I have lived a life of severe dental anxiety causing me to not see a dentist for decades. I thought this was "fine" until i started experiencing serious pain in a molar that had broken, along with some new sensitivity in some very old fillings. The reality set in that I couldn't hide behind my dental anxiety any longer. I reached out to Dr. McClanahan and set up an appointment. Even setting foot in the office was causing heart palpitations. I had no idea what to expect! I have read online that some dentists shame patients for neglecting care, or how some just don't care if you're anxious. My mind was full of all kinds of interesting thoughts and fears. I told him and his staff that I am anxious, and they treated me with extra care and explained everything along the way. After some x-rays and a consultation, I needed an extraction and some fillings! Yikes. It was kind of a shock, although I knew I'd need some extensive work. I also knew that my years of dental fear had finally caught up to me. Fast forward to today, and I have had my extraction and I just completed my fillings. Thanks to Dr. McClanahan and his team, their calming and reassuring attitudes, and the power of oral conscious sedation, I've had my dental issues resolved and I have made serious progress toward my life-long dental anxiety. I went in today to have my bite adjusted after the fillings, and I have to say I was not even anxious stepping into the office and hearing and feeling the adjustment of my fillings taking place. There's no way to rate for Zero Stars. Zero Stars for Zero rude ignorant non-service. Went to great lengths to see this Dentist. After what I thought was a nice consultation, with zero issues; both his staff and McClanahan refused to set a follow-up appointment and return any of my calls. What gives? Reading other reviews they have somehow forced to the bottom, which I'm sure they'll do with this....I see others have the same complaint. I'm not young, was polite, not demanding and don't think I'm a problem patient, so no clue why he won't treat me. My Insurance company was billed tho for his non-treatment. I haven't been to the dentist in years. Going to the dentist always made me anxious. I didn't have insurance since I was 18 years old. So I would have to pay out of pocket. It resulted me to dread going to the dentist. My coworker told me that some dentist offer sedation for those who suffer from anxiety. Once I got dental insurance, I did some research. I found this place. I saw an overwhelming good amount of reviews. I booked an appointment for me and my husband. They were so nice to let us schedule an appointment together. It was honestly the best dentist experience I ever had. You won't regret coming here! My husband received 6-7 fillings. I got 5 fillings and 2 wisdom tooth removals all in one day. The experience went so well that I didn't even remember what happened during my procedure. If you want to go see a dentist and have some fear or anxiety this place is for you. All the staff and I mean all the staff are the friendliest people. They are really good at explaining things and being compassionate about your situation. I recently saw a dentist in my neighborhood and was left feeling skeptical. The fee schedule seemed extremely high and work he said was needed for my Husband and I just didn't sit well with me. A co-worker referred me to Dr. McClanahan. She said he is the absolute best and she would never go anywhere else. I now see why she is so loyal. Dr. McClanahan and all the staff I met were great. I arrived not knowing what work I needed. (I had a feeling what the previous dentist said I needed wasn't actually the case) He looked at each tooth and came up with a treatment plan that fit my budget and worked within the scope of my dental insurance. I chose laughing gas instead of complete sedation. It helped me feel calm and relaxed and I was able to put complete trust in Dr. McClanahan and his assistant. I had 5 amalgam fillings removed and replaced with composite. It was less painful (and scary) than I thought it would be. The following week I was still having some pain and they fit me on their schedule right away to take care of the problem. (my 'bite' was off - no big deal and it was corrected within a half hour) If you are looking for a gentle Dentist with a caring nature, friendly staff and reasonable prices - look no further than Dr. McClanahan. I went to this office for YEARS and always had great service. Dr McClanahan was my 1st dentist and I had no idea how great he was until I switched insurance and had to try other practices. I've been through 5 other practices and not one has come close to the quality, service, compassion, or communication I received from this office. I had several fillings, cleanings, and even an emergency broken took tended to by Dr McClanahan and his staff and everyone was amazing. I was impressed by the friendliness of the staffs in this facility. It might be small but the most important to me is the Customer Service. Dr. Decker was very thorough, professional and most of all he shows sympathy to my dental issue. He has a good heart. He listens and cares about his patients. I had an emergency situation at that time when I decided to give the office a call, I thought they only take by appointment only but Christie showed concerns and a great listener after explaining her my incident. They took care of my needs promptly and explained me everything from procedures and suggestions. Sure enough, I found myself going back in their facility at least 6x in a month. lol. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Decker and his staff. I recently went in for a set of X-rays, overdue exam, wisdom tooth removal and some ( very skilled, thank you, Dr. Decker)additional work. I can't believe I'm saying this but... I actually enjoyed getting dental work done, it's true. I had avoided going back to the dentist for a long time because of some terrible experiences that I had had. Exceptional is the first word I would like to use for this review. After finding Dr. Decker on Yelp and seeing the reviews, I called for a first-time appointment. Not only was I seen the same day, but the service was beyond anything I could have expected. First, my appointment was for 2:30 and they were on time. That was much appreciated. All of the staff I encountered were professional but very friendly as well. Dr. Decker and I had a short talk before being I was taken into the exam room. He asked about what fears I had, what I was concerned about with my visit and was very careful to explain everything that was going to happen. After the X-rays, he showed me what he saw, explained the issues on the X-rays and then had a miniature camera that he put into my mouth so he could show me everything he was looking at and explained what he thought the best course of action would be and why. Also, no financial surprises. After the exam room, we sat in an office and he explained every cost, every discount he gave and we came up with a plan for treatment, TOGETHER. He did not tell me what needed to be done, we talked about it together and decided together. This was extremely comforting to me... to know he wasn't here just to make a money but really did care about my thoughts and what I wanted to be treated first. We made a two-year plan that I am comfortable with. Highly recommended. read more

It's been along time since I've been to the dentist. I made an appointment and for once I didn't cancel. The front desk receptionist was very sweet & welcoming. The reception area was very clean and neat. My wait wasn't long. The dental assistant was polite and warm. I waited a little bit for Dr. McClanahan. He was VERY sweet, warm and informing. My exam was very thorough and the doctor had a lot of advise options and information. I have a lot of dental work to do and I was worried about the quote. This group is easily the best dental shop in town! Like most guys I put off health issues until I'm about to die, then seek medical help. I had lost a crown a while ago and didn't have it replaced, so I lived with it for a while (1.5 years..yeah I know) so in that time the remaining tooth abscessed to a point of no return. Told the dentist pull this bad som-a-biach PRONTO! Went in with horror stories playing through my head of advanced pain and suffering, real horror story stuff I tell ya! I was presented with multiple offers for knock-out drugs and laughing gas, but being a hard man I simply said "Novocain only please". I was fully numb when Dr.Mc Clanahan came in the room and gave me some tunes to listen too, gave me some dark glasses to wear, then proceeded to yank that baby out! He took his time and less than an hour I was back on my feet minus one molar...pain free! Great front staff and excellent dental technicians. Added bonus? These Doctors love San Diego Craft beers...now that's class! read more

Dr. decker and his staff has done it again. Dr. Decker has worked with me for over 10 years to give me a great smile. And it shows by my profile picture. Anyway, last week I had an accident, Someone backed out of their driveway, and hit me as I was passing by on my scooter. A lot of damage to my bike and to me, but the most severe was to my smile. I lost 3 of my upper front teeth. I contacted Dr. Decker's office and Kristie hold me to come in immediately. Dr. decker adjusted his schedule and saw me right away. He told me not to worry and that I would be smiling again real soon. I have a lot on my plate right now dealing with the insurance company. It is great not have to do the same with the dentist. Two visits in two days, and I am on my way to being able to smile again. I left my second visit with a breakdown of the cost for my insurance company and a schedule for my surgeries. Can you imagine? I actually dozed in and out of sleep while they were extracting one of my back teeth. That's due to the great job Mr. McClanahan and his staff did with sedation. They gave me sedation to take the night before, the morning of and while at the office. When it was time for the operation, I was too busy trying to figure out what this strange blue triangle on my nose was that I didn't care what the doctors were doing. Now, I'm not afraid of going to the dentist but every dentist I've been to has underestimated my concerns that I don't react very well to their standard numbing injection. They (well, actually, I) but they learn the hard way when they start working and I jump up. See, I told you I needed more. You didn't believe me. Well, Dr. McClanahan preempted that with three levels of sedation. He also set up a financial arrangement with me so I could pay the remaining balance my insurance wouldn't cover over five weeks. I've never been able to do that before. Oh, by the way: that blue triangle turned out to be the space between the tinted plastic they put over my eyes and my nose. It only appeared blue because that was the natural lighting as opposed to the dimmer lighting I saw through the plastic! read more

The team at Decker and McClanahan were just fantastic in ever way. I chose the sedation option and I'm very glad I did because I was out for the whole thing. The day after having a wisdom tooth removed & multiple old fillings on the right (top & bottom) refilled: I was dreading yesterday ever since I set it up weeks ago. I am soooo glad I found Dr. McClanahan's office!!! Everyone there is a class act, genuine, straight forward, professional and talented! I am the biggest wuss when it comes to teeth and my mouth showed it. My mouth looked and performed like an 40 year old Chevy truck, worked hard and never fixed after multiple dents and broken parts. Well after this second visit (first visit took care of the left side of my mouth) he has taken my teeth back at least 20 years. All my old silver fillings have been replaced by shining porcelain looking material and a wisdom tooth with a cavity is out of my head. This office does what you need or want. Ever since I was a kid, held down in a dentist chair, lied to, harmed and finally ripped off by various dentists, I developed a serious anxiety about even walking into a dentist office. I had numerous negative experiences with dentistry when I was growing up, and developed quite a phobia against it. I didn't go to the dentist for about 10 years in my 20's, but as I neared 30 I realized that I needed to get back on track. I found Dr. Decker in the yellow pages - a full page ad claiming that his practice was THE ONE for anyone who was afraid of the dentist. He was right. From the moment I walked in, I was treated with nothing but respect and gentleness. He got my mouth updated and back on track. We are a military family, and were stationed several times in san diego over a 15 year period. He remembered me and was always happy to see me - treating me like an old friend.
