This was our first time in Amsterdam and we wanted to try some authentic Dutch food for our first dinner. We Yelped for the area and Hap Hmm came up as a place that locals frequent and has good reviews. On their business card, it says: "Specialist in Hollands eten!" which is just what we wanted. We are so happy we went here as the food was delicious and the place was pretty busy with lots of friends chatting with the staff as regulars do. The staff was super friendly and always checking up on us. I had the waitress-recommended Runderlap + gebakken aardappel. If you don't read Dutch (like me!) it was a Hap Hmm specialty family recipe from 1965 and was essentially stewed beef. I was super tender and served in a thick sauce that made me savor every bit. My daughter had the Vegetarian schnitzel and my wife had the prize winning Wienerschnitzel. I tasted each and they all were super tasty. The meals came with sides that included spinach, Fava beans (I think) and a ratatouille. Hap Humm really emphasizes quality home made foods with time tested family recipes and great service. I will definitely return here next time I'm in Amsterdam.

Best place for authentic Dutch food! Came here for our first night in Amsterdam. Good service and big portions.

Atmosphere: Hap Hmm is a cozy restaurant with a small interior. There did not seem to be many tourists when we went. The lighting inside was dim and romantic, perfect for an intimate meal. Service: We made a reservation in advance through email, though there weren't many people at the restaurant. Our server was prompt with taking our order. Though there was a bit of a language barrier, we were still able to communicate and ask questions about the food. Hap Hmm doesn't take card, so make sure you bring cash! Food: We ordered the specialty Beef Stew and the Beer Chicken, as well as a Brouwerij 't IJ beer. The meal came with sides of various vegetables, including carrots, peas, and broccoli, and a big bowl of mashed potatoes. The chicken and beef were both very tender and flavorful, but were stewed in a broth that was a bit too salty and heavy for our liking. The sides by themselves weren't stellar or of top quality but went well with the meats. The beer, per our server's recommendation, paired nicely with the deep flavors of the stews. Overall: We liked Hap Hmm's atmosphere, and the food was filling. However, we felt that the restaurant was a bit overhyped, as we essentially got a simple meal of meat and potatoes. We would look to explore other restaurants due to our personal taste preferences, but Hap Hmm seems like a great place to try traditional Dutch food.

Home cooking done expertly. No frills in the best way, the food spoke for itself. The schnitzel and the beef stew were among the best we've ever had. This small restaurant felt homey in the best way and the service was excellent. Definitely worth a shot to try danish home cooking.

In A Nutshell: -Hap Hmm is the place where true locals go to grab an authentic Dutch meal. -Several reviews have recommended making a reservation, but I was able to walk in as soon as they opened at 5pm. -I did hear the phone ring several times from people calling to make reservations for later times, so if you decide to eat a late dinner, I would advise calling ahead. -I met this man who has been eating nearly everyday here, he was super nice & I sat down to eat dinner/chat. -The family that works there is very kind, I felt like I was invited into their house for dinner. -The menu is short & simple. -I first ordered the Dutch Shrimp Salad (the tiny shrimp are fresh from the North Sea), it was served a small glass cup w/ some greens & dressing. -My main course was the Viennese Schnitzel which comes w/ a side of boiled or roasted potatoes & peas/carrots. -I love eating schnitzel when I visit Europe & theirs did not disappoint :) -The boiled potatoes & peas/carrots paired perfectly. Overall, the prices aren't bad, very affordable & the entire dining experience was very homely.

I ate at this restaurant with my family during our stay in Amsterdam in mid-October. While service left a bit to be desired the first time, it was good during our second visit, and I felt taken cared of in an intimate setting. The area is kinda off the beaten path in Amsterdam, which also gives it a bit of its charm. Apple Maps would direct you to get off at Leiseplein tram station and then walk there. However, in my experience, it's better to get off at the 1e Con. Huygensstrast tram station, and then walk to the restaurant. Remember to take cash! This restaurant does not take credit card. The first night, we had Wienerschnitzel, Dutch steak, and pork chop. The second night, we had veal liver with baked onion and beef stew. This is most likely Dutch food at its best: unpretentious and flavorful. The Dutch steak was just right with the temperature, and was not overdone or undercooked for my taste. The Wienerschnitzel was pretty good, and the veal liver was not gamey. Gamey food is a big no-no for me. The assorted vegetable side dishes were also a surprise, especially the red cabbage with applesauce! Tastes like fall, which fit the occasion! I will definitely be back at the restaurant when I return to Amsterdam. This hidden gem must be explored.

Pleasantly surprised. My limited knowledge of European staples tend towards meat and potato type images. Of course, the best dish we had was meat and potatoes. The service was warm and hospitable. Lots of friendly local regulars. The hostess rescued as by giving the restless wailing one a box of toys and a fun looking high chair. The breakdown: - Fish of the day dish - uber fresh white fish - Weinerschnitzel - we ordered thinking it'd be a sausage. Turns out to be a breaded piece of flattened fried pork. - Beef stew - stick with boiled potatoes. Eat it like the locals. Mash your boiled tatoes up, pour the beef stew over them, mash somemore, stuff your face. Nom nom. All the main dishes came with a side. The server was kind enough to give us 3 different varieties of sides - Boiled potatoes - Cabbage stew type thing - uber yummy - Boiled green beans On hindsight, we should have opted for the other house special - meatballs.

And despite ALL of our meals in Amsterdam being excellent, this one may have been the best. We wanted to try Dutch food, not totally knowing what to expect and were blown away by the combination of flavors and textures we consumed. We started with the pickled herring which was served with onions and pickles- fresh yet bold! I'm still thinking about those little fishies weeks later. Then we each had the sampler-ish plates (I forget what it was called). Hers was the vegetarian version and mine was with sausage. There were 3 kinds of essentially mashed potatoes with veggies mixed in: 1 with spinach I think, 1 with carrots, and 1 with sauerkraut. Mine came with a delightfully rich gravy and my moms came with some kind of lighter yellow sauce (I think mustard based). We tried these same dishes at other Dutch restaurants during our stay, but nothing beat The Pantry. The service in this quaint and cozy spot was also excellent!

I found it browsing Yelp, and the name alone told me this was going to be a meat-forward kind of night. Fair warning if you're bringing anyone squeamish about restaurant names: The wife wasn't thrilled about it going in, though the food won her over fast. Getting there was its own small adventure. The place sits down a narrow alley, and our Uber couldn't get us all the way to it, which turned into a bit of a hike. That happened to us more than once in Amsterdam, using the exact address didn't always mean the driver could actually reach the door, so budget a few extra minutes if you're headed here. I normally default to steak, but the menu had a burger topped with pulled pork that promised more meat than a straight cut, and I couldn't pass it up. Delicious. Genuinely one of the best burgers I've had. But the wife's flat iron steak might have stolen the night. Flat iron is one of the most underrated cuts out there, and this kitchen proved it. She was still talking about that steak days after we got home, enough that I ended up buying flat irons from Costco just to chase it. The atmosphere is cool and a little edgy, dim lighting, a lot of character, and yes, some genuinely creepy decor scattered around, including an old doll that stares at you like it's judging your order. It ran loud, but not so loud we couldn't hold a conversation across the table. Service was good, just on European time rather than American time. Getting the check took a while, which threw us off at first, but that's the norm across the EU, not a knock on this place specifically. Pricey, but worth every bit of it. We'd go back without hesitation next time we're in Amsterdam.

Potatoes were thinly sliced, perfectly cooked with light and soft cream. - : Unfortunately for me I was in a foody mood and decided to try their "more elaborated dishes" a la carte. "Soupe de poisson a la Marseillaise" is a French cuisine classic. In their version of this dish, the fish and the shrimp did bring a nice note, but the quality was average. Way too liquid, no fine texture, the rouille sauce was like a basic mayonnaise... I am always a bit disappointed when those classics are not well executed :( Then I tried the "stuffed" coeur d'artichaud (artichoke). The artichoke was way too big and it felt like they tried to put as many things as possible in the filling (big pieces of mushrooms, other vegetables, cheese....). I was really expecting something lighter, fine and subtle. It's a great creative idea... too bad it did not deliver on my expectations. Luckily the sweet notes at the end were very nice. Try the meringue or the delicat au chocolate (cake). Though a bit filling the flavors are intense and I have had my great dose of chocolate for the week. In few words, a friendly table with a nice menu du jour. I would have given another star, if the service was a bit faster.
