I am an established patient with Dr. Johnson , and I have received excellent care over the last few years. But what I want to comment on is the way in which his office professionally dealt with a phone call I made complaining of tooth pain. I was promptly scheduled the next day as a "fit in. At the visit, I was immediately greeted by the dental assistant when I came in the door- no waiting involved at all. X-rays taken and saw Dr Johnson within minutes, who examined me, and came up with a treatment plan. He has a gentle demeanor about him. Reassuring, and professional. Amazing service. Nice to have a medical office where one can call and someone with a live voice answers the phone. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Johnson for about 20 years. I'm in my 70s and seen a lot of dentists but he is by far the best in so many ways. I kid him about my dental anxiety but the truth is he is so mellow and gentle, so fast, and as pain free as you can get. There's rarely a wait in his office and his staff are truly lovely and super nice, efficient, and skilled. I have all my teeth and they look better than a lot of 40 year olds. Dr. Johnson Is very skilled at cosmetic procedures and has fixed things like wear you get from aging. I used to worry if something happened to my teeth but now more at ease knowing he can fix whatever happens. He's given me Invisalign, tooth whitening, crowns, and fillings. His hygienists are the best. Shout out to Connie! She's so knowledgeable and has offered so many helpful tips and instructions. I love the underwater sea painting she has mounted on the ceiling it's truly funny and entertaining to look at while she's doing a THOROUGH cleaning job. My son was being upsold at another office, something that Dr. Johnson never does. I recommended he see Dr. Johnson and now both he and his wife see him. They both also rave about him now. My loathe for the dentist began as a small child. I was that trickster who would wet her toothbrush and say "I brushed my teeth!" As you can imagine this led to many traumatizing needle and drill filled visits. Needless to say, I never developed a love for going to the dentist until I went to Dr. Johnson & his great staff. They are friendly, efficient, helpful and about as painless as you can get with hands and metal instruments in your mouth. From teeth cleanings to crowns, they handle it as gently as possible. One con is the parking. The office is in Hillcrest, so parking on the street is tough or metered. They have a parking garage but you still have to pay for that parking. I think it's only like $3 so it's totally not a bad deal. read more

Dr. Johnson and his staff have been great since I moved to San Diego and started seeing them in fall 2015. As an example, today my cap, which is my front tooth, fell out and Dr. Johnson made time to come in and fix it as soon as possible. While I wasn't sure if he could see me today his staff scheduled me for tomorrow and suggested temporary fixes. As you can imagine the stress of having your front fake tooth fall out was high, and the whole team made it an easy and stressless process. Thank you! Best dentist ever, and best staff. I've been coming here since 2003. Trustworthy dentist and staff, friendly and personable. They are knowledgeable and do an amazing and thorough job. A few specific examples from over the years of why I'll never go anywhere else: - Once I was late and didn't have change on me for the parking meter. When I called their office - their receptionist met me downstairs with change for the meter. That is excellent and caring service! - My insurance at work changed briefly a few years ago and their office was no longer a provider. I went to another local dentist for my cleaning and was told I needed $3000 in dental "debridement and deep cleaning". Since I've always had great dental health, I called Dr. Johnson right away. His office saw me immediately at no charge, did a check up, and reassured me with their excellent care. I went to back to them as cash pay until I was able to change insurances again. - all their hygienists are great. Connie in particular has been cleaning my teeth for years. She's thorough, careful, and takes great care of me in addition to being pleasant and friendly! - Had a dental issue over the weekend once and received a call back from Dr. Johnson within minutes to guide me through the issue. - Dr. Johnson has a calm, trustworthy, and pleasant manner and is a great dentist. I wish all my other healthcare providers were half as great as their office! It's great having a group you can really trust. read more

You move to San Diego and need a dentist; where to turn. I asked my new co-workers after a team meeting if they could recommend anyone and my boss enthusiastically mentioned Dr. Johnson. I've probably been to about two dozens different dentists in my lifte between moving around and the army dental corps and I have never had as great as experience as at this practice. Dr. Johnson himself is great, but his staff and especially my hygienist Connie are fantastic. I've never been given such a thorough dental examination with explanations as with Connie. She even went through each tool on the x-rays with me and explained their dental lingo and what it meant. By understanding why flossing was important to my gums, it actually encouraged me to floss beyond just having a date. I can't ever remember getting an oral cancer screening, but yet it's part of their package. Unfortunately, I've also had some more extensive dental work completed by Dr. Johnson and vouch for his other staff as well. It is a shame he no longer validates parking, but it runs about $1/hr and that's a better bargain than meters downtown. read more

It seems strange to review your densist, but I figure it's always a crap shoot when you select a new dentist/doctor/etc., so I might as well give my feedback to help make people's decisions more informed. I've been coming here for a few years now and haven't had any problems. My teeth are very healthy, so I haven't had any major procedures done, just routine cleanings and xrays. The dental hygienists here are very nice and do their job very well. I say this based on how comfortable I feel when I'm in the chair and how much pain I feel in my mouth when I leave (ie. I don't have any pain). I've been to other dentists where this was not the case, so be aware that there are definitely varying skills levels of hygienists! Anyway, I feel like the hygienists here are very good and I'm happy to have them take care of my teeth. Note: try to arrive early so you can be mesmermized by Dr. Johnson's salt water fish tank. How does one find a new dentist? Well, I hadn't been to the dentist in two years (my previous dentist retired), and I was dreading the idea of finding a new dentist. I asked many people, "Do you like your dentist?" and their general reactions were, "(Pause) Uhh... Yeah., s/he's okay." That was not the reaction I was looking for! However, I finally found a friend who said, "Oh yes, I love my dentist! My coworker loves him too!" BINGO! Just what I'd been waiting to hear! I was able to make an appointment to see the dentist within the next week. I came in about 10 minutes early to fill out new patient paperwork. Everyone was very nice. The hygienist was so awesome! She's been a hygienist for 26 years. I mentioned my general dental anxiety and she took time to talk to me in such a great honest, loving way. I was set at ease quickly. I had a full set of x-rays, and they found 3 cavities (took care of those on another visit). I also mentioned my concern about my teeth crowding, etc., and Dr. Johnson explained that it was not due to my wisdom teeth. (I have 3 so, I am very wise) =D He offered to also make me retainers to prevent my pearly whites from sliding around anymore. Overall, I've been very impressed. He did not try to up-sell me on everything, but rather presented the options and facts. He was patient, honest and answered all of my questions. I was actually able to use my dental insurance, and it didn't hurt! So if you're looking for a new dentist in the Hillcrest area, give his office a try! read more

Mitch Hedberg put it best when he said that quitting smoking is as hard as it is to start flossing. Unless you're Bill Murray in Little Shop of Horrors, chances are, you probably don't like going to the dentist. Nobody likes being told what they've been doing wrong or reminded that they suck at taking care of their teeth. Nobody likes the feeling of someone digging around your gum line with a pointy pick, that sucker thing swallowing up the drool from your mouth just before it dribbles down your chin. It's just not fun. Dr. Johnson and his friendly staff get it. They understand you'd probably rather get your tongue pierced 6 times than visit the dentist once every 6 months, so they try to make the experience as comfortable as possible. In your exam room, you get cable TV and free reign of the remote. The cleanings are gentle yet efficient, and rather than berate you for not flossing, they usually suggest flossing methods to you that might be a little easier to deal with. Dr. Johnson is friendly and gentle, only does what he deems necessary, and works with what is feasible for his patients from what I've experienced. He's a great dentist. read more

I've been going to Dr. Johnson and my hygenist ,Connie, for a couple years now. I don't hate going to the dentist, at all. They have never made me wait more than a few minutes, they have a friendly staff and I swear Connie has the best memory of anyone I've ever met. She remembers everything and is also able to tell me why it's important to floss or where I need to focus my attention. I've even chipped a tooth and Dr. Johnson was able to accomodate me a couple days later and fixed it for free. I am no stranger to dentist office since I was a little kid but I should say that Dr. Johnson would be my favorite dentist. His calm, sort of quiet personality (which is totally opposite of my personality) sort of relaxes my nervousness every time I have to go to the dentist. My co-worker recommended Dr. Johnson and I never looked for a new dentist ever since. No gimmick, no extra charges and he did quality work. He referred me to an endodontist and even she was praising his work. I felt very comfortable with my every visit. They are also very accommodating. I parked on a meter and did not have enough coins to cover my appointment. They helped me added coins on my meter while I was getting my teeth done. SO NICE! Oh yea, sooo parking is not necessarily free. You can park on the street with the meter running or pay around $5 to park in their building. Looks like most of his patients are older so no need to fret for screaming children in his office. One other cool thing is: gotta check out his awesome aquarium in the waiting room. : ) read more

Myself & my wife have both been seeing Dr. Johnson for regular check-ups for 2 years now. Today, I was completely shocked by the lack of utter compassion and greed with Dr. Johnson. After being told I needed a filling and a crown, which are both next to each other, that I could not get one done at a time, as I cannot afford the $500 for a crown. I was told by Jennifer, that I had to have both done at the same time, and they expected half down RIGHT THEN & THERE. I explained my financial difficulty, and asked if I could have just the filling done for now until I could see my way to pay for the crown: No, no way. All or nothing it seems. I have been visiting Dr. Johnson's office since 2011. The experience is usually nothing but pleasant and probably because I always made my appointment for 7:30am, the first appointment for the day. Unfortunately, I had to reschedule my appointment for 12pm (my lunch break). I arrived at 11:55am, hoping to be seen a few minutes early. The dental assistant was on the phone and didn't acknowledge me until 12:05pm. I understand being busy and not being able to help someone right away, but don't ignore the client. A wave or head nod will suffice until you are done with the call. She proceeds to tell me the hygenist would be with me shortly. However, 1 hygenist was with a patient and the other had left minutes before for her lunch break (or so I assume). Finally, around 12:15pm I informed the assistant I would like to reschedule my appointment for another day since I was still waiting to be put in a room for the cleaning. Dr. Johnson decided to join the conversation and had the audacity to ask me, "You can't wait?". I found his comment to be very rude and inappropriate. If your office schedules a cleaning appointment for 12pm, then your staff should be ready to see the client at 12pm and not a minute later. Also, if your staff is aware your appointments are running behind, please have the respect to call the client and let them know they should arrive 15 minutes later than the scheduled appointment. Overall, I wasted my lunch break and I would not suggest anyone make an appointment with his office UNLESS you can be seen at 7:30am. read more

I have been going to Dr. Johnson since 2006. Today I was reminded again of why it is that I have been going to this office for 10 years. Connie is the absolute best dental hygienist. She is patient, gentle, kind and very thorough with her cleanings. I have had other hygienists here from time to time but Connie is by far my favorite. I don't even mind going to the dentist since I started coming here! I asked him not too long ago about veneers and he very honestly steered me away from getting them because in my case, they wouldn't give the look I wanted. So he's quite ethical and not just in it for the money. I wholeheartedly recommend him. Oh, and as far as timeliness, I have made appointments for all sorts of times of day and they've never ran late and have always acknowledged me when I come in. Went to see this Dentist once in an Emergency, didn't do much other then to charge me a few hundred dollars for X-rays and refer me to a Endodontist. On that visit he would have got a 3 star review as his Receptionist was not the most pleasant person, the office smelled, his hygienist was rough and bordering on rude, not to mention the bill was rather steep for a few X-rays and a thirty second conversation. Dr Johnson and his staff are always very nice. I have never had to wait longer than 5 mins, they work with my insurance and always give me an estimate and there are never any suprises. The Dr. only does what is necessary and he always explains what he is doing and never seems like he is in a hurry. They also always check before you leave if you need your parking validated. This is a wonderful place. They take most insurance and are in most networks. Dr.Johnson has great doctor bedside manner which means he's very considerate to concerns, takes extra time to make you feel better when in the chair and really has a very calming disposition. Going to the dentist is normally stressful in itself but his entire practice makes the extra effort to help you relax and do the work as expediently as possible. All the dental higenist are top notch and very professional. They do a really good job and it's evident that they really care. I would definitely recommend this practice. When trying to use up my flexible spending account within a certain deadline because I was switching jobs, even though they knew I had an extra $500 to spend on dental servcies, they didn't try to have me get extra work or any work done that I didn't need. This really speaks to the ethics of this practice which is really commendable. read more

I would not go to this Dentist ever again. Rude receptionist, poor follow up, and overcharging on the visits. Dr Johnson is the KING of the upsell. He is always trying to sell you something else, make an appointment for another day, or add a service. To add insult to injury you have to pay for the parking $2.00 an hr because he is the only dentist in the building who doesnt validate. The office is small, he is unable to do anything in house so you MUST come back for any treatments. If you want to spend a long wait, waste a lot of time, receive poor care and poorly fitted crowns/fillings this is the guy for you. read more

I read reviews of dozens of dentists to try to find the best (gentlest and deals with adult sized babies well were my criteria for this). I'm SO glad I selected Dr. Johnson! First, his hygenist is the sweetest young lady. She was gentle, but very effective. Dr. Johnson took his time, was mellow and reassuring. As a teenager I'd had some really bad, painful dental experiences so I did a ton a research when choosing Dr Johnson to find a super gentle, caring dentist and I couldn't have found a better one.
