I stated that I would be stopping by on the morning of Sunday the 14th to check it out and purchase it. I was told the bike would be ready and waiting for me. I arrived at the shop on Sunday 11am only to discover the bike had not been pulled, unboxed and assembled yet--a process that takes between an hour to an hour and a half. I had just driven 96mi/2 hours to get there only to learn they failed to follow through with having the bike ready & waiting. As I left the shop, the Owner stopped me outside stating that he wanted to "help me". I asked him what exactly he meant by that, to which he responded "I'll have the bike built for you right now." Now, I'm thinking to myself this guy didn't have time to get it right prior to my arrival; yet, suddenly has found the time--My Time--to get it right after my arrival? Really? That's how it's done? I told the Owner I don't do business like this. No reputable business does. Since when did it become acceptable to presume upon a potential customers time? My plans for the day did not include waiting 1 1/2 hours for a bike build. This guy didn't even offer to buy me a cup of coffee while I waited. Furthermore, what prevented them from calling me ahead of time to inform me the bike wouldn't be ready & waiting? They had a day and a half! Also, I couldn't help but wonder as I drove home, if the Owner lost sight of the fact that as a paying customer, I was there to Help him and not the other way around. He needed to sell the bike; I don't need to buy. Lastly, if they can't be counted upon to assemble a bike when they said they would, or at least make a simple heads-up courtesy phone call, then what is there to make me think they can follow through with anything else? Aspies like me understand that no eye contact thing and the talking out loud to yourself. That doesn't mean he's being rude to you. That means you are projecting and being insensitive to a good guy. He worked like mad for me each time I was in. He kept trying to bring me in under budget and explained and even apologized for every minor cost. The world is a wide place and there are lots of different people in it. Get used to it. That's what makes the world more interesting. Local businesses need your support. I will continue to give my support here.

About 15 years ago, due to a running injury, my Primary Care Physician suggested that I start biking. So I bought a 10 year-old high-end bike on EBAY and when it came, I brought it to the nearest bike shop I could find, Phil Beauchamp's Green Mountain Cyclery. Frankly, I purchased this particular bike it because the manufacturer's name on the bike is the same as my own. And at about 10 years old, it was fairly inexpensive for a bike with Shimano 105/Ultegra components.. I was quick to admit to Phil that I didn't know much, that I had never like biking and my plan was to do this only until my knee had recovered enough so that I could begin running again. He told me that in his experience a lot of runners turned to cycling and that after a while, some even come to like their bikes. This bike (at 53) was a little small for me (at 5'9") and it came partially disassembled in need of some work. I told Phil that I was not a mechanic and that I committed to this bike (besides, I thought, I wouldn't be riding it for very long anyway. Spoiler alert: after another knee injury I turned to cycling full time and averaged about 100 miles/week for the summer). Phil assembled it for a very reasonable price and then watched for a few minutes while I rode it around the parking lot. Then he asked me to come back after closing so he could have the time without interruption to make some adjustments that would make the bike a better fit. It took about an hour with me pedaling on the trainer and Phil making adjustments and explaining what he was doing and why he was doing it. I learned more from Phil during that time than I had in all the reading I had done. And it was free. Since that time, I have purchased two similar bikes for my kids as well as two hard tail mountain bikes, all on Ebay. And in each case, I have asked Phil to assemble and make the proper fit. Each bike remains currently in use and Phil has done all of the routine maintenance (okay, my daughter has had one of the hard tails in Utah for the past year, so I don't know what she's done... Phil boxed it and mailed it to her, again, at a very reasonable price). And sure, I often thought I should buy a Schwinn from Phil, but my name isn't Schwinn. In my experience, Phil is passionate about bikes and he talks rapidly about bikes, sports, news, almost anything. Phil's a reader and very astute. He may not always make warm and comfortable eye contact in conversation and it may be hard to match his intensity, but has never said or done anything in my presence that I would consider to be rude. Sometimes, when he with with a customer, I've had to wait 15 or 20 minutes to get his attention to my issue of the day. But it's always been worth the wait. I have been amazed by Phil's breadth of knowledge as well as his willingness to share it. I learn something every time I go into the store, even some good routes. On the other hand, I have seen people in his shop who understandably want their bikes repaired as quickly as possible behave toward Phil in a way that made me glad I was in a different line of work. About a year ago, I moved about 60 miles away. He did the routine maintenance on my bikes in the spring. Yesterday, I drove to his bike shop, just to show him the bike and ask a few questions. So. If you are patient, if you want to tap into the knowledge base of a gifted bike mechanic for reasonable prices, I would highly recommend Green Mountain Cyclery.

(Marty saved me so much time and $$; I got everything I needed in one place, on my way to the mountain :) I initially came in just to have my binding settings adjusted, but after talking with me extensively about my skiing habits, reviewing all the binding guidelines, and discussing my strong desire to not incur knee injuries (lol), we decided to leave the settings as they were. Marty had thoroughly checked the binding release action on both points of both skis, and I had the benefit of his expertise, so I expected to pay at least something for that, but he declined any payment. So, I took the opportunity to have him give my skis a much-needed sharpening and wax, which he did, by hand, in about 20-30 minutes. We had a very nice chat while he worked; he's got all the local insider info about Killington and the area! He asked where I was off to next, and I explained that I was going to goodwill to try to find a cheap ski jacket, having forgotten mine as it was hung in a closet rather than bagged with the rest of my gear, and I was happy to discover that he also rents ski jackets- a too-well-kept secret! Don't expect anything fancy, but if you want something to keep you warm, for only $10/day, come here!! Later on, as I worked my way down some classic early-season black diamond trails, with generally great conditions but also the usual skiied-off areas, and my friends talked about how icy the trails were, I realized that the edge sharpening had made a huge difference for me! Cannot recommend this place enough for its value, service, and awesome vintage vibe!!

I have alpine skied many times and thought other than not going down hills and using a lift how much different can this be!? I thought why do I need to spend money on lessons? Those of you who have done this before are probably like, yup that guy is naive...let's just say I was so glad I did the lessons. Speaking of lessons our instruction was phenomenal. He made it so easy for us to understand and build on the basics. He has been XC-skiing professionally and recreationally for 60 years. I hope I am in as good as shape and able to do what he was doing then I am 70. Very thankful for his time and the lessons are well worth it. We went on the first day of the season (we were only in town a limited time), some snow had been blown in and the snowfall that had occurred days prior was icy. All of the trails were not open either, which ended up being perfectly fine as we had plenty of fun learning how to stay in the carved our tracks and keep our balance. I surprising did not fall, but came awfully close. 10/10 would recommend, even if you have never done many snow sports. It is a workout but exhilarating!

You take 125 down and if you start seeing a lot of mustard yellow homes flanking either side of the road, then you have reached the right place. They have miles and miles of beautifully groomed trails and they also can make man-made snow - which is useful early in the season. You really feel right in the middle of the Green Mts! In terms of service, the staff is incredibly warm and helpful. In the entrance way, they even offer a little soup and cocoa station. The soups are always delicious ... and most importantly warm. They also have strong vegetarian options, which is considerate. I also saw folks snow biking around ... which looks like a blast!
