty of fresh ingredients will run only about $10-12, and that comes with side dishes and rice. I had specifically ordered #20, which is beef short rib with veggie soup. It's pretty good by food court standard and certainly the portion is much larger. Though they got my spiciness level wrong (which apparently is typical from frequent goers), it was more concerning that they denied making a mistake, despite me saying it twice and my friend who stood next to me heard me loud and clear. This place is an extension off a grocery store so it's not meant to be fancy by any means. But if your looking for bang for your buck, no place beats this Korean korner. I usually always get the kamja tang (spicy potato soup) and it is the bees knees. The meat and the potato come out super tender. The veggies they add in give it a nice texture and hint of green flavor that accompanies the spicy broth very well. If it was based off food and service alone I would give it 5 stars. Fresh fish in the back, marinated meats in the back of the produce section, sometimes hard to find "international greens" available in produce, and lots of international goodies. You would expect mostly korean however it has changed with the neighborhood and offers a wide range of goods from neighboring Asian counties as well as from our neighbors down in Latin & South America :) There's also a little eatery located inside and although it's not the most restaurant worthy, it's sufficient to quell your Korean lunchtime craving. read more

Korean Korner katers kraveable Korean kooking! --------------------- The food for my daughter's dol (first birthday) was catered from Korean Korner. The $12/person package included: galbi jjim (slow-roasted galbi), sashimi, cali rolls, sweet & spicy chicken wings, jap chae, a few pajuns (Korean-style pancakes), tempura-esque shrimp & veggies, a whole host of veggies, stuff for the dol table (rice cake, some fake centerpieces), and delivery. The galbi jjim in particular was succulent. I repeat, SUCCULENT. And yes, I had to use a thesaurus for that word. They have cheaper packages (bulgogi instead of galbi jjim, and no sushi/sashimi), as well as much more expensive ones, but the $12 one was excellent. All of our guests were asking us where the food was from for the next few days. Highly recommended. As far as the grocery store, it's small, cramped and make sure you check the expiration dates on all the products. Minus 1 star for making me feel even fatter than I am. They have these barriers in the front with narrow passages so that no one can steal their shopping carts. Sometimes, I have to turn sideways to enter. The silver lining is that, my fat behind will need to carry all of my groceries out to the car since the cart can't pass. read more

I have to admit, I struggled mightily with this place at first. A bizarre and rather unfortunate name, crowded masses of Asian and Hispanic families ramming you with their shopping carts as you maneuver unswept aisles, and a minefield of a parking lot with grandmas glaring and sneering at you over their steering wheels on the weekends. At first glance, Korean Korner is the dusty and dirty Pig-Pen to the cleaner and more presentable Linus of the nearby Silver Spring H Mart. Upon closer inspection though, KK, like Pig-Pen, pleasantly surprises you and you start to appreciate it/him. (Bear with me, I'm going to make this work...) We find out in Peanuts, that Pig-Pen, in addition to becoming kind of endearing in a begrimed way, is actually some type of genius-savant when it comes to playing the drums. In the same way, KK grows on you as you discover, that despite its disheveled appearance, there are terrific deals to be had here. From dirt-cheap fresh fruits and vegetables, to excellent jarred kimchi, to bachelor-friendly make-your-own-naengmyun kits, to a bevy of cheap and tasty bbq-and-stew-ready raw meats, I found myself liking the place more and more. And it was then that I made the momentous discovery. Like Pig-Pen, Korean Korner is a straight-up Rain Man when it comes to... ...packaged ramen. Now, I fancy myself something of a packaged ramen aficionado. In high school and college, my buddies and I fueled our video game marathons by intaking ungodly quantities of Shin Ramyun, Mi Goreng and Chapagetti. The genius of KK, apart from stocking an incredible selection of ramen, is that they actually have TWO separate sections dedicated to these instant noodles. The one in the front, like your standard Asian supermarket, allows you to purchase ramen in bulk (boxes of 12+ packages), albeit at lower than average prices. The wall in the back has the same huge selection, but lets you buy much smaller bundles (3-6 packages) at often heavily discounted prices. This allows you to try a variety of different types and brands of ramen without committing to an entire box! I normally walk out of here with three to four 4-packs of different types of ramen for around ten bucks, happy as a clam. In conclusion, if you don't mind a little dust, some harrowing parking lot near-accidents, and a ghetto-United-Nations flair to your grocery shopping, there's a lot of quirky and inexpensive treats this busy little supermarket has to offer. read more

A pleasant surprise to find a Korean grocery store where they have a great selection of items for other Asian cuisines. I was particularly pleased to find a great selection of Filipino items from soy sauce, mixes, and ingredients for dessert. They also have a good selection in their freezer section where you can get hard-to-find ingredients like grated ube, cassava, and banana leaves. The produce section is well-stocked and fresh. But once i put them in the water, i noticed a little black thing floating around and it was a bug. That wasn't gonna put me off eating these noodles, but then i saw 3 more bugs crawl out to get away from the boiling water. Next thing i know there were 7 bugs floating in the water. After visiting some H Marts, I decided to stick with good old KK. Aside from having the qualities of any good asian market (e.g. cheap produce), it's just comfy and familiar...not to mention closer than H Mart. The grocery store is solid. I'm not a fan of their catering, but I think that's more a result of having to have it at EVERY SINGLE korean person's event EVER. On the other hand, it's a great value. Now, let's talk about their superb in-house meal station. Having spent my childhood in Korea and going through phases where I would refuse to eat anything that didn't come from a street food stand or wasn't served under a plastic tent, I live for no-fuss korean food that can be ready in 5 minutes and KK delivers. read more

I seem to be turning into a bit of a connoisseur of Korean markets. I guess everyone should have a goal but I am not sure how this became mine. . . I was driving around Wheaton on a day off and I spotted Korean Korner and decided to drop in. It is pretty close to the Wheaton Han Ah Reum (aka H-Mart) where I usually shop for fruits/vegetables/meat/fish so I decided to do a little comparison shopping. I knew the minute that I walked it that I had made a mistake. The store is not as clean, the aisles are even more claustrophobic than those at H-Mart, and I do not think that they had the variety that H-Mart provides. Maybe I am missing something but I do not think that I will stop here again. Back to H-Mart for me! read more

I like Korean Korner for the same reasons that Su. K does. Although I've never got anything catered from them for my events, I have tried the items that Su K. has offered at his events. Yes, the Kim Bop, Temperas, Chap Chae, and finger foods were yummy! I'd also like to say thanks to Su K. for the tip on expiration dates. Yes, check those dates! So about the store. It's small. It's smelly and gets smellier as you head towards the back (where all the seafood is located). The floors seem dirty a lot. The shopping baskets seem shady (they look soiled). What I do like is that they are conveniently located next to my favorite thrift store Unique Bazaar. I don't mind shopping at Korean Korner when I just need a few small items. I think the prices are comparable to any Korean owned Asian mart. A part of the store which I once loved is located all the way back pass the glass counters to the left corner of the store. There is a little corner with Sanrio and Korean anime items that are comparable to Sanrio. While these businesses in the back are separate from the main store they carry nice things like origami papers and containers for your origami creations. Oh and a couple of random things: 1) Don't buy American products here. It's way overpriced. I got Ricotta Cheese and Sour Cream here and it cost almost a dollar more than Giant for the same stuff. 2) They also sell LARD! By the tubs! Best ingredient for making flaky pie crusts. 3) I imagine that people in wheelchairs could has access, but I wouldn't suggest it without help getting the chair over the first partitions in the front of the store (these are the ones Su K. finds troublesome). 4) I think the prices for Salmon are nice. They also have Salmon Roe which I don't find that often at the H Mart or Lotte closest to here. read more

THis is a place for fresh produce (period) Since they seem to always been crowded, the turn over for food is pretty high. This hence causes the produce to be pretty fresh. As for the restaurant in there, depending on what you order, it's pretty good. :) As for the Kim Chee.. probably the best in the MD area. As as some people have said, since they are kind of on the smaller size... they can't compete with super H-Mart for selection. read more
