It has a homey vibe inside and I enjoyed looking at the photos and other memorabilia on the walls. We got the stewed beef and Amsterdam chicken. It came with sides of boiled potatoes, cabbage and brussels sprouts. Portions were surprisingly large as they give you generous portions of sides. We had plenty of leftovers to take back. Would highly recommend this place. Space is small so make a reservation. The food feels like a home cooked meal, our schnitzel was tasty, and beef stew wasn't heavy and well flavored. The side of boiled cabbage and spinach felt pretty healthy too, consistency was on thicker side like a roux but not buttery. This was our first time in Amsterdam and we wanted to try some authentic Dutch food for our first dinner. We Yelped for the area and Hap Hmm came up as a place that locals frequent and has good reviews. On their business card, it says: "Specialist in Hollands eten!" which is just what we wanted. We are so happy we went here as the food was delicious and the place was pretty busy with lots of friends chatting with the staff as regulars do. The staff was super friendly and always checking up on us. I had the waitress-recommended Runderlap + gebakken aardappel. If you don't read Dutch (like me!) it was a Hap Hmm specialty family recipe from 1965 and was essentially stewed beef. I was super tender and served in a thick sauce that made me savor every bit. My daughter had the Vegetarian schnitzel and my wife had the prize winning Wienerschnitzel. I tasted each and they all were super tasty. The meals came with sides that included spinach, Fava beans (I think) and a ratatouille. Hap Humm really emphasizes quality home made foods with time tested family recipes and great service. We had two entrees, a beer, a wine, and water for 46€. The portion sizes were generous and came with plenty of hot veggies on the side to share. I ate at this restaurant with my family during our stay in Amsterdam in mid-October. While service left a bit to be desired the first time, it was good during our second visit, and I felt taken cared of in an intimate setting. The area is kinda off the beaten path in Amsterdam, which also gives it a bit of its charm. Apple Maps would direct you to get off at Leiseplein tram station and then walk there. However, in my experience, it's better to get off at the 1e Con. Huygensstrast tram station, and then walk to the restaurant. Remember to take cash! This restaurant does not take credit card. The first night, we had Wienerschnitzel, Dutch steak, and pork chop. The second night, we had veal liver with baked onion and beef stew. This is most likely Dutch food at its best: unpretentious and flavorful. The Dutch steak was just right with the temperature, and was not overdone or undercooked for my taste. The Wienerschnitzel was pretty good, and the veal liver was not gamey. Gamey food is a big no-no for me. The assorted vegetable side dishes were also a surprise, especially the red cabbage with applesauce! Tastes like fall, which fit the occasion! I will definitely be back at the restaurant when I return to Amsterdam. This hidden gem must be explored. read more

Weinerschnitzel with black pepper sauce (instead of mushroom because that ran out) was delicious though nothing special or mind-blowing. Our sides were boiled potatoes and vegetables. The gravy for the potatoes was amazing and, I believe, homemade. Certainly better than any gravy I had in the USA! Vegetables were pretty standard, but all the portions were generous. Amsterdam chicken (cooked in beer) was served in a similar style as the beef stew and was good but a bit too dry and salty. It is a higher class restaurant so be ready to pay a little more but it is most definitely worth it. I usually take my out of town guests to The Pantry near Leidseplein for typical Dutch food, but thought I would give this restaurant a try since I saw it on the I amsterdam website. I found the food to be overly salty and the service as well... Food: 2/5 We ordered the stewed beef and the chicken piri piri. They came with sides - vegetables (carrots, spinach and peas) and potatoes. I'm really not sure what other people were talking about when they said the portions were large. The portions were small, even by normal Dutch standards. The chicken was just a single thigh, and the stewed beef was served in a tiny creme brulee sized ramekin. Almost all of the food was too salty (stewed beef) or sour (spinach), with the exception of the carrots - those were tasty but seriously? Well-cooked carrots are not enough to redeem this meal. Service: 2/5 Weirdly enough on the English menu, there was a line that said "couvert - 5 euros" but it did not appear on the Dutch menu. The meaning of this revealed itself when we asked for an extra plate so that we could share some of the food, the waitress sharply replied that she could give us a plate but it would cost 5 euros. Why on earth would you charge extra for a plate? You already charge for water! Atmosphere: 3/5 It does feel like a Dutch grandma's house , all cosy and gezellig with long shared tables, but this grandma is losing her sense of taste and tends to put too much salt in everything. Found it on the "top 10 Dutch restaurants list" on a website for Amsterdam. I was sold when I read it was close to my hostel and offered great prices. Entire meal under 20 euro consisted of a beer, split appetizer, main dish, a desert, and a cappuccino. For that price the taste still tasted 5 star. Tender beef, fresh vegetables, great shrimp, and an awesome desert. The atmosphere was amazing, my friend and i were the only tourists in there and the place feels like your eating in someones dining room. Hap Hmm--where to begin?! You'll find some haters on here, but not this reviewer! We knew once we stepped inside that this was a good place. There was a line of locals and seasoned tourists returning--a good sign. We were seated promptly and enjoyed local beers (try the IJ Wit from Brouwerij 't IJ). The place is so popular that one should be prepared for a tight squeeze, or even sitting with another party. We started with the soup of the day, a deliciously comfortable tomato and vegetable soup. Then, we ordered Grandma's meatball and the vegetarian schnitzel with pepper sauce. Both were delicious and, contra to other reviewers, we thought the portions were amply sized. Our meal came with a big bowl of frites and two vegetable sides. The latter seem to vary from table to table, and we were given the lima beans and stewed spinach. To be honest, we don't think anyone could make stewed spinach well enough for us to enjoy it, but the lima beans were great! We ended our meal with homemade rice pudding (we were allowed to share without a fuss) and left full, happy, and singing the praises of Hap Hmm for the rest of our trip! Don't miss this place.
