Went to have dinner today . Have to agree the place looks outdated and dumpy . The Bar is noisy and packed with an older crowd but the food is always divine . The waitresses remember you after you go once and if you walk in with a smile they acknowledge you immediately. Had the London Broil special with a baked potato and steamed broccoli . My friends Chicken parmiggiani and veal marsalla !!! Delish. Eggplant fried to perfection with or without cheese!!! Is a place with comfort food . Greg's is the best. I started going here last year and am amazed. You get a huge serving of food for a tiny price. Every week my friend and I go in for the early bird dinner...best deal anywhere. The basically positive reviews are correct. The food is good and the atmosphere is great ... if you're looking for a very local Watertown feel. It reminds me of the places my grandparents used to take me to eat (working class steel-town in Pennsylvania) when I was a little kid. And as many of the other reviews point out, most of the diners here are older. But my wife and I took our two children (5 and 3), and we were seated a table near the bar. It turned out to be a great thing -- the kids were a hit with everyone who saw them. We felt welcomed into the "local" crowd. One caution: We went on a Saturday evening. We arrived at 6PM, which for us is VERY early. The place was already packed! No doubt everyone was there for the early-bird specials. Red sauce, red & white checkered tablecloth place. At our table of three we had chicken parm, eggplant parm and ravioli. Everyone liked their meal, portions plentiful, prices reasonable. Service was friendly and prompt. If you like local places, you should try this one. read more

Great mixed drinks. Strong and not super expensive - around $6 or so. Food is pretty good too and portions are generous. Waitstaff is friendly and quick. Parking is tough because the lot is small and tight but you can usually find a spot on a neighboring street if that is the case. read more

Greg's is no fancy schmancy restaurant, but my tummy always leaves happy when I eat here. I've only had lunch here - but the three times I have been here have been great. The lunch specials are extremely reasonable and the portions are generous. I think I paid less than $10 for eggplant parm (SO GOOD!!!!), pasta, and soup (you can also choose salad). I've had the chicken parm too which was also good - but the eggplant was cooked perfectly! I always take home leftovers b/c the portions are so generous. Went a few Saturday nights ago for dinner, was only about 5:30 and it was busy, must be because of the early bird specials. We sat at the bar with what seemed to be an interesting mix of regulars, young and old. We had a few drinks and ordered dinner, he had a 12oz steak, salad and baked. I had the stuffed chicken with supreme sauce (it was the sauce that drew me in and it was old school supreme, YUM) clam chowder and a baked, Everything was great, his steak was tender, chowder was creamy and the stuffing in the chicken was very good, again old school. You can't beat the prices, staff was friendly as were the patrons; I think we are going back for his Bday dinner this weekend. read more

We ate here last week during the holiday season. It was a friendly place with a very simple menu. The soups were warm but the restaurant was not. The place had a draft yet the staff were quick to make a change for us. The fish were incredibly fried and there was some "unknown" sauce. There were some very nice aesthetics inside too. read more

I went on a Wednesday night around 5:30-ish and was surprised at how busy it was. I ordered the 'early bird' ($10.50) baked pork chop with a salad and roasted potatoes. For my salad dressing I ordered parmesan peppercorn and it was the best dressing I have ever had (I guess they make it themselves, from what I was told). The roasted potatoes were good, but I was disappointed with the pork chop ... I could BARELY cut it ! The pieces I could cut off tasted good, but I had to leave about 80% of it on the plate. The special included dessert, which was a choice of vanilla or chocolate ice cream or rainbow sherbet ... I chose the sherbet. I was surprised at how expensive the wine was for such a dive-like place ... the cheapest glass was $5.75. I ordered a glass of Chianti for $6.25. I think the best part of the meal (besides the salad dressing) was the service. We had a blonde girl (probably in her mid-late 20's) and she was very efficient and super-nice. Gregs is well known for their italian food, the dinner menu isn't huge but it's still really good, i love their chicken parm, but the raviolis are good along with the manicotti, the pasta that comes with the dishes is always gone at the end of the meal, and I get a meatball on the side sometimes and it is very good and very big. read more

It was my first time eating at Gregs. I loved the lasagna. I don't usually get Italian food at restaurants, just because it's never cooked to my liking. Gregs did it right. Just like my mom used to make. The meat sauce was so good. It was a large piece, to much for me to finish, even walking in on a empty stomach after not eating all day. The meatball was also great. I ended my meal with sharing a bowl of Ice Cream with my boyfriend. The lighting was lacking. The decor could use updating, but I didn't go there for the decor. Went for lunch on Monday and even the restaurant was noisy because of the LOUD music! I was so disappointed and asked our waitress if they could turn it down a bit as my father had a stroke and it was bothering him. We couldn't talk as he speaks softly and we couldn't hear him over the noise. Waitress was rude when I asked for cheese for our pasta. Told me it was on the table it was not and since she was the "ONLY" waitress on I thought it bizarre that she claimed someone "stole" it. Also left empty plates on the table and she was not busy so there was no need as I waited tables for years - clear the empty/plates that are done. Your tables are not big enough to keep all that on them. Food was great as always and finished the last of it today for lunch. If you can bear the noise and don't get the rude waitress the food is excellent. read more

Third time I've been. After work, our patient/friend recommended Greg's. He had a longtime familiarity and we never heard of it. All thought it was fabulous and cleaned our plates. Saturday we decided to go out. Tossed about some potions...quiet...same time all said "Greg's." Here's what makes it great to me, food is terrific, portions beyond generous, the bread is delicious, the patrons are super welcoming(clearly regulars). Makes me think of "Cheers" if it were a restaurant. And top it off, the staff is not only great but personable, always! Great family all-American, Italian, etc. we always eat at the bar. When I bring my Mom and the Family I'll give a table a try. It's always busy so please don't ruin it for me by telling everybody. read more

I should have known what to expect from a place that advertises an early bird dinner special. I was staying across the street from Greg's when I first came to Boston and figured I'd take a break from having dinner at Soffra. I came for an early dinner right after work, lured by the low prices and promise of dessert. I got the scallops, fried/lightly breaded, with pasta, soup, and lots and lots of free bread. Sat at the bar and ordered a Manhattan. All the other patrons were clearly regulars, and I'm not exaggerating when I say there was more than one oxygen tank in the room. The food was mediocre, glad I paid under $20 for my whole meal plus the drink and tip. Service was friendly, but I don't like feeling gross when I finish a meal. The dessert I was so excited about ended up being a choice between chocolate pudding and ice cream... If you're someone who has a hard time with solid foods, Greg's is the place for you. read more

Was here a couple of weeks ago with a coworker from work. The place was not busy, yet the waitresses were congregating near the kitchen. We were there about 10 minutes. No waitress yet. I decide to go to the restroom, so I go to where they are hanging out and ask where's the restroom the waitress looks at me like I interrupted something important and in a loud voice says IN THE Back! So I keep my Kool and walk toward the back when another waitress that just walked past me is at our table and stops me in my tracks while I am still standing to ask me what I want to drink, I look at her then my friend and just said, I am going to the restroom, she gives me a look and says OK, but not in a nice way. I came back to the table and they are still just hanging out over there. It may not make a difference if I spend my money there or not, but it is my money and I get to make that decision. They are not doing me a favor I go to spend money, but I decided to just get up and leave. I won't be going back and I will let everyone I know not to go there as well. Poor customer service I rate this place with a big fat Zero. Oh and why are all the waitresses old? This place SUCKS!! read more

Unchanged ...still 5 stars. Been coming for a few years..mostly at lunch. Large lunch portions reasonable pricing. Seasoned waitress's. The wait staff does not turn over. we stupidly tried this place again, same waitress was there, same dirty looks from her, asked to speak to the manager AGAIN and AGAIN were brushed off. this is really painful because i had good memories of going here tons of times with my grandparents and family....and now i cant stay further AWAY from this place. its absolutely terrible. portions are lacking, service is detestable, prices give a false sense of security...this economy doesnt warrant or allow people to waste money on such a crappy establishment. never again, mark my words, never again! read more

Greg's is a neighborhood Restaurant that has not changed in years. The food selection is basic American/Italian. The portions are large and the prices are reasonable. The food and drinks are delicious, however the service was poor. We had called in a reservation for 7:30pm and it took them almost an hour to seat us. While I give them benefit of the doubt because they were super busy, after sitting for a half an hour we inquired about our reservation. We had to ask twice before a waitress rudely told us that reservations are not guaranteed and they did not know how much longer, like it was a bother we were even there. Why even take reservations if you don't know if you can keep them? And why be so rude to customers who have been waiting patiently almost an hour after their reservation time? read more

I'm surprised that I haven't written a review about Greg's before .I have been eating here for over 25 years and am a satisfied customer ,and can honestly say I have never had a bad meal here .The food is consistently good the prices are very reasonable .Most of the time I order the veal masala with roast potatoes.Always the veal is tender and there is lots of it .With the meal comes soup or salad ,I usually get the clam chowder .I have had their early bird special a few times usually prime ribs of beef , always good .But I have one problem I can never finish all the veal so wind up taking home a doggy bag.If there is one complaint, parking is it ,it can be challenging ,although they have a small parking lot ,it fills up fast ,you can park on the street but that can be challenging too.The other problem is Gregs is so popular that most of the time there is a wait.I have gone there 4.30pm and had to wait ,but the service is quite good so the wait is never too long.The décor is quite old and so doesn't compete with the more fancy Italian restaurants ,but when it comes to the food Gregs does not take second place to any fancy Italian restaurant .I should say some people would not equate Greg's to an Italian restaurant because Greg's serves steak,chicken fish and veal etc and it's all good ,however I mainly come here for the veal which is as good as it gets.I also know that former Governor Weld used to eat here . read more

Although a good amount, the Fried Clams were, greasy, and had an oily taste, I could only eat one.

Solid, well established neighborhood eatery. Not gourmet but you get a decent plate of food for the money.
