Overall, we had a so-so experience at Butcher Block Social. The food had solid flavor. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the sides were especially good. The green beans and macaroni & cheese were my favorites! We came in for lunch. We were about the second table seated around 11:30am. The place quickly filled up! However, there was only one server. It's not her fault. But it kinda sucked after a while. And it was our first time trying this place. Since it got so busy, our server got tied up taking orders and she seemed to be answering the phone too. I noticed that our food was ready and under the warmer. Unfortunately, our food was not that hot when it got to us, finally. The ribs were overdone. My pulled chicken was very good although it was a tad on the cool side. Since they don't take reservations DH and I decided to take our chances and go there for his birthday. The parking lot looked packed! We found a good spot and went in expecting to wait for awhile. The maitre d asked if we didn't mind high tables and we agreed and were sat right then. The stools were black metal without backs and made for very uncomfortable seating. They are hard to scoot in or out for dining. There were a lot of these high dining tables and people like us chose them just so they didn't have to wait. We got there about 6pm on a Friday night and looking around we saw empty tables. When we go again I will ask for a table. There are lot of servers scurrying around carrying plates of food. We ordered beer and a gin and tonic. We ordered the smoked prime rib which was strong! i! We ordered the smoked prime ribs which came with quartered potatoes. I didn't see any side salads and the only beg available were hreen beans that were cold greasy and lacking flavor for $5. I ordered roasted root vegs for $5 that were very greasy cold and one of the cubed little pieces were inedible and bitter. I cannot recommend the extra sides. The prime ribs came with a slice of toasted garlic ? roll. portion control needs help here as I got a 12" piece and hubby got a 3" piece. The meat was rare and not too smokey flavored. I am glad for that as the nice meat flavor could have been overwhelmed by smoke. Not too much fat on our slices. easy to cut and easy to chew. The potatoes were hot and crisp. There were 2 little sauce cups of au jous and one called horsesauce - a mild horseradish . I decided to half my meal so to have a dessert. I got there about 6pm vanilla sundae with chocolate sauce and a little caramel. G The whipped cream was almost invisible and the cherry on top was invisible. There weren't any sprinkles either. I was annoyed at the small amount of the icecream and the toppings and the missing ingredients. The serversaid they get their icecream from the icecream store nearby in the parking lot. My vanilla was lackluster and Hudsonville icecream is much more delicious. Was the prime worth $38? If it came with some salad or some fresh veg then I would agree. The Butchers Social could take some tips and inspiration from NYC and other great restaurants that are a treat. Put a basket of bread and butter on the table as soon as the diners sit. We didn't get any water. Inspect your dishes before they go out for edibility. Do portion control for ingredients and servings. Give your diners more than they order . read more

I finally tried this place and it was a great experience! Inside was spacious with lots of seating for large groups and the vibes were warm and inviting. Our server was very attentive and the food came out fast. I got the bbq sliders and my friends got the hog wild grilled cheese and the birria quesadilla. All our dishes were delicious. We came to the butcher block social around 5:00 p.m. it wasn't very busy, we were greeted and sat to a spot quickly. After giving us our menus and giving us time our waiter got our drinks, which I might add they have very many to choose from especially when it comes to whiskey and bourbon they have four pages on their drink menu alongside wine tequila rum gin and even mocktails if you're looking for something non-alcoholic. I got the Brooke which was wonderfully prepared. My husband got the prime rib (28) along with cornbread casserole and I got pulled pork loaded Mac and cheese with deviled eggs salad. My husband's prime rib was cooked to perfection and the casserole was up to his liking-however my meal tasted wonderful but was quiet cold as if it sat for a moment. Our waiter was incredibly friendly and always on track with things he was very good at making conversation he even invited us to stay a little bit longer to watch for live music and told us we could stay as long as we want when we were done with our food. read more

The atmosphere is a little hard to classify. There are upscale elements, but not fancy. There are woodsy elements, but only touches. It is definitely a very welcoming feel. We got the House made Chips and Dip ($8). We got the Smokehouse bean dip, the queso, black bean & corn salsa. The chips are very good and all the dips were excellent, however the smokehouse dip was my favorite, it's fantastic. I ordered the BYO Bbq Wet Burrito ($16). It has pulled pork, shredded cheese, and smokehouse bean dip wrapped in a tortilla. It is then covered in bbq enchilada sauce. It was excellent. Nice complex flavors that combine perfectly. One of the people I was with ordered the Smokehouse Smash Burger ($18). This has a 6 oz house ground brisket & chuck patty, smoked cheddar & gouda, black pepper candied bacon, lettuce, tomato, and herb remoulade. It was stated to be very good. The other person I was with ordered the Campfire Crust Flatbread pizza ($18). The crust was declared to be excellent and the pizza itself was very good. One warning, the menu claims it feeds 2. Only if your bird eaters. The service was excellent. Very friendly and efficient. Overall a 5 star review. Would I return? Absolutely. read more

One of my best friends and I heard about the "girl dinner" event that butcher block social was having and were eager to try this spot out. Service was friendly from the very beginning and we got directed to their newer speakeasy area of the restaurant which has such a cozy and inviting vibe. The drinks were great and made well from the bartender and then food impressed us. The truffle waffle fries with aioli were our favorite! Came here for lunch on a weekday just before the rush- it is now table service (instead of ordering at the counter) per our waitress. Service was speedy - the menu has something for everyone ranging from BBQ to salads and tacos. Since I generally eat gluten free, I went for just the 1/2 pound of brisket and also got mashed potatoes. Sadly there is no combo meal of brisket + a side but I wish there was! Otherwise it gets pricey. The sandwiches and burgers seemed like better value/deals but I didn't want to go bunless/breadless Brisket ($14)was tender flavorful and delightfully smokey. The mashed potatoes were delicious but again, value for a $5.75 scoop of potatoes is questionable. The below meal cost $20 not including tip. Inside there is a lot of space and big tables to accommodate larger groups which is nice. Had a late Sunday lunch at Butcher Block Social in Caledonia. The curbside appeal was inviting, and as we entered the place, it felt warm and cozy. There was ample parking. We were greeted by a friendly server and seated by the window. The place is large, with a nice atmosphere, and features many TVs to watch sports. We checked out the menu. It was typical of the local bar and grill scene, and we didn't see anything special. They had a few entrees, sandwiches, salads, and more. My wife ordered the Big Block Special, which came with 3 Eggs, Potatoes, Toast, and Bacon. She enjoyed it and was satisfied. I preferred lunch, so I got the Smokehouse Brisket Burger with loaded meat, cheese, and the usual condiments. It was tasty, and filling, and worth ordering again. First time checking out this place! Been excited to try this spot and it is really big and like the restaurant feel. We sat outside since it was another beautiful evening. The service was great and the food came super quick: there was a steady flow for a Thursday but not too crazy, but even still the food was fast. Pretty great looking drink and food with lots of tasty options. I got the nachos of course (pulled chicken was my favorite of the triple meat- but all was good) and my wife got the tacos! Everything was very delicious and tasty and super filling: we had lots of leftovers. The price was reasonable to the few other bbq type places that are around Grand Rapids but I like the more restaurant feel here. Excited to see another local restaurant in Caledonia. As others have said, the concept needs a little bit of explaining so some big signs would be helpful. Luckily when we walked in, a server was nearby and pointed us to the far counter to order and said a server would come take a drink order after we pay and grab a table. So you will have 2 bills at the end of the day. They have a menu you can order off of or you can just pick meat based on weight and add sides. For a weekend lunch, the only meat was pulled pork, brisket, and chicken. I wish they had some sausage or ribs but it sounded like they had ribs cooking for dinner. The sides were all delicious. I've seen some comments complaining about the sides but we liked them all. The coleslaw was very light, and the potatoes/mac and cheese were seasoned nicely and not mushy at all. The brisket was our favorite meat of the 3 but I enjoyed it all. The pulled pork seemed to have a seasoning on it that was similar to a Mexican/taco seasoning, which was interesting. We loved the variety of bbq sauces on the table! The staff checked on us multiple times even though it isn't a true waiter scenario, which was nice. They also have a coffee shop in the corner which I believe has different owners, but I'm not sure how that really works. read more

Waited 30 min for appetizer, just to find out they were out. Then ordered some ribs as an appetizer. They came out so dry even the bartender looked defeated when she set them down. They were so old and dry they were inedible. Bartender was great, she snatched them away and went to get new ones. They were out. The worst part of the experience was watching the staff struggle so bad. Made me anxious to see them having such a rough night. Looked like they hired a line cool staff of 18 year olds. Went for dinner and to enjoy live music tonight. The wait staff did a great job for a very full seating night. Our waitress even made our cookie skillet herself, as there were so many orders going in! Would recommend the Loaded Mac as a yummy and filling entree. My husband liked the Meatballs Marinara also. If you're a BBQ fan, butcher block social is THE spot. With garage doors that open to the outside and a variety of picnic-style tables and modern rustic decor, be prepared to spend plenty of time here on nice days enjoying the atmosphere and the weather. We loved their brisket and pulled pork sandwiches (generous portions of meat on delicious hoagie rolls), their corn bread casserole, and their cheesy potatoes the most! The mac and cheese was the only meh item. Food is served cafeteria style, but we had friendly waiters checking in on us frequently to grab our drink orders and clear tables. For drinks we loved their version of a margarita! We were a little disappointed with their old fashioned, but if you like straight bourbon they have a plethora of options and several nice barstools to park at. Overall, the atmosphere and the delicious food will bring me back! Glad to have a new spot a little outside of the city. I love me a parking lot! read more

We have been here 2x in the last month and had two very different experiences. First time sat right by the stage and had the best mac & cheese with brisket I've ever had. Had a specialty mule for my drink and it was tasty. Service was quick and music was good (hard to understand the words of the singer) Second visit had a bit of a wait, waitress seemed overly busy, ordered another specialty mule and had the brisket nachos. Drink was delicious but found a big ole black hair on my nachos 3 bites in. The waitress came to check on us minutes after getting our food and didn't show up again until about 20min later. Our waters were empty, my food was pretty much untouched because of said hair in it and I was hungry and couldn't order more food because we had someplace else to be. Waitress did comp my meal but did not offer an apology for the hair in my food or for not coming back to check on us again. Music was quite loud and not as good as first time there but that's a personal preference thing. I would come probably come back again but wouldn't rush in making that happen. read more

Tried Butcher Block for the first time and the modern rustic interior is very inviting. We sat at the bar and were greeted right away but then had to try several times to get the bartender's attention to order our drinks. The couple next to us warned us that service would be very slow and it was, taking over 50 minutes to get our food. I could see the kitchen and there was always food sitting under the warmers with no one picking it up. And while our ribs were warm and ok , our two sides were cold as were the couple's next to us. The root vegetables were tasty but cold and the cool Mac & Cheese was bland. The slaw was vinegar based and could have used a bit of sweetness. The bartender did give us credit for the cold sides, which we appreciated. Normally, I would have asked for it to be warmed up, but I was afraid that would have taken a long time. Hopefully, they will find a way to get hot food out to their customers in a timely manner. read more

This is a new restaurant in Caledonia. I went here for dinner with my family and LOVED it. The ambiance was incredible and the food, delicious. I love the vibe and everything about this place. They have a fantastic bar and a coffee shop as well (haven't tried the coffee yet but heard it is good). They serve breakfast too (except Sunday, I believe)... so I stopped in to try some of their breakfast tacos to go. They may appear tiny but are very filling. I ate two (one sausage and one bacon) and was very full. Highly recommend picking some up between or en route to weekend sporting events. One of the best restaurants in Caledonia. Owned and operated by local Caledonia families. It's a classy, casual local favorite of mine for sure. Even my picky son likes it so that's telling! Wow! This company catered my daughter's wedding last summer and knocked it out of the park! We simply ordered the Family Platter...brisket, pulled pork, chicken, and three double-sides! We barely made a dent! In many ways, it reminds me of Atlantic Brewing/Mainely Meat BBQ on Mount Desert Island, Maine! The place was nearly packed, indoor/outdoor seating, only stood in line for a few minutes, ordered our food, received our food, paid for our food, found a table, and ordered drinks from our server! Let me start by saying that I really WANT to like this place. However, I have been back multiple times and seem to have the same problems each time. The service is so so so bad. I met a friend there last night for drinks & some food. First, it took forever for our waitress to come back to our table for me to put in my beer order when we got there (my friend arrived before I did, so he already had his drink). This pattern of waiting forever for our waitress to come back to us went on for the entire evening. I ordered food (sliders) which was ok, but nothing memorable. The sliders themselves were super dry and would not have been good w/o slathering a bunch of the bbq sauce on them. I tried all 3 meats offered, and the brisket was my favorite. Pricing seemed fine for the sliders with chips. We each ordered a few more drinks over the next couple hours, and we would a good 10-15 mins for (1) the waitress to come ask us if we needed anything else and (2) our drinks that were finished and sitting at the bar to be brought to our table. Our waitress just walked around, occasionally helping other tables; and other times just sitting at a table with other workers while she played on her phone. She paid zero attention to the fact that our completed drinks were sitting at the bar for 15 mins while we waited for them. Eventually, my friend walked up to the bartender and asked if he could have our drinks as we had been waiting a long time. He told my friend he could grab them, but never apologized or even commented about us having to fetch our own drinks. Ironically, about 2 mins after we had our drinks at our table; our server magically showed up at our table and asked us how we like the drinks. She never once recognized or apologized for making us wait forever and then eventually go get our own drinks. At one point, I had finished my beer, and I was constantly looking around and had to flag our server down to see if I could order something else. It was a super annoying experience to be constantly looking around trying to find the server to help us. The people sitting next to us had ordered food and were done eating for a long time, and the server never came back to cash them out. I could see them looking around, trying to get the attention of their server (same one we had) and eventually the owner walked over and had to get them their bill. On one of her stops by our table later in the evening, she asked if we wanted our check; almost like she wanted to get rid of us. This was only about 8pm, so we told her no and we wanted to order a few more drinks. They have a good bourbon selection, so its nice to try a pour of something new; but the prices are steep. Be prepared to pay about 1/3 to 1/4 of the cost of an entire 750ml bottle for a pretty small pour in a rocks glass. I asked if they had any "big rocks" for ice for my bourbon pour, and our waitress did not know. She eventually brought out my drink with a single ice cube that was the size of an old school "ice cube from a tray". Not really what I would expect from a bar that sells itself as a big bourbon destination. All in all, a very disappointing visit to the "local cool spot". I had high hopes for this place when they first opened, but they still have not improved their big achilles heel yet, which is horrible service. read more
