I never asked for their services but they charged my City bank card which I got when i bought my computer from best buy and canceled it right away by calling best buy. Now City bank is telling me to dispute the charge. when I call Green Geeks billing and give them my name they tell me we can't find your account by your last name and ask me to email billing. I just don't know why she could not help me and asked me to send an email except the fact that they want to make it so difficult so one tiers and doesn't try to get the credit. Hosting has always been good. However, their customer service makes it difficult to stick around. They do not make anything convenient for you. I had and SSL that I told them to cancel and they didn't, then they charged me for it and told me it was too late to get a refund. I refuted the charge with my bank who luckily sided with me and got me my money back. Today I was talking to them about having upgraded my plan to a $16.95.month pro plan but was charged $24.95. The support I was talking to told me that the $24.95 was an upgrade fee and I would be charged $16.95 tomorrow. After arguing for a bit the $24.95, according to them, is the difference between the remaining 36 month plan I bought and the new one, which made way more sense and they said I will not be charged $16.95 tomorrow. We'll see... I told them that I didn't want the plan to renew for 36 months to which the support told me that I should contact them later before it renews to keep that from happening. I don't know of any place that forces you to remember to change the renewal, and I can't think of any that default to 36 months renewal either. They only keep SSL certs alive for 3 months at a time requiring you to go in an renew the cert. This is ridiculous. Every other provider keeps your site up for a full year. Go somewhere else. read more

I am a lawyer. It is my professional opinion, based on my law firm's experience with GreenGeeks, that this company is running a bait-and-switch scheme that violates the law of contract in addition to consumer protection legislation. My advice: STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS. GreenGeeks advertises unlimited e-mails and unlimited storage on its website. What it actually means by "unlimited" is that "storage is very limited, but we call it 'unlimited' in order to lure people in to use our services." Its "Acceptable Use Policy," which GreenGeeks reserves the right to change at any time, with no notice to the customer, is that you are not allowed to use any more than 10GB of storage space and not allowed to keep any e-mails for longer than 30 days. Seriously. What they offer is THAT limited, and calling it "unlimited" is incredibly misleading. One of their customer service representatives even argued that they do not advertise e-mail services on their website at all -- which is a blatant lie, given that their website very clearly DOES offer e-mail services and I have been in contact with their tech support department on many occasions because their e-mail servers were not working correctly and we were unable to send or receive e-mails as a result. It has been incredibly disruptive to our business to not have reliable e-mail servers. Recently, with NO notice whatsoever, GreenGeeks disabled all of my firm's e-mail addresses, saying that were were "abusing" its servers by keeping e-mails for longer than 30 days and using more than 10GB of storage space. After we threatened to sue them -- we sue people and corporations like this one for a living, after all -- they temporarily restored access to our accounts. Now, just this morning, GreenGeeks DELETED all of our e-mails older than one year from its server, and backed them up into a tarball that it says it will delete as well in 7 days. So, now we cannot even search for older e-mails through our IMAP e-mail interface. We are required to keep our legal records for a minimum of 10 years, though it is good practice to keep them for 15 years or longer. We have a lot of confidential and legally relevant e-mails that GreenGeeks has just gone ahead and deleted to save itself some money, even though WE PAID to have these e-mails stored on GreenGeeks' servers. GreenGeeks has also said that it reserves the right to take any other actions it deems necessary to reduce our e-mail usage, without notice, UNLESS we agree to pay for a plan that is over TEN TIMES more expensive than the one for which we signed up. This is extortion. I explained the various problems with what GreenGeeks has done and threatened to do. Its representative did not care and simply wrote that they will not consider such legal arguments or negotiation via e-mails to its help desk, online chat, or by telephone, and will only discuss such matters by physical letter mailed to its address in Delaware. By the way, its address in Delaware is fake. I found out that it is just an "Anytime Mailbox," meaning that GreenGeeks pays another company to receive mail for it in Delaware, even though GreenGeeks itself does not have an office at that address. Of course, I now want a refund. Their refund policy is weak, however, saying that you need to request a refund within 30 days of the service's start date. I would have happily done so if GreenGeeks caused so many serious problems within the first thirty days, but it did not; it waited until we were about 11 months into our 36-month contract to seriously restrict the services for which we paid already in a lump sum. GreenGeeks put a provision in its Terms of Service saying that any legal disputes have to be resolved in the State of Delaware. That is illegal. A company that does business in Ontario, which GreenGeeks clearly does, is subject to Ontario's Consumer Protection Act and also subject to the jurisdiction of the Ontario Courts as a result. Again, I beseech you to AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS. We will be suing it in the near future, and for good reason. read more

Then they tried to tell me I was past my cancellation period. Unbelievably terrible customer service. As many others have noted, this company makes it virtually impossible to stop service once you've found that their initial pricing is far less than renewal pricing. I found a new service that was 1/2 the price of GreenGeeks automatic renewal. There is nothing on their website allowing you to cancel service. Instead you have to contact them to fill out a form (note best business practices and soon the law may require shops like this to make is as easy to stop service as it is to start). I filled out the form hit "submit" and the screen went blank. Thought that was an odd "goodbye" but then a lot of ppl are not good with goodbye. 10 days later I get a notice that my service has been renewed. I contacted the company via chat and they said that they could see I cancelled my service but then rescinded the cancellation (FALSE!). They then added that since I did not cancel 5 days prior to the renewal that I had to pay for service that I was no longer using. Avoid this company! read more

It states that the rate is $12.95 per month (as stated on https://mangomattermedia.com as well) and nowhere does the site indicate that one has to sign on for a 2-year term to get that rate until the final point of payment. That is not right -- in fact, that stinks! I brought it up to the sales agent, Ashton, who assured me that it is a common sales technique used by folks in that industry and other online companies. "Everything Unlimited" is far from being unlimited... We have been GreenGeeks customers for over 5 years and out of the blue they had revised their plans in the background. New inode limits set at 150K caused our account to get flagged and forced upsell conversation with the support started. Until today, they never officially announced or informed about this change to their existing users. Neither do they list this information within the plan details. So, lesson learnt, GreenGeeks ToS allows them to do whatever, whenever, without any limits. They are the only and last arbitrator to rule over their ToS, which quite frankly is a bad joke. To top all this up, we have more than a year left in our billing cycle, which GreenGeeks refuses to refund, yet they are happy to close our account. Fair deal? TLDR; BE AWARE OF UNJUST BUSINESS PRACTICES AND SKETCHY TOS. read more

You will not have access to your account information: knowing when things expire, the ability to turn off auto renew, etc. Everything is done via ticket and when there is an issue, especially when it comes to billing, they will do nothing to assist - merely redirect you to a long list of terms and conditions. I recently moved a custom developed website, from my hosting to their end, and all of a sudden they suspended the website claiming files are infected. Now when i talked to the support they have told me it might be that! Might???- the website is working just fine on my other hosting. There appears to be some troubling false advertising going on with this company. We've had a VPS with them for about a year, and their sales page for their VPS product still says "FREE Nightly Backup - Unlike our competitors, we backup data on your VPS nightly. You can feel safe knowing that we've got you covered in the event of a disaster scenario." Fast forward to last week, when we had a serious problem with database corruption that could have been easily solved by rolling back to the latest nightly backup. We contacted support, and were told "We do not take full system backups for VPS since these are unmanaged services." We sorted it out with our own recent backups, but we've been paying for a service (Nightly Backups) that was never provided. We've since moved to a new host, that actually performs nightly backups, and we've seen noticeable improvements to performance as well. We've also got twice the server resources for $5/month less than we were paying to GreenGeeks. read more

I just raised my rating above, after trying Godaddy, which nickel and dimes you to death with new surprise charges after everything you do - which Greengeeks does not do. My goodness, GreenGeeks only gets a one and a half star rating. I have kinda a love-hate relationship with Greengeeks, equally divided. They're in Agoura, where - many years ago - I was on retainer with a design firm that later became a part of BMW; since then I moved to Austin TX. With one exception - and actually that was an important exception, since it messed me and my business up for a very long time - their tech support has been completely great. I would hate to make them feel unappreciated - as long as we forgot the one guy who tortured me for no reason. Yet their billing department is genuinely, actually "Darth Vader"... far as I'm concerned, truly evil. At this moment, they're screwed me up - intentionally, I believe - to such an extent that I wish I could go somewhere else if only I could find the time. They are kinda pricey with their domain charges, but I figured, never mind about how they continued to increase their various website charges as long as they actually provided their promised SSL service. Not so. Leaving aside that for years at that point they had been charging me for a service they refused to acknowledge that they were not providing in the first place - this year, after several years of their forcing me to pay for an SSL service I was clearly and demonstratively not receiving - for the first time they actually provided me with the service they had charged me for years - even though I was clearly, unequivocally not getting the service they kept charging me - for years. But now I had it. What was wrong with their business people to put me through such absolutely horrible torture for so many years? My guess is - that at least one of the people in billing - and possibly the whole department - is a total *.* who decided to charge me for stuff that I absolutely did not owe - e.g., everyone I chatted with in tech support confirmed I performed all the necessary transactions to cancel domains I didn't need and had completed the transactions. But the billings guy must have been really pissed off - he certainly responded to me at all times with a machismo attitude. And immediately after that tanked my website -- despite my having paid for a three year web hosting contract - and then did so again. Never mind that the techs told me I had done everything necessary, and besides that I had changed those ancillary domains to a "non-renewable" basis, they decided to charge me anyway because there was some kinda step that no one had told me about. So I have come to absolutely hate their billing people (fwiw, my example above was just one of many). Added to that, I am certain that after our dispute that the billings creep repeatedly blocked my DNS to take my website down. (Why otherwise did my website keep tanking when it had never done so before after many years - and my website was taken down started immediately ) But for the record, I really value their tech support people - after overlooking the jerk who messed me up for two years. The customer service is absolutely horrible! Once my 1-year hosting service was up, Green Geeks deleted my website and all of the content. The only thing that remained was the domain. I cancelled the domain about a week or so again, confirmed the cancellation and they were still reaching out to me about confirming to cancel the domain and proceeded to renew the domain. When I told them I already cancelled the domain, they were rude and persistent that I go through the cancellation process again. I get companies are not perfect but the people in customer service or non-accommodating to customers and very rude. read more

Any time I've had a question or concern, their 24/7 chat feature has worked perfectly for me. I also love knowing that my website is hosted by a company that offsets energy usage by purchasing 3x the amount of energy their services consume in wind energy credits. Very deceptive advertising with their 30-day money back policy. I paid $45.35, cancelled two days later, they refunded me $6.45. Why? "Your account was eligible for 30 days money back guarantee in the amount of $6.45. Refunds may take up to 3-5 business days to show up on your bank statement. The remaining balance of $38.90 was held to cover the following expenses in accordance with our Terms of Service. $13.95 Domain Registration $9.95 ID Protect $15 Account Setup Fee" When I tried to argue this, they stated that it was in their ToS. Here's their very specific ToS: "In addition refunds are not available for additional services such as, but not limited to domain names, dedicated IP's, SSL certifiates, CDN, professional services, etc. Add-on services that are activated and are included in the hosting package will not be refundable if cancelled within 30-days." In their ToS, there is absolutely NO MENTION of an account setup fee, and those add-on services they refer to -- you don't get a choice about those when you take the 30-day money back deal. I have used about 5 different hosting services in my life; this is by far the best value for the money. I have been a customer with them for 2009. I've used it mainly for wordpress and drupal. The prices are pretty rock bottom, but surprisingly, their tech support is prompt, responsive, knowledgeable and very helpful. Recently, I got an unusual amount of hand-holding from them about an SSL certificate -- what a nice surprise. A few years ago they were very pro-active in helping customers to use Cloudflare to prevent attacks on wordpress blogs. I was happy to hear from them that you could use Cloudflare to set up a free SSL certificate using cpanel. I've filed tickets for special things (SSH, SSL, maybe a few other things), and generally things have resolved well. Over the years, we've had small disagreements about billing, but they were always resolved quickly. They use a standard cpanel with some php scripts that auto-install and upgrade. Shared hosting plans have finite amount of RAM and CPU, but for my three or four low traffic sites, I have rarely had issues. (In fact, I think I was alerted once or twice from them about abnormal RAM use and ways to address the problem -- that is actually not a bad thing that they are monitoring these things). This service may not be for everyone's needs, but so far I've never needed to upgrade from a shared hosting plan. I hear horror stories all the time about low-priced hosting, but this company so far has provided great support, plus they use 100% renewable energy. Horray! read more

Bought the service for a non-profit I'm running with my partner, and we chose them becuase of the "300% green energy" thing. So that's all fine and good, and their hosting itself is okay. But there's a MAJOR untruth when they say, "Get a website set up in 5 minutes!" It's a nightmare process. They have THREE interfaces you are required to log into and then set up just to have a Wordpress site: The GreenGeeks hosting control panel, a second dashboard where you set up permissions for the Wordpress site, and then the third Wordpress dashboard. Also, their customer service is maddeningly inefficient. Nick V. gets a callout as the most unhelpful CSR on their team. He (and most other reps we've dealt with) make any number of assumptions that you understand exactly what they're talking about. He will shoot you an answer that, unless you're a system admin or database administrator, probably won't make any sense to you. He had my partner in tears when she was trying to migrate our domain from G-Suite over to GreenGeeks because he lacks both the ability to translate tech speak into simple terms AND the ability to help. I also realized that they must not know their own cPanel options. I was trying to change my email server and they said to "select MX Options from cPanel." There WAS no "MX Options," and I was getting really frustrated, and then realized that I had to access MX records through "Email Routing." So these guys are giving us tech support information with BAD INFORMATION. We finally got in touch with Laura in their sales department, and she was massively more helpful. She walked us through the different processes we needed to follow and checked in to see how things were going. So she is the diamond in the rough. If the green energy thing is a must for you, then I guess consider them. But do it at your own risk, and be prepared to deal with completely indifferent support staff. read more

I normally wouldn't write a review for getting what I paid for. What pushed me over the edge here was I needed support on an issue. Hosting works fine; business practices are shite. I'm not looking forward to the cancellation process. My credit card expired and the payment declined. They took down my site immediately - no notification or grace period. Had to jump through hoops to get it back up. Site users weren't able to log in - an additional security popup was appearing, asking for credentials I didn't have. Spent a few hours messing with site plugins and googling the problem. Finally asked Greengeeks: "it's an additional security protocol we installed for your safety." "But none of my site users can log in. Why didn't you notify me?" "Have them use Firefox. It will work then." "That's not a solution. I can't tell my site users just to use one browser." "Well, we need to keep your site secure." "I need my site to work. Please remove it." Their servers are down rather frequently and support is severely lacking. Site load times off their servers are horrendous. Worst website hosting company ever. I had a site with them for a few years and experienced the worst customer support but because I paid in advance for two years I kept them. When my contract was up, I didn't renew immediately. Then they offered me via email 50% discount on renewal. I said ok and tried to renew but instead of being able to use the discount I saw a penalty fee. I called them, credit card in hand, ready to take them up on their offer and they said that I needed to send in a ticket. I did. They never responded and deleted my website and all my emails. I called them to follow up on my ticket and process the transaction and they told me they couldn't because the site had already been deleted. I used their services for 2 years and their hosting worked ok. I didn't experience any downtime. However, when the time came to renew my account, I decided not to renew as I didn't need the website anymore. Greengeeks provides a link in their invoicing notification to cancel service, and I followed their instructions exactly to cancel before the renewal deadline. However, 'cancelling' service simply opens a trouble ticket with their billing department. I received this message in an email: Hello, I would like to extend a discounted offer of 50% off on your next month renewal invoice. Also, if you have any issues with the services, you can let me know and we will assign you one of our agents who will resolve any issues that you might be facing. Greg F. GreenGeeks Support Team Certainly this doesn't state that 'respond or you'll be charged.' Also, I stated as my reason for non-renewal that I didn't need the site, not that it was too expensive. Well, when I didn't respond ONE DAY LATER, they charged me the full amount for 2 years renewal, even though I already cancelled! They didn't even charge me the 50% they'd been offering! They charged the full amount on a Sunday, and now it's Monday and I'm spending my time trying to get a refund. I'm now working through a lawyer to resolve this, but long story short there are WAY too many other hosting services to mess around with a company this shady. Stay away! read more

Green Geeks are great until something goes wrong - and it does. Our company was let down in a big way twice by Green Geeks. Due to our experience with them we have invested in up-time monitoring so we know when Green Geeks have our site go down. Even with the monitoring, when our site disappeared for 8 hours, it was up to us to ask why, and we found that Green Geeks had moved our site to a different server - without notice. They had already done that before, but without monitoring we discovered it days later. The worst thing is that Green Geeks don't tell you about their problems - despite telling you in support emails that they did. They also don't honour their up time guarantee. For example, they owed me a service credit (which they only apply to future purchases) however on my future purchase they did not apply the credit. When I asked about it they had some silly reason about paypal why it was not applied. It's just mickey mouses stuff with these guys. Overall experience: Contacting support is a waste of time. They don't stand by their uptime guarantee. You may find your site has vanished randomly with them and it won't come back on it's own without you doing technical stuff. But they are friendly in their communications with you. WARNING - There is NO WAY I would use these guys. I've never seen this kind of problem in over 18 years of hosting web sites. We are setting up hosting with AWS as we've had rock solid experiences with them and it's all under our control. read more

I cannot recommend this business for your needs - there are so many reputable hosting providers to choose from I would advise that you exercise that choice. Their service was just fine, inexpensive, and easy to use for what I needed. I really liked the idea of "green" power sources. However, the problem is with their customer service and billing. I signed up for a 3-year term and actually stopped using the service after 1 year due to a decision to retain a managed hosting provider for the site. I did not cancel because I did not know if I might leverage their service again in the future. When my billing cycle came due they automatically charged my card. I was on vacation and did not receive the email that indicated they would be doing so 7 days before. So, simple mistake and they'll make it right... or so I would think. Their reply when I explained this situation as asked for a partial refund... they sent the terms of service to me and indicated that it is my fault I was on vacation and missed their automatic message. After this point I brought up the matter to my credit card company, explained the situation, and they agreed to help. When alerting Green Geeks to this, they responded with a threat of sending me to collections and charging huge extra fees. And all this over $178.20 for 3 years of service. As I had only missed the cancellation cutoff by 10 days when I contacted them, I even offered for them to keep $50 as I admit that I am at least partially responsible here - way more than enough to cover expenses. When all was said and done, they decided that I should pay $80 for the 10 days of service and they refunded the rest. A company who provides good service would stand behind their customer's needs and help. A company who cares about their customers would have, at most, charged a minimal fee to cover expenses and apologized for the misunderstanding. A company who wants great word of mouth would have understood that the good will they gain by being helpful far outweighs the minor cost reversing a credit card transaction. The moral of the story... GREEN GEEKS IS NOT THAT COMPANY. If you are interested in "green" hosting with reasonable service costs, consider them. But to me, the other potential issues are not worth the bother. read more

For a long time, I really liked Green Geeks but then I noticed a charge on my bank card and realized they don't have a way of turning off auto-renewal on accounts. I spoke to customer service and they offered 30% future purchases but said they couldn't offer any kind of refund because of the "Terms of Service." It's just B.S., Of course,​ they can offer a refund. This made me move all my services elsewhere. read more

Highly misleading. I was lured in by the offer of a free domain transfer, so I was surprised to be charged. When I asked for an explanation, it turned out that there were conditions I'd failed to meet (still unclear on exactly what these were). I know, I know...I should have been more careful. No backing out though. It turns out the service can be canceled, but the charge stands, regardless of whether the service is performed or not. You'll get a credit toward your "next bill."Not something that's going to be happening anytime soon, obviously. So read the fine print, maybe you can get a deal--but don't count on much in the way of support or customer service. read more

They ran my card for renewal BEFORE the invoice date. Then, refused to refund. I asked to cancel the service, and was told that renewals could only be cancelled 5 days before the renewal date. STAY AWAY!!! Update: After I had to contact the BBB, they decided to proceed with my cancellation and refund. Upgrading review from 1 to 3 stars, but I don't know why it had to get to that point. They need to take another look at their policies. read more

Not a company you want to do business with after knowing how they treat customers. Make sure you remove your credit card from the system. They auto charge you crazy fees and just say read the fine print. Then they change the fine print. I hope this review saves a few people from them. read more

The servers were always down. The support tickets said they were down because of spam so a Green Geeks technician advised I upgrade VPS, which I did. The servers were back up for a day or so and then back down. Really. And It get's better! I sent emails requesting cancellation, and they said I had to go through a formal process, which is basically a stall technique while they charged my credit card again. Now I have my bank involved trying to get my refund back. After researching I found that I am not the only person having this problem. I found an independent study of 34 hosting sites, Green Geeks was 21/34 in uptime. Not good. read more
