I'll start with the good, the food was amazing, everything was fresh and clearly made to order. The real concern was the service, we had a party of 6 and had the extremely unfortunate experience of sitting in the back on the first floor......right by the kitchen. I suppose when an order is ready, the chefs way of notifying the servers is to ring a chime (think of a triangle chime in a marching band). So yeah every few minutes we heard the chime (clearly not quiet since they are notifying waitstaff) and if a waitstaff didn't come, they kept chiming. On the fortunate times when staff did go get their food, it literally sounded like a heard of elephants. The restaurant is a beautiful old building with (what I would imagine was the original) hardwood floors. When staff come running for food the whole floor seemed to be shaking (let me note, this is not in any way an attempt to be derogatory about anyone's size, it's the force coupled with the old floors and foundation). It became so loud I took note of what the staff was wearing on their feet, only to be horrified to see a server wearing thin ballet flats. From my prior experience in food service, that's a huge no no for many reasons, to include safety and sanitation. I digress. Immediately our waitress let us know the kitchen was not taking orders for a while, uhmmmmmm ok. We ordered drinks and looked over the menu. Everyone got a water, no straw, no return of our waitress, so I went to the bar to get us straws. Two of the girls got their mimosas and I waited and waited and waited some more on my Bloody Mary. They finished their mimosas when I finally got my Bloody Mary. It needed something, salt, pepper, something. Again, no waitress, again, I go back to the bar to get salt and pepper as there was none on our table. It took about 15 minutes before we were able to put our food order in. All the cocktails were done and we were drinking our waters. No mention of any refill or other drink options. We ordered an appetizer and our meals and began the long wait for our food. Again, listening to the chiming of the chime thing and the clumping of the waitstaff feet. We also see other random people walking into the kitchen area. I'm assuming management or owners, but again horrified to see opened toe shoes and one woman talking loudly on her cell phone while doing various things in the kitchen. Sorry that's gross, people take their cellphones everywhere these days and I hate to think she may have been handling food or touching countertops while she was on her cellphone (and how could she hear). After about 45 min (so over an hour of being there) the food arrives. Yes, all the food. The appetizer came out with the meal, so disappointing, as we were looking forward to at least a little something before our meal, oh well. Again the food was amazing and I can somewhat understand the length of time to get it, but was disappointed that the appetizer came so late. That food didn't stand a chance and we were done within 20 min. Again, we wait, this time for the check. At this point all of our waters are empty (ice and all) there was never a mention of refill at any time. It took about 10/15 min to settle up the bill. Overall we were there for over an hour and a half and we were completely miserable by the experience, thinking, while the food was amazing, we would never go back. Was expecting so much more and it is such a beautiful and historical spot, but just not worth the return for such mediocre service. read more

I was looking for a venue for my mother's 95th and her sister-in-law's 96 birthday party. After looking around, I ended up choosing the GreyFox grill and and all I can say is that I am so happy with the outcome. The staff was amazing and hard-working. They help me put together an event that got so much buzz amongst family and friends and something my mother and my aunt will never forget. They are always happy people but, I have not seen them this elated EVER. One thing that's I worried about, before I chose this place was if they would allow me to have free range of creativity and, yes, they did, as long as it was within reason and did not harm the historic building.. I was able to bring my smart speaker and play a ton of music that I had downloaded. We must have had at least a hundred people there. People are still talking about it. As stated earlier, this isn't an historic building, and, like many historic buildings, their bathrooms are upstairs, instead of down. So I asked if I could have a porta-potty downstairs, because it would be hard for my mother and her sister-in-law to walk up 15 stairs and, they granted my wish and we had a porta-potty out back, for anybody who could not walk up stairs. If you're looking to book an event in Dover, Delaware. I would highly recommend The Grey Fox Grille. The staff is friendly and hardworking. Sorry to say, it wasn't a good lunch visit. Place was mostly empty, which is not a good sign. I asked for an unsweetened ice tea and my husband a root beer. My iced tea was served Luke warm, with no ice! Hubby's soda was flat with two ice cubes! We looked at the menu, had a very bad feeling about this place, paid for our sodas and left without eating. This was a last minute stop. My friends and I were celebrating my birthday and drove down to Delaware. It was 8pm so we called first to make sure they had availability. They weren't sure if they could accommodate three people due to some issue but after discussion she said to come on in. I have to say, from the moment we walked in- the ambiance, service, the food, and the drinks were all fantastic! The chef even came out to check on us! We couldn't have been more pleased. We went here for my husband's birthday and it was wonderful! The building is historical and beautiful. We had our own room for the reservation which was so nice. The appetizers were delicious. My New York strip was HUGE and cooked just right. The prices were also extremely reasonable. Everyone was accommodating of the two toddlers we had with us and our waiter was amazing. On the fence, just stopped in St. Patty's day around 1115 pm. The bartender who was polite said we've decided to close since business is slow but you can order a last call drink. It made sense, but just like that 25+ people came in the next few minutes. With about an hour and half left on St. Patrick's Day she said same thing and people were still coming in probably 35+. I don't know if any business locally that can afford to do this both financially and from a word of mouth stand point. Very confusing that they threw away quite of a bit of money (that's their business) but left first impression for the 5 of us as so-so. Ok, even taking covid into account and possible staff shortages. None of that explains the bad service. We arrived at 6:00 on a Friday seated promptly in a relatively empty indoor dining area. We where given QR codes to access the menu, we were also given printed menus eventually. Ordered starters, one showed up, when asked about other starters we were told they were not available, told we should not order from online menu only printed menu. We ordered 4 entrees from printed menu, after awhile we were informed that 3 of the four are not a available. So after substitutions and an hour and fifteen minutes after our arrival we had entrees. 2 of had ordered asparagus for our side, they substituted squash with out asking. 2 of our party ended up with burgers that were grey and salty and cold hashbrowns. Another ended up with over cooked dry chicken breast and squash. I ordered lemon garlic Baramundi and asparagus, they substituted some cold tasteless fish and squash. We picked through the food paid our bill of over 100.00 dollars left and went somewhere else for dinner. read more

Always keep an open mind and your expectations lowered, but with the Grey Fox you won't have to do that. Great service, food always tastes better when it's served right. It's pretty easy to win me over if the drinks are one of the many reasons to come back, since their food is also on point they're just not playing fair anymore. Peak times you won't wait too long, maybe 15-30 mins max. Do yourself a favor and get yourself the ribeye, or any cut of meat. It's done right, right as in medium rare. Thoroughly disappointing experience! Took nearly three hours just to have lunch, several orders were messed up, we waited forever for everything...all around rough! Asked what was gluten free (and explained I have Celiac Disease) before I ordered, two servers told me everything can be done gluten free, I ordered the crab cake Benedict (on potatoes, not bread). When my meal came I asked if the crab cake and potatoes were fried, they were, and they were fried in a fryer that fried chicken tenders, etc...lots of cross-contamination! They then made me an omelette (that was too oily and salty). One of our servers graciously explained that he doesn't know what gluten is and he was very willing to learn from me about it. The other server said she told the chef my food couldn't be cross-contaminated but they did it anyway. The manager apparently said most people with celiac disease are lying and just don't want to eat gluten so they ignore it. Two people from my party of 6 asked to speak with the manager but she refused / never came to our table. Ultimately they took the crab cake entree and 20% off our bill because it was such a poor, not Celiac friendly experience. Having only been open for about a month, I would expect there to be some hiccups, but not as many as there were tonight. On first sitting down our waiter informed us that three of the main entrees were not available - something their website fails to mention. Both I and one of my companions had our hearts set on the Beef Wellington. If you aren't going to offer it, why is it on the menu? maybe it should be offered as a special. (There were no specials tonight.) The available entrees were limited, but the filet I had was truly cooked to perfection and well seasoned. The side dishes were even more limited than the entrees. FIngerling potatoes, quinoa, and mixed vegetables were all that was available. Though I must say, the potatoes and vegetables were excellent. Server was fine and very friendly, but had to check twice whether something was allowed. The wine list was OK, but seriously lacking in white wine selections. Is was almost like there was a section of the list missing. All in all, a very promising place for Dover. I can only hope they get it together and complete their menu read more

I LOVE this place. The food is as close to PERFECT as you can get. My favorite is the Cilantro Barramiundi. I could literally eat there everyday. We were disappointed. First time ever Yelp reviews let us down. Excellent location, quaint converted house with hard wood floors - but that creates a very noisy environment. Waiter greeted us with a litany of everything they were out of before we even opened the menu. Waiter was not well versed with the menu and we often had to ask him for clarification as he stumbled. We ordered the filet and after we finished salads - which were surprisingly scimpy - waiter informed us filet was gone. So rather than offer the t-bone or something, he left to retrieve the menu again. I would have expected an offer something for the inconvenience, but nothing. The crab cakes were underwhelming. After reading some of the reviews, I was nervous about trying this place; however, I'm happy that I did! My friend and I went here after seeing a play at the Schwartz center. Walked in and waited to be seated as stated at the hostess sign, not many people there for a Saturday night. Stood there waiting for a while, deciding if we should leave and try somewhere else. Finally the bartender had poked his head around from the back of the restaurant and asked us if we had been waited on, he then informed us that their hostess had left nearly an hour before we got there. We were seated at an adorable table. This place was completely redone from the former establishment - huge improvement. We ordered drinks (wine, waters, and soda). Our waitress, Rachel, was delightful. She was prompt and attentive. I informed her of my food allergies and she was very receptive and helpful. She found the answers to all our questions and we settled on the chicken skewers as an appetizer. DELICIOUS! Perfect cook of the meat, it was tender and juicy! And the dipping sauce just made it pop! Yum! We ordered more wine, and entrees: the Venetian Chicken and Vermont Pork Chop. Yum yum yum! The meats were cooked perfectly! The sides were my only complaint, between my friend and I we ordered all of them (2 each with entrees). The mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables is the way to go! The "hot tots" just normal tots, and mine weren't warm. And the garlic herbed cous cous left much to be desired. Then we ordered the chocolate lava cake. It was okay - sort of hard and not warm, but that didn't stop us from eating it. Overall, a good experience. Didn't realize this is where Smither's used to be. To start, loved the homey lax decor. Service was incredible. The manager was crazy personable. The sous chef even came out and served our food. He made a presence on the floor greeting guests. I'm not too big of a burger person but my husband loved his burger; our son loved those gourmet tater tots. The plating was appetizing in itself. In answer to your questions- what I recall from being there on three separate occasions with friends- The drink was a Bloody Mary -usually our favorite & our group all felt the same about it- it tasted mostly like pickle juice . We did not say anything to staff. Sometimes when one is with friends we don't want to ruin our get together by complaining and we just accepted it unfortunately. At this same occasion one friend ordered a plate of egg salad , tuna salad& I believe chicken salad- and couldn't eat any of it as she said it was quite terrible and was very disappointed something so easy could be so non -palatable. As we are gathering new friends in this state once again we were invited to join a group here. Dinner was very average with high prices that didn't match up to the quality of dish -although I cannot recall what we ordered as it was awhile ago. Each time was to meet different friends and love the setting and building but the food has had no flavor and has disappointed us three times. So we now decline politely to go there on an invitation .
