This is sort of The Fancy Place here in Lincoln. Being decidedly low-class, myself, I've only just managed to try it after nearly three years of living here. Thanks to the times we live in, a lot of places are offering family meal versions of their dishes and they are one of many doing this, but I say with much sadness and disappointment that this is one of the worst versions I've tried. The flavor and concept on the main and the two sides was all there, for sure, but it wasn't a great value at all, and everything was almost inedibly salty plus incredibly tough. My chicken breast took a whole minute of chewing per bite and actually hurt my tongue with dehydration from the amount of salt. I really expected more from the number one recommendation for special occasion dinners in town! I'm not sure I'll be back if this is what I can expect from them (at an even worse value for individual entrees), but I'm glad I tried so I can check it off my list. A side note- the decor and atmosphere inside the restaurant were nice, if kinda old-fashioned in an out-of-date way. Very 90s, but a superlative example thereof. read more

Called ahead to ask if we needed a reservation for a table for 5 for brunch. We were told no, just show up and we'd immediately get a table. Arrived and was told it would be a 20 min wait. Host was rude, and said we should have made a reservation. Would not let us wait for a table inside, made a vague reference to Covid. read more

Excellent food and service. Had the French onion soup which was the best I've ever had. Some places make it too salty but not here. Just perfect and delicious. For main course I had the chicken with stuffed fio gras sausage and mushroom cream sauce which was outstanding. read more

Allow me to tell you a story about Mothers Day, 2018. We made a reservation last week for 8:00am on Sunday morning, Breakfast for three. The young man on the phone then asked, "Would you like the main restaurant? Or would you prefer the buffet?" Our answer was simple: "Sweet! Buffet, please!" The young man replied, "Great we have you down. See you on Sunday." Fast forward to Sunday morning. We arrive at 8:00am on the dot. The doors to the buffet hall are locked. No problem, we will check at the main restaurant. We announce our name and our reservation for 8:00am. "Sorry, your name isn't on the list." Us: "Well, we actually have reservations for the buffet but the door is locked." Manager: "The buffet doesn't open until 9:45." Us: "Wow, okay, well you took our reservation for 8:00am for the buffet, but since we are already here, I guess we'll just take a table and order from the menu." Manager: "We don't have any available tables" Us: "Wait, your restaurant made this reservation, what can we do so my 74-year old mother can have breakfast?" Manager: "We don't have any available tables." Us: "But you clearly made a mistake and put us down for 8:00am for the Buffet" Manager: "The buffet doesn't open until 9:45" A trend quickly developed where we realized this idiot manager had zero empathy, took no action to apologize, correct or otherwise address the situation and simply dismissed us with start-times and the fact they were booked up. Interestingly we saw other people walking from the locked banquet room to the main restaurant and getting turned away as well, so one wonders how many people they mistakenly booked for the buffet between 8:00am and 9:45am. My guess is that it was quite a few. Long story short: The manager is clearly in the wrong profession as 1. The employee scheduling over the phone did not understand what was happening on Mothers Day, which, had the manager communicated clearly would not have been an issue, 2. The manager himself was devoid of any understanding or empathy. While I have certainly encountered poor managers in my lifetime, I have never encountered anyone in customer service management that was this big of an a**hole and offered nothing...not an apology, not a solution...nothing and simply didn't care one bit about his customers' experience. So, go ahead and read all the reviews about how great the food is at The Green Gateau, the write-ups in the Journal Star, etc. By the way, it is very good. But then ask yourself if it is worth being treated like a pile of sh*t for some good quiche. For us the answer was clear and we will not ever bother to darken the door of this establishment again. read more

This was a wonderful eating experience!! The atmosphere was fabulous and quaint. The food was impeccable!!! Our service was extraordinary and kind. We met family for dinner and had many different people to please; the menu has something for the pickiest of eaters! We ordered the artichoke chips (excellent choice) for our appetizer. Our group ordered macaroni and cheese; pot roast; salmon and risotto and steak fettuccine. All of the meals were delicious and served quickly. I've been here a few times with my girlfriend and I've had a positive experience each time. The wait staff is friendly and the atmosphere is fantastic (the interior is way nicer than outside). There is pretty limited parking, and it's been pretty busy each time I've gone (dinner, brunch) so having a reservation wouldn't be a bad idea either. I've only ever gotten the seafood, since I don't usually go out to eat at places and order things I can make myself. The calamari is my favorite appetizer, and I also really like the truffle fries. It's a little pricy as I'd expect a little larger portion for what I pay, and the wait is just a tad longer than I'd like, but at the same time it's good food, and they're serving lots of people. Also, it seems like they're pretty family friendly as I always see children, but they also have a bar and plenty of wines to choose from. Definitely recommended. read more

My second time coming and it was AMAZING as the first time! The server was a very nice man, talked about his wife. Adorable. He was very informative and funny. The environment is so classy and sophisticated so I definitely recommend dressing up a little. The LOBSTER BISQUE IS A MUST. My boyfriend prefers the red pepper soup because he doesn't like seafood, but if you do, ITS AMAZING. You get a croissant with butter everytime and it's just perfect. So light and fluffy. Yummmmy. I ordered the special Shrimp and Crab! I'm a seafood lover clearly lol. My boyfriend ordered the chicken pasta, I forgot the name. His was delicious as well! And of course we ordered dessert. They present all the deserts in front of you and I think that's so cool. The server explained what it all was. I chose the Green Gateau just because I loved it the last time. Friends and cousins took me here for a lovely birthday celebration. It's an informal, but tableclothed, restaurant with several different dining spaces, a couple of booths and a private room that can be closed off with glass doors. Has a French name, English roadhouse decor and an inventive menu that's California Contemporary ( but without the spider plants hanging from the ceiling.) The extensive menu is creative and features several duck dishes, truffle-oil french fries, lobster bisque, and bleu cheese. The presentation is beautifully done and interesting to look at. Was here two nights before on a Wednesday eve, had the Boulevard wheat beer, very refreshing. I took advantage of the Taster's Choice on the menu, 4 courses for $25, super good deal. Started with a house salad on top of a parmesan crisp with light oil and vinegar, except the crisp was a little soggy, but still tasty. The lobster bisque was yummy, I could drink a gallon of it, lucky it was just a cup, saved me from an extra workout. Main course was Escolar, similar to white tuna, firm and meaty, it was cooked perfectly, very moist and clean. For desert I got creme brulee, even get to pick white or brown sugar to go on top, I chose brown and our waitress caramelized it in front of us, nice touch! Since Friday was the last night in town, we came back for another round, a little more crowded this time. I decided not to get the 4 course and just had a salad and the potato encrusted salmon, it was the same salad again, and again the crisp was not crispy, they need to work on that, or don't call it a crisp! The salmon was on the dry side, but not too bad, they could put a little more flavor into the red pepper coulis, instead it only added color next to the mango salsa. Inside of the restaurant is lots of wood and a long bar. It does not look like much from the outside, but inside was nice. Great service from Sue who was very friendly, informative, and attentive. Menu has a good selection and the wine list is fairly extensive. Started off with a 2008 Helfrich Gewurztraminer - decent. Appetizer: Baked Brie en Croûte - Mild & buttery-soft cheese with caramelized pears and cranberries, baked in a french pastry shell, served with crostini and balsamic truffle glaze - tasty Lobster Bisque - absolutely delicious, creamy and great flavor Entrees: Macaroni and Cheese - Green Gateau serves a crazy Mac and Cheese, you pick your ingredients - large macaroni sautéed with cream, butter, sharp cheddar and gruyère cheese. baked au gratin with sourdough bread and parmesan crumbs. choose up to (2) ingredients: truffle oil, ham, green chili, salsa,lobster sauce, bacon, chicken, duck sausage, caramelized onion, prosciutto, smoke rib ends, mushrooms, jalapenos, spinach, broccoli, tomato or blue cheese - Wife really liked hers - she went with truffle oil and chicken. There is a small parking lot on one side of the restaurant. Green Gateau is a bit of iconic institution here in Lincoln. Brunch is always very good and they have many options. I always make sure to have a scone and fresh whipped cream and a preserve with any breakfast. They also have solid mimosa specials. Lunch and dinner are solid but not their strong suit in my opinion. I found this wonderful place a few blocks away from the Marriott Cornhusker Hotel. Ben was attentive and pleasant as my server. I tried a couple of things off the menu that were unique to me. The cordon bleu crepes were delicious. They came with blue cheese potato salad, which was wonderful in itself. The starters menu had beignets. They are more of a dessert and I enjoyed them with the lemon curd. Overall, the atmosphere is comfortable. The service is great. The prices are, to me, very reasonable. Awful from start to finish. Went here for our anniversary. Reserved a booth earlier in the day, when we got there they had missed the part about the booth. Sat us right next to the hosts that just stood there the whole night while their servers work rushing around. Had to listen to all their jokes about customers. Ugh...I hate to leave bad reviews but the manager just couldn't figure out how to make things right when something went awry and that's not okay. My first time there and I enjoyed a great meal and good service. When the bill came I learned that the evening's wine special was $17 a glass. Definitely would not have ordered it if the server had provided that information. When I spoke with the manager the following day he couldn't have been nicer or more concerned and assured me that their training and policy is to always share the price of specials. Then he said, and I quote, "I wish I could think of some way to make this right but I just can't." Very unfortunate as I can think of any number of ways he could have made it right. First visit to The Green Gateau while we were staying the night on our way to Colorado. It was an excellent choice for dinner - delicious food, very attentive service by Nick. We were pleasantly surprised to find that is was restaurant week in Lincoln so we enjoyed a special of appetizers, entree and dessert Nick was our server and did a great job - he made a delicious guacomole tableside, that was fun. I had the calamari - excellent presentation. I tried the lobster fettuccine and it was delicious as well. She had a pasta dish and it was delicious as well. We finished with a couple of their signature desserts and sllice of Great Gateau and a Lemon cake. We enjoyed our visit, food was excellent, service was excellent - nice time. Love this place!!! Have been coming to Lincoln, NE for four years now for work and found this GEM the first year. My coworkers and I have always enjoyed at least one dinner during the week as well as their brunch on the weekend. Both are wonderful. Never a bad service; wait staff have always been attentive, nice and fun. Food has also been definitely something "to write home to mom about"...absolutely delicious!! The roasted red pepper soup is the best I've ever had and is a must try. As an appetizer we get the baked brie which is just melt in your mouth delicious with candied apples inside. We chose it because many in our group of 6 had never eaten there and it was listed on Tripadvisor as the #1 place to eat in Lincoln Nebraska.
