Although I'm happy with the many haircuts I've received here, there seems to be a couple barbers here that make up their own prices. 2 occasions they charged me $1 more than the regular $20. Barber said the 1st time that it's for extra work which is impossible for just a trim. This last time he said the prices went up and just a few minutes earlier a different barber rung up a customer and said $20. What's going on here?! The reason I'm giving a 1 star review though is after the cut I realized Phong charged me for an adult haircut and not a kids haircut. I'm giving a two star review because my husband took my son the first three times and he was charged $12 each time for a kids cut. Today I took my son alone and I was charged $17. I was looking for a legitimate barber in the Virginia area. I called around and tried-out different places. I decided to try-out Greenbriar because of location, reviews, and pictures. When I arrived, the tall thin Asian gentleman greeted and sat me immediately. He was very pleasant. He asked me want I wanted, and he gave me exactly what I wanted. He took his time and used great technique with razors. I got a faded shape-up with a hard-part. The only things that could have been better would have been using a straight blade razor for the hard-part and edging, not blowing my hair all over and in my shoes, and using top products for skin and hair. Whenever I'm in the area visiting my family, I make a point to get my hair cut here. In fact, I'll plan a haircut around my visits, because getting a haircut in my hometown can be a real pain with parking and having to wait. I should point out that I keep my hair very low. But, what I like most, is the ability of the barbers in this shop to take time and make sure that your receive a quality cut. I notice that a lot of younger patrons in this shop receive a variety of rather complicated haircuts that the barbers are exceptionally capable of completing. At the time of this review, an adult hair cut is $17. I've been here about eight times over the last six months, and always receive a fast quality haircut. (Bobby and Minh have always hooked me up right). Sorry to see below that Luciana A was sponged on the price of her son. As far as the negative picture requests, I'd take that with a grain a salt, because looking like a picture isn't always possible. (When you're getting your hair cut, you should interact with your barber if you feel that you're not getting what you want, if getting what you want is actually feasible - as much as people can complain about barbers, they have valid complaints about patrons). read more

I have extremely thick, coarse, and wavy hair, so I need my barber to listen to me and to plan out what they're going to do before they do it. I didn't catch the name of the guy who just butchered my hair because he never once looked me in the eye or introduced himself. I'd been growing my hair for some six months, and it had gotten pretty big and crazy. I asked him to take it up significantly in the back, to cut a bit on the sides, and to clean up the top slightly. The first thing he did after combing my hair out was to pull out the clippers. This made me anxious, but since I'd said to take a lot off the back, I didn't think it would be an issue. Then, without saying anything, he shaved off my sideburns and started shaving around the ear. I asked how much he was taking off, and when he turned me toward the mirror, I said it was way too much (some 3" of hair). I asked him not to cut it any shorter than he already had. Rather than apologizing and asking me to reiterate what I wanted, pointed out, "You said around the ear," referring to when I thought he was asking if I wanted him to trim around my ears, and I had answered, "Yes." I told him to clean up the rest of my hair enough to transition into what he'd already done. After that, I ended the haircut, paid the $16, and left--first time in my life that I haven't tipped the person cutting my hair. Wow. After one good visit, my husband went back and was butchered (literally) by these people. It makes me sad to give them one star but not only did they leave my husbands hair too long after he asked the barber twice to make it shorter, they left him with cuts all over his head. First my husband told me they cut his ear and yep, I saw a small cut right on the top of his earlobe. Looked painful. But then, my husband casually asked me if the back of his neck was cut. O. M.G. I have never seen a cut from a barber that was as bad as this one. The "barber" used a straight razor to shave his neck and SLICED it bad. The barber didn't even apologize or tell my husband about it (at the time, my husband just felt a small sting) and when my husband got home, the cut had crusted, dark red dried blood all over it. Unsanitary, rude, and unprofessional. Accidents happen but my husband should have been told, the cut should have been cleaned and not wiped off with a presumably used and dirty towel. The "barber" didn't bother to tell my husband about this and was rewarded with a generous tip because my husband is a nice person. To add insult to injury: a few hours later I noticed that one of my husbands sideburns was a good inch longer than the other. Cray. Never again, sorry but it was a bad (and painful) experience the second time around. *****UPDATE: 6/14/13***** It has been well over a year since my review of Greerbrier barber shop and 3 days ago I received this threatening message in my Yelp inbox from someone named "Noble G": "Your going to get Sued: Greenbrier Barber Shop. I would like your address, or I can have our attorney find it. You defamed our place of business via a comment on YELP, and we are going to take you to court for it. Give me your address please, thank you." In over 4 years of Yelp reviews, I've never been threatened by a business owner. My review is 100% truthful and honest. I have no interest or reason to say anything untruthful about anyone. We have rights as consumers and Americans to report our experiences at places of business (including bad experiences!) and that is the POINT of Yelp. My review is staying up in the interest of free speech. I was visiting from the UK and after reading the reviews of Yelp decided to try greenbrier for a haircut. My hair is not curly like the other disgruntled reviewer. After explaining what I wanted he just totally disregarded it. When I got into the car I managed to get a closer look at my haircut and that's where the problems began. My bangs were wonky all the way along, one side of my head hadn't been shaved properly, and to top it off the sides of my hairline was much higher than it should be. I went back inside and showed him my the wonkyness of the bangs and didn't even get an apology just an 'ok' from the guy as he sat me down. I once again explained how I wanted it cut and let him attempt to fix it. After another 5-10 minutes of shaving and trimming I just nodded and walked out, the damage was done. I got home, washed it out and then realised once again my bangs were wonky. On top the hair was a good inch difference in length from left to right and just in general the haircut was horrendously poor. The fact I didn't even get an apology or any acknowledgement on top of the shocking quality means I wouldn't even send my worst enemy here. The fact the entire staff looked so disinterested hardly filled me with confidence. I pay less than $13 at home for a good haircut, so expected at least the guy to do a fairly simply guys cut. read more

They know their men's cuts and know how to do an undercut well. They all seem knowledgable on how to line the cuts up but their techniques seem to vary. I got Ben though with the hair cutting grace of a wrestler. The cut was great and he listened to exactly what I wanted, it was just a lot of pain to go from point A to B, and i got a cut on my neck. I'd still recommend this place to anyone that wants men's cuts especially undercuts for a low price but I just probably wouldn't recommend Ben unless they have an unusually high pain tolerance, which I do. Ben, if you read this, please be gentler on your clients. The hair is great what you did was great, it was fantastic! But the experience while I was there could've been used to interrogate me for information. Either way, I'll be returning for my haircuts there. Ps. This barber is cash only. Roughly $15-18 +tip. I forgot to bring cash but they were nice enough to trust me to get some cashback from the 7/11 next door. This is one of the few mainstays of the Greenbriar Shopping Center!!! Nice place for a trim. New ownership, same look... All told, I've never had a "bad" haircut from this joint. Some of the barbers do a better job than others, but they all give a good cut. Price is great, even better if you get a barber who is not in a hurry. Chair one is the best service, but there is usually a wait. Don't listen to the reviewers that are comparing this shop to the "trendy" shops that have popped up in the past years. Apples and oranges! **I DO NOT RECOMMEND BEN** I've been coming to this place for the past 2 years and have always had a good experience with a fair price. I typically come in about once a month and have had my hair cut by most of the guys there. Minh and Danny are especially good, but today they were busy and I decided to try someone else which was Ben. He gave me the typical small talk greeting, devoid of emotion, which usually doesn't phase me. I'm the type of person who doesn't need the extra pampering and if you do your job well, you get a solid 25% tip. What bothered me was when he asked me how I wanted my hair cut. I've been getting the same cut for the past 3 years. It's a pretty basic cut and probably quite common with people my age: The standard comb over with a hard part, "1" on the sides with a low fade, but for me a bit of the top and go around with thinning shears because my hair is thick. I explained it to him and he pompously responded with "You don't want a low fade, too short" like I was a child. I insisted that is what I have been getting every time. Even if I wanted a ridiculous 80's style haircut and am paying for it, shouldn't I receive it to the best of the barber's ability? After Ben was done (the first time around), he showed me the cut. I was not satisfied because he cut too much off the top and the sides were clearly not down to a "1" resulting with my hair resembling a mix between an amazonian native bowl cut and a Bichon Frise, a poof ball if you will. His demeanor, when I nicely asked him to cut down the sides to a low fade (because what can he do if too much is already lopped off the top), was as if he caught me sleeping with his partner but had to keep a professional face on, or whatever his poor definition of professionalism is. He said that if "wanted a low fade, all of it would be low" (which was exactly what I asked for and how I wanted it). He gave me a clear "What is wrong with you?" type of face and proceeded to take the clippers and recklessly go over the sides (forget about the fade, maybe next month somewhere else). He then cleaned up my neck and edges with a straight razor which did more scraping of skin than it did with hair. (luckily not deep enough without bleeding) After the 2nd time Ben showed me my hair there were clear large sections that needed to be evened out. I brought it up and he gave an eye-roll combined with a sigh which only embarrassed teenagers can give their fathers. His reaction was as if he was a celebrity barber and I was wasting his time, but there was no line for him nor walk-ins, just customers waiting for their specific barbers/appointments and I can understand why. At this point in order to avoid a possible clipped ear, I decided to say it was "fine" in which he replied with a curt "16 Dollars". I handed the lackluster excuse of a barber $20 bill and left ASAP because there was a clearly built tension with Ben. Don't get me wrong, I currently work in the service industry and have been for the past 4 years. I know it's not the most glamorous when it comes to daily morale, especially regarding petty complaints/requests of customers, it can definitely bring you down. I understand it's tough and maybe it was just a bad day for Ben, but in attempt, even a half-hearted attempt, to ensure your customers coming back, maybe acknowledging when you were wrong would help. Especially with the mixed Yelp reviews of this place featuring defamation lawsuits for any reviews less than 3 stars. If I didn't just get a botched haircut from a remorseless butcher of a barber, I would have rated this business at least 4 stars. But that is not the case. I'm not sure if I will return in the future or try somewhere else. But one thing is certain: I know my hair will come back, but not my business to Ben. tl,dr: I DO NOT RECOMMEND BEN.
