This is getting a good solid 3. It is a down home Italian family kind of place. Still has the old school feel, but as an Italian myself, I will say "in a good way." If this is not what you go for, you may not be happy. The portions are big, the prices are nice, I have a feeling the waitstaff knows you after one visit and would welcome you back with a " HI HONEY" from across the place. I had a chicken parm sandwich, and it was huge. The bread was fresh. It was so sauucy! The Cheesburger and Turkey Club sandwiches are an enormous portion. The fries are the big fat kind that you drown in ketchup like you're a kid again (again, in a good way). We did not get dessert, but the menu is extensive. Here's the thing about Greg's -- you either love it as it is or you take it off your list after one visit. I have been going to this place since 1999 and can say with confidence that little has changed except the smoking policy and the removal of the little stand near the door that used to sell lottery tickets. That's pretty much a good thing because Greg's has a lot to offer. First of all, Greg's has good, uncomplicated, inexpensive Italian and American dishes. They make some great veal dishes as well as prime rib and fish dishes your grandma probably likes -- lots of break crumps on top of various haddock-like varieties of fish. Entrees come with either a small salad or soup of of the day, which is usually minestrone. You also get a choice of side starches or veggies. I am a huge fan of the butternut squash personally. Remember how I mentioned your grandmother? Well, Greg's usual clientele consists mostly of Watertown natives able to be members of the AARP at least earlier in the evening. The real upside of this is that Greg's has a super selection of early bird specials. When I recently brought a friend there for an early dinner he looked a bit wary of the crowd in the small lounge sipping Manhattans and eating the free spreadable cheese and ritz crackers. All the animated Christmas dolls seemed to alarm him. His doubt turned to admiration after he waddled out the door completely full and with his wallet barely lightened. One other thing worth noting, Greg's really feels like a neighborhood place. Even if the same hostess has seated you a hundred times you don't seem to earn a place in her memory unless you attend Watertown High reunions. During this terrible period we are always looking for local restaurants that we can support by ordering takeout if offered. While visiting my daughter recently we were happy to find that Greg's was open and ordered our dinner there. Great decision. Everything was fresh, hot, delicious and beautifully packaged. Prepared and presented exactly like if you were "eating in". The staff went out of their way to thank us for supporting them which was a real feel good moment. We had never eaten there before but when this is all behind us Greg's will be a regular destination. Greg's is the spot to go for an early bird special before 5:30PM. Not much of a singles scene during the early bird special unless you are over 60, Greg's is a family affair. It was amusing looking around and seeing tables of generations of families getting together for a good meal at 5:15 in the evening. The place was packed, so just understand that it is a little bit on the loud side. I recently had a chance to check out Greg's with my grandparents and cousin. My grandparents had been raving about Greg's so I figured it was worth a try. At $10-$11 for the earlier bird specials, the price can't be beat for the full meal. You can start off with a soup or salad, then enjoy one of the many main courses with potatoes or pasta, and finish off with a nice dessert. I ordered a soup, chicken parmesan, pasta, and sundae all for that $10 price. Greg's is a good local place for a good local meal with family. It was definitely an older crowd but part of that could have been the time we went to Greg's. If you are looking for an amazing culinary experience, you might be slightly disappointed with the food, but if you are looking for a place with character and a great early bird special, this is a place worth checking out. read more

We went here on a recent Saturday night and enjoyed it. We had a group of 6 so they were able to take a reservation. It was very crowded the whole time and the food was really good. Prices were very reasonable and the portions were pretty large. One of our guests order Lasagna, about 10 minutes later the waitress came out and told her it was sold out... As everyone has noted, this is definitely a LOCALS spot. However, after being prompted by many longtime Belmont, West Cambridge, Watertown locals to try it, we did. We loved it. It's just cheesy enough with the free cheese spread and crackers while you wait to be seated, to be endearing. The EARLY BIRD SPECIALS are amazing. Where else can you get a tasty steak, salad, and baked potato for $9.99??? The food is actually good! Mind you, there are mostly senior citizens in for the Early Bird Specials, but does it really matter? Oh Greg's. It's so delightfully suburban. It's so hoppin' in that Early Bird Dinner Special, Senior Citizen's Discount kind of way. Even on a weeknight! There was even a wait for a table! You get to wait in the 'lounge' area. Fancy! The food here is so what I grew up with in suburban Massachusetts...it brings me back to going out for dinner with my parents as a kid in the Kingston/Plymouth area, from the Italian scala bread with sesame to the free iceberg lettuce salad that comes with your meal. The portions are huge and yummy-- after the chicken parm with a side of linguini I am deep, deep within a food coma. Greg's is not gourmet by any stretch, but the food is really really good, especially the traditional Italian offerings. It is total comfort food. The service is friendly yet no nonsense and very efficient. I wish I had gone here more when I lived in the neighborhood! read more

Ordered takeout for someones birthday from here, even though placing the order and picking it up was a bit of a hassle the food was excellent, all very flavorful and well cooked. We ordered the Veal Cordon Bleu ( i had to resrtain myself from eating my bf's meal it was very yummy); Fried Shrimp Scampi ( Jumbo well coooked shrimp more than filling) and the Shrimp Cachatori (said it was yum) . I really enjoy this restaurant, I've been twice. The waitstaff is very engaging and pleasant, the service couldn't be speedier. The portions are humongous. I ordered eggplant parmesan once and the other visit had a baked salmon. Both super tasty and the creamy peppercorn dressing is delish on the salad. The restaurant is sort of tucked off of Mt. My boyfriend's family sweats this place. They go there, they drive all the way there from Wakefield to pick up take-out. They love it. I like it, too. The eggplant parm side dish is literally the BEST eggplant I have ever had in my life. My boyfriend, who HATES eggplant, eats it. It's that good! I've tried their BBQ chicken and I wasn't too thrilled. But they sure do know how to make some great Italian dishes. It's an elderly spot, though. But that makes it quiet. :) read more

If you're looking for over-priced and fancy, go into Cambridge or downtown Boston. If you are looking for good food for a good price, go to Greg's. The service is okay, but the food is better. The menu hasn't changed much since the late 30's when it was opened by Greg's mother. There was a time when you would hear "Sorry, the wait is about an hour," which was told to you by Greg's daughter and your meal cooked by his sons. Today it's a little different, the rush is "early bird" time of day, the cook will probably be one of Greg's grandsons and if you're lucky, your waitress just might be a grand-daughter. So ya, it's still a family business that serves good down-home Italian food. The boys may not be Mario Batali but they're doing their heritage justice. The atmosphere is not what it was in the 30s, they have expanded, torn down a building to put in some off-street parking but the red checkered table clothes can still be found. If you're going to complain there is no delivery, call Dominos and get some crappy "italian" food. The menu consists of pasta, chicken, veal, calamari, salads, etc. It may not be Bertucci's but it's not a chain, it's a honest to God family owned and operated establishment. read more

We used to come to Greg's and then it slipped off our radar - until last weekend when my wife and I paid it another visit. It hasn't changed - except maybe everyone has gotten a little older - and they were not so young to begin with. As we entered we had to step around a walker that had been parked just inside the door - an indication of the dominant clientele there on a Friday night. I had the veal cacciatore and my wife had the pasta with clams (white sauce version). Both were as we remembered them - which is to say tasty and really home-made. There's nothing about this restaurant that is in the least pretentious, but the food is really good - if you like the New England italian basics. Which we do. read more

We've gone here whenever we're in the mood for a hearty Italian meal at a great price. Even though we're still in our early thirties, we go for the early bird special, because, my friend, it is indeed special. You get so much food for $12 - 14 bucks, such as an appetizer, salad, lasagna or chicken parmigiana, and dessert! You can't beat that deal, and the lasagna and any of their food is pretty right on as far as doing Italian right. They also serve crackers and scary cheese (weird neon cheese spread) that I do not touch, by my husband digs right in with that. Decor and ambience is like your neighborhood bar, they could update the decor a bit more and make it a bit more fancy, but if you end up going for the early bird, don't except to see many youngun's hanging out with you. If you are reallllly hungry, Greg's is your spot. The amount of food you get is obscene. You get a huge chunk of tasty Italian bread to start. This bread is so good. When we brought my little old Italian grandma (God rest her soul) she actually took the bread, wrapped it in her napkin, and tucked it in her "pocket book" so that we could get more. I digress. I have had quite a few meals here. I like coming at lunch or during the earlier bird because I think that's when you get the best value, and also because I really can't eat even close to the portion they give at dinner. At lunch I really like the pepper and egg sandwich. Random, but good. The sauce is really good, although sometimes there is a little too much garlic in it. My favorite meal is the veal marsala. The sauce is a very buttery marsala, which is different than what I'm used to but still good. Overall it's a solid place to come. The restaurant is old with the red-checkered tablecloths and is nothing fancy, but I guarantee you won't leave hungry! read more

The food is good but the place is a dump. You are in a room with a bathroom at the end. You have to smell everyone's poops and farts. The waitresses shakes the table cloth on the rug and everyone bumps into everyone all the time. Be prepared, they want a big tip. I got a $7 lunch and they want a $5 tip. Quit hating on Gregs! FOR REAL! This place is exactly what you need when your really hungry, for something really good, and you just don't have the time to cook it yourself, or get dressed to go eat. My bf and I get take out from here a few times a month. Its solid. Its A LOT of food, and not in the Vinny T's, we just load you up with pasta to make it look like a lot of food way. Its actually a lot of good food, you want to eat. Our staples are the chicken Parm, which you can't beat, its delish, and the Veal Cordon Blue.. also pretty amaze balls. Everything comes with Pasta, and a little secret, for an extra buck you can get the clam sauce, which is awesome. Take out or eat in, it doesnt matter... its good. I prefer romaine; however, iceberg is preferred by most (older) people. Simple garden salad. Oven-roasted potatoes. Excellent. Portions are large. You will not leave hungry. Many people, like us, walked out with brown paper bags. Restaurant was busy, but the atmosphere was not rushed. Service was friendly and fast. Seating was spacious; noise level low. After driving by for years I finally made it a point to check out Greg's, and boy am I glad. This place has it all, a bar, a lounge (what is that mysterious section with the round tables?), a cozy restaurant, half carafes of white zin, baskets of scali bread, iceburg salad! Has the decor been updated since the 70's, no way! Are the portions gigantic, uh huh! Are all of the patrons seniors, you bet! It reminded me so much of the restaurants I went to as a kid I couldn't help but imagine what my nana would have ordered... Eggplant Parm with manacoti. Atmosphere aside, the waitresses were super nice and the food was great (The linguini was a little over cooked, the pene was perfect). We all left feeling the gut bomb that comes from fried food smothered in red sauce, cheese and pasta. If you are looking for a salad with micro-greens and handmade ravioli con fungi, this isn't the place... I have been eating at Gregs since about 1982 and I have NEVER, yes NEVER had a bad meal. The food is great and the wait staff very friendly. A perfect meal: start with the cheesy garlic bread, salad with creamy peppercorn dressing, eggplant & chicken parm combo (extra sauce) side of ziti...you will be stuffed!
