First things first. I have to address why I was so sad after this visit. I TOTALLY FORGOT they have mini cocktail flights. I was so excited about this option when I saw it on Instagram but there is so little mention of it in the menu (basically an, "ask us about our mini cocktail flight" at the bottom of a page) and no leaflet showing the flight details or price. I'm very much a person that likes to try a little bit for everything so once I remembered it after we left, I had a moment. I got a Gin Fizz and the bf got a Blueberry Vanilla Mule. The gin Fizz tasted very much like lemonade, even with the addition of cran flavoring. The Blueverry Vanilla Mule was very strongly clove. If you like clove, you'd likely like that one. We decided against getting second cocktails since happy hour had ended, but got a flight to try their stuff. We like the liqueurs but they are hard to sip straight due to all the flavor they pack. Our favorite was the Pink Peppercorn Gin out of everything we tried. We would definitely come back, but please print out the cocktail flight list or at least suggest it if people are hemming and hawing over what to get like I was. read more

I loved Green Door Distilling! Nate and I stopped in for a drink and ended up doing the tour, which they do on Fridays. The tour is $20 and it comes with a flight, which we were going to try anyway. Or you can just do the tour for $10 if you don't want a flight. It's not much of a "tour" in a physical sense as their production facility is small, in just one room, but we learned a lot about distilling in general, as well as a lot of information about the company and their products. I'd highly recommend it especially if you don't know much about the company. The interior has a 20s speakeasy feel, which I really liked. It's a little fancy but comfortable and welcoming. The drink menu was pretty large and it was tough for me to choose which drink I wanted after the flight. I ended up with the blueberry margarita because it was on happy hour. It was really great! Not too sweet. Nate got the cherry black Manhattan which we both enjoyed too. I loved the flight because we got to try pretty much all of the spirit offerings, including their amaro, Oaxacan green corn bourbon, and pink peppercorn gin, which were all unique and very tasty. My friends took me here for the first time and I was so impressed! The menu was a little overwhelming with how many choices they had, but the staff was super helpful. They have a rotating seasonal menu as well! It was in a good location not too far from downtown but out of the way enough for it to be nice and quiet. The atmosphere was comfortable and the lights were all super cute! I like that they had a large parking lot and a lot of seating. They do have an outside patio as well for warmer weather. They have ducks that you can add to your drink for $2 and I had to get one just because! Green Door Distilling is a great addition to the Kalamazoo Downtown! The inside is decorated to give off modern speakeasy vibes. The menu has seasonally rotating specialty cocktails as well new takes on classic drinks. We had the pleasure of sampling some of their spirits and were thoroughly impressed! The Blueberry Lavender Liquor and Gin were definitely our favorites! All cocktail orders are done at the entry point of the bar. Bartenders then make your drink to bring to you. I recommend sitting at the bar to see how much does into a single cocktail and appreciate the bartender's expertise. Both of our cocktails were delicious and the cute water cups offered are a memento to bring home. Our only draw back was hearing some of the staff's conversations and personal remarks as they worked. Tip: The distillery offers tours on weekends to show the production process, allow guests to sample spirits, and get a more intimate interaction to ask questions. read more

So I've been here a few times now but most recently I went for one of their cocktail classes and it was an awesome experience! As for the place, it's a bar that specializes in higher end cocktails and had some snacks, an amazing outdoor area, and even has a stage for some live music both indoors and out if I'm not mistaken. They obviously do classes as I already mentioned... I purchased the tickets for my mom and I to take together as her birthday present, and it was a really fun time. They had a theme, and taught us how to make three different summer cocktails. You sit at a table with other groups, and the instructor is one of the bar tenders and the guy we had running ours was great. We had fun learning to make the drinks, drinking them and chatting with new people at our table. I would highly recommend the classes but at the very least stop in for a drink! read more

Small hometown distillery which offer spirits that I don't see very common. Beside bourdon, gin and vodka. They have Amaro which is Italian. Inside has a good vibe to hangout and enjoy your drink. Very cool,little quaint, local distillery. They have a fabulous menu of cocktails made only with the spirits they distill in-house. The mixologists are pleasant and easy to talk with. They will even offer you tastes of anything they offer for sale. The bar is cozy and warm. They also have an outdoor area that is comfortable, spacious and quiet to enjoy cocktails. Finally made it over here! Great cocktails, good atmosphere, but what really made the experience was our bartender Chelsea. She was helpful, welcoming, efficient, and chatty - we're talking the kind of bartender you see in the movies. At one point, I watched her carefully pick out a basil leaf for my high ball, then decide it wasn't right, pick a new one, bruise it, and make a great drink, all in the span of 30 seconds or so. +1 to all the previous reviews that mention that the drinks are smallish and full of ice, but I still recommend this place. I do wish they had food - Chelsea said that's part of the eventual plan. read more

After all the breweries, distilleries have started to pop up in kalamazoo. When this place opened, I was very excited. they have great selection of cocktails and various drinks. Apparently they don't serve food. I would visit this place more often if the drink prices weren't expensive. Most drinks are atleast $7 and $8 which is sometimes a little to pricey. Other than that the staff is friendly, they got great ambience and calm atmosphere. I would definitelyrecommend this place for everyone. read more

A very unique experience that I find hard describing in its entirety. I stopped in on a Saturday afternoon and the venue has a combination of chique and rustic which provides a slightly strange but pleasing overall atmosphere. They don't serve food, but I think they mainly want to focus on their custom cocktails. After learning about the establishment at the tour, I have a deeper appreciation of their drinks because they say they hand-craft every single element from the club soda to the blueberry juice. It's hard to find a place with such dedication. I had their blueberry gimlet and tried the strawberry vodka lemonade and both were excellent. They both included lots of muddled herbs which masked some of the usual "burn" while creating a refreshing tone that wasn't overly sweet or overly savory, that can keep you thirsty and not getting burnt out on overly sweet mixed drinks. The drinks were very expensive, but when you see what goes into them, you can kind of get why. The servers were very nice as well as the tour guide. It had a very laid back and relaxed attitude. At the end of the tour, you received a small tasting of everything they had to offer from their honey whiskey, their un-aged "whiskey", gin, and vodka. I personally liked the vodka the most because of how much flavor it had. The whiskeys are very young (un-aged) and one of them wasn't up to proof to be considered a whiskey yet so I wasn't as much of a fan of them, though it was a unique experience as I have never had a whisky that "green" before. They're definitely better as a mixer alcohol. Overall- I think it was a very nice place with nice people and nice mixed drinks. If you're looking for a place for a fancy cocktail, Green door is very nice and isn't difficult to get to. Luckily they're located around places that have food, so it's also a nice place to jump to if you're just wanting that one good drink to start off or end the night. read more

Finally got out here. It's been on my must-do list since it opened and I've heard nothing but good things. It lived up to the hype. They really deliver on flavor with homemade bitters and shrubs, tinctures and sour mixes. Yum! It's awesome to see this area -- which I remember being mostly abandoned warehouses in the 90s and early 2000s -- getting so revitalized. Green Door has done a beautiful job with their building with creative and inexpensive design flourishes (the plumbing pipes repurposed as shelving units are an especially nice touch) and there's something to delight the eye wherever you look, especially since the production facility is viewable behind a large wall of windows on one side of the seating area. Also gorgeous is Green Door's answer to the "mug club" -- gorgeous, vividly colorful and blown glass vessels from local business Avolio GlassWerks. Each glass is unique and spectacular. Of course your palate also goes on an incredible journey here. The painstaking preparations of the signature cocktails here is worth the wait. The bartenders look like they're concocting a chemical experiment as they carefully dole out the tiniest splashes of liquids from little droppers, then carve into citrus fruits and glaze the glass rim with the rind before tossing it on top. One of our cocktails was a beautifully layered creation that looked like a sunset as the last layer was added and surged to the bottom of the glass. Speaking of which, the small patio behind the building is a gorgeous spot to catch the sunset, as we did after ArtHop on Friday. My friend who's been there on tons of occasions said the menu has been different on most of his visits (and the bartender told us a new revision is in the works). The specials board also offers new delights to keep things interesting for regulars. We tried both of the day's specials -- the Cinco De Mayo special Palloma, which combined habanero-infused High Point honey with their First Ascent Whiskey, grapefruit, agave, scorpka pepper tincture, grenadine, lime and salt (the first sip was pretty spicy before we gave the concoction a stir, but every single sip thereafter was heavenly) and the Strawberry Pearl, served over ice, which paired homemade sour, fresh strawberry puree, orange and First Ascent Whiskey. My friend aptly described it as "like drinking a strawberry Julius and feeling like a big boy," which was adorable but true. It had that foamy, yummy quality of a Julius with just a little bit of alcohol bite. We loved it. The Old Fashioned also was fantastic -- a little less strong than most with a lot of orange muddled in. The only reason I held back the final star is that the drinks are pretty tiny. The rocks glasses are filled to the rim with boulders of ice that really fill in most of the glass so once the drink is poured over there's not much space to fill (and my friend's manhattan served neat only took up about an inch at the bottom of the glass). The flavors were absolutely phenomenal but it would probably take at least 3 or 4 drinks to get me tipsy, and I'm a lightweight. The homemade chex mix was also delicious but a little spendy at $3.50 a scoop. read more

As a local Kalamazoo resident, I've been to this distillery multiple times but not regularly. I'm good for maybe a couple times a year. In the past the employees have been very knowledgeable and passionate about the spirits and cocktails, not any longer. This visit made it extremely clear that nobody gives a fuck about that anymore. It seems like a "club" now with mixed drinks. As somebody who is in to bourbon, this place leaves A LOT to be desired. Not to say this place doesn't have a place in the scene but if you are looking for an actual distillery experience, this is not it. read more

Been watching their development closely as it's in the neighborhood and a much needed distillery. Loved the pallet fence outside. Was pretty disappointed there was literally no bike parking. Especially because my understanding was the city of kalamazoo was requiring businesses to address bike parking prior to opening. That would certainly be the case in a bike friendly city. So not a great first impression. I don't own a car, I rode my bike with my partner the less than a mile from our house to this new bar, only to find they hadn't addressed bike parking at all (you can imagine that would never be the case for automobile parking). Might not seem like a big deal to some but drops my rating down a star on that alone. Inside is pretty cool, they did a lot (including more pallets) to dull the old print shop feel of the building. Interior was simple and understated I thought. I think they did a solid job in redevelopment of this old building and look forward to seeing how they evolve from here. The whiskey (the important part) did not blow me away by any means. I tried a white whiskey neat and we shared the green door gal and the old fashioned. I thought the old fashioned was the best of the drinks even though it was a bit to sweet. The bartender even asked if I like my old fashions extra sweet (def not) but it still tasted a bit too sweet. Also some confusion with the pineapple based green door gal drink as we ordered it off the menu for $4. The bartender said 'would you like the full cocktail?' We said yes because naturally we weren't expecting anything less than a full cocktail. Turns out the 'full cocktail' is more than double the menu price. It was a solid cocktail likely worth the price but felt like a bit of bait and switch. Why not just advertise the price of the full cocktail on the menu? What exactly is the drink that isn't the full cocktail? Whiskeys need some work but I'm willing to give them time on that. At this point I'll definitely visit again and recommend to friends. I hope they address their total lack of bike parking quickly and I look forward to seeing their new business evolve and grow. read more
