It was beautiful, and the BnB reminded me so much of the house I grew up in with its Victorian construction, that I felt such a massive amount of nostalgia that I not only slept like a baby, but was bummed that I had to eventually come home. The innkeepers were not only friendly, but really knew thier history of the house... And to top it off... Breakfast was ALWAYS amazing. The Balcony room was beautiful and very romantic. I ordered a mojito with rum versus the odd mojito on the menu. I'm not sure what was wrong with it because it was so off, I couldn't pinpoint one thing. The music piped in was muzack. For goodness, sake, muzack is not appropriate for this setting. Ever. Both of our drinks were an epic fail. If we go back (we're local), we would stick to wine or beer. I don't know if they have a kid making drinks or they are just badly trained in making cocktails, but they are a total miss! We had the sweetest server.

She also has wonderful stories of her adventures during the off season that are sure to delight you. The rooms are very comfortable and extremely well kept. Air conditioning is available and separately controlled in each room. Each room has a private bathroom. Breakfast each morning is served with fruit, some type of bread, and a very delicious hot dish. She even serves her own made grape juice. The grounds are immacutely tended to. She also has a wonderful sun room where breakfast is served each morning and one can take advantage of it throughout the day to read or relax. The only complaint I have is that I can't take her home with me!!

However everything was very clean. The room I booked had 2 beds a small dinner table with 2 chairs. A refrigerator and coffee maker, along with a medium sized TV and 1 bedside table. The bathroom was also kinda small, but it did have a walk in shower with a shower head high enough for tall people. My only real issues was there is almost no storage. No dresser andbonly a small hanging rack. Also the lighting is a little dim. The plus are the beds are very comfy. It's Individually own, not a corporate monster. It's dog friendly. Plus the location is great. The service was super friendly. I've never checked in via text message before, but it worked. Overall my stay was wonderful! I give it a 5 star review. Would I return? Absolutely, and my doggie agrees. It hard to find a nice place to stay that's dog friendly and fairly priced.

It's also located in a scenic spot -- beautiful Omena Bay is right down the hill. The lodge itself is comprised of several historic buildings. When we stay here we prefer a room in the Wheeler House, the main house that's also the inkeepers' residence; the second floor is home to four very nicely appointed guest rooms, each with a private bath. The dining room and sitting rooms are on the first floor; guests can enjoy a crackling wood fire in the fireplace, play the piano or just sit and read in the front rooms. Another house on property also has guest rooms, we believe, while a third house is divided into suites. There's also a game/activity building with its own fireplace and kitchenette. The hosts are friendly and helpful, and are excellent cooks -- we love the breakfasts! They're also very knowledgeable about the area, and about the history of their establishment. We really enjoy them. Omena, between Suttons Bay and Northport, is in the northern section of the Leelanau Peninsula but still makes a good, convenient base camp for exploring the rest of the area. We would definitely recommend Sunset Lodge for couples as well as for groups. After driving down "motel row" in nearby Traverse City, we were even more convinced that mom-and-pop lodging is the way to go up here, and that we have found a real travelers' gem in Sunset Lodge.

The location and beach access is convenient but that's about the only positives from our experience. I grew up coming to this hotel every summer for years, the staff was always wonderful, accommodating and friendly. I was looking forward to returning after a very difficult few months dealing with health issues for a weekend of relaxation. Unfortunately, this hotel no longer exists to provide hospitality but more so, to do the absolute bare minimum. While charging a premium, mind you. The rooms and property were always clean and well maintained. This is no longer the case. The "complimentary breakfast" is actually laughable. I was aware it wouldn't be a hot continental breakfast, disappointing but fine. Breakfast is a cardboard box with the most lackluster selections are delivered to your room after you fill out a paper slip at the front desk, each day of your stay. Not only is the system inconvenient, the food provided was disgusting. Jimmy Dean frozen sandwiches you microwave in your room, microwave oatmeal cup, random bruised fruit, yogurt, and don't bother if you have any allergies or dietary restrictions. Prior to arrival, I called a few days ahead to inquire specifically about the breakfast options since I have allergies. The staff member was initially rude upon answering the phone and became increasingly annoyed when I asked questions about allergens for the complimentary breakfast and their allergy protocol. Surely, I can't be the first person with allergens they have had as a guest. The staff member insisted they could not provide allergen information ahead of check in and insisted the front desk would have information upon arrival. Upon arrival, that was not the case. Not one staff member had the slightest awareness of any allergen information and barely made eye contact during check in. Be prepared for additional fees and charges on your credit card, eventually they fall off and it's their prerogative but it wasn't made clear upon booking directly through their website how they do their charges and seemed excessive, especially for the quality of service and accommodations. The room was not clean, after driving all day and dealing with the unfriendly check in, the room was disappointing. The balcony was unusable for all the spiders and cobwebs that clearly haven't been cleaned. Which is interesting since an early check in wasn't available but yet no one had clearly been in cleaning that room. I inquired that their beach facing rooms were currently available for a lower price than we booked our parking lot view room and if we could be moved to a beach front room since we already paid more than their current booking price. I didn't want a refund, exchange of the difference, or any money back, just moved since they clearly had the rooms available. It was end of season and weather was predicted to be rainy, and it was. The staff member was again incredibly rude. With so many places to stay in the area, don't bother with this hotel.

We went to Pyramid Point one afternoon and the sky opened up on us on the walk/run back to the car. We were drenched. We came back and asked her if she could toss some clothes/towels in the dryer for us and she did without complaint. It's something you're not paying for and she went above and beyond to accommodate us. Bonus points for that. We stayed in the Empire room. Definitely tiny, but cozy. Plenty enough space for a couple. Breakfast in the morning had many choices and was delicious. They've even got a barn you can park your car in. There's only a few spots and it's first come/first serve but that was another unexpected perk. The home is from the early 1900's if I remember correctly and it shows. Narrow steps, tons of sitting rooms. It's fun just to walk around inside and check the place out. Highly recommended!
